You'll see in this lesson that I make a bit of a mess of things by mistaking the line for the balcony as the line for the floor. 😩 That meant the perspective lines were way off for the bottom of each wall so I had to adjust them (and obviously couldn't erase those 'bad' lines. But I carried on because I knew those incorrect lines wouldn't impact the final sketch too much, especially after you've added some detail and colour... A lot of people get hung up with ink because it can't be erased, and they feel they have to use pencil first. But with looser, sketchier styles, extraneous marks often don't matter and can add energy to a drawing. And this series is about working in your sketchbook and figuring things out - not about producing perfect, Instagram-worthy masterpieces! So if you make a few bad lines with your pen, consider carrying on because it might not matter much in the end.

I remember an art teacher 40ish years ago that decided a girl whose art was amazingly accurate needed something more. She took a large brush, dipped it in red paint & made a long red streak in middle of her almost completed painting. I freaked out. She however, being a better artist and person, calmly began working with the red streak. In the end her painting was even more amazing than it had been before. That was a lesson I will always remember.

This was my first attempt at drawing a building. While it's not perfect, I'm over the moon with what I've learnt. I'm looking forward to trying more. I usually just paint flowers and landscapes so this has been brilliant! Thank you!

Great set of tutorials, really enjoying them. Have realised how much I enjoy line and wash which I used to do a few years ago. Many thanks.

Wow! I never would have attempted this sketch with the perspective and the arches. Really tough but I feel up for the challenge now.

Your mistake is reassuring. I often, in my mind, make a mistake and it ruins the sketch for me. It shouldn't do I know but there it is. Excellent process demo again.

This was more challenging because of the symmetry, even if I expected it to help. Anyway I managed it ok. Your method really works! On to the daunting St. Paul's.
