My Mum is an artist, and swears by using random materials as art supplies. She uses old library cards or rewards cards for stores in the same way they suggested using a credit card, because they're easy to wipe clean and are hard enough to leave a solid line, but can also be scraped down the page or canvas for different texture. They're also awesome for texture paste if you don't have any other kind of scraping tool.

I haven’t really seen anyone use olive oil with colored pencils. Usually it’s baby oil, Vaseline, or gamsol/odorless mineral spirits that people use to blend out pencils. You need several layers of color so that the oil has enough pigment to break down and move around the paper.
@CassandraHanley2 жыл бұрын
@@grannym2880 yes. And that oil will ruin the paper over time. That’s why artists use odourless mineral spirits, because it will blend the pencil, then evaporate off into nothing

I did image tracing with sharpie markers on dollar store glass picture frames with preschoolers (taping the edges for safety) they used colored sharpies to coloring in their tracing then we put it back in frame without the backing. It turned out very cute and the pre k’s loved that they could draw a favorite character ( had Batman, Winnie the Pooh, transformers etc to select from). Key was to tape the paper to the glass before tracing
@Mostlymid2 жыл бұрын
So yeah. The reason nobody will tell you to use olive oil to blend colored pencils is because 1. oil degrades the paper, 2. it soaks into the paper and spreads, 3. odorless mineral spirits and zest-it are far better choices and that's what they're for, and, finally, 4. using salad dressing on your art will make your house stink. Please don't 😆

For an odds and ends jar you’d have to be careful because any little thing could scratch the acrylic paint off the interior of the jar. I would use glass paint that you bake on. I recently used some on a $2 salt shaker to make it more personalized and it worked great! The stuff I used was translucent, but they make opaque glass paints that bake on.

@@wrongturnVfor I have also used baby oil, it works really well it doesn't get mouldy in dark scrap books like some cooking oils ( found that out the hard way!). I would also like to point out to people that a few thousand years ago some clever people worked out the pigment with oil benefits, today we call it "oil paint". Linseed oil works beautifully, and certain quality made Linseed oils are archival as well. It is a lot of fun to play with and costs next to nothing (the baby oils and cooking oils I meant, not the archival Linseed - that S*%t is expensive!)

I've used a variety of oily items to blend colored pencils. Chapstick even works! Petroleum jelly, baby oil (my fav), etc. A variety of tools to apply/rub in - collon swabs, old paint brushes, pretty much anything that might get in those tiny spots without trouble. A tiny amount of oil will do it - too much & you CAN over-saturate your paper, and some products will forever leave a wierd sheen in that area. Edited to add: You may struggle to add additional colored pencil layers to these areas, so proceed to blending stage with caution. View it as a "final" stage in the creation.

You can use baby oil as well. The Q-Tip works better than a brush because it has more friction to move the pigment around. A glass bowl or a metal tray(like a cookie sheet) would work for the hot glue/mask hack.

This was a fun video! Loved the editing and cameraman Cam😊 Baby oil works even better than olive oil- it’s basically a DIY solvent, which is something a lot of pencil artists use on lower layers to save time and fill out colors. Olive oil and other oils will sometimes change the color of the paper, so they’re not as good. The key is not to use too much. And it would probably work for crayon too- it breaks down the wax and pigment. Nail polish remover also works great! I’d suggest a cotton bud instead of a brush to reduce the amount you apply 😊
