I can’t believe TikTok bullied the girl at 2:00 until she deleted the video. It’s a complex harmony, some harmonies are MEANT to feel uncomfortable until the sweet release at the end, where “bomb locks in” is. It’s so satisfying because it was so uncomfortable before, god, it’s so good. It’s like a good jumpscare or bass drop, cmon!

I'm honestly sad fifty shades of swag got harassed just for singing in a dissonant harmony by using parallel fifths. I love parallel fifths, especially as a guitarist because all power chords are parallel fifths and sound perfect to me
@libsyates2426
@libsyates2426 2 жыл бұрын
@@aussiegaming9097 Yes! It's a power chord for a reason. The reason parallel fifth are considered bad is because it's too strong of a sound. Personally? I think a lot of these were far too boring for the already prominent dissonance in the original piece. On "you", the Eb in the backing track plus the B natural in the melody is a beautifully dissonant tritone. The whole point of this piece is to evoke emotion, and the original cover is honestly just too clean for me too feel much about it. 50shades brought a different level of dissonance and power to it, plain and simple. It's somewhat ridiculous that we still ascribe by these rules made up so long ago by a bunch of annoying white dudes, but I guess what happens happens. Not to mention, they didn't account for the expressive, candid nature of many modern songs. Some of those harmonies had parallel fifths in them that did sound kind of bad, and that was mostly because parallel fifths are best enjoyed without the third between them. Then, as a triad, it doesn't tend to sound as good imo. But still, all this to say that she did something very cool.
@georgepantzikis7988
@georgepantzikis7988 2 жыл бұрын
@@libsyates2426 The reason parallel fifths are considered bad is because it doesn't maintain line independence. The two voices move in too similar a way and instead of sounding like two voices begin to merge together. It technically works because all the intervals are consonant, but it sounds odd. The reason it works when other people use her harmony with a more subdued tone and volume is because they use it as a softer, background harmony where voice independence doesn't really matter. Dissonant harmony is very beautiful and can work when done right, but the problem with that girl's harmony wasn't the dissonance, it was that she was using parallel fifths while trying to make her line as strong as the main melody.

I dont think fifty shades of swag's dissonace was the problem. Her vowels were much brighter then sarahs, pushing the dissonace a little to far. I think it contributed to the note crunch on "lie with" honestly the harmony is really cool. Soften the vowels a bit and it would work wonderfully. 7:58 is a perfect example. Soften the vowels, blend a little more. And the harmony is beautiful.

I prefer the 50shades one because of the way the way it mixes with the other one it feels like the dissonance is actually taking over the original and less underlying, the reason why 50shades in my opinion is better is because neither one is overlaying the other. Instead they are both fighting for dominant track which works really well once you reach the "atom bomb" part. But mostly I think it's just that the other one is using a different and lower more sensual voice for more of an effect that just doesn't work with the harmonies she was using. But that's just my thoughts on it.

@@ihearttwice2462 I actually love 1:59 more than the other attempts people make to copy 50shadesofswag's harmony. I don't know what it is about hers specifically, but the harmony overpowering the melody gives the 2 notes an almost strongly vibrating clash, which at least in my ear feels better. I just wish she was louder in the beginning, because instead of it feeling like the 2 vocal lines diverge, it feels like she's making an late entrance. Edit: The best rendition of 50shadesofswag's harmony is 8:03, I particularly love the glissando

2:00 sounds great. It’s the vowel shape that’s taking away from it. The “ah” vs the “oh” or even “eh” shape that the video after the original sings. Same melody better vowels. Well I wouldn’t even say better, just more near what the original singers vowel shape is so it hehe locks better.

About 2:00 WE DID A MUSIC LESSON ON THIS DUET IM NOT EVEN KIDDING essentially, harmonies are heard at the 3rd, 5th or 7th, however, with the duet, it was being sung on the 3rd and the 4th, rather than the western interval of the 3rd and the 5th, therefore sounding dissonant. BUT in some cultures, the 3rd and 4th intervals being played/sung together are common!

2:00 (possibly 1:59 im unsure) is god-tier. The Cm (C, Eb, G, maybe another C) clashing with the E gives a tone that I can't find anywhere else, this one is truly good. TL;DR in replies in case you don't want to read a full essay As I said, the Cm clashes with the E. However, it's perfect in this case. The song is meant to feel foreign or unusual, which this semitonal dissonance does well. (unfortunately i didnt make a tl;dr because i was tired and it was maybe 10 pm at the time of writing)
