In '78 the New Yorker replaced the discontinued Imperial. Essentially they were selling the same cars as in '77 but changed the names. The Newport Custom moved into the old New Yorker slot as 2nd from the top. I had a '76 Newport Custom with the 400 Lean Burn. Plenty of power and I never had an issue -but then I had a replacement air cleaner (with the "computer") in the trunk, just in case, lol. I always liked the way GM cars floated but loved how my big Chrysler handled. Thanks for the memories.

The Imperial was discontinued unfortunately after the '75 model year. Chrysler removed some luxury features and rebranded as the New Yorker in '76 at a lower MSRP and it sold well.

Hi Art ! I'm 87 and still have my 1974 Imperial. I had a 78 NYr , but it was not equal at all to the Imperial which has 4wh disc brakes , 440cu in engine , totally heavier rear axle and differential , and springs . You can't swap them . Imperial is almost 300lbs heavier . Motors and shafts which operate headlamp doors are twice the size . Then to slow the whole works down they added 'Leanburn' and catalytic converter , and removed the 326 gear for I think it was a 273 . The finishing touch was a sluggish 400ci engine . It took away all the fun of a big comfortable plush car that can actually spin tires on bare concrete road . The 78 only managed 1.5mpg more milage , but what you had to give up , wow . Also , the 74ht top has a double stainless moulding above the doors and has a painted area between , really classy , I also prefer the standard 74 classic rear 'opera' window over the full size glass . When Motor Trend road tested the Caddy Eldorado , Lincoln Continental , and Imperial LeBaron , with tons of pictures included , in conclusion they praised the Crysler engineers and said the Imperial has magnificent brakes that panic stopped 5000lbs in 132' upposed to 157 and 158' for the other two and equalled Mercedes whic,,,h is almost 1000lbs lighter . They also rated seat comfort the best and loved all the gouges plus warning lights lacking in the competition .

The fender skirts on this New Yorker were standard factory equipment and the paint color match is perfect - I would never suggest they be removed! The '58 Impala on the other hand was an entirely different situation. This stately Chrysler is a clean machine and truly special when you consider Art's dad purchased it new. You must remember, the NYB was actually the 75 Imperial with several pricey options deleted. The last Imperial was a $10.000.00 car. The NYB's were priced about $1,500.00 less. i had a 78 Thriple Dove Grey NYB St Regis coupe. And yes the red pinstripes were standard on the 78's. Without a doubt, the greatest road car I ever owned.

The side molding is after market. I don't remember the name of the company, but they are riveted on. They never move or come off. I was selling cars back then, and used them all the time. They came to the dealership.

I pity the youngsters who'll never spend any time in a New Yorker. A buddy of mine had a pristine '76 four door when we were in college in the early 80's. Car was the smoothest riding thing I'd ever driven. I jokingly tell people that driving a '76-78 New Yorker is like driving your spinster Aunt Mabel's sitting room down the street. All you need is a dish of that candy that's all stuck together to make it exactly the same. Yours is beautiful. Thanks for sharing this.

I think that bodyside molding is aftermarket -- the factory version was continuous (without end at each body panel.)!

My dad bought one in 78 that was the 77 model. They had a hard time selling them because of the oil crisis. He got it for about half what they were asking. Beautiful looking and riding cars. I could sleep comfortably in the back seat on road trips. Great times!!!

When I was in Highschool in the 80s, I bought an identical New Yorker from an elderly lady that lived in my neighborhood... And I mean IDENTICAL, other than mine had a 440 under the hood and it didn't have an 8 track player. It turns out that those wheel covers are actually ABS plastic, as were the fender skirts. The body side molding was probably installed at the dealership, but the lower pinstripe was probably a factory option, because mine also had it... Although I've seen several without. The last Imperial was sold in '75 or '76, but the New Yorker was essentially the "carry over" Imperial until 1978. There really was NOTHING like those interiors for sheer luxury... Absolutely the most comfortable seats in any car I've ever owned. Oh... The vent windows (which mine did have) were optional until the end. My uncle had a brand new one in '78... His was light yellow with the matching interior and vinyl top... What a sight to behold! Wow, what great cars they were!

Thanks for showing this beauty! By 1978 the market for full size cars was in a transition to smaller bodies to reduce weight and improve gas mileage. Chrysler was having a harder time selling these very large cars. That doesn’t detract from the appeal of this wonderful example.

I currently own a 1978. White with a red interior and vent windows. 46,000 miles. 440 car. Far and away the most geriatric car I have ever owned. I love it. I removed the Lean burn set-up and installed C-body Magnum exhaust manifolds with a 2 1/4 inch dual exhaust with resonators, electronic distributor , and Eldebrock intake with a 1972 spec Thermoquad. It runs better. I daily drive it. I hope to change the cam shaft in the near future. What the heck. If it is going to get mileage this lousy, it might as well be fast too!

Sound works fine here. Art sure has a nice collection of cars. This Chrysler is beautiful. I recall working in a tire shop when these cars were new. It was near impossible getting those gorgeous hubcaps off without damaging the lip. They were plastic and trimmed almost perfectly so one could hardly get a hub cap tool in between to pry it off. They looked really great though and suited the cars well.

This body style was passed down from the 74 and 75 Imperial. The thing unique to the imperial that wasn't passed down was the rear end, and the 4 wheel disc brakes. The imperial also came with a standard 440. The new yorker received either a 400, or a 440HP.

I am a GM and a Ford fan. I like Arts New Yorker and I like the Imperials from Chrysler. The New Yorker looks a little like Lincolns and the Cadillac from that time in 1972. Another great video from Art and Tony.

That's a beautiful New Yorker, those were some amazing luxury cars! The '74-78 New Yorkers and '74-75 Imperials were based on the '69-73 Imperial platform with different sheet metal, they share a lot of components with them still, except the rear end. The pinstripes and trim were an option on them, just like the skirts. The steering column and wheel on that is a Chrysler one, some of them had the GM saginaw, but if a Chrysler of that era had a telescope wheel it was a Chrysler column, they only bought the tilt wheels from GM, not the telescoping ones. Just like some had a Saginaw pump, but Chrysler also made their own Federal pump. All of the interior electrical parts and motors on those were Chrysler too, only the trucks had GM electrical parts. Mercedes actually bought all of their HVAC and interior electrical parts from Chrysler back then and then copied the technology. Those 400s did have quite a bit of power for the late '70s, they were larger 383 V8s rather than smaller 440s. I haven't seen one in that good of shape for a long time, that's a very nice car!

Hey, Tony... I had one of these back in the day. Regarding the red stripes, the lower one and the trunk were standard from the factory. Someone has added the upper stripe and the body side moldings as they were not standard equipment. Also the fender skirts were an option...not every New Yorker Brougham came equipped with them. What a great survivor this one is! Great interview and video!

That's one gorgeous New Yorker. I too am a Ford fan, Lincolns Mercurys, Fords and F-series trucks. My second favorites are from the Chrysler Corporation. I was born in Detroit in 1955, and my mom's side of the family all worked at Chrysler's Highland Park headquarters until 1958 when we moved to Southern California. The family all drove Chryslers for as far back as I can remember up to 1969. Our last Chrysler was a 69 300. 69 was the first year for the fuelsage bodies. I thought they looked great on Chrysler's full-size cars. The 69 300 was a great looking car, a 4 door hardtop, and the famous 440 under the hood. Chrysler's engineering was the best of the Big Three. The 300 also had hidden headlights that were operated by an electric motor mounted in the center to control both doors. It made an interesting ringing sound while operating the doors. By 1978 we had switched over to Fords. My parents owned a 76 Lincoln Town Car, that was beautiful car. It was Dark Red Moondust Metallic with matching velour interior. As you pointed out, Ford used engine vacuum to power everything, from the headlight doors to the ATC system. I remember the 2 big vacuum motors just behind the front bumper. There were vacuum lines, and check valves everywhere. There were also vacuum canisters the size of coffee cans that stored enough vacuum to operate everything one time with the engine off. This New Yorker took over after the Imperial was discontinued as Chrysler's top luxury model. While this one does resemble the Town Cars, the New Yorkers managed to keep Chrysler's styling ques, which made it look like the big Chryslers of the era. For example, the little pointed hoods over the stylish taillights was pure Chrysler heritage. I like that. Even the water fall grill and vertical turn indicators, even though was very Lincolnesck, these are pointed and thinner, which is totally Chrysler. The interior of the New Yorker is very elegant. The lose pillow seats were all the rage in the 70s, both GM and Ford used that look on their luxury cars. Thanks for your excellent review of our big, beautiful American luxury cars. No one did luxury the way Detroit did. I couldn't help notice the owners beautiful home and all his cars, I would love to have a setup like that.😀

I learned when you special order an automobile you MAY still not get everything available that year. I ordered a 73 Mach I from Dave Sinclair Ford in St. Louis. Had more than enough cash, but got a novice salesman that did the ordering. I was told several options were not available, the engine I wanted was not available, when the salesman just didn't know what he was doing. The car I received was beautiful, however not my dream car. The company lost more revenue, the salesman lost more commission and I never bought another car from that dealer. Love the way Art's cars are over the top with options. Few cars were ordered that way back then.

Beautiful car - My brother has the same color 1978 Chrysler New Yorker only about 40,000 miles with a 440. Imperial had the smaller rear window and the only engine available was the 440 in Imperial. Speedometers changed to a 100 mph (with Kilometers) vs Imperial 120 mph. Front fiberglass nose sections were made by Budd Co. and LOF Plastics. Same body as the Newport. Thanks for sharing!

Ford introduced illuminated entry in 1977 and was all Ford components with D5AZ full-size Ford part numbers. GM had their own, but Chrysler used all GM illuminated entry parts. It was a very lame system compared to Fords. I plan to do a video on it soon.

I have a 76 4 door town car with 56000 miles and it seems about to be about the same condition as this nice Chrysler. I like the four door hardtop and also the fact that there is no ridiculous vent window on this New Yorker (like the Lincoln has)

Many thanks for sharing this, Tony. When I first saw this car in the garage I thought it was the "Salon" edition, which sported metallic silver paint with clear coat. 1978 only. The Dove Grey looks nice too. It's a beautiful car. I have a '77 New Yorker Brougham. It's a 440 and still runs the Electronic Lean Burn, which is a nice historical curiosity. It runs fine, but the possibility of improved performance makes me think I should change over to the simpler electronic ignition system. Interesting that Art converted his to points ignition. Excellent car. A coworker purchased a 78 Grand Marquis sedan, black/black with tan interior. This car definitely has more content then the last pre downsized Merc, or me being a downsized GM guy, I would say more than the Electra Limited or Olds 98 Regency for 1978. This car is Cadillac level trim and equipment. Fascinating that this was a daily driver for two generations and only has 74k and is in this condition.

The 1978 brochure picture (also in Dove Gray) shows the lower pinstripes, but not the upper pinstripes. The options list says "Stripes - Upper Tape" available as an option on the Newport, but N/A on the New Yorker Brougham. 2 sets of dual pinstripes looks a bit odd...perhaps a dealer add-on for the upper ones?

Tony chyrsler really nailed it back then when it came to competition with the continental and the Fleetwood brougham back then it gave people the chance to actually pick and choose what they wanted and be satisfied with their decision unlike nowadays buying a new seems great at the moment but 2 or 3 years down the line it always seems to be a regret or a pos. As a town car owner I've had my 88 for 12 years and am glad to have it probably just as much as art has had the chrysler or as glad as you have had your town car as well

After 75 the New Yorker Brougham was basically an Imperial. What an absolutely beautiful example. The skirts where standard and should remain not be removed and it would not look right without them. Too bad it wasn't a 440 but the 400 should push it fairly well.

Ah, YES; Mom and Dad had a triple-white one (a '77, actually) through most of my "youth" (late 70's through mid '80's) Took my driving test at 16 in it, at DMV in Redding Ca. TONS of fun, when I could borrow it to "cruise the gut", on Sat-nites, in downtown Redding! What grand memories, of that GRAND OL' BOAT..they traded it in, on an '84 Seville..beautiful car..but SOOOOO gutless, compared to that BIG-block, Mopar BARGE!!

Beautiful old New Yorker. Always liked these cars except for the chintzy plastic dash, with the black plastic radio and HVAC buttons. Totally enjoying theses vids with you and Art! I had an 82 Mark VI years ago and yes I was surprised Lincoln was still using vacuum for the headlight doors. Never liked how after a couple of days of not driving it, it would start doing the "sleepy eyes" thing. Seemed below Lincoln's "station" to me.

It's hard to believe that this beautiful car is 45 years old. I agree with you that the front end looks like a Lincoln. I think the grille also resembles some Pontiacs. The fender skirts definitely need to remain on the car.
