My back was in terrible pain until I finally realized that the way I was sleeping made things much worse for me. As a side sleeper, I also stretched my legs out in a way that was arching my back wrong. I had to learn to sleep with my legs pulled up more in order to round that area of the back. It was the one thing that finally solved the terrible pain and spasms I had in my lower back. Good detective skills, Bob. Thanks for the demo guys!!

In reality, when a spouse, or, person we live with has horrible pain, it can really disrupt the normal 'flow' inside the home. Same as a horrible toothache, etc. People become more aggressive, short-tempered, etc. No one wants to see anyone they love in pain, with no relief in sight. Thanks, y'all! ❤

I've been practicing to walk toe strike first. Not 100% of the time, but daily when I think of it. It not only helps my low back, but also my knees get relief. I'm also exercising my glutes. I've been doing this for about a month and I'm noticing that my pain is next to nothing, I can walk farther without pain, and bend over without pain. Thanks to these exercises and some others from B&B, I'm getting in much better shape! Thank you all! Including Rick! 😊❤️

I specialize in pain management and regularly encourage my patients to see physical therapist. At times they can not afford to or have had bad luck in the past so they are reluctant to try it again. I have used many of the stretches and exercises from this channel to creates packets to hand out and/or for demonstrating a physician directed home exercise plan. I’ve had many patients come back for follow ups and tell me how well the stretches and exercises help. I Always learn something new from this channel and encourage my patients to watch this channel. While sailing I noticed my back would often ache after a few days at sea. Not a lot of large movement on a sailboat, but there is a lot of being in one position and repeatedly adjusting for the boat's rocking and oscillating. I do two things. First if I'm just standing around I'll do more movement than anyone else aboard to counteract the boat's movement. It's not necessary but it gives me some movement, I enjoy doing it and it works to improve my balance. (On night watches -- when no one's looking I dance on the deck. Can't lift your feet though, because when they come down the deck is somewhere else.) The other thing I've learned to do: ( this would be a bare minimum to what you're advising.) Laying on the trampoline (catamaran), on a yoga mat, or in my bed onboard, I'll lay on my back and rotate my bent knees from side to side, making the motions as big as possible and extending my legs to increase the effort. I do 200 of these (using my fingers to count so I don't have to think about counting.) if I think about it I'll do some Superman's. After three weeks sailing in the Bahamas and not doing this, my back ached. After three months sailing in the Pacific - feel great. And this is bringing over 150 lbs of gear and spare parts through the airports, hotels to the boat and almost as much when I got back. I also took along and wore my weight lifter's belt that was recommended to me by a local orthopedic legend! over 30 years ago to use whenever I moved my photo gear.

I love you guys! Blessings to all. ❤ I'm going to start these as soon as I'm done commenting here. I've had a litany of neck/mid-back issues, which were then followed by the most-agonizimg piriformis pain. TG, after months of watching you, going to a PT clinic, those issues have 'mainly' resolved themselves. I continue my exercises at home. Having age-related osteo & fibro, I need to stay on top of it. That aside, the one issue that never leaves me is that gnawing lower lumbar/sacral pain. I've been over-extending the area to help relieve the discomfort. I've also managed to get these hams quite flexible over the past two years. Throughout my days, I'm constantly bending to stretch my back - at times, it's a painful pleasure. 😕 Needless to say, I had no idea that extending my back, as I constantly do, was a big no-no. I'm guilty of padding all the chairs/couches to extend my lumbar region. Ugh. K. New day, new stretches & exercises, although the walking changes might need to wait.😉 Thanks, guys. ❤❤❤

Thank you for sharing this! I have spinal osteoarthritis and always have lower back pain. I do yoga and stretches EVERY morning for at least 45 minutes. My daily routine includes a lot of the exercises that didn't work for Linda. I also do 2 of the stretches that helped her. The last X-rays didn't show overarched or slumped back so I'm a bit at a loss. No insurance means no going to a chiropractor so I'll just have to continue figuring out how to lessen the pain.

I've been wearing so-called barefoot shoes for several months. I've found that while my feet get tired more easily, my overall health seems to be better. I never had a whole lot of back pain (plenty of neck pain) but the little I had has improved. The shoes weren't the only change I made, though. I got them as part of my kettlebells and clubs program, in which working out barefoot or with such shoes is encouraged. I decided just to try wearing them all the time. Coincidentally, yesterday was the first time in several months that I wore "normal" shoes to an event, for social reasons.

Good one, guys. One of the biggest problems is finding the right stretch/manipulation when the conventional wisdom doesn't work for you. This was exactly me! Though I had a disc bulge at L5. I tried McKenzie, McGill and so much others rehab approaches with no luck. Still was in pain. It wasn’t until I started doing exercises that did the opposite of increasing the lumbar lordosis as stated in this video. I was avoiding flexion for years due to being afraid to cause damage to my disc, it is what McGill of course teaches. Well it was wrong for my pain. I purchased a Reverse Hyper Machine and began doing exercises that took me out of extension. Within a couple of weeks I began to feel better with less pain.

I have been doing all of these stretches inc walking up stairs on almost daily basis for at least a year with no improvement. I added only the glute pump, been doing it for about a week, took my walk this morning and did not have to stop to rest my lower back until almost 3\4 the way through my walk. And then it wasn't nearly as bad, I just didn't want to make it really flare back up before I got back home. I usually have to stop at least three times and stretch my lower back and hip and relieve the hot burn. I think I'm going to get rid of the burn permanently! And yes, enjoyed including Bob in the video, keep his input in there, he's the only one who can keep you in line Brad 😂😂😂 And Mike, you do a great job explaining these stretches..love you guys and thank you all so much! I can't wait to tell my chiropractor and massage therapist.

I've been struggling with with pain/discomfort in my lower back since my teenage years due to an over-arched back. Nothing too limiting in terms of physical activity, but very annoying. I tried all sorts of exercises and stretches for my hip flexors, glutes and abdominal with no effect. Then I saw a video by Athlean-X where he used the first stretch you showed as a test to reveal whether it was a hip flexor issue or a qadriceps issue. If I remember correctly, the test was to bend one leg and lower the other one bent as you show. If you can't touch the back of the thigh to the bed/table (without arching the back), try extending at the knee. If this allows you to get all the way down, the issue might be tight quadriceps muscles rather than hip flexors. Though I'm bad at sticking to the stretching routine (shame on me), my back issues have gotten better after I started targeting the quads.

Just wanted to say, sometimes you don't have a choice and surgery is the ONLY way! I have had 2 different sciatic nerve pain years, the first was a slipped L5. The second was arthritis on my L5 facet going down and rubbing on my S1. I had been to Physical Therapist to the point that they said we have no more tricks in out bag, the second time. Refered to Pain Management first time felt the lidocaine but nothing from the steroid injections. Second time, the Dr. hit arthritis while injecting me, but injected me again on that side. 3 days later I was in so much pain, I could not get to go away. They told me go to ER and get an MRI. Well I knew one of our hospitals here did Not do MRI'S from an ER visit. So I called the 2nd one and asked if they did MRIs through the ER? She told me if it was warranted. So I arranged to go there! They did a MRI with contrast and found the culprit! Refered me to a Neurosurgeon! I am not fond of neurosurgeons, my second son died at the hands of one! So I was more than apprehensive! It was a female and a different group. I flat out told her I had list my son to one of you, so I don't really want to be here, but you are my last option! She said she would be there no matter what! So I tried to reason her out of what she suggested which was fusion of L4, L5, and S1. She just told me "you'll be back!". So I agreed. This lady stuck to me, when my scare became infected on a Saturday and back into ER I went. They called her from her vacation! She told them what she needed them to do! And I got that open wound packed, and packed for 4 weeks. Finally, the wound was healed, but was still on antibiotics,(2 months worth)! But I am all better, bone is growing nicely! I will be fused completely on Feb. 15th I hope. It was a struggle, yes I was in pain after the surgery, when I was at home for the first couple of weeks. But there was NO pain down my leg! So, yes it was worth it, my lower back was full of arthritis, and she removed it all! And for that I will be forever grateful!!

@BobandBrad how can I do exercises to help with a severe lumbar lordosis when I have had a double knee replacement and can’t kneel? What exercises can you suggest to reduce pain from sciatica and from lumbar 4/5 partial herniation? Many thanks

3:18 Hello Brad, I had you as my PT in Caledonia after 2 knee replacements and beginning back pain. Currently I'm 64 with arthritis, scoliosis and degenerative back disease (lower back basically little cartilage left). What I'm wondering is what type of exercises you'd recommend for this and would any of your products be helpful 😢 If you get this, thanks!

With the hip flexor stretch, my PT said to avoid pulling my leg back by holding on to my knee. Instead, I’m supposed to pull my leg back by placing my hands on my thigh, just under my knee.

Another one that might work is a bit extreme: lay on the floor with butt pressed against the wall, legs running up the wall. Try to straighten the legs and press the lower back flat against the floor.

I just had my second back surgery in 4 years. All the PT in the world couldn’t help my stenosis. Remember those shoes that were called earth shoes? The soles were higher in the front than the back. I think a pair of these would have helped my condition since I felt better when my back was flexed. When I would go shopping I used a shopping cart even though I didn’t have that many items. Maybe I have too much arch.

Great information thanks. Have to laugh at various comments about age and "if only knew when younger," which is always relative. On that topic, how much evidence (anecdotal is fine!) that following this sort of advice, exercise and walking technique - which I was fascinated by, having decided to walk home from town today instead of catching bus. Took about 48 minutes, "regular" walking technique ... that following these types of recommendations *prevents* back pain and/or problems in later years? Thanks for video, and those sharing their experiences through the comments. Cheers from NZ.
