Asbestos Fibro Sheeting compared to modern day Villaboard. What they look like and what they break like.
DO NOT break anything that you think could be Asbestos unless it is fully wet down by soaking overnight in a bucket of water. I am a licensed Asbestos Removalist, and have taken great care in preparing this sample. I am also wearing a protective face shield.
A side note:
Asbestos fibres do not enter your body through your skin.
They can enter through your eyes, ears, nose and mouth. All of these entry points lead to your stomach or lungs.
(Yes your ears drain into your throat and your eyes drain into your sinuses)

My understanding is that if you see the large dimples it just means you shouldn't waste your money testing, because it's definitely asbestos, but a lack of dimples is no guarantee that you're in the clear.
@Home-Wrecker

Yeah, they used a knurled roller to bond the fibre's together. That's the dimpled back. I have other asbestos free boards that are dimpled as well. Most of these have "manufactured without Asbestos" printed on the back. I'll find some and get a pic up.

Home Wrecker I had a piece tested recently that had no dimples and had a bit of a layered look. It came back positive for white asbestos and organic fibres. It was probably from the late 70s or early 80s when they were phasing asbestos out but still mixing in their existing stock at about six percent.

Great Video on fibro panels. One 3rd test is: because asbestos panels are more solid they have a ring to them when they are dropped onto solid concrete that modern day villaboard does not have. Make sure you can drop both to compare the sound.

Thanks heaps for uploading this video. We have both types of sheets in our old house we bought recently. We are careful and don’t take chances but you put my mind at ease as I accidentally mowed over an old sheet hidden in tall grass causing a cloud of dust yesterday. I held my breath and ran the hell out of there, threw my clothes out and had a long shower. Checked after watching your video and no dimples, and fibres were consistent with the new stuff. Again, thank you for uploading.

@chrisscibisz9231
@chrisscibisz9231 6 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that asbestos fibres can embed into the fabric of your clothes and you risk inhaling them later. Washing your clothes just spreads the fibres to other clothing. These fibres are microscopic. Professional asbestos removalists wear disposable suits, breathing filters and eye protection. I thought to myself, “Well, you screwed up already, don’t make things any worse” This was a mistake I’ll never make again.

They say that one exposure to one fiber can kill you, but it's a little like saying that a walk down the street on any given day can end with a ledge falling off a building or a car spinning out and killing you. Most of the people who get sick from asbestos were exposed to it for years. It was mishandled, but the flavored salt from microwave popcorn will likely kill you much faster from the same level of exposure.

@@tomgrant6563 ill spit straight facts at you bro its my job. We treat hardieflex as one of the safer types of asbestos. Has a VERY small amount, but still contains Asbestos so we treat it the same as any asbestos. You would pretty much have to crush up a line of hardieflex and snort it for it to hurt you. Super 6 roof sheets on the other hand, every step you take on them is a full footprint of fibres that come off with every step. Shit is SUPER dangerous. Always best to get an asbestos removalist in, just for peace of mind, and im only one man but we dont charge to come quote so you might find someone happy to come give you some advice. Hope that helps.

@savige2012
@savige2012 3 жыл бұрын
I like the video but this is very very un accurate and misleading. You have the right idea, but the amount of times we have had Villaboard come back from the lab positive is kind of becoming humerous. The company James Hardie, had no idea what to do with their left over stock when all the Asbestos building bans got introduced in Australia, they had MILLIONS of sheets that they would have been forced to send to landfill which would have cost an ungodly amount of money and most likely would have bankrupt the company, but they decided it would be a good idea to chuck a big green stamp on every sheet saying "ASBESTOS FREE" or "MANUFACTURED WITHOUT ASBESTOS". Send any of that to a lab and it will come back positive everytime. Also i know you had it dunked in water but asbestos doesnt hold water, so when you snapped it you went and released a bunch of fibres into the air while trying to tell us the dangers of asbestos. All in all, great video, just needs some proper facts.

I used this method and the boards I have break / split into layers. There's no golf ball dimples on the back - looks exactly like your non-asbestos sheet in this video. I got a sample anyway (because I'm paranoid) and sent it to the lab. It came back positive for White Chrysotile Asbestos. I'm not trying to be a stick in the mud, I'm just concerned now that looking for layers is not 100% the right thing to look for. Here's what it looked like kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3i8lGZ6jdyAf5I

Some miners use to mine in asbestos mines and some wouldn’t get asbestosis, you’re much more likely to get asbestosis if you smoke too. I wouldn’t be too worried if it a one time exposure. But you’d be greatly increasing your chances if you’re a non-smoker

Asbestos was probably not the cause, as Asbestos is generally non Flammable. It was mainly used as a bonding agent and thermal barrier to insulate and stop heat transfer. The only case I have heard of, was an electrical fire that started near friable asbestos. That's the loose asbestos that looks like coconut husk or hair and used to wrap pipes.
