I nominate the Toyota BZ4X. What people don’t realize is that the BZ4X has terrible charging speed. Most people would think that wouldn’t apply to them and they don’t have to worry about it until they end up behind a Bz4X on line to charge at a public charger. The Lexus RZ sucks too.

The Mercedes EQA is very popular in Germany. I think the main reason for it is the image of Mercedes! I think the EQA is not bad, but it is overpriced and cars like the Ioniq 5 are simply better! Mini has reduced the price of its EVs but still charging speed is not brilliant. The Renault R 5 on the other hand is the same price as the mini. It offers more space, but still it is too expensive!!

6 months of usage says absolutely nothing, I can't imagine a car brand with cars that break within 6 months, use it for 10-15 years and then report back your experience, that should give a crystal clear picture. BTW I still have a FIAT Stilo with 21 years. I'll keep using it till it no longer works just out of curiosity of it's durability and to have a clear picture of the difference between ICE cars and EVs. But It's nice to have EVs early adopters so their experience can be a source of data to make future decisions. Anyway EVs are many years away from being mature. I would say at least 20 years are need to iron out the issues.

Vehicle is well built, nicely finished and real fun to drive. Range is 200km and so as a town car it is great. Handles better than most evs because of lighter and smaller battery. No subsidies here in South Africa. But I wouldn't pay $45000 for any electric car. Sadly only 200 pure evs sold per month in South Africa!,,

Decided to buy an EV around June 2022. After much research, test driving, pros and cons etc. I purchased a new Mini EV in March 2023 (the dealership threw in a fitted 7.5 kw home charger to sweeten the deal). It was the best match for my requirements and it's sooooooo fun to drive. Worst experience was the MG4, it was like driving around in a lurching tin of beans. The I.D.4 was unimpressive as was the Cupra Born and the Renault Megan (getting that test drive was difficult and totally not worth the effort). The Fiat 500e was quite good. The Nissan Leaf was pretty good too. The offerings from Citroen were tragic. The Tesla range had quality issues, couldn't afford the Porsche and I didn't need an SUV or a family sized vehicle. So via a point scoring objective investigation and personal experience of driving lots of EV offerings, I decided on the Mini and I am not disappointed in the slightest. It is overpriced, but they all are, even the MG4 (which I wouldn't buy at half the price).

Fiat has some fantastic lease deals in the US on the 500e (including $0 down $0/mo in Colorado, you just pay tax), we actually picked one up in CA for $199/mo and it's a great car for a short commute. It was a good solution for the next 3 years until the EV market matures and there are better affordable options. We also have a model S for road trips so we're covered.
2 күн бұрын
Those $0 Fiats (available only if you live in Colorado) are a great deal if you can get one. The dealer that is offering them has leased a lot of them and keeps receiving more cars from Stellantis. It's not a road trip car with that limited range, but if you're looking for a city and suburban car they can't be beat for the price.
@skp115Күн бұрын
I don’t understand how leasing works in the US but even the worst leases there look so attractive for us in Australia At 199 per month for 36 months you seem to be going to pay circa 7200 which is an absolute bargain. In Australia any lease you can get probably will end up paying almost 70 per cent of the msrp of the car over the 3 or 5 years term. How is financing so cheap in the USA. We have no such financing products here. What happens after the 36 months?
@multicamzilla4669Күн бұрын
@@skp115 There are two major factors in this case. Stellantis is desperate to get rid of these cars, and the EV tax incentives and rebates in the US and certain states in particular allow them to offer these deals. I agree the $7200 would be less than the depreciation on a Tesla in 3 years and the insurance is much less expensive, so if you don't need the range and enjoy a city car that's easy to park anywhere and fun to drive, it's a great option.
Күн бұрын
@@skp115 The leasing company takes the car back and sells it, either to the lessee or to somebody else. The most favorable leases are normally on cars that hold value well and can thus be resold at a fairly high price after two or three years. The leasing company also gets some tax benefits. Even with those attractive numbers, leasing is usually not quite as good a deal for the driver as buying, though it offers the flexibility of simply walking away from the car when the lease ends and not facing the risk of its value dropping. EVs are a notable exception because the current version of the $7,500 federal tax credit has restrictive rules about the price of the car, the income of the buyer, and where the car and its battery are built, but ALL leased EVs are eligible for the credit. The insane lease deal on the Fiat 500e in Colorado is because Stellantis is trying to get rid of the things. The Fiat 500e has sold poorly because of its small size and limited range, and the poor brand reputation Fiat has in the US. Another thing that makes it possible is that the leasing company is getting the $7,500 federal tax credit (that car would not be eligible for that credit if you bought it outright but it IS eligible if you lease it) and an additional $5,000 incentive from the state of Colorado -- so they're not actually getting $0 for the lease, they're getting $12,500 up front, it's just coming from the government rather than the lessee. Another benefit for the dealer is that moving them out gets them larger allocations of other Stellantis vehicles that they can make a bigger profit on. That poor brand reputation? The Fiat brand has been present in the US four times: from 1908 through 1917, from the 1950s through 1983, from 2011 through 2020 (following the purchase of Chrysler by Fiat), and from 2024 on (now under the Stellantis name, a company that formed as a merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Groupe PSA, which was itself formed as a merger of Peugeot and Citroen). The reputation mostly comes from the 50s through 80s presence, when the company's cars were known for problems with mechanical unreliability and body rust. People joked that the brand stood for Fix It Again Tony. The Fiat 500 (the gas powered version) was the only Fiat-branded car the company sold during that period (plus limited sales of the previous version of the 500e in a few states as a compliance car), though the Dodge Journey was also a Fiat design; both were built in a plant in Toluca, Mexico. The 2024 relaunch of the brand in the US only includes the electric version, the Fiat 500e.

It is uncomplicated quite lightweight and very efficient. It has all the electronic aids and is very comfortable. For short trips and round trips up to around 220 km I tend to choose it rather than my wife's Model 3. Hey Viking, great video. EV database lists the UX300e as 320l but the Opel/Vauxhall e-Mokka at 310l, another small SUV. Now manufacturers are notorious in measuring boot/trunk sizes differently, so I trust Bjorn who gives 7 and 5 banana boxes respectively to these 2 cars.

In a retired community in Florida to buy a highly depreciated pre-owned Toyota BZ4X, and to use it as an occasional commute vehicle while having a garage charging, the car being garaged, generally it's not a very bad idea. The aggressively anti-DC charging software will keep that car alive while AC charged for decades: recently there were published studies proving car batteries last for very long time.

Thanks, agree with you. BTW did my first track day at Highlands Motorsport park in NZ today in my AWD Ioniq 5. Went very well sandwiched between a Mustang V8 and a new Porsche sports car. Only issue was the sat nav which not only recognised the track but every 30 seconds said I was going in the wrong direction 😂 yes we were doing the track in reverse. So apparently Hyundai accepts their EVs will be used on race tracks. Not the N version either…

Mazda MX-30 is still being made, and sold at least here in Norway... I see them all the time, and it reminds me (along with the bZ4X and Nissans) that brand loyalty is still a thing.

Interesting list, but there are a few more things than price, range and charging speed. I like the Electric Viking, but in this day and age we got to hear more about the software, over the air update capabilities, self-driving, safety ratings, performance, features, phone app, etc. C'mon now.

Personally, I would not even entertain an idea of buying an EV until they are 1. have about 500 mile range and 2. charge 80% in under 15 min. It is normal for me to drive 300-400 miles a day so stopping and charging 3-4 times a day is not something I would want to do. As far as the list goes. All of the current EVs are on that list for me because none of them hit the minimum requirements I have.
@stefanjepp66122 күн бұрын
Go for the Ioniq 6 ! It is a very good car for long distances! Maybe you are exagerating your wishes a bit! I think, stopping for 15 min. After 2 hours of driving is a good idea! So I think, there are many very good EVs out there, just like tesla m3 long range or even Model Y!
@kenwise2677Күн бұрын
Do you really add 110,000 to 150,000 miles per year to your odometer? You must get a new car every year.
@GawriifyКүн бұрын
@@kenwise2677 no... the most i ever got was 80k in 1 year... but i do change my car every 2-3 years. Also when i drive from NYC to Milwaukee which is just about 900 miles it takes me 14 hours. I am not saying i do this every few days... but i do it a few times a year... Its not outside of the possibilities to get 500 miles range. In fact, Fisker / VW / Samsung and a few others have those batteries but i doubt it will be available in the cars for the next 5 years. As for the 15 min charge. I believe it is available right now from a slew of different manufacturers. Thus, by the time 500+ mile range batteries make it to the cars it will be available for them as well.

What do you drive and what’s your weekly gas bill?
@Gawriify17 сағат бұрын
@@whitesands928 because I live in NJ our gas is much cheaper than other parts of the US. I use Toyota Camry to do most of the driving and it gets about 45 mpg. My weekend car is Jeep Grand Cherokee with 5.7L HEMI (in sports mode is like 8-10 mpg, on highway with 2 cylinders off its like 20 mpg). Not sure what it cost on weekly basis... but the yearly bill is about $7k

I definitely will avoid Toyota BZ4X and Subaru Solterra. I don't think they're worth as their price tag. You can buy a Tesla for this price range or any Chinese EVs for way less. Mini eCoopers? At least they still have character. I generally agree what you say except for luxury cars that have proper leather seats, more comfortable and more luxurious features. Also the BYD Atto 3 isn't my avoidance list because it is a lot better than our MG ZS EV in many ways. What about Honda e? This car is the one I definitely avoid due to ultra high price tag. There's no way you can convince ANY Honda Jazz owners to buy a Honda e.... right?
@KimLee-n4c2 күн бұрын
So many good-value Chinese EVs. Because of geopolitics, the Americans, Canadians and many Europeans have no access to them. They keep looking at the >US$60 range and find them unaffordable simply because the numerous Chinese EVs available at around US$30 - 40 are not available.

And yet I've driven over 85.000 kms in my BZ4X and have never had a single problem, It drives well, handles very well. The charging speed and the range have never presented a problem for me and they are not nesessarily the most important thing to consider in a car. Im not crazy about the interior or exterior plastics though.

Here in Denmark, the most sold car of all are the Tesla Y. It´s cheep, lots of space, fast charging and powerfull. However people do have problems with them... I´m planning for the new M-B CLA to be my first EV as I like to support jobs in Europe!! EVs have a 9% tax in Denmark, and combustion cars have a 150% taxation. In 2024, 70% of all new vehicles were EVs. Hope it´s better than the EQA...

The Mini, Fiat 500e, and the Honda E (now discontinued) are sold more as design icons/lifestyle statements than normal cars. They were "always" overpriced for their size (though arguably the Mini is no longer "mini")

3:30 One good reason to buy a Mini instead of an MG is that the electric Mini is the most reliable car you can buy right now while the MG is the least reliable by a wide margin.

You are absolutely correct with the list given the driver only cares about numbers. Yet, if we only cared about luggage space, charging speeds, practicality and other numerically quantifiable aspects, we most surely would end up with auto makers producing only SUV’s. And what a dull world would that be?

Mini is pitched as a premium product and has been since it's modern reincarnation by BMW. This hasn't stopped them selling by the bucketload. What matters to most people is how many GBP/US$/EUR or whatever it it a month along with the kudos of having a Mini. Point is a high list price doesn't make the Mini EVs a bad car and it seems arbitary that they are included for that reason.
