Three times he mentions Christmas morning. Surely It belongs with the five best Christmas songs ever.

If you watch the 1977 clip you can see how much he had grown as a musician and singer. He's still learning his craft here, but his timing and vocals are still spot-on, very good clip of a passionate musician!

yes makes sense, he was much better in 77 show, plus he took it faster later

@@pputnam100 In dog terms, he grew into his paws! He uses his voice as an instrument extraordinarily well. Been on a complete Brady binge lately and a lot of his records/cuts like 'Follow on' or 'The long goodbye' of even 'Nothing but the same old story' (all album versions) he honestly reminds me of an Irish Bruce Springsteen..just the way he can get inside a song is fantastic in my humble (useless) opinion at least! 😉

he was struggling towards the end there , in his later performances of the song, he was epic ... you can tell he worked hard on it !! great song sung by a great ballider

I absolutely love the 1977 version, I agree it is superior to this- the only thing missing is the klunk of the shillelagh he gives on the guitar here... love it!

@SydFstyd very well said, true talent can't be ignored,i don't think there'll be much discussion in 36yrs time about todays performances,i'm surprised to hear a few negative comments about this performance,it's his version and it has evolved over the years,planxtys version is excellent but paul is one man on the stage and the sound he produces with just his guitar is excellent,i don't think he can be touched.

A terrific insight into the development of Paul's definitive version of this great song. Excellent though this is in its own right, the 1977 version is far superior. Still, it's a delight to hear the evidence that the supreme interpretation was clearly the product of years of honing and improvement. Great post!

The way his string went out of tune and his very quick retuning of it when he realized. A very good version.

in some interview a bunch of decades ago...Dylan identified himself as a "guitar poet"....I read that as a poet who happens to recite his poetry, in song, with a guitar. The Poet has implicit "poetic license"..like it, or lump it.

I suppose people's opinion is there own and that's what makes music so good, but for me bradys is the one - maybe its because of the hint of sean-nós decoration in his voice.

I'm trying to learn to sing it and its difficult. God help playing it. First time I heard this was about 5 years ago in The Olympia in Dublin. Paul on his own and alot of Instruments. If u get the chance see him live. He plays this song and its like he's playing two gituare's at once

@technischesKO Disagree my good man with the tuning. Ole Dylan might not have know the tuning for Arthur Mcbride but In his early days Bob used alot of altered tunings, mostly for old blues and the like. Lol sorry just defending his honor!

Not as masterly or as moving as 77 but his diction is clearer on this one. The narrative is important and on the later version I always wonder just what he's smiling at.

I think Bob Dlyan not only got it right but got it better, but like Neil Young wrote, "All you critics, ..are just pissin' in the wind." I gotta pee, better check the weather-vane,"don't need a weather-man to tell ya which way the wind blows"

Considering he taught Dylan this song I think that’s rude in my opinion
@Ireland114 жыл бұрын
Dylan cannot play or sing this tune. He is neither a great singer or guitar player. He plays this really sloppy. Brady is a legend and Dylan is not good enough to tune his guitar, he is a song writer
