Easiest way to put it for an American, Article 370 basically guaranteed a separate identity of Kashmir, kinda like how Texas got one. Separate flag, separate constitution, separate rules etc. The difference is Kashmir was at hands of Islamists and Jihadists who operated a billion dollar terrorism industry for decades under the shadow of Article 370. Also it was fundamentally against the sense of India as a country. Abrogation of Article 370 meant India is fully in control of Kashmir and Indian laws apply there too. Article 370 prevented the full Indian constitution from being applied to J&K. One example Kashmir girls weren't allowed to marry outside without losing their inheritance rights etc. It was supposed to be a temporary provision to give J&K autonomy but it was misused and empowered terrorists for years to prevent any real progress in the valley. No one thought it could be removed without massive chaos. But after revocation the situation in Kashmir has improved tremendously.

So the easiest way I cn put it is that Article 370 gave J&K special stratus as only certain laws of the constitution would apply to it. Thus, there were limitations as to what measures can be taken against militants and seperatists in the area. The government in power made an effort to abloish the Article 370 and was successful as they wanted to Kashmir to have a full on state status, which ultimately is expected to provide more control. There are obvilously other cause and effects of the Article 370 coming in and going out. For this movie however, this is the context.

Just watched the movie. Easily the best political thriller made in Bollywood. The movie is really, really top notch. Was surprised to see the makers get straight to the point and lay the facts bare with exceptional research and simplification. The storytelling is outstanding and the performances just brilliant. Yami Gautam is such a gem. Article 370 gave a special status to J&K causing greedy politicians and separatists to profit from lawlessness arising from the conflicted status. Abrogating it was a historical political correction that ended the conflict in Kashmir permanently. Must watch for every Indian and anyone who is interested in an informed, educational master political thriller.

Article 370 was regulations as to how much of indian constitution can apply to Kashmir whereas in all other states of India, whole constitution applies.... Kashmir was given some exemptions and they even had their special flag and own constitution (which no other indian state have) ... It had some provisions that says indian can't buy land there and many more which were also of a kind that were making ways for traitors to create unrest in the region... So it was a hurdle in making Kashmir a fully integrated part of India... Hence removal of it was extremely important... And there was also a political challange in removing it... Article 370 grants special status and complete autonomy to Kashmir Local government. That takes power away from Central goverment to intervene or make any decisions about the region. Kashmir doesn't have to follow the Laws that apply to rest of the Country. And local government and terrorists were taking advantage of that for many decades. That gave room for Pakistan's ISI and terrorists to run covert operations in Kashmir. So Govt.of India abolished the special status(article 370). So now Kashmir is like any other State/ Union territory in India.

Many of Indias' law didnt apply to Jammu and Kashmir because of Article 370, Anyone outside of the state couldnt buy property in J&K, and there were many other provisions that made Indias rule of law null and void in Kashmir, a part of Kashmir has been occupied by Pakistan, both countries claim that Kashmir belongs to them, abbrogating article 370 meant, all indian laws and policies are now applicable to the state, this didnt suit the propaganda of some of the local political parties, who never wanted Indias law to be applied in J&K. As far as i understand, Article 370 ensures the jammu and Kashmir administration that they can have freedom to choose what or what not applies from indian constitution to the people of J&k. Article 370 is a temporary provision which means it should be at some point of time be removed. Indian government wants to remove it because the administration and other powers are vested in the hands of few political figures who do not want to lose their status and power of ruling jammu and Kashmir.

@ourstupireactions Bit of background in short (hopefully): 1947 - J&K was a princely territory ruled by a Hindu King with majority muslim population. 1947 - India got political independence. Independent India started forming the republic of India by asking Princely Provinces to join it, meaning accepting the constitution. One such provinces was J&K. But the King Hari Singh (if i remember correctly) wanted to remain Independent. India had warned him that Pak will attack and conquer it, and his populace, being majority Muslim, and partition being for Muslim, will revolt against him. He didn't budge until it really happened. He signed up with India to protect J&K which consisted of Pandits, Saraswats, Dogras, Laddakis, Sikh etc. as well. However, under PM Nehru, J&K got special rights under a temporary article popular known as AR.370. (I think he even replaced Hari Singh with someone else) This gave rights to J&K administration to override Indian constitution. Eg. Rest of India couldn't establish business in JK. But Kashmiris could set up business in rest of India. They weren't allowed to marry out of state, etc. The tool was used to empower & embolden separatist, terrorist alike. Separatist acted as in-state spies for enemies like Pak. Needless to mention that minority Hindus were flushed out, converted, killed in the years that followed. Note that the article was temporary to enable the transition, however it stuck for many decade. BR Ambedkar, also known as father of the constitution, was against the article from day 1. The Ar.370 actually did the opposite - It alienated JK from India. Jammu and Laddakh paid a price for it. The Govt under PM Modi executed the massive task of correcting old mistakes. BJP the party PM belongs to had it in it's election manifesto. The movie covers a story from behind the scenes on how it had to be done. Yami Gautam plays a role of a woman officially who was pivotal to the whole change. Her real identity is of course not revealed. Ever since the removal of AR.370, and JK & Ladakh becoming UT (Union Territory - direct control of GoI) a lot of infra development has taken place, tourism has increased, brought back sustainable livelihood for locals. Imagine people being happy about trains operating! However the relocation of Kashmiris Hindus is still a distant reality. The Himalayas and Kashmir in particular is considered 'dharmic' for various reasons. Hindus temples in Kashmir still have/need security cover.

Terrorism in Kashmir had nothig to do with this article. It was completely political propaganda . This article was just giving more autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir state assembly in comparison to other states assembly or State government. Jammu and Kashmir government was more free from some central laws to follow , but was not completely sovereign from Indian constitution. Main problem was that Jammu and Kashmir had their own constitution within the control of indian constitution. You guys totally and absolutely misunderstood the Article 370 in question. The article was originally a temporary provision that gave the J&K local govt. authority and powers to undermine the Indian Constitution and laws and exercise a level of freedom not given to any other state.

Article 370 was a special status guven to jammu and kashmir by the constitutional assembly, which gives j&k special powers to run the state like j&k had a different flag, no one other than kasmiri peopel can do govt jobs in kashmir, no people from any other parts of india can buy any land or do business in kashmir, if a girl or boy from kashmir marry someone from other parts of india he or she have to leave kashmir they cannot stay un kashmir. In one sentence the total wealth of kashmir controlled by two families who have very stronglhold in kasmir politics. And govt of india cannot interfier and those things directly and indirectly helping the terrorisam... This flim shows how it took several years of plannng by the govt of india , and background work of our agencies to remove this article from both houses of indian parliament.... Hope i am able to clear your doubts a little... do watch the movie it clear the remaining doubts
