I LOVE your videos, they have helped me sooooooo much with my animal paintings. I work mostly in pastel, and thanks to you, Jason, I have improved greatly over these past couple of years. I am "old school" in that I can and do many free hand drawings, but over the past 5 years I have had problems with my sight (I only see from one eye)- and have found the line tracing method useful, and of course measuring as well. Thanks So Much for your help!

Last weekend I downloaded "the Rose" from your website. Simply just to see how it works for me. Fantastic! I couldn't draw for a long time due to circumstances. The 2 photos, full colored and line art, gave me a greater understanding of the object. I still continued with my free hand drwaing to regain my skills. But it was surely an acceleration, which wouldn't have happend in the classic way. Thank you very much!

Does this method work for colored pencil work? I tried doing this using graphite transfer paper for a colored pencil piece and the graphite marks that transferred were super dark and not erasable. I'm not sure if it was just that brand that wouldn't erase as it was my first time using transfer paper and the first brand I've tried. Also, since colored pencil is less opaque than paint I feel like the transfer paper definitely needs to be able to be erased or lightened with a kneaded eraser, otherwise you'll see the graphite marks underneath the colored pencil drawing. Any advice?

How are you creating the line art version? I’m guessing Photoshop. Are you using the photocopy filter? I’ve used that for colored pencil. In fact, I take the photocopy version to the back of my paper (it has to be white paper) and then use a light box. I believe I used Stonehenge.

Do you know where to get reasonably priced graphite paper? Seems to cost a small fortune in some places but I really appeals to me as I find the drawing side stopping me getting to the painting stage. How do we make our own line art for our own reference photos? Can it be done quickly and easily in photoshop or software or do you do it manually?

Is it ok to do the transfer directly onto the medium you are working on... even though you may of drawn in the dark areas... will the pastel go over it? Joining patreon in the week !!!

I did trace recently, and you know what? I still ended up spending time on the outline. :/ I'm really that bad at tracing things and I had to do some major fixing.

Doesn’t the graphite turn your substrate (canvas/paper) muddy when you actually add your colour??

I am semi new to transfer paper but in my little experience, or the particular brand I tried at least, the graphite lines didn't budge. It was actually kind of strange. It literally wouldn't erase. So to answer your question with the brand I tried, no. It wouldn't muddy anything up because it didn't budge.

Hi...I watched your video on using a tool for drawing a picture accurately. Here, transfer paper is being used. I am trying to understand why not use transfer paper all the time? I enjoy all of your videos so don't get me wrong. Drawing freehand does take longer, but using transfer paper seems to me like cheating in a sense. I myself think the transfer is easier, but then the tool used in the last video would seem like a long process. Thanks for reading this.

@Gweneth Why would transfering be cheating? The end result is the same. It's just a shortcut.

@Gweneth, there is really no cheating in a sense that the second process of painting or drawing in detail takes far more greater skill than making a sketch (outline). Everyone can follow the method and trace, however not everyone can paint or draw realistic images as that of Jason Morgan. Tracing the reference is a better way to get in the moment quicker because detaling where the joy is.

@@LibertyShuroWildlifeArtist Something I have fought with myself and actually that is pretty solid statement. I have struggled finding an efficient way of getting a good line drawing onto pastelmat. I am a graphite artist who comes from drawing so I can say personally to me it is always 2 steps... line drawing and rendering, and I have only ever traced my own drawing onto a surface to paint. Although in a sense I am also "cheating" because I usually will grid as I want my portraits spot on. This has always just been a personal conflict for me (feeling it is cheating unless i use my drawing to render) and one I will likely struggle with. although now I am a touch closer to be willing to trace a line drawing lol.

just use photoshop or illustrator and just trace the photo and make your own trace copy's, save and print off when you need, rub charcoal over the back of your print and trace the image onto your paper / canvas easy

Jason If you use a red ballpoint pen to do your tracing, you will see what you've already traced.

What is a line art version of a photo?? And how tf did you get one? Why are you beginning in the middle rather than at the start? How about some more background info on wtf you did to get that line art photo?
