That's awesome about DC comics. I hope things go great with that. I know my daughter dreams of something like that. She has asburgers so it's hard for her to socialize, but she's a wonderful artist & loves your work. She says she would love to make art like yours. I tell her she can. She draws every day. And has recently discovered Copic markers & colored pencils. For the longest, she would only do Black & White. She has expressed interest in learning watercolor. So I hope she'll let me teach her the little I know about them. Then I know she'll get better with them. Great space, sorry you have had so much trouble with it. TYFS

That's amazing! I've started working on my own comic series this year. I've adapted the tabletop campaign I've been running and I understand the learning curve so much. I'm mostly an illustrator and character designer, so it's been a journey just in the few weeks alone. I honestly cant wait to read thd comic I've been a fan of your work for a long time and you're one of the reasons I am in a place I can even find this project to be feasible! 💖

I am redoing my space and honestly got frustrated and bored with some of these 'my life and my space is perfect.. and every surface is empty. See how simple life can be?' videos. I actually need real work space solutions now that my studio space has changed. As soon as I heard you sharing your struggle with your current space I knew this video was going to be real talk. You are so very real and likeable. Thank you for just putting reality out there. 🖤🖤🖤

Japantown is really becoming the art hub for SJ. I wish I could get out there more but it’s been a rough few years health wise. I used to live there about 10 years ago and it was so fun to just go walk down and get food. Now we’re mostly there for the ukelele shop. It’s good to know your husband does screen printing. I’m on the board for California Chinchillas, which is a local chinchilla rescue, and we might want to do merch sometime down the road and it’d be cool to have it done locally. (We in a rebuilding mode at the moment, but it’s one of the ideas being tossed around.)

I had an idea when I saw your grandmother's painting. Maybe you could get it scanned and then overlay your artwork on top. It would be an amazing collab between you and her. Maybe you'll pick up oils again in the future so you'll have the original but in the meantime you're already actively painting in other mediums. It's just an idea and maybe not something appropriate but I thought I'd just put it out there. Love your gentle pace and content. Perfect company when I'm in my art corner. All the best with the move. I wouldn't be happy in this space with all those dramas. Hoping your new space works out better for you both. 👍

I'm sorry you have to move studios because of the building conditions! When I was in college for art, I had leaks in the ceiling all the time where I stored my art and it was always so heartbreaking. I'm really happy to see your studio tour though, because I'll be getting my first dedicated studio room when I move soon and now I'm really inspired for how to set it up.

My goal for this year is to go to at least one con/expo artist alley. It'll be my first, so I'm looking local and hoping I can get in. So upsetting that your studio building was so mis-maintained. I think I'd literally cry if something leaked on my art.

All those ruined supplies! Ugh! It breaks my heart. I had a studio that flooded every time it rained, so I know the feeling. I'm glad you were able to get out of there. As for resolutions, this year I just want to work on quantity. I don't produce enough work, my supplies don't get the love they need, and I'm not practicing enough. So, I really need to get on that. I'm also learning pixel art and game design, and would really like to recreate an old NES game with modern graphics as a learning experience.

Yeah it really sucks having to be around a shitty neighborhood, seriously. Its like no matter how good your mood or day is people are always looking for someone to hurt or steal from so you're always having to look over your shoulder and the mood is just gone. ESPECIALLY if you're in a spot where you aren't from, or where you're new to the area. Not only do you have to watch for stuff outside of your studio but you have to even watch for when you leave it that sounds so shitty. I hope you're able to move everything out smoothly though, it sucks that all of these people are out here on drugs and police dont even bother even when they *know* some people are up to no good. I experience this on a day to day basis due to growing up here and I can't wait until I can just leave this neighborhood after college lol.

I'm just seeing this in November 2021. I don't know if you've found another space by now or what city you're in or if you're in the US, I wouldn't move from my space at all! I'd get all the tenants together and come up with a collective plan to deal with the issues of the space and the folks outside near the building/area. Also have you all thought that your borderline slumlord landlord may not be fixing things because he's intentionally trying to drive you all out in prep for gentrifying the area? If not that have you all thought of asking him for slightly reduced rents in exchange for improvements (with his approval) to the building by experienced trades? FYI Artists: Y'all know that when you're renting a commercial space you can negotiate for finish out costs before moving in that comes off the rent? You can submit a L.O.I. (Letter of Intent)/proposal to negotiate 3-12 months free and/or reduced rent with a 3-5 year lease for repairs, updates/remodeling? I'm from Chicago but live in Central Texas where rents (residential and commercial) are more expensive than Chicago and New York. The majority of artists here, especially Black and POC no longer have studio spaces because rents are crazy high so, again if you're not able to find another affordable big/good space try to work out a deal with the landlord. Unless he's the sweetest landlord in the world and you all aren't there illegally (code-wise) you also may have to contact your City's code enforcement department to make him fix the roof... Artists please get some liability insurance for your spaces even in your studio is in your house. There is very affordable, good liability insurance policies for artists. If you'd like more info, I'm happy to help (that's a sincere offer to help young artist with no strings or expectation). I'm just community oriented... Good luck!
