Ha! Hilarious Anthony Fantano intro there, Jon. I think I need to get on the Spoon train. I may have only heard one album - Kill the Moonlight. Shame on me! You have pushed me to sample more! Lots of groovy bands have come out of Austin! You put a lot of effort and did a deep dive here. I appreciate you including the song clips, too. Spoon are more on my radar now! cheers!

Hey Hanna! I think you would really enjoy Spoon’s music. Again, it’s nothing groundbreaking. It’s just expertly crafted. I wanted to include at least two more sound samples, but couldn’t get anything from those albums past copyright block. It’s always daunting to take on the task of talking about your favorite bands, so I appreciate the kind words. So good to hear from you. I hope you’re doing well. Cheers! ✌🏻

The Digital Gramophone yeah, incorporating the song samples is TRICKY with KZbin 😫😫 I have to cut them down to 10 seconds or less, which doesn’t make for an adequate sample. Again, fantastic video here! ✌️😀

Spoon Shirt... Spoon video. Got it! Thanks for that, I often need that kind of didacticism. Like I always say 'It does what it says on the tin'. Not implying you are the Tin. Or even Tin Man. Spoonman maybe :) Haha, I think I was on that college plan too! Yep, also resonate with that 'exploring the history of rock' while new bands were flowering in their own time. Ah yeah, I remember picking up G500 and Big Star's third cheap when mall music shops were going out of business... memories. Got a wall full of them. I never knew Spoon started on Matador! And then on Vapor. "Lafite Don't fail me now" - gotta love that clever musical reference ;) Do you rate their stealing of the No Depression font? Actually, that's probably another example of a certain humour I get from the little I know of Spoon, and can see how it meshes with you humour. It's starting to all make sense! Oh yeah, now the cd singles and 7"s - fanboy stuff is coming out now! Speaking my language on that. Funny you mentioned that about the track in the Jaguar ad and 'young guys going into advertising' - I heard or watched a doco/podcast a few years ago on how ex A&R/Music industry folks (especially youngsters on the lower rungs) migrated to advertising and film/tv after the fallout of Napster, which began the whole 'sync-ing' of a far wider, niche varierty of music to ads, tv, film etc, which helped legitimise them as an 'income stream' in the face of declining sales/downloads, where 10 years before that would be 'selling out'. Wish I could recall what it was called - was fascinating. I digress! Interesting how you intuited the Transference album as a b-sides album, given the production and coherence. Ya gotta love a good Fridmann production. There are a few of them. Hahaha, I love that about the two green copies of Hot Thoughts. Someone's lying somewhere... I like that you're evaluating the sequencing etc of the comp, it's something that ought to be laboured over. You prompted me to dig out Kill The Moonlight yesterday and I can say in all honesty there was not an ounce of fat on that record. Tight. Clever. Funny. Great tunes. Influences you pointed out (a touch of EC or new wave here, another band there etc) but Spoon have integrated them into their own thing. I think I never gelled with them in the early 00s because 'The Way We Get By' got all the noise down here and it felt too close to Ben Folds (wouldn't say that now, just a passing resemblance in parts) which never sat with me. Jonathon Fisk sounds to me today like a proto-LCD Soundsystem! This was great stuff Jon, thank you for putting this video out. Will definitely be adding Kill The Moonlight to the collection on vinyl. What other album of theirs would you recommend I try next?

Sometimes I have to spell everything out for my audience. I did feel like the guy that wears the t-shirt of the band he’s seeing at the show. These are the sacrifices I make for the greater good. A little secret between you and me (and anybody else reading this comment)... I was hoping to get Soundgarden’s Spoonman stuck in people’s heads. Mind games. I would like to know the name of that documentary. I remember that being a buzz topic around music in those years. One time, a friend of mine and I were sitting and chatting with Jim Eno, and he was telling us about some Zoo using one of their songs in a commercial. Ha! I don’t remember all the details. But I remember it being a very consistent thing for them. Their music also showed up in a lot of movies and tv shows in the 2000s. Damnit! That reminds me. I forgot to talk about Britt Daniel’s involvement with the score for Stranger Than Fiction. He worked with Brian Reitzell and Spoon’s songs were heavily featured throughout that (excellent) film. Great affirming synopsis of Kill the Moonlight. To me, it’s almost a forgotten album. Their rise in popularity came later, so that would make sense. If you want to try something next, I would go with either Gimme Fiction (2005) or They Want My Soul (2014). Those two have some nice crunch going on. Parts of Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga might be too sugary sweet for your liking. Thanks for going all in with this comment, Dean. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for your next update, my friend. Cheers! ✌🏻

Great video Jon! I'm not just saying that. You really know the discography and all of the minutia that goes with recording the albums. I was waiting to hear what the band ate for breakfast during the They Want My Soul sessions. Thanks for sharing your love of Spoon. I know nothing so this is all new but I watched the whole thing. No skipping for me. 🙂

Great video, I’ve just discovered this band, I’m from the UK where they are relatively unknown. I only have “They Want My Soul” which I love. Can’t wait to get a lot more of their albums! 👍🏻😀
@TheDigitalGramophone4 ай бұрын
The primary reason they aren’t as well known in the UK is the lack of touring they’ve done in Europe. It’s even more expensive to do so now. They definitely had their jaunts through there in the 2000s, but now if you want to see them in Europe it would only be as an opener for a bigger act. Or one of the festivals. There’s no bad entry point really, but They Want My Soul is a great place to start. Cheers! ✌🏻

Sometimes it shouldn’t be such hard work. With some bands, it’s just the time and place that you get into them. I sometimes wonder if I’d like them as much if I just discovered them last week. Yeah. I would. An apple a day keeps the Fantano away. Cheers, Kimbo! ✌🏻

Kill The Moonlight, that’s the one I needed. Stranger Than Fiction is one of my favorite soundtracks thanks to Spoon. I had about 5 Spoon CDs as I really love the group but now I have to rebuild I just bought They Want My Soul for 50% off at Barnes and Noble last week. Such a great group, even old guys like me like them. Very nice retrospective in your own special chaotic way.
@TheDigitalGramophone4 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve! I was kicking myself afterward for not talking about Stranger Than Fiction. I included a clip from the film over one of the sound samples. Almost every soundtrack that Brian Reitzell works on is amazing. Especially because he brings in artists to collaborate. They Want My Soul is a great one. It might be their best album objectively. I don't know. A case could be made. Glad you tuned in for this one. I thought there's a chance you would be a fan. Cheers!

Hi Jon , as a huge Wilco & My Morning Jacket fan , I always had time for Spoon. Small Stakes & I turn my Camera on were favorites. Their records are sonically brilliant unlike so many this century. I love well Produced albums & theirs are. Saw them in the late 90's. That Elektra experience was a nightmare for them. I could see Aimee Mann singing their stuff ! Aaron Judge , back tonight ! MVP 💪
@TheDigitalGramophone4 жыл бұрын
Hey David! I wanted to include a clip of the Small Stakes video, but it got blocked. Britt and Jim are studio wizards. I meant to say something about those two songs being written as jabs at Ron Laffitte and the industry as a whole. Got sidetracked. They’re an excellent live band. Such presence on stage. I’ve seen them about 10 times. My Bravos starting a rookie on the mound today. Tough task going against Cole. Welcome to the Big Leagues, kid! ✌🏻

It’s not too often I see a chicken Get it’s head cut off in a video. But I get it. “Knock, Knock, Knock. I have two of their albums. Gimme Fiction, which I would say “Mathematical Mind” and “Was It You” are my favorites on there. On They Want My Soul my favs would be “I Just Don’t Understand”; which makes me think of riding in a small boat on stormy seas. It has a certain sway to it. The other song from that album would be “Inside Out”. I have my speakers very wide apart, and when that bit with the harp dances back and forth between the speakers it cross the whole room. That really gives that song a very textural sound. “Outlier” is just a great car song. I’ve seen others grooving to it while I blast through the stereo. (Yeah, I’m one of them people) I’ll have to look out for your recommendations for the other albums.
@TheDigitalGramophone4 жыл бұрын
Telephono and Transference are the only two albums of theirs that have songs I could do without. There were songs I wanted to share clips of, but then nobody would be able to see the video. “I Just Don’t Understand” is a brilliant cover of a song that was first performed by Ann Margaret. A very little known band by the name of The Beatles covered it later. “Inside Out” has a lot going on. A symphony of synth and keyboards. It’s quite something to see in person. I think you’re ready for the minimal approach of Kill the Moonlight. Then you can graduate to Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga after that. Thanks for watching, Brother Eric. I was hoping you’d get in on this one. Cheers! ✌🏻

Nice dive into Spoon! Not totally in my wheelhouse, but I've seen them live a couple times here in Austin and they put on a great show. "Take a Walk" on Girls Can Tell is probably my favorite jam by them. Make it down to Austin for a local Spoon show for a good time, and I'll buy you a coca-cola and some BBQ! Just kidding, I'll get you super drunk and your wife won't let you hang out with me anymore.

Hahaha! So back in 2009, they played three nights at Stubbs’ outdoor venue. They had awesome opening acts every night. Dale Watson, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Low... it was awesome. Had a great time getting drunk in Austin and I almost got my ass kicked because my lady friend (at the time) was sarcastically high-fiving everybody as we walked down 6th Street. I would love to go back. Thanks for hanging with me on this one, Unc. Cheers, brother!

I thought Anthony was going to talk about the song Spoon on Ege Bamyasi. I guess not. I like how you've sequenced the order of events here. I actually can't remember if I've ever heard Telephono now that I am thinking of it. A Series of Sneaks and the EPs that preceded it were big when they came out among the circles I traveled. If putting the wrong speed on a label is a joke it would be a bad joke - I'm guessing it is an error. I think I fade in and out from Transference forward for some reason. I need to spend more time with those few. Is this one of your 20 desert island greatest hits albums? Great work on the spotlight. Cheers!

I’ve always thought it was weird that they named their band after that Can song. They sound nothing like Can. Aren’t as experimental as Can. It’s almost like an excuse to tell the press they are fans of Can. Though, it was my gateway to Can. So, it worked out for me. Transference is all over the place. They Want My Soul and Hot Thoughts are worth the time, but my opinion is loaded with bias. When I get done with my collection, R&B hits comps might be the only survivors. We’ll see. Thanks for tuning in Sam. Especially for something so uninformative. Cheers! ✌🏻
