An example of a technique I use in my surgical practice

I had mine repaired by this method January 9. Total detachment of distal bicep tendon. I went back to full duty as an electrical lineman ( a lot of strenuous distal bicep usage required) March 21st. I was quicker in recovery than most and had surgery performed about three weeks after injury. Bicep is still not as strong as it was, but is usable and will regain most strength, I would imagine. I will probablly always have a slight deformity. (popeye bicep syndrome) but I can live with that. I did not have a restriction brace after surgery. One week after, Dr. removed splint and told me to work on range of motion slowly with no weight or resistance. one month later started with 20 pound limit and physical therapy. So far so good.

If you happen to read this, I am just curious what your experience has been since the surgery. I tore my bicep and am set to have this surgery next week.

@@mferguson1281 Let's see it's over a year into it now, and I still am doing very well. I'm 50 years old now so I have lost a lot of my strength anyway however I feel ever gained at least 80 to 90% of the strength I had in my right bicep. I rarely think about it anymore in the deformity has lessened so that no one notices it only I can tell by looking closely and it's just a little smaller looking than the other arm. Has a little bit different angle of attachment which makes it appear to bulge a little bit more but it is still smaller.

@@mferguson1281 I have been back to full duty and I have had no problems with it. My doctor was a bit more aggressive and less careful but I believe he understood me personally and knew I was no idiot and would not push it too hard. Because I did not have to spend as much time in a brace I think my rehab went faster.

@@mferguson1281 it is a crappy thing to have happen but you should expect a good recovery eventually. Don't let yourself get to down about it, if yours is like mine I'm sure your bicep looks kind of scary right now. Don't worry it will get better. Good luck to you

Thank you for sharing your experience. I've been really having a hard time wrapping my brain around it as it just happened two days ago but they were able to get me scheduled for the procedure very soon thankfully. I'm almost 40 and an avid weight lifter/ powerlifter so it's really got me bummed about missing out on that. And the injury didn't even happen doing that it was just trying to move a couch at home and did it in an awkward way. But I guess that seems to be the way a lot of accidents happen. I'm glad to hear you've recovered well and it gives me some hope for my own situation.

Excellent animation! It was fascinating to see the process of how I was put back together.

Just found out today this is what I'll be having done in July; ruptured right bicep tendon. Thank you for this video, now I see what will be happening.

I had this done in May of 2020 I think a few weeks after it was partially torn. Dr.s didn't really do a good good job of explaining anything and was only given a crappy sling to use instead of something stronger or heavier dutier so that it would limit my motion after the surgery so make sure that you ask a lot of questions and even get a second opinion if you have to because if I had to do it again then I would've gotten that second opinion or at least asked a lot more questions and then went for that second opinion afterwards but I definitely won't be going back to them or referring anybody else to them.

I had this procedure done two weeks ago. I was in a cast the first week and now an Ossur post surgery metal arm brace. I was told I'll be in this brace 4-6 weeks depending on recovery. Then I will need physical therapy as the tendon will be very stiff. It was painful the first week and now painful if I pronate it . This is not really a simple procedure and there's a lot of post down time.

What is the pronostic? Lost of extension? Risk of second rupture?

Does anyone know what the cheese wiring of the tendon feels like if it happens. I’m a month post operation and worried I may have put too much weight on my arm. I’m a hypochondriac. Can’t find anything on line really describing what it looks like or would feel like if it happened. No bruising or any extra pain or noticeable difference. Just curious if anyone went through that and what it was like? Thank you

Extremely unlikely for this to happen. Sorry for the late reply.

@@mralistairjepson-orthopaed7809Hi there. I had this type of surgery done 2 weeks ago, spending only one week with the bicep totally torned. About how much time should I spend off gymnastics? My doctor suggested 9 months off....

I seen some videos with out the screw but it looks like the screw procedure thins out the tendon.
@asjepson

Correct. It’s personal preference. In fact I rarely use a screw myself. I just make as small a hole as possible so the tendon is tight in the hole and no screw is required.
