🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🎨 Art Student Challenges - Art students often face challenges in navigating the overwhelming amount of information available for skill improvement. - The need to balance free and paid content, mentorships, and social media platforms can be confusing. 01:05 🕒 Timing in Art Studies - Timing in art studies is essential, but it can vary based on personal goals and learning styles. - Setting time limits for focused studies, such as value and shape exercises, can help prioritize specific fundamentals and establish routines. 08:01 📅 Time Frames for Projects - When working on portfolio pieces or complex projects, it's more effective to set time frames rather than strict hourly limits. - Breaking down projects into manageable time frames helps with pacing, habit-building, and budgeting. 11:12 🎨 Creating for Fun - Sometimes, it's essential to create without any time constraints for experimentation, learning new techniques, or personal enjoyment. - Balancing structured studies with more relaxed, fun projects is crucial for a well-rounded creative journey. as a relative newbie to art, I'm 66 never had any formal art training, I can tell you conflicting information is out there. - like free hand drawing a circle; "use your wrist not your arm", "use your arm and not your wrist". - another is a video tutorial where audio dubbed over the video. I'll watch it first then follow along, he'll do something and I don't get same results then 10-20 seconds later he'll say you see I made a new layer and changed it to multiply. so I back up and see that. FRUSTRATING. one I have trouble is watching tutorials and forget the instructor has decades of art behind them and I feel after a few weeks I should be at their level. I get annoyed with myself sometimes they will compound this with an aside of "this shouldn't take you more than 20 minutes" . . .

little bit crazy to expect your result to look even remotely like the result of people that have probs thousands of pencil miles behind them, its just not happening. The level of want and hunger to be creative for a living over such a sustained period of time, youre not likely to close that gap. You need to figure out what level of finish youre aiming to achieve in 5 years and then be happy with reasonable milestone improvements every couple of months. What is a good outcome for you personally, what is an improvement today vs yesterday? that is the wins we strive for consistently. Its a total mindset thing and it helps manage the frustration of not being as good yet

@@Alex-jx8ez I fully understand these thing on an intellectual level. not to toot my own horn but I've always had the ability to learn things quickly and be quite proficient at them in short order. Art, however, is something on a whole other level for my heavily left brain. I know that even if I devote every waking hour to learning and practicing art it will take a very long time to come even close to those I see. I do appreciate your comment. thank you

@@Houdini_Bob Hi, I wasnt trying to be mean at all, just to clarify. I also struggle with that too, unfortunately art is only partly an intellectual pursuit. Its 90% a craft/skill, understanding is the first step. On a positive note, its a step that most people cant get past, so Im sure you will do well with your craft long term. Just dont let it get you too dismayed when it doesnt look the same

Thanks for the awesome and informative video! I hope it’s okay but I wanted to make a suggestion for your future videos. The music is at a nice level during the intro cards, but it drowns out your voice a bit in the beginning while you’re speaking and introducing yourself.
