Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.

seriously don't be!!! I watched these videos before applying to art schools and I got so discouraged and had so many breakdowns because I didn't feel like I was good enough and I ended up getting into 7 of the top schools, all the ones I applied to and I got almost all scholarships available. Don not worry!!!

i love the yellow piece! the dissonance between the colours and the subject matter actually was what made this more interesting to look at, because it required to evaluate the situation and question the first perception. maybe the way to make the hands more threatening is not to change their appearance but to make the flowers look less complete, like theyve been picked again and again.

Would you say it's more important (in portrait painting that one would put in their portfolio) to have proper anatomy and natural looseness, or to have an overall pleasing composition and idea?

All of those aspects as important! However, its useful to tackle one thing at a time, as it can be overwhelming to do everything all at once if you are just getting started. I agree with the mural. Before you mentioned it was even a mural I didnt even notice, I thought it was just paper...then again i know nothing about art.

Also - yes the face seems the always look the same which i get can be the whole idea but it just seems boring to me. The one with the butterfly on the nose for some reason seems really boring, nothing special. I would, as you say, either move the face from always being so clearly centered or try actually a different face altogether

I disagree about the birds simply because they look embroidered and the amount of time and work that must've already taken, if they were painted sure add more, but not because of what they're made of.

I’m Peruvian I loved it! As a musician it’s very interesting to see the detailed and structural technique of this kind of art. It really allows for greater appreciation of these forms of visual art and getting the artists point across in their work through certain aspects of technical and structural applications. And the conversation about context and meaning beyond the canvas to build these relationships is very eye-opening.
