For this routine a special top had to be made for this piano. In later years on the Lawrence Welk show, Arthur Duncan would do this routine with Larry Hooper at the piano, and for laughs, Larry would put on a construction workers hard hat and say “ My, this is getting a little dangerous here”. On January 4, 2023, Arthur Duncan passed away. He was a one of a kind tap dancer and singer who became the first African-American to be a regular cast member on a variety show. Arthur, rest in peace and thank you for the wonderful memories.

@@shalindaplanks181 Cool! I read recently that Duncan was the first black regular on a variety show-Betty White’s (1954). When, uh, certain people objected to her booking him, Betty made a short pungent response, and featured him again.

@@lesliegoodman-malamuth9796 I read that too. I remember him having an appearance in the movie Tap with Gregory Hines. My sisters in-laws were so excited. I wish I had took the time to research him back then.

Balance, elegance, timing, and all in a very confined space! The many times I saw Arthur dance, there were often spots where he looked like he was floating across the floor.

I don't remember watching this show when it. Was B&W. But living with Grandma, I watched a couple hundred episodes of Lawrence Welk with her. Saturday afternoons I think it was. When I read about the passing of Author Duncan, I immediately knew who he was. Fine performer. ☮️ and ❤️.

Now we know the origin of Michael Jacksons' Moon Walk. As they say, there is nothing new under the son.

Betty White invited him to be in her show, that created a racist commotion in the whole country. The guy was very good.
