I planted 2 idaho potatoes that were sprouting in the house, so I buried them. I can't wait to finally harvest mine. I am so tired of seeing potatoes at over $5/bag at the store. I so want to start having a harvest I can keep frozen or stored up so I can keep fries and pot roast fixins in storage for when I need them most. Time to start canning mine when I get that harvest. Ooo, it is gonna be the best year for me yet!

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm a first year gardener and am doing it all in containers because we don't have good soil where we are. Started strong, but bugs/mites and soil issues have been an issue that is rather discouraging and also not knowing what to do or how to fix it because I'm so new to it. Had my russets in since mid april, and I'll leave them until the green wants to die off so we can get the biggest potatoes possible. This year is only a test, I have a tree size pot 100 gallon I think, its almost at may waste and the width is about the size of a semi truck tire so it'll do. I call it my chip barrel because on the outer edges are 4 russian garlic's that I shoved in hoping to use one for a garlic aioli for fries. God guides us for sure friend, many blessing for this channel.

Great Video. I love the energy and excitement from both of y'all. I know exactly what you mean about being excited and worried at the same time because you can't see what is happening under the soil. I've been growing potatoes for about 3 years. Every year I try to find a way to grow more. I lost my seed potatoes when the power went out for 30 hours last year and had to buy organic and had a decent haul this year. Saved lots of seed potatoes for next year. Grew 3 different kinds. I find that the larger the container the better my results. I didn't have good luck with a garbage can but I didn't know you had to use a certain kind of potato. Thanks for the info.

Should I wait to plant potatoes in zone 7 till March or can I plant them now in bags then bring them inside with growlights?
@bettyadkisson1681 Жыл бұрын
Buy Amish potatoes of white and red . I buy 50 lb bags of each and boy did I get plenty of seed potatoes from them. Ted ones had more but white had some too. Plus I got potatoes from aldi's dumpster and they seeded off too those were a 5lb bag of golden potatoes home grow. Farm. So I planted 3 different types of pots in second week of March in cold frame planter too give them a head start each one week apart. And when its warm enough will start the sweet potato slips off. And will have potatoes & sweet potatoes 4 different months and plenty too store for winter. I have a ground that killed harvest of potatoes,carrots,onions and plums.

Good job man. I have my allotment filled with mostly fruit trees and bushes. So i will be working with containers in between for my veggies. For ppl wondering why we dont plant in the soil directly bc its the cheapest option. Investing in containers is a future investment plus we harvest more from them from a seed than soil(like you mentioned the dirt can be re used aswell).

I've been wanting to grow potatoes, but idk what to use as my "seeds". Was going to plant eyes, but heard some say not to use potatoes from the store, or to use organic potatoes. Well, I don't know where to find organic potatoes, or what to find to plant. I also don't know what kind of dirt to use.
@artofcreationhomestead Жыл бұрын
If you're planting in any kind of container or grow bag then you'll want to use a good potting mix. All topsoils and garden soils compact in the heat and will hinder growth. Any farm supply store will sell "seed potatoes". I wouldn't use regular potatoes from the store because they might have been sprayed with something but any organic potato that has started sprouting should be ok to use
@Gutslinger Жыл бұрын
@@artofcreationhomestead Thanks. I appreciate the response and advice. I guess I'm going to have to buy some potting mix next trip into town, along with some other stuff. All I currently have is top soil and Miracle-Gro garden soil. The Miracle-Gro garden soil looks pretty fibrous though. I wonder if it's the same for tomatoes. I planted some tomato seeds and a couple of yellow squash 12 days ago. Most in the little pod kits. Using the double-cup method, I planted tomatoes in 1 cup full of the Miracle-Gro garden soil, and another cup full of the topsoil. The ones in the Miracle Grow sprouted and is currently looking good. The ones in the top soil never sprouted. I later read that mold can grow in certain types of soil and that it kills seeds, and I think that's what happen with the topsoil. After another day or two I noticed what appeared to be mold. I'm still learning through trial and error, as well from watching a lot of KZbin videos with varying advice/tips.

We add bone meal and kelp meal a few weeks after planting and again a few weeks later. Different varieties of potatoes take different amounts of time to harvest but most take around 90-100 days.
