I recently took a look at an Ocean in person, Fisker has a storefront at Marienplatz in Munich. Anyone could just walk in and touch it, get inside, etc. The build quality looked and felt on par with a new BMW or Land Rover, I was impressed. The doors sounded super solid when closing them, the car felt like a finished product. It did have a sticker on the screen asking to not rotate it though.

The Fisker Ocean has been widely reviewed by European car journalists in the last week with production examples made by Magna in Austria who are a manufacturing partner (they also have a minority stock holding in Fisker). The car had overall positive reviews except for software which Fisker state is being updated next week. A German customer has also given his opinion of the car which overall was positive except for the software which he said he will review after the planned update. It’s my understanding the plan is to use contract manufacturers so maybe they can get cars out as quickly as tooling & training can be done. We don’t want another Henry Ford and the Model T with Tesla the only game in town with the Model 3 & Y. It’s healthy to have competition and I personally don’t want to buy a Chinese car China uses unfair trading practices and used the likes of VW, GM, BMW etc to create its own car industry then turns its back on them. So I hope Fisker is a success and once I get a chance to see & try the Ocean I may well buy one.

Well done! This is an excellent critique of Fisker both the man and the company. Its so important to always listen to well-reasoned critiques of companies you wish to invest in as it is very easy to be dazzled by optimistic projections and compelling marketing events. On one hand it does seem as though Fisker the man is selling a pipe dream, on the other I remember a day when a designer who’s failed company had to be propped up by Microsoft, nearly went bankrupt, and was fired by the board…. Came back 12 years later and launched the iPhone by making sensational claims for the day. At just under $6 a share Fisker is a fun gamble to see which story may play out. But the key word right now is gamble. Put your fun money in, not your nest egg.

So my Sport priced out to $44,000 with standard white exterior, standard wheels, upgraded seats and tow package. The heat pump issues did not sit well so canceled the order. Your skepticism is very warranted, but dare I say, it seems to be a bit different with Fisker. They have COMPLETELY outsourced the production to Magna who actually have the scale and experience to bring a car to market. They've done it successfully many times in the past with German OEMs. So in a sense, you're actually just driving a Magna car that was designed by Fisker. Fisker is simply a brand that has no factories, inventories or manufacturing employees. It's an interesting strategy that may or may not work, but it certainly seems more feasible than trying to build a complete manufacturing infrastructure from scratch the way Lucid, Lordstown, Rivian have tried to do.

The EV industry needs a VW Beetle, Mini, Ford Escort, Fiat Panda, Honda Civic. Small. Light. Aero. A workhorse for the people that everyone actually needs. Affordable. Simple. Inexpensive.
@AWildBard Жыл бұрын
The affordable part is the sticking point; the limiting factor. The reality is battery materials, engineering, and supply are all new and limited. The costs are high today and there is intense competition to bring costs down. The costs are coming down fast, and in five years cars will start being cost competitive to ICE cars. But starting with a cheap car in this market would be a definite failure. Because batteries are too expensive. The other factor is everyone in the developed world already has one or two cars. In places like China or India, a cheap 5,000 dollar car would make a big difference for a family or a small business. But what would happen in the US, or even Europe, if you could even make a car like that? Everyone would complain about how slow it is, how terrible the range is, how unsafe it is in a crash. Because it's not 1950 or 1960 anymore. Would a company even make money with that strategy? Not in a market saturated with ICE cars and decades of car user and car manufacturer experience. That's why Tesla didn't try to start with the 5,000 dollar car. They started with an expensive car because batteries are expensive but wealthy people can afford it. And they know what the market in the US and Europe is. In China, there are dozens of car makers, and lots of them are making cheap EVs for the mass market. With over a billion people, the majority never had a car in their family. This is the kind of market where an inexpensive car can succeed. But the majority of car companies are going to fail, or at least be eaten up, because in the end, that is the nature of capitalism.

Sam, I know that, for legal reasons, you need to be "kind" in some of the allegations you make. You left out Henrick Fisker's involvement with Tesla. Yes, Fisker was a very good Car designer. So Tesla contracted him to design the original Model S. The initial designs were very good but Elon and the team asked him to make certain adjustments to match the engineering aspects of the car. Remember, as you stated, Fisker is a DESIGNER, not an engineer. (I've closely watched Tesla since 2003, BEFORE Elon even came on board.) For some reason, Fisker was slow producing such changes and, when he finally did, Elon didn't like them at all and implied they were no where near what Tesla had envisioned. So they fired him/terminated his Contract and hired a new guy, Franz von Holzhausen. He immediately set to and came up with the official Model S designs. But... and this is the dirty part, Fisker had been designing his own version of MS and only a few months after being terminated, produced the Fisker Karma prototype. He had been working and designing his own car, using Model S as the base, while officially working under contract to Tesla! Elon stated he was glad Tesla had never provided him with the actual details of the engineering technicals involved. But the Karma, while arguebly looking good, lacked major engineering requirements and was constantly over-heating and seizing up. It was a failure and many celebrities who had purchased based on hype, were very vocal in their displeasure. That Fisker Company went bankrupt. Fisker (the man) made millions. He is a con-man. Much more intelligent than Trevor Milton but still a con-man. There were numerous funding attempts and it seems the only one to make money was ol'Henrich himself. Anyone remember the Nickola Badger? Well, Fisker doesn't actually make the cars that are designed. That job is "Contracted out" to various companies. Fisker itself makes sweet FA! ALL of the production is contracted out. Vertical integration. LOL. The opposite occurs. So yes, you are wise to be skeptical of the prices quoted for those new vehicles. They are being used as marketing "loss leaders" in order to raise more capital. Fisker Inc will never be successful. Time will tell.

I have watched several road tests of the Fisker Ocean and not one of the presenters explained or questioned how a start-up companyn that has it's car built by a third party can market an EV that seems ridiculously good value against all its competitors (yes, even compared to Tesla). It makes no sense other than that Fisker wants to mcreate media & investor interest that will pump massive $$$$$ into the company, then adjusting all the model prices to actually be profitable. I would expect the Fisker Ocean is losing $20-30,000 per vehicle & hence the calculated slow down of production.... Truly amazing that Fisker can do this again !!!!

Considering the scare situation of Rivian and Lucid, the competition in Europe against Polestar and EV Volvo, I would say good luck for Fisker for surviving....

As usual detailed insight EViking, but it is completely normal to lose money for many years after production start as you know and they are just 6months in, and much of the losses which are much lower than Nio for example, will be due to development costs for Pear and Alaska. Tesla spent 10yrs from 1st car SOP before they made profit, and now make massive money. Lucid is in a worse spot, struggling to sell their brand new limo although the Gravity could change their fortunes. The Ocean is a major achievement as a first car, and their strategy of outsourcing producing to very competent companies like Magna takes down risk drastically. And the Pear and Alaska is mega cool. You could be right, and odds of a new Euro/US brand are slim as we know, but these are disruption times. Hope they succeed! Cheers from another Electric Viking :-D
@oldgandy5355 Жыл бұрын
I'll take either the Pear, the Ocean, or the truck. If they stopped development on the rest of their lineup for a couple years, maybe three, they might have a chance. Forget the high dollar, luxury speedster until they are on more solid footing. If they can get a 500 mile range in a truly useful utilitarian vehicle for an affordable for the masses car, they have a shot at it. Whatever they produce, it needs to be on the roads this year or by Q2 next year, or they are done. At least fifty thousand by end of Q2 next year.

I don't share your pessimistic view about Fisker. They have just secured another 600 million USD in funding and Fisker Ocean is getting great reviews. They have had supply chain issues but they seem to be mostly resolved and Magna Steyr in Austria is ramping up production (Magna Steyr also produces cars for Toyota, BMW and Mercedes so they know what they are doing). If they manage to break even in Q4 I think they will be profitable in 2024. I hope they will succeed since they have some fresh ideas, great design and competitive pricing. The EV market space is super competitive so I'm not saying it will be smooth sailing but I certainly think they have a chance now.

Edison failed 2,773 times to make a light bulb, but on the 2,774th time he succeeded. I think GE went on to be a pretty profitable company.

I doubt Fisker could survive two more failures.
@enadegheeghaghe6369 Жыл бұрын
Your comment makes no sense in this context. No one was making light bulbs when Edison was performing his thousands of experiments. So he could fail as many times as he needed. If many other companies had started making light bulbs before Edison, he would have gone out of business Fisker is in a completely different scenario. There are many companies making electric cars already so they don't have the luxury of failing thousands of times

If people don’t invest in the future at this company, then for sure, it will fail, but if we give a chance I’m supporting the company will grow, and he will be able to manufacture much more better product. I believe he’s on the rice pots even Tesla had their ups and downs, and look where they are today, I would buy one of their vehicles, but I just can’t seem to find any dealer in Canada as we are always at the tail. All over Europe, now the US, China and India next... They are doing everything differently, they have partnered with another companies to bring products out, fast and cost effective. Charging Network, battery swapping, leasing.... Very visionaries, ambitious and aggressive marketing We need them to suceed, it'll be good for everyone..I hope they do

Viking, Love your channel. You are doing an excellent job. all my best to you and your family. But Viking, you are a little bit too negative here. The list of companies you predict to go bankrupt is lengthy and interesting. Fisker is doing amazing, but yes, they are possibly getting ahead of themselves. Hoping they succeed. Amazing cars and I think they need to indeed stay focussed on Ocean production and quality at this stage. Or, maybe they have put this behind them and are confident that MAGNA will take this ball and run with it. The "truck" Alaska is just an Ocean with a different shape. Taken from the playbook of Honda, with the shapes of the Pilot and Ridgeline. Easy-ish to do and you hit two markets with one design. The PEAR is a great concept and near-complete design awaiting a manufacturing partner to catch up, and I hope that Fisker can find that manufacturer. If this succeeds it will be the game-changer that EVs need.

Another great review Sam. Congrats. There is another red flag from history. I saw an article that Henrik Fisker's design company was hired back on the early days of Tesla to design the 1st Model S. After a lot of delays, they withdraw their project, saying they had plans to build their own car. Tesla lost a lot of money and precious time when desperarely in need of a new breakthrough. Their designs have been always fantastic. But you nailed down very nicely: missing connection to reality, and questionable execution are ingredients that should never be on a receipt for success.

I have a different perspective. Ive seen early Fiskers in person in 08 or 09. These supercars were beautiful. This company is has values in making the most beautiful cars. I think the release of several models is the do or die attitude car companies will need to have to survive this changing auto industry. Will Fisker survive? Only the bold will

16:06 "If this man was working as a designer for BMW, BWM sold probably twice as many cars." -> Henrik Fisker - The former president and CEO of BMW Designworks USA crafted the BMW Z8 before moving on to Aston Martin and envisioning the DB9 and V8 Vantage. I get your point and it has to be proved if Fisker can survive but... do your research. ;) In addition: You compare Fisker to Rivian and Nio. The main difference is their production strategy - Fisker completely outsources production to partners so they do not have to build factories (massive cash and time investments) on their own. That's why its more likely that they can produce different models in a shorter time than Rivian and Nio. In return their profit margin for each car is probably lower as well. Will the strategy work out? We will see...
