Artificial Inteligence (AI) in Country Music

In this episode, we'll be exploring artificial intelligence or (AI), a technology that can simulate human intelligence, in country music. While I'm not an AI whiz, I believe I have enough understanding to explore how it's being used to create new music, and how it might influence country music in the future. Let's hitch our wagon to the latest trend and see where this AI revolution takes us!

I personally love Hank Williams AI covers. Especially the ones of songs he never got to record. The Cajun Baby AI cover is awesome, its a song he wrote and was gonna record. And the Back Street Affair AI cover, Hank was supposed to record it but Webb Pierce recorded it instead. The Minni-Ha-Cha cover, it was a sequel song to Kaw Liga.

As a jazz musician, I'm tempted to say, "Well, they had to get it from _somewhere..._" But the fact is, while traditional Country used very simplistic harmonies, the songs TELL STORIES, and usually pretty good ones. AI just recycles phrases and ideas from existing material, it does NOT create "New" music, that's why it's being sued right now.

What I have to say is that I thought the Randy Travis song was a work of art and long awaited. I would like to hear George jones, Elvis and others sing new songs..

I have to support an artist using their own voice in new ways like Randy Travis did. Artists have been doing that since long before auto-tune, and AI as a tool is the next logical step. However, my ear can tell that it wasn't Randy Travis (or Conway Twitty for the other example). Randy's song is beautiful, but it isn't the same voice. In fact, if I had listened without knowing it was supposed to be Randy Travis, it would have taken me a minute to place the voice. It sounded like other similar voices I hear on the radio today. If I had to say why, I think it was missing some of the deep rich tones of his natural voice. In other words, IMO right now AI is still missing something. That is true of more than just music, but definitely true in music as well. It really is just another Elvis impersonator at this point. Of course, there will come a time when it will become virtually impossible to tell the difference, but I think even then the creative aspect will lag.

I do prefer authentic music made by someone who's had their heart broken or actually fallen in love. You can't have drinking cheating songs by someone who's never drank or been cheated on.

Also on the randy Travis song I fully support that one cause he can’t do it himself and it’s a song he would’ve cut if he could and the singer who did the vocal is basically the voice for randy since he had his stroke so he can still tour so it’s randy I don’t care and I hope he keeps doing that

As a songwriter I use ai to put out my songs as I can’t sing for shit but I also made an ai of my voice to sing them and it makes me sound decent but I also ain’t trying to sell it or anything like that at all just want my lyrics heard and to be able to hear my own songs and I do write my own lyrics 100% of them I don’t use ai for that and never will

Thanks for addressing this subject. I am with you, AI in country music is a terrible idea. That would the idea of having legends would bee gone because a computer would just keep producing songs by that artist, even after they are gone. Everybody says that AI gave Randy Travis his voice back, so it's a good thing. No it did not give him his voice back. Don't get me wrong, I like Randy Travis, but it didn't make him talk or sing better heck he didn't even write the song. It was just some executive's idea of maybe this is a way we can make more money. Think about it, they already own the rights to the songs they sampled to make the AI voice, so they technically don't have to pay Randy. They just found a way to not pay an artist. And don't we have enough fake sh*t in our world today? What's concerts going to look like in 40 years, a computer sitting alone on stage?

I do not think Randy's song is fake if it came from his heart when writing. Stephen Hawkings could not speak because of his MS, and he had a computer speak for him using his thoughts. Does that make Hawkings fake as well? I would give Randy a pass on this, but I would not give a Morgan Wallen or jelly Roll a pass if they used AI.

Randy didn't write it. He often used other writers. It's a though deal. His voice is recreated using AI so is it really real? But Randy did approve the song. Like I said the song is good but it is not 100% Randy. So it's a tough call. But I think anyone that can physically sing should not use AI.

@@CountryMusicTimeMachine They did released a unreleased Randy's song for the Texas charts a few years back. Hit the top 10 there, but did not the national radio airplay. It would be nice to see what the regional charts look like or by state. The Texas country radio would have more of the Texas artists not signed on the Nashville labels. where I live, the radio stations do play a lot of the Independent and small labels. Heard Drake White's song called Mixed Em with Whiskey. I am also hearing a lot of David Adam Byrnes song as well. Since he is an Arkansas native with several number ones on the Texas chart. Still hearing the Randy Travis's songs as well like this one still playing here. People missed Randy being on the charts. I just really don't care about country music today, but Randy, Colter Wall, Charley Crockett, Jon Pardi, Justin Moore, Lainey Wilson, Orville Peck, Andrew Farriss (Yes that Andrew Farriss from INXS is singing outlaw country, Cody johnson, Zach Top, Joe and Martina, Tiffany Woys, Ashley Barron and the likes Do sing country songs before the year 2000. Colter Wall covered the old Marty Robbins's number 1 hit Big Iron really well.
