Ultimate Calibration Guide for Apple 14" & 16" MacBook Pro XDR Display - This is the way! This guide will walkthrough everything that you need to know to calibrate Apple Liquid Retina XDR display inside the 14" & 14" MacBook Pro M1, M2 and future Pro laptop with MiniLED Displays. This guide will also work for Apple Pro level displays include 27" 5K Apple Studio Display, Pro Display XDR and any future Pro Displays from Apple. I'll cover how to create a custom Reference / Preset mode for the display to control brightness & set color gamut, Fine Tune calibration on the display using Calibrite Profilier & Display Plus HL (Display Pro HL will work as well) and doing a full custom color calibration.
**NOTE**
Only Calibrite newest Display Pro HL and Display Plus HL are capable of profiling miniLED backlight displays such as Apple Liquid Retina XDR displays. All previous Calibrite / X-Rite devices are not capable of calibrating any miniLED backlight display including Apple Liquid Retina XDR inside the 14" & 16" MacBook Pro.
Credit where credit is due. This guide took a significant amount of time, effort, knowhow, and validation of methods used from my color expert / scientist friends. Anyone is free to share this, however, if anyone is going to translate this into other languages or transcribe this guide into any other medium all together, i.e. written guide on website, etc. Please credit my work and this video.

Hello Art, I hope all is well. I just calibrated my Apple MBP M1 Max with Sonoma version 14.4.1 with the Calibrite Display Plus HL. I followed your instructions step by step. My machine did have a slight difference from the factory profile to the now calibrated profile. My validation returned an Average, All patches as 0.5 and Maximum, All patches at 2.9. Thank you so much for sharing this educational video for us who are not too familiar with all the technicalities in making the proper screen calibration on these MBP with the Retina screens. As a photographer, I am appreciative for all the work you do to provide us with these amazing educational videos to better display colors on the MBP screen. Kind regards, Kevin.

On the first day I connected my calibration device (X-Rite i1 Display Pro) via USB, on the 2nd day I connected it via Thunderbolt. My suggestion for Apple Studio Display users like me: Do not plug the calibration device directly into the slots on the back of the monitor. Use a Thunderbolt connection.

I used X = 0.34567 and Y = 0.35952 target values. For some reason my 2023 Apple Studio 5k Display came up with a warning triangle for Luminance target value of 100 (no idea why) so I had to go as low as 90 as instructed in this video.

What is the recommended preset mode or starting point for editing or grading 4K video in Resolve or Premiere and what would be the recommended custom changes to be made? I hope you see this....
@ArtIsRight

Premier you can get away with Display P3, but if you use resolve as well, I would probably use REC 709. Gamma 2.4 or BT1886 which is an option, they are so close to each other. Other than that 80-120 nits of brightness based largely on your editing environment.

I watched a previous video where you calibrated the white point of an Apple MacBook Pro 14 and 16", M1(before the advent of the Calibrate Display Pro HL/Display Plus). I have an M2 MBP that I need to lower the brightness to get my prints to be closer to what is on the screen. I thought the previous video showed a way to test/set the white point and confirm your earlier estimates. Perfect timing! I just go my Calibrite Plus and ready to calibrate my 14” M1 MBP. I have questions. 1) Does the Calibrite take into account ambient light in the room? Seems like you would want a different display brightness depending on ambient light, unless Calibrite accounts for that. I edit on the laptop in a low lit room at night, in a room with a translucent shade during the day, and in a cafe when I’m on the road. Should I calibrate three different settings? 2) What if I am calibrating for Social Media phone viewing and not print? I assume I’d use sRGB, with a different brightness. 3) I use a BenQ 320c when I am at my desk. I will have to look for a video on how to calibrate external monitors with HW lookup tables. Thanks for all your MacBook Performance, Colorimeter, and Monitor videos. They are top notch, and have been very helpful to me in determining and managing my setup. "1) Does the Calibrite take into account ambient light in the room? Seems like you would want a different display brightness depending on ambient light, unless Calibrite accounts for that." - No, however, you can enable it. However, the use of it is a misconception. Your display should always remain fixed and never change with the lighting condition of the room. Otherwise you are always editing to a moving target. "I edit on the laptop in a low lit room at night, in a room with a translucent shade during the day, and in a cafe when I’m on the road. Should I calibrate three different settings?" - Probably not, go into reference mode when doing color critical workflow. Hi, Art, I really appreciate your videos. I have a question that may been answered, but I can’t find an answer: Does each custom reference mode require its own custom profile, as I suspect is required? If so, is there a quick and easy way to switch profiles when changing reference modes? Eg. Going from photography to video editing. When switching modes on the BenQ SW272Q automatically switches the associated profiles (most of the time). Thanks for all the amazing content and your contribution.

"Does each custom reference mode require its own custom profile, as I suspect is required? If so, is there a quick and easy way to switch profiles when changing reference modes? Eg. Going from photography to video editing." Depending on how much the setting changes, power transfer function aka gamma, gamut and etc. So technically you should. But the variation are so small going from photo to video that I would just say choose a standard and go with that. i.e. I edit all of my video on photo standard. What it comes down to is that we are not doing work for million $ Hollywood production and I have seen some of those individual workflow that are know to be expert color grading house do away with less that what you are doing now. And no there's no way to switch the mode and have the icc change. On BenQ yes it will do that.

@@ArtIsRight HI, Art. I wanted to check with you regarding multiple reference modes, calibrations, and profiles. I currently use the P3-D65 Reference Mode (customized) on my MacBook Pro. I have that fine-tune calibrated and then calibrated/profiled using Calibrite software and the Display Plus HL. If I choose to also use another reference mode, am I able to Fine Tune calibrate using Mac OS as well (for the new Reference Mode settings) or will that overwrite the Fine Tune Calibration that I had already done for the P3-D65 Reference Mode? Further to this, if I can't do a second, separate Fine-Tune adjustment without deleting the first, what would I select in the Calibrate software for White Point and Luminance, as the Native setting which I used when setting up the P3-D65 Reference Mode would no longer be accurate given that I'm using different settings? Would I select Measured in each or select Temperature and Custom Luminance or some other settings? It would be amazing if you did another video tutorial on this showing how to setup a second customized Reference Mode and multiple profiles. Thanks for all your work and contribution.

You can just manually delete the icc, in the color sync folder. for SW use Palette Master Ultimate software. And for the best result you should custom calibrate it. As far as matching goes, it is going to be tough, different backlight, LCD panel tech and etc. Not to mention color gamut

I would say custom preset with display finetuned without calibration is still much better than just creating a preset without any finetuned. Do you need to calibrate, you can the dispaly would be slightly warmer. Apple always calibrate their display toward the blue side.

The issue is that P3-D65 default is around 160 nits. You can't change that. This is the reason why you need to create a custom preset with the luminance that you want. This guide walks your through this. I would follow the beginning part of this guide.

@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 11 ай бұрын
Doing this the All Patches max shows as 3.6 - is that still good? - In general, this is expected on some displays. It is not ideal but remember that this for just 1 patch max only. So in all it is not terrible. Also when calibrating the white point the max value available was 97.5, not 100 or over. Wondering if all is good. - This is where the fine tune calibration help. Say your display is 97.5, you would just fine tune that to 100 to get it inline. And ±5 nits of brightness is not discernible for human vision. Also, what if you calibrated the main Display P3 profile where you can still adjust brightness. Would that be usable too when you sometimes perhaps need the screen a bit brighter? The if you use P3 for photography, the icc profile will not change regardless of reference mode choose. What this means is that you can set it Apple Display or Apple Display XDR and the profile would still apply, no need to change. It start to get complex if you do too many for all of these sub-vairations and in general, it is not absolutely necessary. Just add more things to forget.

"Whenever I change the Preset, do I also have to go into Colorsync and load the corresponding icc profile as well?" Yes and you should restart the color aware apps as well, such as PS, LRC, LR, etc because all these apps load the display icc upon launch. The trick here is, if you use the same gamut and other settings for the various luminance calibration then you should be ok just switching over the calibration mode without setting the corresponding profile in this circumstance.

ColorSync says that custom profile is set properly but I can see with naked eye that colours are off. I need to set current profile again to the same custom one and can see colours change to correct ones. 3. It is a shame that presets are not assigned to colour profiles. Apple is not going to be able to solve this issue for you. They are engineers not printers/ creatives and the issue is not necessary with the screen. There are so many variables here from the lab to the light source used to view the print when comparing to the screen. It is a rather complex thing. This said, the first question would be, have you tried out other lab. Also, if you like please send me the image so that I can have a look and evaluate it. It could simple be that the overall tint is a bit off and print amplify all of this. Additionally what light spruce are you using to view your print? I would also advise a dm with me on fb page or insta. this way we can go back and forth faster.

Your best bet to fine tuned is to just ignore the measurement from the HL device. Some displays read lower. Other ways to work around this is set the luminance value higher, verify with the device and when it comes to fine tuned, say you want L100 and you are measuring at 85 just put in 98 or something like that. lt is a way to trick fine-tune into taking the value

I have seen values that high before. If you follow the method and leave the display to warm up that might be the most that you can get. This has a lot to do with the EDR that Calibrite is using. Studio Display & MacBook non XDR have traditional display that EDR is easier match to.

You need to have Calibrite Display Pro HL or Display Plus HL which are the device that support MiniLED backlight calibration. No point doing the calibration if you have other devices. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHesp2amjL2Aopo

For that no, none of the Pro Spectrophotometer are supported. The only that's support is the Color Munki Photo / i1Studio / ColorChecker Studio devices (they are all the same). For that pro device you would still use i1Profiler. However, X-Rite has ended support for the i1Pro series already, so I would not advise that you get it. I would look at the i1Pro 2 or 3

Same answer, Calibrite Profilier will not support that, and you have to use i1Profilier those are consider X-Rite pro devices. The only spectro that Calibrite Profilier support is the i1studio device

2 ways artificially put in a higher value in Mac OS to get to the value that you want when measured. Or put in the value for the luminance that fits with in the range of what macOS will accept. The former is a better way but either will do

Could I also use an older i1display from xite? also: why there is there no adobe rgb in the preset, only P3/srgb?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 3 ай бұрын
You can but won't get full gamut because this new display has a different spectral output. And there's no Adobe RGB because Apple did not calibrate that from the factory nor care to put one in.

In MacOS Sonoma there is a weird issue with the Colorsync Utility on my new MBP. When I reset the icc profile to factory default a window pops up and requires me to enter my admin password. No problem here. But if I want to select a specific icc profile (e.g. the one I created following this tutorial) after selecting the profile the same window pops up, but this time it does not let me type my password. My username is already entered, click in the field below it, start typing, but nothing happenes. As a workaround I copied some random short text and pasted it into the password field. I am then allowed to use the backspace key on my keybord and after manually deleting the copied text I can start typing my password.

@@ArtIsRight Thanks again for all your help! You are amazing! Quick question: I went through the guide, calibrated my screen, and had a new color profile set. My Question - can I switch between presets / reference modes depending on the task I'm currently performing? (For example, "Photography (P3-D65) L100" for Lightroom editing, and Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 Nits) for everything else). I'm worried that in changing presets back-and-forth, I'm damaging / reversing the color calibration I just performed....

Ok so here is where I get super confused. So I do both photo and video. When I’m editing photos do I have to set the displays preset to my photography preset as well as set my icc profile to match? And then when I want to edit video, do I then have to switch my display preset to video as well as change the icc profile from photography to match my video preset? So I would be switching both the display preset and icc profile. Meaning I would have to calibrate the display independently for photo and video??? The bulk of my question is just how to do multiple things on the same machine.

Depending on the App that you use, Just stick with P3 and gamma 2.2 it is close enough to video 2.4 or BT1886 gamma and just go with it. You can simplified it this way. Once the content hits the web it really does not matter much anyways, displays out there are all over the place.

Can I calibrate an Apple Pro XDR display using the Calibrite Display Plus HL and maintain the full extended dynamic range? I'm hearing conflicting opinions. One is that the panel can be color calibrated, but then loses its HDR headroom. As I'm reediting portfolio images to take advantage of this HDR headroom, I want to be sure to get both; i.e., color accuracy and the HDR headroom. Is that possible today?

Hey do you/anybody know the recommendation for printing settings and keeping multiple calibration profiles? He mentions it when talking about setting the white balance and choosing the custom brightness 100 setting that the lower screen brightness of 50 is the best profile for printing. That would definitely make sense as I’m having an under exposure issue with printing while using ICC profiles and being calibrated correctly. Does anybody know if it’s normal to just switch back and forth between these display settings - ie staying on the 100 setting from this video but as I go to print switching to the 50 setting to make changes to the image for brightness and saturation. I’m toying with just staying in that setting.
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 7 ай бұрын
2 variables: I never recommend brightness below 80 nits. You are losing a lot. I would look at the light source luminance that you are using as well. These are variables that are equally as important.

I’m sorry, I misspoke on part of that: I meant the d50 instead of d65 for printing and also using a lower lum like 80 nits if I’m having some dark exposure printing issues. How do you guys manage multiple settings? Like do you color grade in d65 with the settings you’ve made here and then when you want to print switch over to d50 and make adjustments? Thank you for your in depth videos, they’ve been revelatory.
