I have the answer to the 'Rubik Cube' pallette! When you remove it from the cup, make sure you hold the small latch up under the big one to open the lid. I don't know why but only using the big latch on its own makes it harder to open however using the small and big latch together is a piece of cake. Also it stops you breaking a nail when it suddenly pops open.

Most Van Gogh are fully lightfast; pigment information is easily available. I consider them full art grade. If using from tubes I advise allowing them to dry more rather than using fresh from the tube; they work oddly straight from the tube but fantastic from dry. Tubes are by far the better deal and you can pre mix custom mixes using tube watercolours and make dupes! Here’s a few helpful tips for custom mixes I’ll add here ‘Vintage-pastel’ dupes mix 1 part Chinese white with 1 part titanium buff then use this as the base adding other paint to make dupes. Specifically ex; Periwinkle; a touch of ultramarine blue. Ex: suede ; a touch of raw umber, etc. Green gold and quinacridone golds are great bases for real plant greens (mother colour paint green) mixed with Pthalo greens Both PG 7 and pg 36. My ultimate version is M.graham nickel quinacridone gold plus a mix of pg7/36 ! Vibrant black is a deep blue mixed with a strong red brown. My favourite right now is m.graham Anthraquinone mixed with Terra Rosa. Here’s a few for gouache using HimI/Miya. (three sets referenced the number listed lists the set/s the colour is in; white is in all sets.) Mud; Coffee (50) +Earth yellow (24/56/50) + burnt umber (24/56/50) + touch of white Pale golden wood; mostly white + earth yellow (24/56/50) + medium yellow (24/56/50) + purple rose (24/56/50) touch of burnt umber (24/56/50) Princess grey ; light princess (50) + moon grey (50) Neon red; peach blossom (56/50) + medium yellow (24/56/50) Golden joy (24/56/50) orange +medium yellow+ochre+earth yellow. I hope this helps people these were some of my most useful discoveries! I’m in Canada, fun video thanks.

I would highly recommend a pocket palette or demi palette from Art Toolkit. Of course you cannot use standard half pans but the liitle square pans or larger work really well and I find as I'm quite sparing with my paint as I paint small, they are plenty large enough. They work perfectly with magnets and the mixing area is really good too. I bought extra mixing pans and have an Art Toolkit pocket palette just for mixing. And yes you have to get them from just outside Seattle, but they've been so handy and have paid for themselves and delivery charges several times over.

I also thought, that the design of the Van Gogh palette wasted a lot of space , but it is actually really cool, cause the pans each sit in there own little wells. This really helps to keep them from getting contaminated.

I’m in soggy Cambridgeshire, so probably not far away from you judging by your accent. Love hearing how different people feel about palettes. I’ve got many of the same. How I feel about them is an evolving process. I’ve come to realise they key for me is flexibility, if I can’t change it, I get bored.

I bought a cheap craft set from a local big box store with a 1/2 off sale -six bucks I think. Plastic but a good size for plein air or travel. I pulled the craft paint out and gave them to a coworker for her child. ( it’s like your small, 12-pan W&N one) I can clip it on a small clipboard, clip on small metal water cups and am good to go. But it sure is fun to see what else is out there. I also bought the Transon paint saver for my gouache (like what you have without the cup). In fact I bought 2. Great ideas.

Hi I’m from the UK! Yes I made it to the end! 😀…I have most of those palettes too cos watercolour and tiny palettes are so enticing! The Fraser Price is just stunning isn’t it? There’s also the tiny heavyweight box that takes 12-14 paints which Cornellison carries though the mixing space is getting really small. I like to carry it with a small artisan porcelain palette. You can get the model with a water container attached too but that makes it heavier. I have the Winsor & Newton vintage one but Schmincke still do it. The tiny palette is also carried by whiskey painters I think and some artisan watercolour makers. Cass Art and Daler Rowney also do a bijou 1/4 pan palette which is very cute with 18 colours and will hold I think up to a size 8 travel brush depending on make. But get ready to refill the most used colours quite often! Great for small sketches on the go though. Funny thing is I still have such an affection for the little plastic Cotman design because it’s so lightweight and practical.

I love those little brushes. If you’re out doing field sketches with a pen / pencil, you only need the little brush to add some color. I figure it’s why all the field kits have small (detail) brushes. Most of your sketches will be done in a 5x8 or smaller book. The Van Gogh set is excellent for watercolor. You can pop that pallet out & discover there’s extra space beneath … I prefer it over the WN which indeed is sleeker. MidAltantic US. Maryland

I am hoping to get the 45 Winsor & Newton palette you showed. I have a W&N Cotman Watercolor Compact Field Set of 14 colors that came with brush. I also want to get the Gouache Palette that you showed. As for the Brass Palette, it’s a great dream palette that I will have to wait for a while to be able to get. Definitely a lot of choices when it comes to travel palettes. I am glad 😃 to see that I am not the only artist who loves to use a wide & wonderful variety of travel palettes. @@SketchesnScrubs I love 💕 the Compact Field Set because the variety of colors are perfect for my landscapes and birds paintings. Plenty of mixing areas, a place to hold clean water, and it clips nicely & flat on my artist board or I can use the thumb hole with either hand to paint with. The little water cup clips to either side of the palette as well. I got it on sale at Amazon.

A good idea for the brass palette or really any other pallet that you want to add a ring to are the PopSockets they're like steel they're real heavy duty and it's a thumb hole or a finger hole it's big enough for a thumb and it's very sturdy I think it would be better than any of the rings that come on any of the pallets I just thought of this while I was driving and had to comment lol

I'm an Australian artist painting and watching your presentation in Thailand. My pads are 300gsm size 270mm x 390mm. I carry 24 large W&N pans in a W&N fold out palette or 36 large tubes of Daniel Smith. 8 Brushes in a brush holding zip case. 2 litres of water in plastic bottles and 2 coffee jars for brush washing. With pencils, tissues etc. in a compact back pack and a big sun hat. Your smaller travel kits with carefully selected 12 half pans, a 0.8mm black waterproof fine line drawing pen, some larger Kolinsky sable travel brushes and 200gsm size 167mmx250mm watercolour pads would still be great fun. Aquarelle Arches make a 300gsm size 15cm x 30cm 'Cinemascope' landscape pad for big feel small paintings. Small paintings are a must when travelling, easy to store and make great mementos and family heirlooms. And they cost a fraction of big paintings to produce. All good fun 👍👍👍

I live in Sukhothai, in the county; it was the capitol of Thailand in the thirteenth century. A scooter costs less than $4000 new, Honda PCX-160 with CVT auto fitted with a top box is good. So I live in Gibraltar. Not sure if you might have heard of it but its basically part of the UK. Although many might argue that since we are at the bottom of Spain we are Spanish ^.^ I wonder if you've ever heard of it? :)

On Amazon there is an empty palette by Jerry Q, it folds up very nicely. I wonder if anyone can give an opinion on it.

Remove the metal tray insert from your little metal palette meant for 22 half pans and you can actually fit 24 half pans in total :-)

@@SketchesnScrubs your welcome! Since you already have magnets just use those but I cut a plastic translucent cutting board from dollar tree, i think it’s called a flexible cutting board but it’s basically thin plastic, I use the metal tray as a guide and cut out a piece the same size and shape and then use glue dots to stick my pans to that plastic sheet so that I am still able to pull them all out and access the bottom mixing area or clean the palette or anything else. I use clear tape to make little handles on either side to lift the whole new “tray” that I made out with all the pans. I hope I am making sense and not rambling to much :-) I do the same thing with my 24 half pan tin palettes as well and can sometimes fit 48 half pans but usually 46 for sure by doing the same thing :-) I love have as many colors as I can in as small of a footprint as possible! I sometimes divide pans with cut credit cards too! Especially super high tinting colors like Phthalo Blues and Phthalo Greens for example. They go such a long way that a divided half pan that has both Phthalo blue red shade AND blue shade in it spilt by a cut up credit card divider is super handy!! I hope these ideas help! I love your videos AND your art!!

I used the same gouache palette that you used and now it stinks. The water in the gouache has gone stagnant and I can no longer use it. 🤷‍♀️

@@SketchesnScrubs thank you so much for the advice. No one told me this before I decanted all my gouache into the palette. I have learned now for the future. Thanks!
