Hey, your potatoes did really nicely. I would be very pleased with that harvest. I'm eating my home garden spuds now too. My garden gives me just about all the vegetables I ever use. About the only vegetable I ever buy from the store are onions as I don't grow Spanish onions. My garden is right outside my cabin door so I don't have to drive to get there which means a lot. I've always been really happy I can grow so much of my own food. Dahlias are blooming great right now too. Enjoy your spuds. Cheers!

Great inspiring video. Our favourite Potato is Marfona, they are healthy and very tasty. From a 30-litre plastic bucket. 2 seed potatoes per bucket. Bought compost from Garden Centre. We average 9 pounds weight per bucket. Just add Chicken manure pellets and Fish, blood and bone. Greetings from N/W England

Hi from Australia. Fantastic result again. Thanks for being such an inspiration. You had the sort of summer we would usually deal with in SA - probably on the mild side for us. Things I usually have to manage when growing potatoes in tubs are greening of potatoes from sunlight and heat but most importantly irrigation. When it’s hot and dry it’s tricky to keep the top of the pot moist without having sludge in the bottom. If I got ants in a pot here I might consider a flame thrower. They are nasty buggers on this side of the planet. I planted my first seed taters for this spring a fortnight ago (Charlotte) and the second this weekend (Sebago) - keeps the progression happening. King Edwards next. They go well for me. My favourite variety is Kipfler - similar in shape to Fir Apple. They are ‘waxy’ and make the best potato salad ever. The worst homegrown potato knocks a supermarket potato out of the park.

Hi its Tina my favorites are also Charlotte's I grow 2 in a 35lt pot and grow loads when the foliage dies back I store the buckets in my emptied greenhouse I stack them 3 high then cover the top buckets in fleece then just harvest the buckets as I need them I don't water I let the compost dry I have kept them right through to April with no problems love the vlog

I keep used peat compost in dustbins. My potatoes are grown in 20l buckets and I use the same compost every time with added nutrients. The great thing about buckets is that they can easily be moved. The first frost was last weekend here in Wales and the potatoes had a sleep over in my lounge as they are frost tender. The potatoes I'm growing now are second mains for harvest around December. The first mains were harvested at the end of August as they were ready. Average of 2.5kg per bucket.
@mikelucas3746 Жыл бұрын
That's it really. A couple bags of this compost comes in at around £20.00 which rather defeats the purpose. I collect stable waste and compost it down on a large scale and amend with a potato fertiliser. The hard work with such high temperatures these days is watering.

Hello. May 2nd from FL. Your video inspired me to run out to my small back garden and dig the top layer of a small container potato plant and I saw one near the surface. I struggled with it because I did not want to disturb the plant. A double potato finally came out. This is the third time since planting March 1st that the same plant has given me a bunch of small potatoes. I have 30 other plants to let mature in the proper way. I sometimes dig down and get sweet potatoes that way as well. Thanks.

Yep Pink Fir Apple and Charlotte for waxy best flavour - Sarpo Blue Danube for roasties, wedges and baked. I also store in the same way you do - Pink Fir Apple store really well and unlike supermarket potatoes will not sprout in under a week when in the warm kitchen. My soil based potatoes have universally outperformed my container counterparts - much higher yields with more and larger potatoes. This year I have grown Charlotte, Jazzy,Pink Fir Apple, Maris Peer, Picasso, Sarpo Axona, Sarpo Blue Danube and Sarpo Mira. I think the difference was down to the Containers (black) overheating and drying the compost - Considering gravel tray bases to act as water trays. Anyway, you have a good crop there and varieties not often found in the shops (well charlotte can easily be found - but the others...) ttfn and keep up the gardening 🙂
@GardeningWithJohn2 жыл бұрын
I mainly grow Charlotte's now, I did some first early Swift this year as well, but with Charlottes you can harvest early as well, miss the blight, they store well, I'm still eating mine now, they're really reliable and they taste great. I mainly grow mine in the ground plus a handful of tubs. All the best, John, Hampshire, UK

I have been growing in grow bags. Last year was amazing. This year was a bit of a mix. I don't buy compost for potatoes because like you say its not really worth it. Instead I keep reusing the same compost but add potato fertilizer. To me growing potatoes is just for fun really. At this point I think the compost is about 5 years old.

Hi lovely potatoes ours weren’t good this year small and not so many we were disappointed. We grow rocket first earlies we always do like you they work and we love the flavour. We grow Charlotte aswell and they always produce but not so many this year. We don’t normally grow main crop as we have sacks delivered straight from farm and they are brilliant so much cheaper buying that way. But this year I saved one or two smaller ones and put into a bucket at home to see if they would grow but havnt emptied the bucket yet as tops stil green and seen to be still growing but will let you know how they done. I have sent for 3 seed potatoes of 3 different kinds so 9 seeds to grow for Christmas. We have never done this b4 but thought as most people are doing it we would give it a go. So will also let you know about those. We have probs with rats too so we need to watch out for those. Anyway thanks Katrina loved watching your pond building love all your videos. Elfe is my favourite tasting variety. A nice buttery tasting variety. Doesn't crisp up well in the oven for roasties but the flavour is so nice I prefer Elfe to something like Maris Piper. Couldn't get hold of any Elfe this year though unfortunately so I went with Cara instead based on watching your videos. So hope they're as tasty as you claim! 😂 I'm also growing some Blue Danube and some Jersey Royals just because I had some leftover from last year.

I always think I’m going to get more than I do at harvest time. I find it all come down to having nice loose loamy soil. The pots that had thick heavy soil did poorly. I ran out of pots and used old plastic laundry baskets lined with coconut husk and planted fingerling potatoes and got the best and biggest results ever this year. I actually fertilized faithfully and weekly this year with chicken manure tea and got improved results in all pots but really it all comes down to good soil.

Well done with your harvest. There’s no better potato than home grown. I think shop bought spuds are expensive and lacking in flavour. I grow ALOT of potatoes every year and this year I only watered them when I planted them and I was amazed. We only used stored water that we collected over winter so needed that for the greens, roots, onions and some new trees. I mulched the spuds with grass clippings and kept my fingers crossed. I had a little scab but a high yield on pink fir Apple (which I love) and Kestrel. 😅 it was a good, good lesson and saved me so much time not watering. Looking forward to your next garden tour.. x

Nice harvest. Here is central Alabama, USA (which is much further south than where you are), I typically plant potatoes in February and harvest them in June. Usually by the end of June, the soil has gotten too warm for the plants to continue living. So that is when I harvest my potatoes.
