Some time later... WOW... what a spectacularly wonderful demo. In particular, when you started to play your saved presets. Won me over immediately. Understand, I am a guitar player wanting to make music... where anyone who plays... knows a song is primarily the beat and rhythm underneath it all. I want all the ambiance and character that is the core of a good song... where I can add-in my guitar's own unique voice. This keyboard is perfect for me. Wonderfully done. I don't need a keyboard that is my DAW. DAW features are great, but I want options to simply add-in the flavor needed. The last part of this video is supurb! Thank you. Answered everything I care about. Can't say enough about how you chose to demo what I care about. Fantastico!

Thank you for this excellent video. I find that the Keylab MkII 49 seems to have slightly better integration when it comes to navigation with Analog IV than with V. I'm heading now for your "epic" tutorial!
@tecraven
@tecraven 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Srinvivas. Interesting. I haven't used Analog 4 as it was replaced by V - though I do have both, so I don't know about the integration. But, I'm not surprised. I imagine that Arturia have just made V better and also improved the integration. Oh, yes, enjoy the 'Epic' ;) Also, watch out for the Addictive Drums 2 video that I'm working on. Now that is a seriously great piece of software and one I'll be using for laying down all my drum parts from now on, be it programmed by painting midi notes, or playing in via a midi pad controller. Will be out in a couple of weeks.

Loved this presentation. Really enjoyed you playing parts of the classics. I have the exact same setup and I love it. I have also purchased the V Collection 8 so I actually own all of these amazing keyboards.Just wonder why you haven't brought it up because it would save you so much money instead of buying the virtual vintage keyboards separately. Hi Cor. I forgot that V Collection 8 is the entire collection, though I'm sure that people looking into buying any of the vintage software keyboard synths will land upon V Collection and opt for that if they require all of them. Yes, it was funning playing those few classics ;) I'm having fun and games with the Mini Moog and bass lines at the moment.

I'd go for either the Keylab MK2 or the Akai 249 - not tried the latter, but it looks decent and I had an Akai before, not this one, but a different model and it was superb. Essential is Arturia's budget range so I'd leave that.

Fantastic to see a actually good musician using and loving this keyboard! I'm a guitarist myself, but in no band at a moment, so I want to do full band recordings by myself just for the fun of it. I have had a Roland A49 since forever and I have a MPK Mini, both of which I find a little lacking. SO I went out to find the "best" midi keyboard to boost my non guitar skills, it's a jungle, but I arrived at the Keylab Mk II 61 and have already ordered it(in black, it was cheaper). Looks like there will be no regrets. The included amazingly powerful soft synth is a pretty big bonus for me, as I have no big VST library, and the classic synth sounds fits me just fine as I'm into Classic/Progressive hard rock. I considered more stage piano like keyboards with hammer action, but I will never be a real piano player anyway so good quality synth keys is enough. Also, Keylab looks to have about the easiest to grasp workflow of any midi keyboard which is important for a not a synth guy like me. Subscribed!
@tecraven
@tecraven 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Per. You did the right thing ordering the Arturia Keylab as it is built out of metal, 'gigging' construction and the software can be either used as standalone on its own or in a DAW. Just open the included synth software (after creating account and downloading from Arturia of course) and start hitting those keys. Also, weighted piano keys are misunderstood. Now, not blowing my own trumpet here, but I have a degree in classical piano performance and I did the 8 grades in piano before this (and theory) and to be honest weighted keys on a synthesiser would simply slow you down and it would make may rock/pop synth parts harder. There's a good reason that there is a 'synth' action and a 'piano' action. Piano weighted key action is absolutely required for playing Beethoven's Moonlight sonata, but for playing Van Halen's 'Jump' a synth action (still full size keys like your Arturia) is required for sure. I have a full size Roland HP603A digital piano with weighted piano keys, but I also have the Arturia midi keyboard controller (Keylab MKII 49-key) and a Nord Lead A1 synth too, the latter two both having full size synth keys and synth spring action - two different actions for two different jobs.

Yeah, this is normal though. It's like buying a Focusrite Claret audio interface and expecting the full version of Logic Pro (for example) rather than a demo of Ableton ;) For me, personally, I find the included versions are still amazing. Just means you can't do into fine detail tweaking settings, just the basis settings, but a lot of people won't want to tweak anything and will be happy with the hundreds of presets.

@tecraven
@tecraven 2 ай бұрын
Ok, the typing stand, I kind of modified it. It is a regular 'Laptop' stand, but I took an hacksaw and cut the front section off as it was too deep. This is it this (notice two front parts that I cut off with hacksaw): amzn.to/4bT72yV The songmics stand I have here is this one, but, again, I took a small saw and cut the feet shorter and then stuck little rubber feet on four corners to stop it scratching my desk, but they don't do it anymore: amzn.to/4dOI3id But, here is one that they still make, though a little different: amzn.to/3wQsplw And here is something similar: amzn.to/3wMizRP If you go onto Amazon and type in 'Computer desk stand' you'll see lots of similar ones too. I cut my computer desk stand down as I found tilting my neck up, even a little, gave me neck ache. Remember, your eyes are supposed to be level with 1/3rd of the way down the screen from the top with your head an neck straight, as I am in this video. Hope this post helps you out.

It's actually a Laptop stand made by a company called Awavo. I bought mine on Amazon but the front top support arms were too long and had bits that curled up at the front (to stop laptop falling forward) so I cut them off with a hacksaw (it's only light alloy) to fit the depth of my Apple keyboard. The rubber parts on top of the stand grip the bottom of the keyboard so it does not slip. Awavo don't make this one anymore, but they never made it anyway as I've seen three different branded ones that are all identical so companies just re-brand this model. This one is made by BoYata, but looks like a re-brand of the identical one I have, available in different finishes too: amzn.to/2Zlnh8c Or if you're in the USA: www.amazon.com/dp/B08JD7FN44

Hi, now that it has been a year more - I am looking for a beginner MIDI piano that will be portable and allowed in economy class hand carry airlines specifically from saudi or canada to philippines, my country. I want something to learn with as a beginner and will last a lifetime - same with roland fp30x but I want it to be way lighter - either synth or real weighted piano. Pls help ❤ I am looking forward to buying this Arturia mkii black 61 keys color to be shipped to saudi arabia khobar. I just bought roland fp30x from a music store yesterday - but i will return it back because good review videos I watched for asturia mkii ❤️ I never played piano but I am really willing to learn. 1.) One also concern is - if you take this piano to your gigs - what is the most portable piano stand for the arturia mkii 61 keys - that can be modified to carry apple laptop too? If not please recommend the best/sturdy portable keyboard stand & separate laptop stand - both should be sturdy and easy to carry. Please refer yravel cases too for the keyboard stand and laptop stand. 2.) Changing that built-in battery how hard is it to replace? Is it easily replaceable in any battery shops? Or the charger? 3.) For travel - please refer to me a hard case & a softcase but padded in case i can take it as a carry on luggage. 4.) What other accessories should I buy together with the keyboard including speakers and such because i do not know well. Assume that I have this keyboard asturia mkii 61 keys and an macbook laptop - what else would i need to buy to complete my initiial setup and that O can play and learn? With much anticipation and excitement, Isagani

Great Vid! One thing you might consider is when your talking and when playing there is a significant volume change. The instrument becomes way loud and I have to adjust the volume down and then back up when you speak. I believe you could use a volume leveling program to balance the volume. Any way this video helped a lot with my decision to buy this device. I use Studio One as my recording software and if this will interface smoothly with that program it will be wonderful. 😀

If you're talking about using Analog Lab software with your Keylab you don't need the MiniFuse, just USB Keylab into your computer directly and use the computer's headphone socket - this is the easiest way. Nice but is the 61 key more versatile as its longer than the 49 or is the 49 sufficient? I may go 49 mk2 or essential 61? Just unsure.?
@tecraven
@tecraven Жыл бұрын
Not for me personally and I'm an ex concert pianist who required 88 notes, but that was for Beethoven and Chopin. Most rock, pop, dance, 80s synth pop etc barely even requires two octaves so 49 keys is way more than enough in most instances. I went for the 49 as it takes up less space and I'm yet to require any more keys than that for my compositions. If you plan on doing classical piano then get 88 keys, apart from that, all other music I would have thought 49 would be fine. Don't bother with 'Essential' range as they are budget and plastic and not built anywhere near as well.

Yes, that's correct. There are some 'basic' things you can change with the free synth presets, but for complex stuff, yes, you need to buy the full version. Essential is Aruria's budget range that have a more budget 'feel' to them as they are made to a budget. They are still decent and better than many other brands higher end midi keyboard controllers (better than the Roland and a few others I can think of). The Keylab MK2 is their higher end range and they are built into a metal case, rather than the plastic one of the Essential models, and they Keylab MK2 also have a better synth keyboard action that feels a bit nice and plays better and the other all feel of the sliders and nobs are just more luxury in feel. Think of the Essential as being a Ford car and the Keylab MK2 as being a more premium BMW or Audi.

The rubber parts on top of the stand grip the bottom of the keyboard so it does not slip. This is the exact one I have (it has an ASIN model number: AWAVO M6, but I can't find it online anymore, but, it appears to be a re-branded thing so several companies are using the same one and just branding it as their own. @tecraven
@tecraven 2 жыл бұрын
Hi RJ. Ok, first just to clear up some confusion. Just for your knowledge. Thunderbolt 3 and 4 both share the exact same connector as USB-C, they are all the same. Thunderbolt 4 is the same as Thunderbolt 3, only difference is data transfer speed is faster on 4 and the 4 allows you to wake computer. But Thunderbolt 3 is way more than you need in speed for data transfer from the midi keyboard to your Mac. So you need a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 to USB-B or a USB-C to USB-B. Here is a link to one (1-meter, but you can buy as long as you require) example: amzn.to/3OnsmBQ

Hi Steven Yes, you can use it to perform live. Many bands use this Arturia on stage. They connect it to a laptop to use the various Arturia plug-ins and synth emulators etc and output the laptop to the PA. Like any other MIDI controller, you can use it to trigger and play back sounds that you source from pretty much anywhere. Yamaha Genos has MIDI in/out, but no ‘through’ that I can see so not sure how connecting the Arturia up will work on that front. Arturia has MIDI in/out also, but no through either. But I’m sure they can be connected via midi so one triggers the other and vice-versa. Arturia have a decent forum so I’m sure there is somebody there who can answer more definitively. forum.arturia.com

@tecraven

It sounds like a 'polyphony' thing. Polyphony is basically the simultaneous combination of two or more notes (in this instance) being played at the same time. For your info, 'Polyphony' come from the Greek word for 'many sounds'. Anyway, most vintage synth sounds, and many others are not multi polyphonic, they are monophonic, meaning they can only play one note at a time and as soon as you play another note it cuts off or stop the first not and, essentially, replaces it. If you choose a classical piano sound, such as a Steinway, Bösendorfer or Yamaha, for example, your problem should go away as pianos can play as many note at a time as you choose. If a particular model of electric piano, or keyboard, is described (in the instruction manual tech specs) that it has 120-note polyphony, it means you can play up to 120 notes at any one time (in your case held down with the sustain pedal also) before you run into issues i.e. when you play the 121st note, the first of the 120 will get chopped away. Hope this is making sense. So, basically, chose a piano sound such as a classical Yamaha or Steinway and see if that fixes it, if it does, the reason you are having issues is because you are trying to play a monophonic vintage synthesiser, which can only play one note at a time.

Hello sir, what is mackie control ? In logic, and how is it related with keylab mk 2 ?
@tecraven
@tecraven 2 жыл бұрын
Mackie Control is simply a physical mixer with various other playback controls, made by ‘Mackie’. Some engineers don’t like to edit ‘in the box’ meaning just in Logic with no outboard equipment. They prefer a physical mixing desk such as those by SSL with EQ built into the channel strips, or the Mackie ones such as what we are talking about here. So, the Mackie control that I use in Logic for the Arturia Midi keyboard controllers is chosen because it controls the Arturia in the same way that it controls the Mackie control desk. That’s about the crux of it anyway. As extra knowledge. ‘Logic Control’ is a control surface that was designed by Emagic (Logic was Magic Logic many years ago when Apple first acquired them) in cooperation with the Mackie company. Back in the days of Emagic Logic, Logic Control (designed by Emagic) was a dedicated control surface to be used with Logic software i.e. the DAW. Soon after this Mackie brought out a similer hardware controller called ‘Mackie Control’. But, don’t let this hurt your head, it just works with Arturia Keylab midi keyboard controllers in that the software behind it and the language just allows perfect communication between the Arturia and Logic. Some other hardware devices also use the Mackie Control in the settings too.

@tecraven
@tecraven Жыл бұрын
Hi Pauluz. They might be getting confused for the KeyLab 'Essential' models, which is Arturia's budget range and they have a different keyboard in them, but even they would not bend or be weak so not sure where this info is coming from. As for the KeyLab MK2 they are made out of a metal construction and they have the same keyboard action that is in Arturia's Brute high end synths and this action is miles better than the crappy Fatar keyboard that Nord and other manufactures stick in their midi controllers and synths. I have a a Nord Lead A1 synth that cost me. £1,200 and the Fatar keyboard that is in that is absolutely crap, it rattles and has no feel at all. The Arturia KeyLab MK2 is way better, feels nicer, stronger, does not rattle or clang. I have no idea whey keyboard makers see fit to use Fatar keypads as they are so crap. Fatar got a reputation in the 80s for keyboard actions, but their synth action is pants. The Arturia Keylab MK2 is the best synth action I've ever played and I've been playing synths since the 80s and have owned and used pretty much every midi keyboard controller on the planet. Honestly, anybody who is saying that the KeyLab MK2 keyed is weak and can get stuck with your fingers (whatever that means) and the keys bending must have been tripping and delusional while playing one ;) Noel Ghallager from Oasis (High Flying Birds now) owns several Arturia keyboard controllers, including this one, and Brute synths etc, as to many other world famous musicians and composers. I don't get paid a penny from Arturia, I'm not affiliated with them, I just recommend this keyboard controller as after trying them all I felt it was by far the best one out there.

I bought one of these following this review, but despite the excellent construction and (for the most part) features, I just sent it back for a number of reasons: 1. The keys feel premium to the touch, but they're smaller than full size and and wobble a lot when playing and have quite sharp edges. They dont feel sturdy at all. 2. Aftertouch requires unreasonable amounts of pressure and is basically either on or off (trying to control the 0-127 range is practically impossible) 3. The faders have a mind of their own - turns out I had a faulty unit causing this but still, I'd expect better at this price. 4. No arpeggiator....

@tecraven
@tecraven 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, there is a flip side to this coin, Dave. Yes, they are not unlocked so you have total access to every single dial, lever, switch, slider etc on a Roland Jupiter 8, but there are loads of presets for the Jupiter 8 and most people would not know what to do if they were given the Jupiter 8 and all of it's ADSR subtractive synthesis and all the other stuff that goes with it. Just ask Noel Gallagher as he owns a Keylab MKII and he said (watch video on Arturia website, link in main description for this video) that he loves pre-sets and who the hell wants to go messing around with 'envelopes' etc. The Roland Jupiter, for example, cost £99 on the Arturia website, as do most of the other software synths if you feel professional enough to dig in and if you really know what you're doing with those, but for most people the pre-sets are more than enough as they have been engineered and set up as patches by professional synth guys. I know I love the pre-sets that these guys have set up. I do agree that many companies do have 'bait' and I'm not a fan of that, but in this case Arturia are not doing that, they are giving away the full sounds of all their software synths, just with the hundreds of expertly designed pre-sets and a few basic parameters settings so it is still way more than usable for most people and if it's good enough for Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds then it's good enough for me.
