when Count Rogan hits Westley on the head, that was real, someone made a mistake and the sword hilt wasn't padded and it actually did knock him out and I think put him in the hospital for a couple of days

Not only could that knock on the head put Wesley out. It actually did knock Carey Elwes unconscious. What you saw was 100% real.

Actually when the 6-fingered man hit Westley on the head with the sword that was a REAL accidental hit that knocked actor Cary Elwes completely out and sent him to the hospital for several days!

Had the prop sword actually been real, it would have definitely knocked him out, if not fractured his skull. A rapier of that size is easily 1 1/2 lbs in weight. Also, if you look in historical fencing manuals, pommel strikes in close quarters were commonly used.

Here is something that does claim to be quoting Elwes, where he says he was knocked out. ----- Well, Guest did indeed tap him on the head, but a bit harder than he'd intended, resulting in the actor actually losing consciousness. Elwes explained: "Chris [Guest] swung the heavy sword down toward my head. However, as fate would have it, it landed just a touch harder than either of us anticipated. And that, folks, was the last thing I remember from that day's shoot. In the script Bill's [Goldman, who wrote both novel and screenplay] stage directions from the end of this scene state: 'The screen goes black. In the darkness, frightening sounds.' Which is precisely what happened." The actor continued: "I woke up in the emergency room, still in costume, to the frightening sound of stitches being sewn into my skull ... and of course Chris felt absolutely terrible about the whole thing, even though I kept telling him it wasn't his fault. It was my dumb idea. But you know what? That particular take was the one that ended up in the film. So when you see Westley fall to the ground and pass out, that's not acting. That's an overzealous actor actually losing consciousness." -----

As the father of an 8 year old daughter, yes, kids like to hear the same story, watch the same tv episode, same movie, over and over. My daughter has listen to "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" audio book every night for about a month now. It's comforting to little kids. Being young and having very little control over the world around them, it's a way for them to reduce anxiety.

"It's a fairy tale!" You were right! Or more accurately, it's an affectionate parody of the fairy tale genre -- it makes fun of all kinds of tropes and conventions, while also paying them due respect. That's why the movie is both goofy and charming, and one of my personal favourites. I think one example is the fact that Buttercup never fights, or does hardly anything to protect herself. She's playing the long-standing fairy tale trope of the 'damsel in distress'. It's silly at times, but it also makes sense -- after all, Buttercup has never learned how to use a sword or fight, and would you really want someone untrained to be swinging a weapon around?

I think if something is supposed to be cheesy then its not. It's just funny in an eccentric way. There are things that are supposed to be serious but are cheesy. Those things may be funny by accident. Here the humor is intentional.

You seem genuinely confused about why people love this movie. If you want to know, I'll take a crack at explaining. Most people find they appreciate a movie most when they are willing to meet it on its own terms, and you didn't do that. Perhaps it's a language barrier, but I have never heard Shakespeare described as "cheesy." Every story has a particular tone (or a blend), and it seems to me you are making a value judgment about the tone of this movie. That makes your experience very different. It's almost as if you are watching an entirely different movie. There's an agreement between storyteller and listener, which this movie makes very very obvious via the Grandfather/Grandson framing device. Grandfather pledges, "This is worth your time. If you give it a shot, you'll like it." In return, he asks Grandson to give it a good-faith chance to deliver on his promise, and to let him tell the story his way. That's their bargain. You don't understand the appeal of this movie because you are not holding up your end of the bargain. The Princess Bride is a comedic adventure story that pokes fun at fairy tales, and that's not a ridiculous thing to be. It's funny, and the story moves briskly along with characters doing fairy-tale adventure things and making witty quips. But it's not all breezy. It includes fairy-tale comedic adventure versions of real emotion, too. We sympathize with Inigo's loss and pain. When the Count runs away immediately after Inigo's grand confrontational speech, it's funny because it subverts expectations. Yet we do care about his revenge, and when he kills the Count with "I want my father back, you son of a bitch!" we feel catharsis. It's not the catharsis of a serious drama, but that doesn't make it cheesy. Clearly you had fun watching it your way, and there's nothing wrong with that, even if it's not what some viewers wanted from you. More people should recognize that whether they like something is separate from whether it's good or bad. Even though The Princess Bride isn't for you, other people cherish it because they enjoy a comedic adventure story poking fun at fairy tales, and this perfectly delivers exactly what it promised. I hope this is useful to you.

I remember occasionally watching this movie as a very young child only because it had Andre The Giant. Andre was a professional wrestler that stood anywhere from 7 feet and 7½ feet tall, and he weighed +500 pounds. He was a giant because he had a rare medical condition. Sadly his condition gave him a lot of grief, problems with this well-being, and it also killed him. He was my favorite whenever I watched wrestling and he will always be my favorite wrestler no matter what.

7:10 there’s something to that. I’m not as big as Andre the Giant but growing up, I was much bigger than my classmates. As a result, I learned that I should never be aggressive towards those smaller than me or I was the bully. Once a classmate took off his shoe and smacked me in the face with it. I tried to walk away and had to shove him slightly to get by. The adult who saw both incidents and jumped down my throat, screaming at me for give minutes at least about how I shouldn’t pick on people smaller than me - the other kid walked away with no consequences while I was dragged to my parents who were now expected to punish me (after they learned, from me, what had happened, I wasn’t punished any more thankfully, but the damage has been done). After that, all of my classmates realized I was a safe target because I wasn’t allowed to respond to them no matter what, so I was tortured until 8th grade when I completely lost my mind and nearly put a classmate in the hospital. After that, I was basically ignored (still had no friends, but everyone was scared I’d go crazy again if they picked on me). I say all of this to point out that it’s completely understandable for Fezzik to be scared of Vizzini. Especially given the Fezzik character fits the Hollywood trope that big guys are always dumb (I spent 5 years working as a literal rocket scientist and the rest of my career (23 years) building and testing jet engines, so I don’t think of myself as dumb and that trope really bugs me - when I walk into a room with people I don’t know, I seem to need to really step up and prove myself (unless I’m wearing a Georgia Tech shirt which does lend me credibility)). 13:01 my baby brother (I say baby but he’s 40 now), likes to try to shoulder his friends as a joke (he’s about 3 inches taller than me and aP90X expert, so is usually able to do so. However, I laugh when he does it to me because he forgets I don’t move easily and it looks like this scene.

This here is one of the single most wholesome comedies there are. Loveable, great written and acted characters, really dramatic stuff paired with silly scenes and that sugar sweet romantic love story - it shouldn't, but it does work perfectly. :) Love Inigo - and the actor playing Westley does the classic, dashing action movie hero from black and white movies soooo good. :D

IN CONTEXT: This is Based on a Children's book and Being Read to a child, so it's being performed as if for one... and done Amazingly! With the exception of the Acrobatics, the Fencing Scene was performed by Cary and Mandy themselves. four and a half months of training. Fissik was played by Andre the Giant (RIP), A hall of Legend Wrestler for the WWE. Miracle Max was played by Comedian Billy Crystal and his wife was Carol Kane.

Actually, with regards to Count Rugen hitting Wesley with the handle of his sword, Chris Guest was too forceful and really did knock Cary Elwes out. What you're seeing is real. They had to stop shooting and take him to the hospital.

Interesting point that a lot of people miss - Inigo coming back from the knife throw by Rugen; he doesn't pull through because of literary convenience (well, he does, but there's a proper reason for it) - note that before he gives the miracle pill to Wesley, he kisses it. He gets a dose of medicine to return someone back to life after being killed!

Andre the Giant was big. How big? Well, during a rehearsal of the scene on the castle wall where they give the pill to Wesley, Andre let a tremendous fart slip. In an interview Carey Elwes described as a huge, loud, low rumble that the sound recorder later confirmed went on for 18 seconds straight. When it finally stopped everyone was speechless until director Rob Reiner asked “Are…are you okay?” To which Andre replied “Better now, boss.”

Behold more Trivia for all of thee 🤔 🏰 William Goldman wrote the book in 1973 & pinned the screenplay based on the imagination of his childhood experiences & for his two little daughters who came up with the idea with the title. Cary Elwes was inspired to write a behind the scenes book for the 25th anniversary interviewing most of the casr & crew. For a long time no one was able to make the move & yes Arnie was going to play Fezzik originally but they couldn't afford him when it eventually got made. When Rob Reiner choose André the giant for the part he couldn't understand him while reading his lines , so he learned by recording his voice & playing it back until he got it right. Due to his size he couldn't travel with them in the van so sometimes used a ATV instead. Not satisfied with the food on set he drove & bought back his favourite dishes & shared it everybody , he liked to drink out of a 40 ounce cup with a mixture of liquor's a concoction he called the American. He grew up in the same village as Samuel Beckett who took him to school. During his final scene André had to be lowered on to the horse with a pulley. It was Cary's idea to dive headfirst into the swamp of fire because it wasn't heroic enough jumping in feet first , the trap door had to open at the exact time to avoid hitting his head. One of the actors got into trouble with his wife burning down the kennel , the crew had to bail him out so he could finish the fire swamp scene. The Rat that attacked them had a man in it. Over 500 actresses were auditioned for the role of Buttercup including Courtney Cox , Meg Ryan & Uma Thurman. Robin Wright came from Texas but her father's British so that's why she's so good at doing the accent. During her first scene her dress caught fire , Goldman was on set & panicked even know he wrote it into the script. Billy Crystal & Carol Kane made up a entire backstory for their characters . Billy wanted to look like a cross between grandma & Yankees manager Caasey Stengel. For 3 days straight he improvised 13th century jokes , Cary laughed so much they had to use a dummy as a stand in , most of the jokes were cut out not being family friendly. Billy made a film called My Giant loosely based on Andre. Cary Elwes broke his big toe while riding a ATV with André but tried to hide it from Rob Reiner who found out , so they had to use movie magic to cover up his limping between scenes. Rob Reiner once ran into a mob boss outside a restaurant that looked at him & said " you killed my father , prepare to die" & burst out laughing. Peter Falk as the grandpa thought he didn't look old enough at 60 & wanted to use prosthetics but changed his mind . The Score includes legendary guitarist Mark Knopfler who only agreed if Rob Reiner would reference his earlier Spoof Spinal Tap with a hat in the grandson room. The movie became successful because it blends so seamlessy several different genres that has a wide range of audiences with timeless themes of true love & friendship & it's a influence on pop culture with homages in orther films & TV shows. It also has a innovative non linear story that jumps back & forth in time. , & lastly because it's based on a beloved book with the writer involved. Watching you laugh at this story was a bit of a let down. This movie is a classic that many, even those that see it for the first time now, find it to be a fun time adventure. It has all the elements that do many newer films lack. It's also why so many are against a remake. Like the Neverending Story, there are some things that should not be touched. Can only hope making fun of these classics doesn't become a staple in your viewings of this films moving forward

Billy Crystal (Miracle Max) liked Andre the Giant so much that he and another writer wrote a movie for Billy and Andre to star in together. The movie was called "My Giant," but Andre passed away before they could make it. They did make the movie with another actor, but I don't remember it being a hit or well-remembered.

This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. here was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and The Labyrinth 1986. This is one of the movies with an epic soundtrack like Conan The Barbarian or Highlander which you should also see. one of my favorite quotes from this movie "“We are men of action, lies do not become us.”"

40:52 "The same story? Again? Like, why?" That's often how it is with little kids. I remember, when _I_ was a little kid, in my household, we read the same books over and over again. Dr. Seuss was very popular. In my teens, it changed. The first novel I read, all the way through, I have yet to have any interest in reading a second time. There's no point. I've read it. I enjoyed it. I know what it's about. It was good, and I don't think I've ever read a novel I would not recommend, but there's also no point in reading one of them a second time. But when you're a kid, your concepts about the world are just forming, and that includes concepts of language, so that bedtime story is often a story you've heard who even _knows_ how many times.

Yup, Cary asked the other actor to really hit him. He got hit with the hilt of the sword, knocked out, and had to go to the hospital. And in Hollywood, if you film a real injury, you keep it in the movie.

During filming at night with Buttercup it would get really cold outside, so Andre would put his giant hand on the top of her head to cover it to keep her warm in between takes. To get around locations while shooting they gave Andre an ATV type scooter that he could drive around as he knees and back were very hurt from his professional wrestling and his giantism. He would let cast and crew drive it around too, and one time he talked Cary Elwes (Wesley) into driving it around. Elwes ended up getting into an accident that broke his foot. One last Andre story. Right before the director said action on the scene at 33:48 as a way to amuse himself and the other actors Andre cut a very long and very loud fart. After about 30 seconds it finally stopped and the director asked Andre "Andre are you okay," Andre replied "I am now Boss."

I was 9 when this came out and it's still one of my favorite movies. I don't think I've meant a person who has seen it and didn't like it. It's so memorable. Prince Humperdinck was played b Chris Sarandon. He played a vampire in another great 80s movie called "Fright Night". I highly recommend it.

I think in the commentary or special features otherwise it said in the fire swamp set that Buttercup's dress catching fire accidental and Westley's response was the actor just automatically responding to put it out.

His Grandpa cares enough about his grandson, he reads to him when he's sick. Not a lot of people are giving of their time. It's a memory to share. I'm concerned you didn't understand it. Or appreciate the greatness of this film. My Mom read to me when I was little. That's why I read a lot even to this day. I guess you're one of the few that just wasn't impressed.

Mandy Patinkin actually lost his father to cancer prior to filming this movie, so he pretended he was fighting the cancer. So I think Christopher Guest was genuinely scared as they filmed that fight scene.

Huzzah!!! Vanessa 🎬 🍿 How are thee fair maiden 🏰 ✨ It's Storytelling at it's Best , a Rip Roaring & Delightful Adventure with gripping sword 🗡️play , that's perfectly casted with memorable characters that are endlessly quotable. It's understandable that your a bit puzzled by it's enduring appeal , you have to bear in mind alot of people grow up enjoying it with family & friends across the generations often on VHS & it captured the imagination so it has a special place in people's hearts. Your hilarious your expressions say it all. The Romantic lines between Westley & Buttercup can be very theatrical , it's a acting style you don't often see on screen anymore. The movie does walk a fine line between a silly spoof & a drama that does throw some viewers off. I do like that Westley a throwback to character's like Zorro , robin hood & Douglas Fairbanks from the golden age of Hollywood with that devil may care attitude. Apart from Cary Elwes , I'm glad you also recognised Walter Shaw as Vizzini , ' It's inconsevable 'he's just as brilliant in real life ( took time off for a lecture at Oxford) & tends to play mischievous characters that are full of life. He was very nervous on set about getting fired between takes because Rob Reiner's first choice was Danny Devitoe who he compared himself to. He was sacred of heights while Climbing the cliffs of insanity so André like a true friend took care of him. There's was enough great scenes that I'm glad you did enjoy like when Westley got pushed down the hill while confessing his love , he did have it coming , you probably would have given him a left hook . It would've been to risky to fall themselves so stuntmen did it , how did that blonde wig stay on , they deserved extra pay for that. Mandy Patinkin was particularly marvellous as spanard Indigo & made it all the more watchable , has anyone been more driven by revenge He had no experience with fencing like Cary so they both had to train for months , during a practice session Mandy told his master " I think he's going to kill me so all that I've learnt I'm throwing out to defend myself "the Duel between them was deeply researched & excruciatingly rehearsed to perfection right & left handed. Mandy did feel a deep connection to his character having lost his farther " I think that there was a part of me that thought if I get the man in black , my father will come back". He talked to his father's spirit while filming & found it very healing & he definitely had some of the best lines. What you said about the budget , it actually only cost $16 million & was a moderate success at the box office but became more popular on video. Some of the turrets on the castle were fake due to costs , Reiner wanted it to be more majestic. The cinematography & the beautiful landscapes were wonderful , some of it was filmed around the Peak District not far from where I grow up. The scene where Westley having the life sucked out of him by that diabolical machine was dark , I did recognise under that prosthetic make up of Albino , Mel Smith who had a popular comedy sketch show for years with Griff Rhys Jones , famous for their head to head. Thankfully they lighted the mood again with one of the funniest scenes with him jiggling his head half alive ha if only we had a wheelbarrow , that's no way for the hero to rescue the princess. André the giant pretending to be on fire was epic , with them being so superstitious back then , they'll believe anything. Westley's final confrontation with prince Hemperdinck wasn't what I was expecting , usually the hero crashes through the window & there's an amazing swordfight , who comes up with these savage lines , what a bluff & pointing that sword directly into the camera was breathtaking. I liked that the story was being told throughout by the granpa while bonding with his grandson , kissing is yucky at that age , Fred savage was one of the best child actors , the wonder years was one of my favourites. There's a extra scene that was cut out with him looking out the window & seeing our heroes on white horses waving. And they lived happily ever after Thanks Vanessa , it may not be your absolute favourite reaction , but I appreciate it anyway , hopefully you'll find all the Trivia behind the scenes interesting , as for your rosy cheeks your prettier for them. When you're a kid or teen this movie is sweeter. That nostalgia stays with you as an adult. In the fire swamp Buttercup didn't help Wesley because she isn't Latina, and it was the olden days when women supposedly were helpless.

Great Reaction..... Everyone comments about how "Over the Top" this movie is and how "Useless" Buttercup is.... Reminder, You are watching this from the Imagination of an 8 year old boy who is listening to a story....... The Grandfather is best known for his role "Columbo" a Detective TV movie series in the 1970's... The Grandson was the lead from the TV show "Wonder Years"...... Fesik is played by Professional Wrestler Andre the Giant, He Past Away to Young at Age 46..... The Cliff-Top Duel was practiced by Wesley & Indigo, through-out the filming and one of the last things filmed..... And is considered one of the best filmed duels in movie history, and all but the gymnastic flips is the actual actors..... When 6-Fingered Man hit Wesley on the Head, it was a real hit and put the actor for Wesley in the hospital.... The Director had to leave the set when Filming the Miracle Max scenes cause the Actor Billy Crystal kept making him laugh.... If you notice, when Indigo delivers the line "I want my Father Back...." the actor drops the spanish accent, one reason is he was channeling how he felt about loosing his Father to Cancer.....

In the book, instead of having a man reading a story to his uncle, the author, William Goldman, tells you that the story is from an older, classic, very long novel and that he's giving you a shorter version with just the good parts. He switches between telling bits of the story and talking about his days as a script writer in Hollywood. At some point, you figure out that he's kidding you and that there is no prior classic novel and also that his stories of working in Hollywood are made up.

Once Upon a Reaction, there's another movie that's kind of like this called "A Knight's Tale" it has lots of elements too, lots of comedy, lots of action etc. There's one scene where the good guy is doing to do a jostling contest -- that's where two guys go towards each other on horseback, holding a large weapon, and they are trying to knock the other guy off his horse -- and as he's coming in, the audience starts tapping their knees to the tune of "we will, we will rock you..." and then that song starts playing, it's silly and awesome lmao. (the movie takes place in the middle ages so obviously no one had heard "we will rock you" by Queen, but like I said, silly and awesome, lol.) 🙂 Oh yeah and there's a montage where the good guy is kicking all kinds of people's asses to move up in rank so he can fight the bad guy of the movie, and the song "taking care of business" is playing 🙂

This movie is an anti-fairytale. In most fairytales the Princess falls for a prince. In this movie the Prince is a villain and the Princess is falling for a Farm Boy instead.

Had the prop sword actually been real, it would have definitely knocked him out, if not fractured his skull. A rapier of that size is easily 1 1/2 lbs (680 grams) in weight. Also, if you look in historical fencing manuals, pommel strikes in close quarters were commonly used.

This is my favorite movie of all time, it has action, suspense, romance, and of course most of it is comedy....it has something for everybody 🙂And I loved your animated personality, and your great beauty 😍 The XO on my 1st submarine, his voice sounded exactly like the "inconceivable" guy, and we were always trying to trick him into saying that, lol. He was really good at submarine warfare, though, and was very popular, everybody liked him. (on a submarine everybody knows everybody else, only 120 people (100 enlisted, 20 officers.).) iirc he had a degree in physics from the US Naval Academy. All the officers on a submarine have to have a year of calculus and a year of physics using calculus, because the Navy trains them all to be Engineering Duty Officer, which is they guy in the back of the boat who has overall responsibility for the nuclear reactor. 🙂

What's up Vanessa!!! Yes this movie can be cheesy at times but that's what makes it so good. And to think Cary Elwes and Robin Wright could have played Robin Hood and Marian in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves 1991.
