I've been flying GA and airliners for years in X-Plane & MSFS but this one has me stumped. I'm really struggling with this plane. Surely they can't have been this twitchy or hard to fly ? I'm having a hard time just taxying let alone take off and landing.
@mrstyles9999
@mrstyles9999 10 ай бұрын
@@paulthurston2883they were. They required such skill in every phase of flight. Pilots of the spitfire have described the flight surfaces as so different from one another as to say. In order to fly the spitfire well, one has to perform an Irish gig on the rudders, arms wrestle the ailerons and gently caress the elevators. They were very twitchy because they were designed that way. They were highly manoeverable. Which made them twitchy and difficult to fly. In terms of ground handling they are very similar to a lot of heavy tail draggers like the p51. They can be difficult because of the high moment of inertia you have to overcome to start a turn

I'm so glad you enjoyed this aircraft. Beautifully flown (by this point I expect no less!). Yes please to more aeros and I'm looking forward to the nav ex. I'm also realising I'm missing out quite a bit on this glorious machine by lazily starting the flight on the runway, not to mention my half a glance at the manual ... which has resulted in flames, and I think bits of engine, exiting the exhaust once or twice! I love that it does that, and things like not starting if it's not primed right!

Great video - it's always very interesting to hear a real life fast-jet pilot's views and opinions on such things. Can there be anything more stirring than flying this Spitfire over Chico Mick's Duxford ? It's like being at the last night of the Proms. The latest update's flight model caught me out, however, particularly with the engine torque. It led to a perfect two-point take off - left wheel, left wing tip. " This is where it's won or lost..." I know that feeling, particularly with the Spitfire. Lovely stuff.

I'm now Spitfire pilot, but have heard from real world pilots that you've got to be really careful on the takeoff roll when you bring the tail up not to bring it too high. From what they were telling me you don't want to bring it right the way up as you might in a lot of tail draggers, but rather just get the tail wheel off the ground, but hold it low, so you've still got a nose up attitude. The reason for this is prop clearance, or rather lack of prop clearance. The spit has very little clearance between the bottom of the prop and the ground, and in a tail high position, when you factor in the travel on the suspension, you can theoretically catch the prop on the ground, hence staying tail low gives you just a little more clearance to reduce that risk. But anyways, great stuff, always love watching your videos!
@cgaviator
@cgaviator Жыл бұрын
Makes sense. This model is very tricky in takeoff which I guess must be accurate! Though if the prop hits the ground it bends… I’ve… tested it! 😂
@Streaky100001
@Streaky100001 Жыл бұрын
@@cgaviator Yeah, I've flown the flyingiron spit a fair bit myself (the spit literally got me into aviation in the first place, so how could I not??) I have heard the real world spit is pretty lively for anything on the ground. Those who've flown the real thing must have some serious skill! (If anyone wants to sponsor me to go learn to fly the real thing I'll happily confirm that definitively :P) Yeah, I've bent a few props myself..... it's great fun in a computer generated spitfire, but I hate to think what that'd cost if you did that to the real thing. I just know it'd be an eye wateringly expensive repair.

Echoing the call for more Spit content; not necessarily aeros though! I'd love to see a low level scoot around the mach loop and a medium level high speed recovery to somewhere in the East; Coningsby or Leeming? I would be really interested to learn more about how the engine controls work, and stuff like that. In a jet it's just "push lever forward, go faster" but it's more complicated with piston engines, and with variable pitch props!

Good Video! Some remarks from my experience flying Harvards in the SAAF and the SAAF Museum aircraft. I normally started with the mixture in idle cutoff, once she fires, you throw it forward to "auto-rich" . The primer is moved too fast here, it is like a syringe, you have to draw fuel in, pause shortly to to allow it to fully draw, then smoothly push it forward to inject primer fuel into the cylinders. If you do this too fast, you will not be using full capacity of the primer. We had an electric boost pump but in the Harvard you had to keep the wobble pump going whilst priming...this was quite a co-ordination exercise, like patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time! There is a bit of resistance felt in pushing the primer plunger in. Sometimes makes a squeaky injecting sort of noise! Well done, pilots can forget the magg switches! I have seen it! The problem here is that she will run and fire up on the booster coil, but will cut immediately on releasing the starter and booster coil buttons, confusing the issue you forgot to turn the maggs on! The other thing is people often crack the throttle too far forward. I believe this causes a lot of start fuel mixture struggles and will cause a sudden burst of high RPM on starting...ouch! the SAAF Museum MkIX started very easily with the throttle only just off idle. Yes there is a little catch at the back of the stick which holds the brake leaver on which works well. The hand brake system is actually quite nice to use. No steerable tailwheel so rudder which is slightly effective even at taxi speed/surface wind, but differential braking is how most turns are done. Rudder trim was wound to to full right! Yes, 7-8 pounds of boost was more than enough....that is about half throttle! War emergency was 18 Lbs of boost! We would normally use around 8 LBS boost even for a display sequence. The take off was accurate. In the SAAF Museum Spit, you could see a sliver of the spinner above the cowling. This could be easily held on the horizon and at exactly 100 MPH she would smoothly fly off. Canopy closed and then as the speed built, you had to rapidly wind off all that rudder trim! Landing. On base leg, the has a large noticeable nose down pitch with those broad chord wings, when you lower flap. They should include this here. This is great, as it pitches down nicely into a safely steep approach path. The landing gear leaver should be taken out the down gate, held in the down position for 2 seconds or so, to energize the hydraulic system, then smoothly moved to the up position. Do not put it into the up gate, as this will cause the system to go to "idle" too early, leaving you with a gear leg hanging right in front of a radiator intake! Not good! The leaver will spring back into the idle or "up" gate of it's own accord, when the gear is fully up. Anyhow, yes a pretty good simulation with great graphics!

Hey Chris, what was it that you had five years in? KZbin has transcribed it as "shorts to kindness" … somehow I don't think that's quite correct! 😂 Also, is it economics and/or slower speeds that makes the RAF train on these, or is there more to it? Interested in the logic. (Learning to fly fast jets in DCS from the start has been challenging enough, so I can imagine that it is more about slower speeds than the economics!) Fabulous video! Does anyone know how you unlock the primer on the Xbox version? I am obviously asking for my 8 year old son, as it would be ridiculous that a 50 year old airline Pilot would be spending his spare time playing on a flight simulator! 😂😂 Great video as always Chris 👍

Very nice landing sir. I've been flying the DCS Spitfire Mk IXc and wonder about the startup procedure, in particular, keeping the mixture in idle cutoff position until the Merlin 66 lights, then moving it to the run position. I noticed that you moved the mixture to run during your prestart sweep and kept it there. Do you know which is correct? -cheers
@cgaviator
@cgaviator Жыл бұрын
I was following the developer checklist and would have to check the original manual to confirm which. There were so many variants and maybe even procedures/techniques that just do what works! 😂 If I think I’ve overprimed it then while it’s trying to catch I’ll place mixture to cutoff til it starts.
@DanBlake3rd
@DanBlake3rd Жыл бұрын
@@cgaviator I just read a comment in the official MSFS forum that it is a limitation of the sim and that the engine won't light without mixture set in the full position. It makes sense that FI would have their checklist that way.

@@DanBlake3rd interesting! Though I’m sure that when it was flooded that I managed to start it but turning the engine with mixture off and then hitting mixture rich when it started to splitter into life. Perhaps it was coincidence. Thanks for the info 👍🏻

Try holding stick back to keep tail wheel firmly on the ground initially. Make sure rudder trim is appropriate. Check the wind, it will want to weather cock into it. Try a little aileron into wind perhaps. Otherwise just look down the runway and be quick but smooth with the rudder 👍🏻
