@@wordwarrior2350 I made that decision that is why I shoot the 7100. also I love it. still gives me super sharp images, has a focus motor so I use old d type lenses and it also provides crystal clear and contrast images. I cannot say exactly the % differences between the two but I do believe buffer, frame rate and some other bits and bobs are improved upon. Most import thing i found is find the right glass for what you want to shoot. I have fallen in love my little 35 f1.8 and recommend it to anyone.

"I'm a beginner and hoping d7200 to be my first camera, should I buy it?" Like that man says, the camera is just a tool :-) You can't go far wrong with D7200. For landscapes, or in a studio, D7200 is the best APS-C body ever (dynamic range, resolution). Better than a lot of FF bodies (Yes, I mean you, Canon). The advantages of D7500 and D500 are for action sports, but even then the D7200 is good. D7200 WiFi works, unlike later models such as D5600, D7500, D500, D850, which have Nikon's brain-damaged "SnapBridge". Get qDslrDashboard (you need Nikon WMU app on your phone too, to set WiFi options which are not provided in the camera menus [?!?]). Don't buy full-frame lenses, except for 600mm wildlife lenses - FF lenses will generally perform worse on APS-C than far cheaper lenses designed for APS-C. Lenses you might consider: Macro: Tamron 60mm f/2 (also good for portraits). General: Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 Walkabout: Nikon 18-105 or 18-140 (18-105 smaller, cheaper & a little better at the wide end; 18-140 a little better from about 35mm out, but not much in it). Maybe Nikon 16-80, but it's a bit overpriced unless you buy grey market. Event: Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 OS: if you can find one used, buy it, and hang on to it, it's one of the best lenses ever made for APS-C. Ultra-Wide: Sigma 10-20 or Nikon 10-24 for me. The Nikon is very good at 10-15mm - which is what you buy it for - but by 18mm an 18-105 is better (18-105 is at its best there). OTOH the 10-24 range makes it just about usable as a walkabout lens. I'd start with the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS. It's sharp, quite versatile, and fast enough to allow some experimentation (and mistakes!) with depth of field. Non-Nikon lenses are often a bargain 2nd hand, while used Nikon lenses hold their value almost too well to be worth buying. If you're new to this, stick to new or refurbished lenses, or used lenses that come with a guarantee from the store. Use the lens hood. Get a copy of RawDigger when you've learned what the camera controls are doing. Video is fine. Use 1080P30 or 1080P24, with no crop. Video AF is poor, but if you're serious about video, you won't be using AF while shooting.

I agree.. A more expensive camera doesn't make anyone a better photographer. Very few people point out that fact when making videos.. As far as I'm concerned that was the best line/advice in the video.. The camera is only a tool. Simply owning an expensive hammer doesn't make one a professional carpenter either.

Yep I just got rid of a D200 and D100 and honestly wish I would have kept them. They still took great pictures to this day. Video well they didn't have that but they rocked it when it came to photography. I started dabbling with video so I parted ways with them. It is amazing how the photography world is going like the cell phone market. We don't need new cameras every year it is getting really old

I traded in my Fujifilm Xpro1 for a D7100 body. The Fuji Xpro1 is a great camera but I wasn’t comfortable enough with the menu system. I’m also replacing the light seals on my old Contax RTSII (I love that camera) and I recently bought a Zorki 4K and a lens from 1956!

Great video, Henry and love the images! I'm a D7200 shooter as well and am pretty satisfied with it but totally agree with your thoughts on its limitations. I have a tip, though. If you switch to video in live view and cycle through the displays using the "info" button, you'll eventually get one with a live histogram. Then you can check the exposure, switch back to stills, and get the shot. A bit tedious, but slightly better than having to chimp to make sure the histogram is ok.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a bad camera these days, it's just about what features are important to you. That Manfrotto is a great tripod, as it the ball head apart from you need to keep an eye on that quick release catch. They have a tendency to stick partly down and do not fully engage onto the camera bracket, it feels like it's clipped in but it's not. It's fine as long as you are aware and get into the habit of double checking it when you attach the camera. Happy New Year.

I just picked up a D7200 with a 18-140mm kit lens a week ago, an upgrade for me and a switch from Pentax K7 that I had for almost 10 years. The Nikon wasn't cheap considering its age, in New Zealand cost me about $1600, but couldn't find anything else that I like for the same price or cheaper, so hopefully made a good decision. It needs to last me a while, I don't buy cameras often.

And yes , Nikon does not have the interface that Canon has but it has the better quality then them ... But i hope they will update their software to be up to date with what people expect and need their photo camera to do so Nikon would not be in an disadvantage in user interface compared to Canon.

I miss the live view histogram too, however, but it's not a dealbraker. I haven't regretted buying it and I'm sure I'll never sell it. befor i bought the d7200 i was collecting the money for it for 3 years.. watched about 5 million videos about all the settings, how to use a dslr camera, photo editing videos ect.. finally i bought it with the sigma 17-50 and the tokina 11-16 f2.8 dx ii, and now its sitting on my desk. did about 3-4k photos only, took it on 2 week trip, and i still cant make good photos. too much setting, no live aperture view, its heavy, focus problems), already lost the half price of it.. i lost the motivation to shoot photos, i would say where i live there is no good space to shoot.. thinking about sell the set and get a milc for the money i get.. with live aperture and no focus issues..or leave this photography thing behind forever ugh

Alas, it's now difficult to find D7200s out there on the market, as it has been superseded by the D7500. While both have far more functions (bells and whistles) than I need, I've been impressed with what I've read about the 7200. As such, I may have to look into a used body to pick up.....

I still use a D7100 as a back up to my D4s. I shoot primarily sports which is absolutely the D7100s weakness (buffer depth) but shooting RAW exclusively, it just takes 2 fast cards and some shutter control and it's a very capable camera. The D7200 even more so.

You make the right point. The equipment is not as important as getting out there and start creating. It is the primary reason I flip between my iPhone 8Plus for video and my D7200 for still photography. As to the D7200 itself, I spent a year researching before I purchased my D7200 in 2017. Since then, I have travelled the world with it and have captured some amazing shots. For me, the D7200 is the right balance between ease of use, image quality and dynamic range. My four lenses: 18-140mm f/3.5-f/5.6 zoom, 78-200mm f/2.8 zoom, a 35mm f/1.8 and a 50mm f/1.8. I have a Yongnao speed light for flash and have a remote trigger and tripod. That's it. The D7200 does things that I used to do with my old F5, but in the digital age, without the cost of film. It has the dual card slots which for any photographer is a deal breaker and is a feature not on the newer D7500 camera. While the D500 is the next logical step up, I am far from making that decision and for how I use it today, the D7200 should last me a very long time. For a sub $1000 (US) DLSR and if you are a Nikon v. Canon user, it's the best camera for the money, and you can do 90% of what you can do with a full frame costing twice as much. If you are a full frame must have and you have the money, then the Nikon D850 is the only way to go...but like I said, it's almost 3x what I paid for my D7200...and I am just not ready to go there. So off I go with my iPhone and my D7200...happy to be shooting landscapes. Thanks Henry, your tips are superb....and happy new year!

I love my D7200, I have used it for 2 years and I shoot birds of prey in flight and it gets the job done well paired with the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6..I thought about going to the D500 and then I thought why? The 7200 is a little slower but like I said it gets the job done well

Even if it is the best DX if you already got the D7200 (personal second best after D500) ten the next stop is an really good Full Frame but Mirrorless is getting stronger and closer to the DSLR focusing and quality (except the live view there mirrorless beats any DSLR). That is my "crappy" advice to you ;3 .

@@Narinjas I see your point but since I shoot wildlife only I prefer a crop sensor so I can crop my photos without running into noise problems, I will probably upgrade to the D850 because with the push of a button you basically have a D500 and then if you want to shoot landscapes you have the full frame sensor...Mirrorless from what I have experienced is great if you like studio work or street photography but they have a long way to go before they are ready for low light birds in flight photography, and the build quality is questionable at best..too many electronics to be getting cold and hot and then out in the rain and high humidity, they just seem to have a very high failure rate for outdoor use...your advice wasnt crappy, maybe in a few years mirrorless will be the way to go :)

I do have a Nikon 200-500 on a D500 and the focus speed is nothing great. Just ok. My 70-200VR lI and the inexpensive AF-P 70-300vr focus lighting fast, so I don’t think you’d gain much with the D500 and 200-500. The camera is everything everyone says about it and more. I upgraded from my 10 yr old D90 so it was a huge jump.

What a decent video! It just popped up for me as recommended, probably because I use a D7200 too. It can be seen that you love what you do! The quality of this video is way above than I would expect from the number called subscribers and not because people under some kind of number dont make good videos, its because what you are doing is a huge work, and puting this ammount of effort into something just because you love it makes your video even greater! I have the D7100, had it for years now, also a great camera. I went from D3200 to D7200 and can see a big difference. Daughter now uses the D3200 and is getting some great results with it. I did find though that my stock 18-55 lens just didn’t want to function correctly with the D7200...so I bought the Sigma 17-70...which is pin sharp. You should try it out. With regards to the live histogram, you could compose in movie mode first as the histogram is available there. Once happy, switch back to photo mode and get that shot.

@@1178594 you won´t have any problems, focuses in dimmer light conditions down to -3EV! Better than the new Z series :) . I bought it November 2015 and the actual shutter count is on 152.000 , no problems by now! Use it on street parades with almost no light, wedding, events, products, portraits, etc... WIth Sigma Art series its almost like FF and sometimes superior. Can see most of my photos at Candombe TV Facebook or #maxilopezca.

I'm using the D7200 for videos and artwork pictures. The video quality for me is good especially when you set it to flat and high quality, it is very flexible in editing. 1080p also is enough for me right now but i guess if you will want a 4k camera , this is not the one for you. I really love though with this camera is how it gets the details properly especially when I capture my artworks, very high quality/hi res!!

I have a D7200 for almost 3 years. Love it and can’t see myself upgrading it any time soon. More than enough camera for most people. I forgot to mention that my video monitor also has a live histogram. It has focus peaking, which on a 7 inch screen makes focusing a manual lens really good, and older Nikon lenses are cheap and very good. I have a 105 made around 1974, I paid 90.00 for it, and it may be my favorite lens. I think landscape photos taken on a tripod it will work very well for.

Actually I prefer to use a small tablet of even a cell phone for live view as opposed to an articulating screen. It gives you a much larger view. qDSLR is a very cheap app that accomplishes this well with the d7200. You can sit the cam on the ground and stand upright with essentially full control short of optical zoom.

I shoot professionally with a D7200. Fantastic camera, great all-around model. The "upgrade" D7500 didn't offer dual card slots (but did have 4k, which I care nothing about), so I couldn't trust it to use for work where redundancy was a necessity.

Excellent video, Happy New Year. I have recently upgraded from the Nikon D80 to the D7200 and a love the feel and quality. I had the same issue when choosing a camera to upgrade to when it came to the tilting screen. I am also a landscape photographer. It was between the D7500, D500 and D7200 but in the end it came to cost. The D7200 is a fantastic camera. To get over the fixed screen I use an app named Cascable to wirelessly connect which gives full manual control and allows me to compose and expose without getting on my knees lol. I use a D7100 and like it a lot. Most of the big advances, at least as far as I can see, are in video, low light photography, and fast auto focus on a moving subject. Unless you are taking videos of moving landscapes at night, none of that applies, there really have not been any advances since 2015 in the type of photography that you do, I think older cameras will work quite well. I bought a video monitor because I am in a wheelchair and cannot hold the camera high or low. The video monitor is a bit clumsy, but allows me to do that. It also has a sun shade which cuts the glare you get on the live view monitor. I would think high dynamic range and good resolution are important when taking landscape photos. The D7200 has both of those.

Absolutely Henry! I have 2 - D7100's , 2 - D7200's, a D750 and a D810. Aside from fashion photography for my fashion design / retail business, I do real estate photography as well as home inspections which I use the 7100's & 7200's for and if they get bumped or broken, I'm not out much! Bought them new and all four have been real horse horses which no problems or issues. For someone starting out I highly recommend them! I do have a few DX lenses for them, but normally use my FX lenses on them. If someone takes their time and learns the limitations of both bodies, you can still get pretty darn good images even with kit lenses. One negative, Nikons are just not as good as my Canons that I solely use for video due to the auto focus, but most know that. Still wise, I personally prefer my Nikons fthongh.

Since 2014, my camera has been the D7200. I agree with your assessment. Mine’s been to Hawaii twice, various places in USA and Canada on two major motorcycle trips, and some portraiture shoots recently. During the pandemic, some tabletop work has been gratifying. My next camera will be a Z6, perhaps at the end of June. All the good things of the D7200 with a bunch of improvements, including many of the deficiencies you mentioned. Thanks.

As others have commented, don't worry about the camera you own, as your images are epic. And it is clear you understand a major part of your art. I run with a Nikon Df, I bought it preloved, its amazing, and only 16mp. It has a huge dynamic range even in low light. And I would not trade it for the newest Nikon kit. I also use a Leica X typ 113, a crop fixed lens camera, and a beaut for all kinds of photography needs. If you enjoy the output and dynamic range of the 7200, then stick with it and enjoy it.

Just upgraded my venerable D7100 to a D7200, and so far, I’ve been very happy. It is a bit different being a different sensor, so post is taking a little getting used to. Yet it’s AF is faster, it does better in low light, and yet everything else is what I am used to. I’ve tested it on everything from landscapes to hockey games to railroad operations under the cover of darkness with minimal existing light, and its handled all of it well. I do wonder what difference FF would make, yet for now, I am satisfied. Just found your channel, subscribed! Cheers from California

I've had the d7100 for years and really appreciate the camera. Recently I picked up a d500 in mint shape and that does have a tilting screen that makes life easier but it is a heavier camera so keep that in mind.

A good and honest review. The only thing I would say is if your thinking of getting a camera like this in 2019 go for the Nikon D7500, on comparing the two it;s noticeably better in pretty much every aspect (other than having one card slot, but that's not an issue as all you need to do is carry a spare).

Good to see you with the new tripod out, finally. The D7200 is indeed a great camera body. I have only used it for wildlife though, when I had rented it actually. All the negatives that you mentioned are more or less covered in the D500, which I finally purchased (since I was and still am, mainly into wildlife), and I am glad about my decision. I do lose 3 mega pixels, but that's not a big deal. Happy new year, and looking forward to more lovely images and videos in 2019.

I do a lot of action sports photography and I have a D500 and a D7200. The D7200 is still the camera I use for any landscapes or pictures of items not moving, in saying this is is still great for moving items as well. Yes not having a movable screen is a pain in the proverbial sometimes, however it is far outweighed by the other features.

I've had my D7200 for just over a year too and I love it. I agree about the lack of live histogram too. I also shoot mainly landscapes but have had great experiences with astrophotography, headshots, street, portraits and action/lifestyle :D

A bit disappointing about not having the histogram in Liveview but it really isn't the end of the world and i've managed without it so far(my previous camera to the D90, the D70s, didn't even have Liveview!). The D7200 is a great camera. I shot mine for two years before getting my D810. The D7200 is great for all the reasons you noted. I never shot video (still don't) so I can't speak to that. I do print some images and the D7200 did fine printing 12" X 20" images. I didn't print larger than that with it but suspect it would be fine for larger prints also. I do typically print 16 X 20 with my D810. I've thought about selling my D7200 and lenses but honestly, it is a great backup and I like it so much, I've just held on to it. I think your pros and cons were spot on Henry.

Many many thanks for pointing put this doesn't have a live histogram. You've saved me an expensive regret. Decided this feature is non negotiable for my next camera. Ordered one from Wex. Then looked at reviews. Found yours. Can still return for free. Otherwise may not have realised in time. It'll have to be a d7500 or d500. Love that 'alpine' pic on your site favourites.

Hi Henry, I've had my D7200 for about 6 months now, I fussed about going full frame but I five dx lenses inc. the 35mm and 50mm and I couldn't justify buying more glass, so I went with the D7200, and never regretted it, I Use the D5200 for the shots I have to take from very low down as its got the articulated screen. your landscapes are amazing and makes me wish I could get out to all these lovely national parks. great work keep it up.

To all D7200 owners - this is a great camera. Hang on to them! I moved to the D500 and sold my D7200 and I was so disappointed. The D500's highlight-weighted metering feature - it is rubbish. And spot metering to a single AF point acts more like a cluster of points now rather than a single pin-point. My keeper rate went through the floor with the D500. Maybe they optimized it for birding so much that capability for stills became sacrificed. I don't know. I'm so sad now that I jumped ship and went Canon as of last week. Don't "upgrade." Keep it.

Did you try to figure out what was wrong? For general photography a D7200 is very good but no one reports the same problem you did. The highlight weighted metering option is on other models as well and it is a very popular feature for event, wedding and sports shooters. There is no Canon that does better in the crop realm than a D500, just as no Canon tops a D850 in the FF field.

I have a couple of D7000 bodies and I love them. When you've learned your photography using a totally manual Zenith TTL film camera and come through several Practikas, Olympus OM20 before getting my first Nikon film camera and Bronica ETRS then my first Digital a Nikon D70 , the D7000 is mind blowing. I don't envy younger photographers who've never used film cameras, there's no better way to learn. You very quickly learn from your mistakes. I'll never forget the nerves waiting to get my prints back for your first wedding! Getting a bit long in the tooth to buy a newer Nikon but would love to try out my wonderful Tokina 11-16AT-X on a full frame Nikon!

Thank you sir. I'm learning on the d7200 in preparation for d850 I've purchased. Never used anything but 35mm film in 1980vas teenager. So I'm excited to stay out of dark room. Never enjoyed that whole dark room thing. I'm a retired engineer, I'm shocked how they've ABSOLUTLY LIMITED the processor for marketing purposes. You should be able to (voice activation) give command like, heavy Bokah in all areas beyond target. It should do HER Etc. All by voice. By market would run out of scams fast. With my 35 years of computer knowledge at program level, I'm now actually reaching in the program, and can re write what desire. All I need is a sensor for voice command. It's pretty easy. Just time consuming. Could take me a month to complete. But my point is were all getting screwed. But it's still awsome. Just nerve racking how controlled the world is. On the Photo side is THE BEST camera for APS-C. On video of course it falls in 100th position but the RAW are astonishing. Put it aside of D500 and I do wonderful Images printed up to 90cm. I decided to stick to DX format for mainly costs and weight (hiking). Never be more happy with such camera.

The Nikon 7200 DSLR is AWESOMELY RELEVANT in 2019 - of course , it's only as good as the photographer whose using it .I use the 18-140 kit lens for everything from nature photography , to car shows , to airshows , and I have no problem whatsoever .One notable advantage over the 7500 which has one memory card slot ONLY , is that there are two memory card slots ( in the 7200) , which means on an average holiday , I don't have to worry about bringing a spare ( memory) card (in my camera bag )

@@wordwarrior2350 - I'm lucky enough to own 2 D 7000 series cameras - the seven thousand two hundred , I use as my main camera ( 18-140 everyday lens ) , and the D 7000 with either a Sigma 10-20 f 3.5 or 70-200 f 2.8 lens .Once the lens is on , it doesn't usually leave the camera body, until I return home from the shoot , so that no dust can enter the camera body - my plan being that I have at least " a few " pictures from a shoot , even if one camera/ SD card fails - then there's always the (smart) phone camera which I use for sample pics .I have found also that shooting auto ISO is a godsend in some situations

@@dovidell Well, then you get my point. Its irrelevant. I use a 128GB card in mine, and have never even come close to filling it up on a single trip. If I was doing an EVA out in space or on the moon, I would want the second card slot. Otherwise, its just not a thing. It is not a notable advantage over the D7500. Its not an advantage at all, especially vs any camera with BLE enabled Snapbridge and a phone in your pocket. Its always connected and ready to go, if that is what you want.
