I think a lot of people can relate to major career transitions and the very difficult challenges that come with it. Whether that’s by choice or due to circumstances out of their control. You are not alone either Jake. Thank you for sharing this!

This has been a lifelong struggle for me, as a photographer. There are so many areas of photography which I love, I simultaneously want to be a touring music photographer like you, and I also want to be a travelling nature photographer or something... I also love doing urban photography as well. I kind of hate that you have to find One Niche to be considered "legit" in this industry, it's super constricting, not to mention risky, purely from the standpoint of making a living. You never know what might happen in your life, or with your niche, where you could find yourself in a situation where you're forced to transition into something else in order to keep yourself alive. Then comes your case, in which you now have to build a whole new network. It's so tough and I really think we should collectively encourage branching out (obviously, if one wants to branch out). I know sticking to one thing will give you more experience, but if you love more than one type of photography and you want to delve into it, you shouldn't have to be afraid of possibly losing whatever network you've built already in order to do it. I really hope it only keeps going up for you, Jake, I think you're very talented and insanely driven. The fact that what happened to you didn't put your fire down, didn't take your spark when it could've, makes me so happy. I know you've struggled immensely, I can't even imagine all the pain you've had to brave. I hope things keep getting better.

Let me know your thoughts here! I think this would be a great open discussion in regards to pivoting!

Honestly I think no matter the industry, changing careers (especially if you’re not doing it voluntarily!) sucks. I’m going from medical to med. engineering because of disability and it’s not fun either. There’s a reason I chose the old path first, and I miss it. But I would be lying if I said this world of new possibilities wasn’t also a little exciting! The only thing that’s fundamentally different in arts imo is that your niche is just generally way smaller and you’re usually more dependent on social media, which suucks. You’re not alone in this, Jake! Can’t wait to see where this takes you.

Thank you for sharing the video. I think @mattfricke said it rather well. Most of the times there is some kind of transition going on. I believe in your situation, I could see you very well in some kind of photography education, given your knowledge. A lot of people would benefit from it, similar to these YT videos. Have you actually tried doing concert photography for smaller clubs and/or bands. I hope, given your current situation, that this is still possible and would put you not totally of the grid. And there are so many related fields to music photography besides touring. Given your network, there should be possibilities for press and promo shoots, I would assume. If that is something you are interested in. But maybe it is all easier written than done... Keep up the good the work here and on the other platforms!

When I saw ‘transitioning’ in the title I thought something completely different.
