Today we will be Tattooing several pieces/brands of Fake Skin, in order to find the best fake skin to practice on. I start with the thinnest and cheapest fake skin then slowly move along to what I think is the best of the bunch. We will start off by laying down a stencil on each piece to see how well the fake skin takes the stencil and how well the stencil holds up after only drying for a short 10 min. Next I will begin lining each piece using the CNC Q2 and a 9 tight round liner. Also we will be shading the fake skin with a mag needle using both the whip shading technique and the pendulum shading technique. The products used in the video are REEL SKIN, POUND OF FLESH and 2 off brands one very thin and the other a bit thicker. Big thank you to Mike Johnson for sending these skins in for us to test out!! Below are some links to where you can find these skins. There are other places you can find these as well these are just the places I found them at.

If you hit your stencil (after applying it) with a hair dryer on high heat holding it roughly 1/4-1/2” away from the skin for a couple minutes and then let it sit for 10 mins, you won’t have to wait overnight.

I just switched from el cheapo's to the reel skins and the difference is unreal, now i feel like i'm tattooing through butter! Cheap ones created a lot more resistance so my lines were always ragged and scratchy too but just the change in skin has made my lines way smoother and better saturated. definitely worth the extra coin

So glad you made this video. When I first started I of course used the thin horrible skins. I was discouraged for quite some time because of non stop issues with it, the staining, shredding it while trying to color pack, how hard it was to get ink to stick etc. I wasn't sure if I needed better cartridges, if my machine was bad, I just had no idea why it was such a pain. It was a couple years ago but man that stuff was awful. I rarely use skins anymore unless I'm trying out new promotional goodies but i use the no name thick stuff too. The other 2 brands are good for beginners since its easier to work with but not worth the cash once you have your bearings. I love your channel and your support of self taught artists. There isn't enough love for the self taught peeps. I see the comments in your videos and sometimes I'm like "ohhhhh heckkkk no" but then I remember that I started in my kitchen and how its better to spread love and education then judge those who are still learning. Thanks for always reminding me to keep my roots at the front of my brain and to share love not judgement ♡

Very thorough review. I used all except pound of flesh. My resumee: I would stick with the normal fake skin (number 3 in your ranking). Why? The reel skin rips easily on bigger pieces and somehow it never really becomes dry and begins to stink rotten & moldy after some time. I don't know why, because that doesn't happen with other fake skins. The difference between the normal fake skin and the reelskin is mostly the strechability. And that's something that really doesn't matter that much on fake skin. Because the stencil goes off so easily I usually avoid stretching the reelskin properly as I would with skin anyways and the price difference is something to keep in mind. Also the normal fake skin often has holes on the sides to attach to a bottle to learn tattooing on uneven surfaces which is a big plus. Stay with the normal fake skin, everything else is just playing around but really not that necessary. It's anyways different to tattoo on real skin, no matter if you practiced with reelskin or normal fake skin. Once you know how to tattoo on skin you can easily just try out new techniques on the normal fake skin.

@ArtSomething
@ArtSomething 3 жыл бұрын
My wife got that for me it think she ordered it somewhere online, it wasnt very expensive. Well I havent actually used PIG skin before so I couldnt give you my opinion on that. But from what I hear pig skin is much closer to real skin then any fake skin will be. So if you can get some pig skin I would say go for it. But practice on fake skin first if you can just to get the fundamentals down before going to the pig skin.

great video, I'm a realism artist and I've used fake skins before. I think reel skin is the best as it's very stretchy , I find that if u set it up around a rolled up towel in suran wrap and tape it down with tape and apply a slight stretch in it feels the most realistic to practice, however blacks will not be totally saturated but slightly milky as the tattoo progress, but I like how it will tear if you do too many passes letting a learner learn to be efficient without creating too much trauma..

I’m confused about the needles though I have to learn. I thought the needle was supposed to stick out of the cartridge? It seemed the needle was barely poking out once inserted until stepping on the foot pedal. I had to use the foot pedal to be able to dip the needle in the ink. It seemed the needle didn’t hold the ink, sometimes I had to dip it twice until it went into the skin! Is there something I don’t know? Oh and I used Yeulong fake skin

Thank you for all of your videos. They have been a big help. I am a night shift worker and I am looking to learn how to tattoo since I have a lot of sit down time at night, I have purchased the mast tour pro and was curious if you had recommendations on what size needles I should be using to learn my lines and to learn shading. I just purchased the pound of flesh rectangle from this video because sadly I was trying to learn on that same cheap fake skin you showed first in the video and it was not going very well at all and a friend stated that it was way to cheap and thin. Any recommendations on needle sizes for someone just beginning to learn? Thanks again man.

Hey man ! I have a question... so I bought some “cheap” tattoo gun off Amazon for practicing which worked perfectly fine ! Well for at least for the past 3 tattoos I did with the gun. But recently I’ve been having lots of problems with my needles not throwing ... When I hook it up to the power box it vibrates but the needle isn’t moving what do I do to get it to move?

Hello dude ! I wanted to ask your advice. What's your thoughts on the CNC Q2 on shading?? People say it's pretty good at lining. So I was thinking to get one for lining and perhaps another make of rotary for shading. What's your advice please? Love your channel many thanks!

I don't like it for various reasons. to start very unsanitary, you have to be extremely careful when handling in, and I wouldn't even think to bring it in a shop. Secondly it gets really mushy as you tattoo it, and have to keep refreezing it to keep it from not mushing up. it also smells like crap lol. it's up to you but you'd be a lot more comfortable with the fake skin. The only plus side is that it's cheap

The first time I used reel skin I was familiar with the cheaper stuff out there so as usual I approached it with a faster machine and more aggressively. What I realised is that I had to adjust the machine to what i would run in on human skin. The other thing that appeared to me was that the thickness was just right to be able to find the right depth and going too deep means blow out on human skin so I found that really valuable and also when I ran the machine faster I noticed that it cuts straight through it just like it would on a human skin. The third thing was stretching Reel skin. You stretch it goes in you don’t it’s patchy and inconstant. Ofc the other stuff that you tried is good to learn how to run smooth lines and get used to the hand motion and the techniques of shading but being able to observe these 3 fundamentals ( right depth, hand/machine speed and remembering to stretch ) as a mentor and to learn from it as an apprentice makes Reel skin the No1 fake skin out there. The only downside is that you have to leave the stencil for over night to dry but that could be down to the stencil primer I use ( stencil stuff and electrum ). I hope my comment is in anyone’s help. Buy Reel skin you won’t regret it.

I agree, after trying real skin its pretty cool stuff. And price does play a roll as much as I like reel skin and pound of flesh I see myself continuing to use the thicker yellow sheets. But If I had never tattooed actual skin before it would be best to at least try reel skin or pound of flesh to see if it helps prepare you for actual skin. My man thanks for the video!!!! HOWEVER for all my newbies just like “myself”… nothing wrong with learning with cheap skin, it’ll make you BETTER and it will SHARPEN your skills! The IMPORTANT stuff IMO is the “NEEDLE CARTRIDGE” the “CARTRIDGE GRIP” and the “INK… what’s most important is the way the ink comes off the needles and goes into the skin with consistency. Even the cheapest of tattoo machines are good enough to run steadily and a cheap power supply isn’t going to fail on a newbie bcs your not working the equipment 24/7 like a pro. If you’re putting a kit together for yourself, do yourself a favor and put your own kit together by watching vids and comparing compatibility. You can have the BEST machine and the BEST power supply and the BEST skin BUT if you’re ink is too thick it won’t flow off the needles properly and if you’re needles are cheap… like garbage cheap, they won’t release the ink properly and you’ll be doing a line and all the sudden the ink will just STOP transferring into the skin and you’ll be tattooing but you won’t see any ink. In reality you’ll be tattooing over the same line again and again trying to get the ink to tattoo onto the skin and you’ll just scar their skin. You can have a cheap machine that has a little fluctuation and you can have a power supply that isn’t 100% accurate with its voltage but when your needle fails even for one second, that shows right away! FYI what ever kit you put together, make SURE you have GOOD needles and the PROPER ink be it for lining or shading. If your getting an ink that’s both for line and shading, make sure your paying for quality ink.
@toysforboysrc
@toysforboysrc 3 жыл бұрын
It’s also a little tricky because the thicker artificial skins that are not as thin as the cheap ones let you run the needle much deeper than you would tattooing on a persons skin hopefully you will not get used to that and then have to readjust what you know when your tattoo on a person… One thing that you can probably benefit from using the thin artificial practice skin is that, you will be adjusting your needle to the same exact depth that you would be tattooing on somebody’s actual skin so the cheap thin skin is the perfect skin to practice needle depth to prepare you for tattooing on someone’s actual skin. What I do is I got a good Quality piece of cardboard and I layer it with one piece of poster board you can get from the dollar store. This gives you a little bit of cushion so you don’t hit the table you are working on with the tattoo needle and it gives you a little bit of cushion for comfort and realism. Being that the skin is as thin as it is, if you can not see the ink on the backside of it, then you are not tattooing deep enough. On the other end if the backside looks just as dark as the front, you are tattooing too deep. You should be able to see the ink on the back side just enough but right before you break through the skin. If you can achieve that and can control it, that same needle adjustment and technique would work really well for tattooing on somebody’s skin and it is a more closer comparison than getting used to tattooing on a super thick artificial skin and then chewing up somebody’s arm bcs that is what your used to.
