If your seriously into sports/widllife or need 4k video in a DSLR get the D500, for everything else the D7200 is perfect.

Yea I agree but... Being a wildlife (especially bird) photographer and having basically owned them all and if price is a consideration, I would said get the D7200 and a little extra for the Nikon 200mm-500mm lens. A superb combination I used for about a year until the D500 came out. Those images I took are of equal quality. I just needed the things the D500 offered. There comes a point when you realize and the extra $k is worth it.

Matt, good analysis on the D500 and D7200 strengths. The D7200 is marketed by Nikon as a sports camera too. One should only consider the D500 if they are into serious sports photography. If not, D7200 is a better choice. More bang for your buck at that price range. Extra money for lenses and accessories.
@Jorge_Rodriguez837 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. The extra cash could go to better lenses in case of buying a D7200. Also, I tested a D500 at a store like a week ago and sure, it is fast acquiring focus and 10 fps is awesome, but the image quality didn't convince me. I don't know if it was a problem with the test sample or maybe the lens. I know that just looking at the rear screen is not the best way to assess this, but still.

In the 70s, 80s and 90s a photographer could keep a really good pro-level film camera for 10 to 20 years and still do great against more modern cameras. Not any more, with rapid and sudden advancements in digital equipment, and since the sensor and processor have taken the place of the film. What that means now is that high-cost pro-level cameras are only feasible for use where conditions demand high-cost equipment. In a few short years, when both the D500 and the D7200 are obsolete, only the guys who made a lot of money, or the already rich, will retire that D500 without a care in the world! The moral? Don't buy super expensive equipment unless you can use it to it's limit over the short term.
@terrym458 жыл бұрын
I agree with both comments. If fact, it sounded like you quoted some of my previous comments. Not considering video, the D7200 when it came out was the best small sensor DSLR made. The only advantage of the Cannon 7D mkII was the buffer and frame rate, which is part of the advantages of the D500. For me that and the autofocus, is the ball game. (birds and wildlife). Also for an advanced photographer the D500 controls are a huge advantage. I can do amazing things with just my right hand looking through the eyepiece. The year I spent with the D7200 was amazing. What a camera, great results. If you don't, absolutely, need the "pro" stuff It's a no brainer. Though it's a pain, you can learn to live with small buffer. The focus of the D7200 is more than adequate even with wildlife it does a fine job. For many the D7200 is the way to go.

Honestly if you're in the process of buying another dx camera but stuck between the D7200 and the D500 here's a tip. Don't under any circumstances hold or try out the D500! I bought the D7200 on Saturday (I'd already held and tried the D500 in the same shop) by the time I'd reached my car and loaded the camera into the boot I knew the D500 was the better choice. So I returned, changed the the camera for the D500 :/ Now I have no money for food...but I have the D500. If you really want a D500 and think the D7200 will fill the gap, it won't ;)

It depends what you want from the camera? To me, the D500 felt better in the hand, has a fantastic auto focus system, has the flip out screen (not a deal breaker for many people but I really do use the screen for many applications), higher fps, higher video resolution, larger sensor pixel area...the list goes on. It's up to you at the end of the day which camera you want, my choice was actually made with the cameras in my hand, I wanted the best DX sensor camera out there at the moment and this was it. My last Nikon I had for 10 years before I upgraded to this, so I don't expect to be changing it any time soon.

Matt... here is my take. The D7200 is actually even a big upgrade when ( myself ) is coming from a d7000 that didn’t have that great of a autofocus system and did have a OLPF. The D7200 offers a bit better iso performance over the d7000 and I couldn’t be happier. Now the D500 is far superior in terms of the autofocus system with group AF and way more focus points when tracking birds in flight. The robust build is way better than the d7000,7100, 7200 for sure but I believe the D500 is for the working journalist, sports photographer or a professional wildlife photographer. The average person not getting paid for their work or only a few small jobs a year might not be able to justify the cost of the D500 nor is the return on investment that great. But if you are shooting paid sports then by all means the D500 is the choice over D7200 as the work pays for the camera. The only thing to me is if I was shooting a D500 and was shooting sports professionally I would have a hard time choosing it over a d4s or d5.... just my take !!

I have 2 of each. There's NO "blowing out of the water" The D7200 sensor is a tad better, the D500's AF no doubt a step up. Either a great tool to take outstanding photos when paired with premium lenses. It's the photographer, both will git 'er done.
@squashvids10326 жыл бұрын
I bought a D500 in 2017 and used for maybe 3 weeks max and then returned it. Apart from the better AF system, 4k video and higher quality body there is simply not enough advantages to justify the D500 over the D7200. The latter is less expensive, higher resolution, same standard APS-C ISO performance, two SD card slots and all in a lighter body with a built in flash commander.
@dunnymonster8 жыл бұрын
Buy the D500 if you do a lot of event, sports or wildlife photography. It's superfast frames per second, high ISO, and focus tracking make it the one to go for. If you lean more towards Street, Portraiture and Landscapes then the D7200 higher resolution will likely serve you better. You do have to consider the large price difference, is the D500 worth two D7200's? Only you can decide. I own the D7200 and love it...would I swap it for a D500? You bet I would!!! Ultimately the D500 can still serve as a capable landscape, street and portrait camera, the question is is the D7200 enough if you shoot fast moving subjects in low light? I already know the answer to that, if money were no issue I'd have added the D500 to my gear on release. Sadly at this time I can't afford to :'(
@alexandrafasciano95016 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. Have the D7200 and there is no reason to change it. Better sensor, not so big and heavy, best dynamic range. I don’t need the faster autofocus nor the tilt display ( think the display from the D7200 ) is a little bit larger? If you are so professional that you make money with your photography (sports or wildlife), maybe the D500 is useful...? But who does??? And also the little better ISO is no reason to pay the double price!!! Love my D7200. Still a great camera 💪🏻👌🏽I’m not professional and don’t need two bodies, better spent the money for good lenses😉

Hi Matt, I think your comments are pretty balanced, but if anyone is even thinking about shooting Wildlife, particularly birds in flight, the D500 is absolutely the best choice. I purchased one back in May after selling my D7100 and have not had one second of regret. The AF, 10 frames per second speed and a virtually unlimited buffer made all the difference in what I can do with Air Shows, Birds or any fast subject. Just incredible. But it someone want a camera for Landscapes, Portraits or other slower moving subjects the D7200 would be great.

I'm about to upgrade from my very reliable D200 I have been using for years. I would like to get the D500, the successor to the D200, but it no longer has a built in flash like the D200 has. D500 is a sports camera, for any other application I would rather take the D750 or D7200 considering money and value. I know so many people say its FF low light equivalent but then I read few people who own a D750 and D500 and they say the D750 is about a stop better. So with all the contradicting info I think that unless you are a serious sports/wildlife shooter better go with D7200 or D750 considering money is an issue. Having all the cameras mentioned except the D5 The difference in the D750 is lower noise in low light. DR goes to the D500 with the D7200 and D750 very close. D7100 brings up the rear but is also very good. For any application where there is a lot of cropping the DX sensors are better.

I'm in the process of going from a Pentax K-3 to a Nikon D7100 (bought it used). The K-3 is built like a tank. I've shot with it and a DA* 60-250 lens when it was raining all day long. No rain sleeve was necessary. Yet I'm going to the D7100 because, for all the toughness of the K-3, its autofocus is just not as good, by quite a margin, as the D7100's. Of course the AF of the D500 will be superior to that of the D7100/7200. But in terms of build quality, I'm happy giving some of that up to get a camera I can work with better. The better build quality and ergonomics would not be worth double the price to me. And I don't really need the better framerate. I don't like machine gun style shooting anyway.

Probably 90% or more of the non pro`s with a d500 don't use 10 fps much at all or try it a couple of times and realise they are either not skilled enough to get anything decent out of it or that actually they end up just deleting almost all of the files because of how similar they are. I would suggest a Nikon D500 with 16-80mm lens kit on BandH you can get it for $2300 you also get a free grip. Whereas if you want the same thing with D7200 it would cost $700 camera , $1,066 lens and $200 grip I would say a bit more INVESTMENT would help you have a better auto focus , image quality and top class ergonomics. However if you aren’t interested in sports or wildlife and okay with AF-P lenses I would definitely save a lot of money buying D7200.

I moved from a 3300 to a D500. I would get the D7100 if you are looking for portrait and landscape. It's a better low ISO performer than the D7200 ( and I'll go out on a limb and say MUCH better than the D3400 although I've never shot it) and can be had for $700 new with warranty. With the 7XXX series, you can use all the D series screw drive lenses and save yourself a LOT of money on really good glass. I went with the D500 because I shoot mostly sports and wildlife and wanted a flagship camera; the D7200 was nice when I shot my friends for a day but the D500 just feels more solid and the features (oh I love that joystick and touchscreen) made me ante up. Trust me when I say 11 AF points of the 3XXX series isn't enough if you are doing a lot of action.Good luck

The only features its missing IMHO is a tilting screen to shoot video and off angle work and highlight weighted metering. To me the D500 is a no brainier over the 7200 because of the focusing system. Having 20Mega-pixels is plenty for me to make bigger prints. I also like that the D500 being slightly less MP lets you have more buffer depth so you can shoot longer/lager burst when needed for sport and wildlife (and have smaller file sizes so your hard drive doesn't fill as fast). I shoot a ot of stuff at the local zoo and the focusing system lets me get animals behind barriers/mesh and birds in flight with ease.

D7200 definitely for me. This is several years down the road from your video, when both cameras are discontinued and only available on the used market. The D7200 is smaller, lighter, and less expensive than the D500 and has everything I need. Also, it is much harder to find a D500 with low "mileage" (shutter count) than a D7200, since the D500 is/was a pro camera. I was able to pick up a D7200 with about a 6,000 shutter count for $550. Many D500s have shutter counts of well over 100,000 and you will pay in the neighborhood of $750 or $800 for these.

In a recent video you even say that d7200 IQ is quite the same as the d3300 as well, so I am really interested in your upcoming reviews with the D7200!!

Hi just got my sigma 17 50 f2.8 after a lot of thinking for 1 and 1/2 years and watching videos. So i took your professional advice. Hope this is a good copy lens. Now i am looking at d7200 for low light might get this and wait for the d500 to drop in price in next couple of years i hope. I still use my d5100. Like your videos.

I love my D7200 ... but I would definitely trade it for a D500 tomorrow if I could afford to. I shoot Sports (football) mainly and by late afternoon/early evening its not worth taking shots on most suburban fields, let alone at night. Even overcast days can be a bit of a challenge at times. I guess I might be a bit pickier than most because I hate the shots I get at ISO6400 and higher on it with all the noise A touch more ISO and the 10 FPS are very appealing for me.

Thats weird, there should be no issues and no problem at all doing iso 6400 with a D7200

I think that many photography reviewers don't know how to do math, last I checked, 20.9 rounds up to 21. Therefore it's much closer to only 3 mega pixel difference, not 4. Your line of thinking is a moot issue, if you're hard-core sports or wildlife shooter, you go to with the D500. If not, the D7200, end of story.

Had a D7200. I have a D500. Night and day as far as agility but the image quality of the 7200 is really good. If you do BIF like me, the D500 will outgun the 7200 seven ways to Sunday.

I don't understand why people keep saying the D500 has a full stop advantage compared to D7200. Just go to dpreview and take a look at their test chart. The D500 is 1/3 of a stop better at best, because it has less megapixel. If you downscale the D7200 image to 21.9MP, the difference is indistinguishable. You will also find that ff cameras like D610 and D750 has one stop of ISO advantage over the D500 and D7200. If D500 has one stop difference over the D7200, it will perform the same as the D750, which it definitely doesn't.

I agree with everyone in terms of value for 7100/7200. I have owned a 7100 for about a year now, and my biggest issue (shooting RAW) is the buffer - hate it. I mostly shoot portraits / landscapes / street, have been 2nd shooter for a wedding, a couple of wedding receptions, and a couple of basketball events. I have to say in my opinion if you are shooting weddings or events / sports - you need to have fast focus and BUFFER. Having that buffer to allow you to keep shooting - to increase your chances of getting "the shot" (not complete spray and pray ) is a huge bonus. You can work around it of course. Overall, its all about the tools in your toolbox - and having the right tools for the job is important. Do you think those intangibles offset the extra cost of the D500 ?? I personally think so......the guy behind the camera is the most important tool you have and good glass is just as important. I have been debating about some refurbs D7200 vs D500 to add to D7100 ( or adding a monolight). Its all pricy !!! LOL Enjoyed this discussion / every comment.

If someone offered me either the D7200 or the D500 for free, for sure l would go for the D500. It does have 4K video, Nikons best and fastest autofocus. If you are a pro photographer that make your living on delivering the best landscape and architectur images, the D7200 would be a better choice. No other aps-c camera can deliver the image quality a D7200 can. The D7200s dynamic range is unbeatable in the aps-c world.

That is a statement. "Stinking Rich". I think that speaks more than anything else would. I have been going though this conflict, whether, I should upgrade to D500 from my D7200, or stay with the later. I think, from all the reviews that I have watched till date, it wouldn't make much of a sense to upgrade to D500 unless, one is that rich and making lot of money from photography to jump on to the D500 wagon. Yes, D7200 has lot many inhibitions, like its timidness to track and lock on to subjects like birds in challenging situations. However, spending $1000 more for D500 is something I wouldn't be able to justify. Thanks for the review. That cleared up my senses.

D7200 advantages: less noise below ISO 400, 0.21 pounds lighter, 4 MP higher resolution sensor D500 advantages: less noise above ISO 400, better AF system, better viewfinder, 2 fps more in burst mode, and a nearly bottomless buffer if you use XQD cards, which can be critical for sports/wildlife.
@brucebugbee66047 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree with you that the D7200 is a hard to beat value compared to the D500. I picked up a couple of like new refurbished units with less than 1000 clicks each on the shutter for way less than I would have paid for a D500.
@KamenMinkov8 жыл бұрын
I'm most probably buying a D500 in the next month or two. I think it's superior to the D7200 (and even to the D750) for my uses: it has an AF system that's better than the one in the previous flagship (D4s) - full width coverage with cross type points everywhere, it's almost there in terms of speed and buffer depth, it has no silly auto modes thrown in between the usable ones. It should be a huge step up from my D7000 (which I'm looking to retire anyway).

You mentioned that the D500 which I own and love is build like a tank. Sadly that has not been the case for me. I dropped the camera once and it fell on the screen side and suffered very minor damage, but my viewfinder got out of focus and there was no way to fix it. I tried to adjust it and nothing. Also the focus beep sound did no work any more after that. So I sold it and bought a new one on Black Friday. I shoot sports Seniors and it works perfect for me. I had a d7100 prior to that and it just would not cut it for sports.

Considering that D7200 takes black and white pictures at highest ISO I would prefer D500 if I could afford it. On the other hand D500 may be more difficult to use when it doesn’t have built in flash or mode selector like D7200.

pro flagship body with d500 , haha seriously the pair of d7200s with nikon grips are tough as nails being alloy chassis and grips , i use my 70-200 2.8 from my d850 , on my d7200 a 7200 used in the uk is £400 under 10.000 presses .. (example) so yes theyre stupidly cheap ..and just as tough i use mine for wildlife , id rather have the extra megapixels than frames per second , i rarely go higher than 100 iso with the d7200s my d850 rarely higher than 65 iso 100 tops . both let me crop to dx . the d7200 crops in a bit more on crop mode , both cameras have features you will never use , "sales pitch modes" id have the d7200 over the d7500 ( amateur plastic build) no grip contacts , shouldv been named 6500 ; nikons furthest dropped bollock to date , my teenage daughter has used one of the d7200s for five + years , at her stables since being 13 , its visually in great condition , the nikon alloy bodies are amazingly super strong and cheap to run . even nikon pro telephotos 70-200 2.8 lenses can be had for £400 used now the new versions are out , silly not to for such a great camera

I was photographer analog film from the age of 9 years and till 23 years but now i started again only this time DSLR i bought Nikon 7100 for 450€ brand new . Well as beginner with DSLR i'm in the new field of digit photography i can say something i missing a lot in view finder for manual focusing option ( in sports, weddings , street phot. got no time for LSD view finder ) all in all 97% i work with mirror view finder. However i do make money with my baby D7100 and simultaneously i do my home work to be better photographer . I checked out D7200 and D500 and my conclusion as beginner with 7100 i saved hell a lot of cash getting this baby plus lens nikkor 50mm 1.2 AIS , nikon 85mm 1.8G , samyang 24mm, nikkon 70-200 VR2 2.8f out of ebay.com. For low light sports like icehockey definitely my hands looking for D500 . Its depends how much money i will make of shooting icehockey - i love icehockey , i did played it but incomes dictates own rules so i'll stick with my second sweet DSLR body D7100 for the while. I'm in DSLR phot. only 8 month but i see that your reviews has great value to me and practically approved thanks for your pressure time Buddy , cheers.

In PRACTICE, people will choose the D500 because of the autofocus system and the 10 fps. Bird and sport photographers absolutely need those, but for everything else the D7200 is more than enough for enthusiasts.

I have a D7200 I would seriously consider buying the D500 if it could operate the SB-5000 without a dongle. The only advantages that appeal to me about it are the build quality, FPS, AF tracking, joystick and 4k video.
@ralfjansen91188 жыл бұрын
All depends on what you want to shoot. Neglecting the professional feature set (I don't believe in specs sheets), the D500 is an owl (yes, that big-eyed bird that can see in nearly total darkness) with amazing autofocus; it is best on high ISO in bad light, sports, action, indoor etc. It comes to its limits when you set it in bright light; it is reported to clip the spectaculars (brightest parts of the image) too soon. In bright sunlight, the D7200 will give more dynamic range and spectaculars. (I still own the D7100 that is nearly the same, a great camera with even better value). So for the "daylight shooter" the D7xxx series may be better, if he does not need the advanced features.

the problem is that if you work in manual and have a fast lens a D3300 with a fast lens would give a run for it smoney to both the D7200 AND D500 ISO is out the door if you use illumination as part of your workflow ... the D3300 will definitively compete with both at 1/2 the price of a D7200 and a 1/4 of the price of a D500...again, this is based on the fact that you want image quality the features of 10fps HI ISO etc etc ... in my portrait and event work is basically mute... i want a small light camera that i can carry all day with a nice sensor and a fast lens like the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 and that friends IS the best deal per dollar right now.

Okay, I'm late to the party on this video, but thought it worth commenting on. I've been using a D7000 as my "work" camera for years, and it finally broke, so I needed a replacement. My work involves taking pictures at a few events, photography of things such as firearms and accessories for my books and articles, and a few video clips of training in progress for my website. The D7000 suited me almost perfectly. But I was drawn to the newer D500 by all the positive reviews and the pro-level features, because I'm a gadget freak at heart. I rejected the D7500 out of hand because I needed dual card slots. The choice for me was between the D500 and a D7200. I handled them both, and the D500 did feel a bit better in the hand, but the D7200 was more familiar coming from the D7000. Also there was a $1,200 difference between a new D500 and a factory refurbed D7200. I just couldn't justify the difference, for me, the performance gains were simply not worth it given that I'd probably never use them. So instead, I opted for the D7200, bought a Nikon battery grip, and indulged my gear fetish with a clean used 17-55 2.8 Nikkor lens, and dropped $100 to repair my old D7000. I still had change left over. The old D7000 now becomes my back up camera. So I think Matt has hit the nail on the head, the D500 is undeniably a great camera, if you need its features. I just didn't for my intended uses.

Are yo crazy??? The choice is the d500 and D7100. D7100 is far superior to the d7200! Wider dynamic range, better shadow detail, and superior sensor. The d7200 Is only better in frames per second You are a dolt for going towards that D7200 Art. I picked up two d7100s @ 539.00 over the summer. Those and my d700 get any job done.

David Gill D7200 has better dynamic range and better color depth. However, the D7100 is better built whereas the D7200 has more plastic.
