FUN FACT: Edward Hopper’s “House by the railroad” was Alfred Hitchcock’s inspiration for the Psycho house / Bates Motel house. During set design, Hitchcock saw the painting, and told the art department “build me this house!” What one sees in the film (and sequels, the Bates Motel series, etc) is what the artists came up with, using some already existing set elements from another house set, to mimic this painting.

House by the railroad also has special meaning to me, because I volunteer my time at a Victorian Mansion turned house museum, same “Second Empire”Victorian style as this, originally built by a railroad baron, that sits on a hill near the railroad!
