I like checking out other artists because it helps me grow as an artist. If we learn from one another we all benefit and grow.

I used to have that problem 10 years ago, Now I look at OPP with how can I improve as an artist. I know it is in me to produce brilliant paintings but I still have alot of painting miles to go. Great video Jerry 😊🎨

I need a rivalry now!!! 😂 Who wants to be my rival? 🤣 Seriously though..... I am always saying, if you can't see the mistakes you make, how could you ever expect to fix them! IT'S A GOOD THING!!! When I look at other people's work, it's not so comparative. I mainly look at others paintings with one goal. To figure out what I like /don't like and why. If I can figure out what draws me to a painting, then those "techniques" or compositions are worth remembering. I can transfer that knowledge into my own painting style in any painting vs just learning how to copy one scene 👌

It always blows my mind that your videos don't get millions of views. Thanks for trying to explain some of these difficult concepts with the real world example of US politicians - but I'm glad you quickly realised your mistake. What a group of blessed souls!

Oh boy this hit home in a big way. I used to put myself down all the time, to the point where I stopped any form of art or craft but for the past 6 years I started being creative again. Yes I criticise my work all the time but these days I push myself to do better. I love seeing other artists work now and love learning new techniques from them. My theory is that we keep learning until the day we die.

OPPs... i m always fascinating by other artists style but always was scared to use their style. From the painters point, I get upset when someone tries to copy my ideas or style. Now I understand why they want to do that. Thank you for the good talk.

Man, I'm always obssess over one painter or another. I just can't help it! I try to learn their style but it never look like them and I still look like myself. I guess it's a good thing lol.

No we don’t fix it!!! Theres nothing to be fixed! I am no artist, but I enjoy making a mess and enjoy the process! Oh yeah OPP! I get that! But I don’t engage it. I have zero talent but omg that will not stop me. It’s like singing, I am Cameron Diaz at the bar! Lol but only I bust out the mixed media. Just enjoy the process, color and textures! Make a mess! (Oh you ARE talking to serious artists) def not my problem! Lol Love your videos. Xo

Yes, there's always going to be somebody better, whether you are an artist, musician, sports player etc. The hard thing is to realize that and accept that you have done the best that you can do. If one can realize this, then you can have some peace of mind. I guarantee you will still see all the mistakes your paintings and wish you could do better, lol, but it won't bother you as much and you can go on and tackle the next painting.

I really enjoy your educational videos and I do think OPP is real, but the Disney rant is really a more exciting question. I see you are excusing the fact that Disney has booze everywhere and hey why don't they start a club 420? That line of thought begs the question, why don't you spray paint all over the David or draw a mustache on the Mona Lisa? Because times change is that a good enough reason to sacrifice purity and beauty? Why, for the sake of change? All change isn't progress sometimes its just change. This leads to a much better question focused on the purpose of art: Should artists strive to be current and popular to sell art vs making meaning or having a message even and especially if your art is unpopular.

Love this!! Great comment! :) Personally, I prefer Walt-era Disney due to quality that even their modern artists say is currently unreachable. In this case, the change was not progress, imo.

Thanks Veronica, I think you make some good points. I certainly would not want to see established pieces of art changed. Walt himself always discussed how the park would change over time. To call a Disney Park a piece of art is fair. However, the artist himself said it was a piece that would never be done. He might have not been referring to alcohol, but he knew that if it stayed the same people would get bored of it. I do not believe the art you mentioned, the David or Mona Lisa, were meant to be altered. The artist finished their work and that was that. At the end of the day, the main reason for adding alcohol to the parks is obviously money. No one can say for sure what Walt would have done, or how he would have responded to the current demand of shareholders.

I obsess over things at times. If I see a technique in lets say a painting or a piece of sculpture - if it gets to me - I ll spend hours for months testing things until I figure it out. In the end I come up with a ton of my own techniques while I work my way thru this obsession. Once I wanted to figure out what made an impression of a certain pattern in clay - took 4 months... I got very close to the impression I wanted. My end result though was completely my own - sort of some off combination of what I learned during my struggle. I currently obsess over dynamic ways to draw water in illustrations :). It is painful - not gonna lie...But I totally get the OPP and just in general - artist obsession over something- if you can channel it somehow - it can produce lots of good art of your own.

The 1950s and 60s were pretty loaded down with alcohol. Martini lunches were a common thing. I don't necessarily think there was a "taboo" with it in Walt's mind, as an evening drinker himself. The Disney Co. adding alcohol is a financial move (like everything else they do), one in which Walt was aware of. He said, "I could have got most of my costs back [on building Disneyland] with beer concessions alone. A lot of adults will come here, but Disneyland is primarily for children and I don't think kids and liquor mix." And additionally, "No liquor, no beer, nothing. Because that brings in a rowdy element. That brings people that we don't want and I feel they don't need it. I feel when I go down to the park I don't need a drink. I work around that place all day and I don't have one." I think those "Disney Traditionalists" want not only what Walt wanted, but also agree with his point of view about kids not mixing with liquor.

You're an interesting commentator making a true comment on perfection. I do struggle with this sometimes, but mostly I want to learn from advanced others, so I can be good enough(in my eyes). When learning, by copying, I often do a better job at their painting, lol. But, I'm still not really at the point where I'm choosing my own material to paint, and I should be --Another topic?

The whole traditionalists in disney terms makes me laugh because Walt was on the for front of animation and continuously was up dating his technique and ut is well documented. When it came to Disneyland there is video footage of walt talking about him wanting the park to forever develop and change with old rides being replaced by new and introducing new characters as long as the orginal cast never go. He saw all his plans as things that will develop with time, that do things for the better. I understand why he didn't want alcohol being available at Disney as he saw it as a childs paradise and doesn't want that spoilt by intoxicated adults. Walt envisaged apcot (sorry if spelt wrong) as an experience and a big part of all culture's is alcohol and its different with each country. Walt was a pioneer forever showing intrest in new and upcoming technology and industry. So Traditionalist need to go and research the man before saying anything x

I agree... with everything you said, except for one thing.... I happen to agree with the “no alcohol” and “marijuana being illegal” stuff...... (but that’s just because of my own personal views about drugs and alcohol.... - has nothing to do with your point you’re making about OPP. I love the painting that’s behind you. ;)
