Holy Communion is not just a member privilege the Catholic Church offers to Catholics. It is an expression of the pre-existing reality that the communicant believes the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Jesus. In this video, Fr. Mike thoroughly and passionately explains why the Church teaches that non-Catholics cannot receive Communion. Fr. Mike's hope is that through his explanation, you will see how the Church's teaching on this matter expresses its desire for all Christians to be one.

I’m going into RCIA at 16 from a Protestant family. My hunger for the Eucharist is what is keeping me strong during my moments of doubt in faith. Hunger for the Eucharist is a suffering that connects us with our Lord and yes it’s painful, but it is also an amazing pain to have.

I am currently going through RCIA and I walk up to the priest and receive a blessing. I never used to because I felt like I was not allowed to do this. But my friend who I went to Mass with at the start said “that’s okay to cross your arms and receive a blessing”. And I can’t express enough how beautiful that was. Some moments I truly felt as if I was not welcomed because I wasn’t catholic, but that friend made me feel extremely welcomed and comfortable to attend Mass. Now, going through RCIA, I have been improving my faith and love for Christ. And the first moment I will get to receive Him and not have to cross my arms, I know I will be in tears. Because it truly is The Body of Christ. And I know I will never be worthy to receive Him. God is so good 🙏🤍

This was a helpful explanation. My wife was Catholic and had a strong faith life. I am not Catholic but I, too, have a strong faith life. My wife died from cancer last year. I like to go to her church from time to time as it makes me feel closer to her. I know I can't take communion at her church but this helps me to understand why I can't be included. Thank you.

I wish this was the way it was explained to me. I'm a Catholic now but before I was a Catholic, I had a long discussion with a priest about what I believe, etc. and he told me, "Wow! You are even more Catholic than most of my parishioners." So I asked, "Then why can't I receive Holy Communion. I know what it is and I want it. I need it." I was told, "Because you aren't one of us." And you are right, Fr. Mike. I felt rejected, and unwanted and unloved. You have a great way of putting things - the way you put it was more like putting a hand out in welcome Not saying 'no' but saying 'not yet.'

That is a lie, your not a child of a Catholic, your the child of the most high. If you ask for Jesus in your life, where does it say in the bible because your not a catholic, I will reject you? You will spend an eternity trying to find it... Jesus' blood was shed for all, not for some. This sounds like the Jews hating the gentiles? What do you have to say about that... What did Jesus do for the gentiles while he was despised by his own people?. Did Jesus limit his love? So why would he limit his body and blood? The answer is he never will, if you believe in him no matter what church you are his blood and body is a gift as a result of your faith. So if what your saying is true is GOD condemning Christians outside of the universal church to hell? The all believe in Christ? So who has the right to revoke Christ from a person?...

My whole family is fully entering the Church today. I was baptised Catholic as an infant, but never had first communion or confirmation (Which I am getting today). My wife and step daughters are being baptised, communion, and confirmation as well. Our marriage is also being convalidated (after performing a civil ceremony 5 years ago today). So we had to go through the annulment process (but my wife qualified for the Pauline Provlidege due to her and her ex not being baptised), so that made the annulment process much easier. What I'm saying is this, it was a long journey (year and a half since we started RCIA), but it's been worth it. We went up for blessings every Sunday during communion, and our Priest was happy to do that for us. We never felt "unwelcomed", we just had more work to do. I understand WHY some non Catholic Christians have a problem with Communion and other Sacraments, but you have to open your hearts and understand the WHY. The CATHOLIC Church didn't make these rules, Jesus himself did. Just because Protestant denominations are lax on the rules God himself made, doesn't make them ok. If anything, it SHOULD make you question the holiness of your church and church leaders. We practised patience, and we trusted in God's Will. Which God has rewarded us for that. I am not perfected, I'm a sinner, but I dare not question God. When someone at a Catholic church tells you "Y pu need to do this or that, before you can receive communion," it's for your own good. It's not an elitist thing, it's to protect your own soul. It is sacralidge to receive the Eucharist unworthily. You are better off not receiving, than commiting a Mortal Sin by receiving. Trust in God, have faith in him, and he will guide you home. BTW, it's MUCH easier to be born into the Catholic faith than to join later in life, so I have learned that lesson. My 2 year old son (who is baptised ) will learn from my mistakes, he will make it all the way through confirmation the correct way.

It is very difficult to not be able to receive, but what gets me through IS going up for a blessing. I feel as if I am participating. My priest sees that I am very serious about becoming one with the faith and his blessing is welcoming. Where do you find all these rules in scripture ? You don't ,The roman catholic church wants your total devotion to it's organization and that is how they bend scriptures to say what they think it means. You can have communion as long as you are a born again christian and your confession should be to God, not some priest . Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Read Corinthians and see what a mockery of the Lord's supper was being perpetrated by various individuals in the church and why judgement came upon them. There is absolutely nothing you can do to merit God's favor and there is nothing you can do to clean up your life and that is why the Lord has done everything for you. 1 John 2:1,2 Hoping that you will read with your heart and eyes open as I know that the RCC has told so many that they are the one true church and anything else is heretical. Just read the scriptures as they are above the RCC.

Good move. Avoid the sola scriptura heretics. The Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Catholic and the Assyrian Church of the East are ancient, unlike the Reformation kooks that got it wrong with their one dimensional, regressive logic. Those ancient churches are the only ones that are bona fide Christians. Sola scriptura is man weakly interpreting the Bible for their own weak ideology.

As a Protestant, (looking to convert) I've visited many different churches. It's kind of crazy how they all have different rules when it comes to this. It's actually very confusing. Some, Communion is open to any and all. Others, you have to be baptized. Others, you have to be baptized in that particular church. Others, only adults can receive. It's so confusing.. The Catholic way actually makes so much more sense.

You need to be more carefully with your interpretation of "this is my body.". This exact phrase is used in other places in the New Testament, with the exact same Greek words, and it is NEVER taken as literal. Is Hagar literally Mt. Sinai in Galatians 4:25? The Catholic church is also preaching heresy when it includes "soul" in its interpretation when Jesus only said it was his body. You cannot partake of His divinity either, as you can't partake of his humanity. We SHARE in His humanity and we SHARE of the divine nature, but we don't literally eat them. To hat is heresy. And why would you take his words about his body and blood as literal when you don't take "will never die" as literal but only spiritual, through partaking of his flesh and blood. Do some research on the meaning of the Greek word "estin".

I think this is so important, as well as under what conditions can we receive Holy Communion. As Catholics, we can also experience this painful exclusion of not receiving the Body and Blood of Christ if we are in a state of mortal sin. So we too can feel this pain or "rejection", but for us Catholics it's much simpler - all we need to do is go to Confession with an open, honest and purposeful heart and after making a heartfelt Confession, we can once again receive the most Blessed Sacrament, the Eucharist. I think it's very important that Father pointed out that other Christians can't receive our Holy Communion because they aren't in communion/ unity with the Catholic Church. But I wonder, as Catholics, are we allowed to receive Holy Communion at Orthodox or Anglican services? Or rather not?

I appreciate this video. As a devout protestant, I always found it very insulting the Catholics thought that I could not take communion. In our tradition, all one Has to do to be part of Christ’s family is to receive Christ in your heart, and understand he is the propitiation for sins. There was no obligation to go through any ceremonies or anything else to eat with Jesus. Communion is the greatest gift Jesus gave us and yet through sin it has been a battle ground. This just reinforces that the Catholic church is perpetuating the divide as it only desires unity under its own terms. In other words that we all become practicing Catholics. In their eyes other traditions are null and void. What we need to remember is that Jesus is the host at the Eucharist and invites all who believe in him to come and receive spiritual refreshment. And this is regardless of whatever tradition we belong to. What we hear of here are man made rules based on power which puts barriers in the way of people's discipleship..

No one knows how Jesus ministers to us at that point and we should meet him in faith. The west has tried to intellectualise something that we can never understand and this is the cause of our division. Next summer I will be ordained as a Deacon at Lichfield which will start to see my vocation come to fruition.

@@SamScott99 Yes we have the Eucharist and our service is pretty well identical to yours apart from a few things in different places and wording of some of the prayers. When we looked at Eucharistic presidency as part of my training the thing we were told that makes it valid is not the prayer of consecration but the affirmation at the end when the congregation respond with the amen. It is then valid in their sight and the priest needs at least one other present to celebrate. the church is not protecting the faithful as you claim but still fighting the battles of the reformation. I am not a Catholic but do belong to the catholic church and note the difference. My beliefs are theologically sound about what happens during at communion and instead of fighting over it we should adopt the Orthodox view that we cannot possibly understand what Jesus does or how he meets us but he does. |t is something that happens through faith. We should be respecting each others tradition and not using it as a barrier to accepting Christ's invitation to his table. Our churches should reflect the ministry he showed us when he walked this earth as he did not turn anyone away. With respect, I believe the flaw in this explanation is that members of the Eastern Orthodox Churches, who are in schism with Rome, are permitted to receive communion within the Roman Catholic Church, whereas Anglicans, who have a similar belief in the real presence of Christ within the Eucharist, the differences with Rome being largely sematic, cannot do so. It seems like the exclusion is, in this case, political and historic rather than spiritual - the 'middle brother' is being favoured to the exclusion of the 'younger brother'.

I believe that Jesus wants everyone to be able to take communion. It is not just for Catholics. At the last super Jesus said to take the bread, his body and the wine, his blood in rememberance of him. And I still don't understand why you can't take communion at a Catholic church if you are familiar with it at your own church. When I was 12 I went to a Catholic church with my friend and they made me get out of line. It was embarrassing and made me feel like I wasn't good enough . At my church in Arizona, a Christian Church they never denied anyone communion because they weren't with the church or of their faith, they were always very welcoming. Not only did they pull out of line but they were very rude and acted stunned that I was in line for communion and I was not a Catholic. Since then I am afraid to even go to a Catholic church because It did feel very unwelcoming and I don't like feeling judged because of my faith. I've had thoughts of converting since I found out alot of my family is actually Catholic and not Christian, baptist. but I still don't understand why Catholics pray to saints and Mary because in the Bible it says to pray to God and to Jesus Christ. I'd like to attend Catholic church and learn but like I said Im afraid I'd feel unwelcomed because of my faith.

I know this was written 11 months ago but I felt compelled to reply. I am so sorry to hear that you were pulled out of line and made to feel as though you were not worthy. That can be very traumatic and I understand why you have reluctance to attend a Catholic mass now. Referring back to what Fr. Mike said, the reason non-Catholics can’t receive communion is because it is a profession that you believe that the wine and bread you are receiving is literally the blood and body of Jesus Christ. Not a symbol, but his actual flesh and blood as described in the Bible. To take of this communion without fully understanding what you are taking a part in is a grave sin and a danger to your soul. I’m so sorry that you had a negative experience but I encourage you, if your heart so tells you, to try attending Mass again and go up during communion for a blessing. Simply follow the line and when you get to the priest cross your arms over your chest and the priest will lay his hand on your head and give you a blessing. If your heart is still pulling you towards the Catholic faith, speak the person in charge of the church’s RCIA program. Going through the RCIA process will teach you everything about the Catholic Church - particularly how everything that we practice comes directly from the Bible and Jesus’ commandments. As far as your questions regarding the saints and Mary, RCIA will answer your questions more in depth. But for a quick run down, we don’t pray to the saints or to Mary. We ask them for their intercession. Think of it like when you are in need of prayers and you asks your friend to say an extra prayer for you. It’s basically the same thing. I hope this helped to answer some of your questions. God bless you and be with you.

I asked “do I receive communion at mass or no?” She said “no. You ARE welcome at mass. You ARE welcome to come up to receive a blessing. You ARE welcome to reach out to us to be initiated.” I felt great about that because I don’t know much about how to live a catholic life, I just know this sins and much of the word in the Bible. So I appreciated the straightforward response. It’s humbling that I have further to go to be initiated and allow my journey to unfold properly.

I WAS A CATHOLIC ONCE AND I NEVER FULLY UNDERSTOOD MANY THINGS. WHEN I BECAME A PROTESTANT , I STARTED READING AND STUDYING (REPEAT, STUDYING) THE BIBLE. IT WAS ALSO THE TIME WHEN LEARNED WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. I LEARNED THAT ON THIS EARTH, THERE IS GOD'S LAWS AND MAN'S LAWS. CATHOLICS' BELIEFS, RULES, PROCEDURES, ETC. ARE MOSTLY MAN-MADE. MOST OF WHAT THEY WANT CATHOLICS TO BELIEVE ARE NOT BIBLICAL. (I KNOW THAT WHEN I TALK TO A PRIEST, HE WILL HAVE ANSWERS FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS I ASK BUT IF HE CANNOT BACK UP HIS ANSWERS WITH SCRIPTURES, THOSE ARE NOT BIBLICAL AND THEREFORE ARE NOT OF GOD). CATHOLIC CHURCH MAKES IT HARD FOR CATHOLICS TO ATTAIN SALVATION, WHICH MUST BE EVERY CHRISTIAN'S GOAL. IN THIS TOPIC FOR EXAMPLE, THE CATHOLIC CHURCH WILL GIVE COMMUNION EXCLUSIVELY ONLY TO CATHOLICS. WHEN WE DIE AND FACE JESUS, WOULD OUR LORD ASK IF WE WERE CATHOLICS WHO HAVE HAD COMMUNION OR WILL IT BE ENOUGH FOR HIM TO KNOW THAT WE BELIEVED IN HIM, HAVE CONFESSED OUR FAITH IN HIM AND ASKED FOR HIS FORGIVENESS FOR ALL OF OUR SINS? WITH CATHOLICS, AFTER DOING GOOD WORKS HERE ON EARTH, HAVING CONFESSED THEIR SINS AND RECEIVING COMMUNION, AND IN DEATH RECEIVED THE LAST RITE, CATHOLICS STILL BELIEVE THAT THAT'S NOT ENOUGH FOR ONE TO GO TO HEAVEN BECAUSE HIS SOUL WILL STILL HAVE TO BE PURGED OF SINS IN PURGATORY?! (PURGATORY IS NOT SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED IN THE BIBLE) THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ALSO BELIEVES THAT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH WAS THE FIRST CHURCH IN THE WORLD AND THE ONLY TRUE CHURCH. ALTHOUGH THE BIBLE MENTIONS CHURCH, IT DOESN'T SPECIFY "CATHOLIC CHURCH"!! I WISH CATHOLICS WILL NOT ONLY READ THE BIBLE BUT STUDY THE SCRIPTURES TO HAVE A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF WHO OUR GOD IS AND WHAT HE WANTS HIS PEOPLE TO BELIEVE.

Hello all. As a born and raised Catholic, I have taken interest in this topic because it can be a tough concept to talk about with authority. When people ask me why the stance is what it is, I simply tell them that "this is what the Catholic church has determined." I understand that many like to contend that there is indisputable Word that this is the "law" but I have not found it. In Corinthians 1 we read about St Paul condemning the church for their behaviors (and many will say this is the evidence of our belief) however, you will read there was much much more going on here in the early church besides a congregation uniformly shuffling to the altar for a chance to partake in the Host. There were factions, actual meals being eaten, (and people getting drunk!).. In all the shuffle, I take from this that Paul is lamenting the lack of the regard show by the church receiving communion. It's like the church was getting so disorganized with it. "Therefore brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, welcome one another. If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you gather you will not come under judgement." - 1 Corinthians 11 : 33-34. It's almost as if Paul is instructing the church "come to church satiated, so that you're not blindly and 'hangrily' disrupting and causing judgement." I respect the church to make practices as it sees fit, in order to have structure. I also think the church should be rooted in the Word because that is the only thing that can withstand. When I ask so many people, they don't really have a solid answer for this topic, they just say " well, it's the actual body of Christ... or, It's the Holy Lord why wouldn't you be respectful of it?" I think these a good ethics to have, but it doesn't answer the question of why we are excluding members of our church. At the end of the day I think this is a conclusion the church has made, and I completely accept that. However we aren't doing anyone favors by withholding that fact. I think this is a decision made on the inferences of those who had the information at the time. All the apostles broke bread with Jesus, ate his body and drank his blood at the Last Supper.. but wasn't Judas already beholden to the Pharisees in his anticipation of betraying Jesus? How could he have eaten the body of Christ (knowingly to Jesus!) of the sin he was about to commit for an agreed upon place and amount? How could Judas have been in a state worthy to receive Jesus after he had already agreed to betray him?

I’ve attended Catholic Church with my husband for 14 years. We moved recently and we’ve been at our new church for 2 years. I’ve taught Bible study and edge ministry along with my husband. I attended Catholic Church as a child with my neighbors, I profess my faith as Catholic, understand and know the catechism, and was even told by our priest, just 4 weeks ago, during a conversation at Bible study, that I have a much stronger faith and understanding than most people in our church. Last week, he found out I never received “first communion” as a child and haven’t attended RCIA as an adult. He withheld the Eucharist from me this past Sunday when I walked up to receive. I was devastated. The depression and anxiety and extreme pain that this has caused in my life feels unrepairable. You may want to find a way to protect your wife from this happening to her. 🙏🙏🙏

I am an international student in a new country with a completely different culture and religion. I visited a cathedral today and did not walk away during ongoing rituals and prayers out of respect. And in the end, everyone lined up to receive communion and I stayed in the line out of respect. The priest offered me communion and I did not know what to do and I was so scared. The priest said 'Don't walk away' and I started to panic the priest asked me what religion I practised and I mentioned my religion and apologised. I was asked to return communion in my hand. I walked towards the exit with a lot of shame and embarrassment thinking I had done something very wrong questioning my whole existence background. I am so sorry.

You shouldn’t feel shamed, it’s just the Priests are responsible to only give the Holy Eucharist to those who can accept Jesus Christs Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity worthily. He’s saving you from getting a sentence against yourself. Jesus said He’s the living bread, the bread He gives is His FLESH, unless we eat His Flesh & drink His Blood, WE WILL HAVE NO LIFE IN US.If we eat & drink of Him He will raise us up on the last day. If we eat & drink of Him UNWORTHILY, WE WILL BE LIABLE & BRING A SENTENCE AGAINST OURSELVES FOR NOT DISCERNING IT TO BE THE BODY & BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST, OUR GOD & SAVIOR. Jn6:51-59, 1Cor11:23-29 Unworthily, is if you have mortal sins, if you haven’t made your First Communion or you’re not Catholic! You can receive a blessing if you cross your arms over your chest. Yes I definitely experienced the feeling of rejection. I went to my first Catholic mass recently and didn't know the guidelines with communion. I was baptized Greek Orthodox and at all other churches I have attended I was able to receive communion. As everyone went up to receive communion at the Catholic Mass, I was the only one in the pews...so I assumed it was what we all did. As I got to the front I received the wafer, and after approaching the wine they person told me that I cannot receive communion if I am not Catholic. It left me with a very unsettling feeling, then after mass the father told me that I should reach out to him to learn about communion in the Catholic Church. It felt closed off compared to other churches I have been to, and that was the only aspect of the mass that made me question if I want to approach Catholicism further. I feel being all inclusive for others to receive Jesus is important, if anyone can give me more insight on this it would be very appreciated. God bless :)

It wasn't until two years later during RCIA the priest whom I knew very well by that point looked at me and said "What are you doing here?" Come to find out I wasn't supposed to be taking communion that whole time - he told me not to worry about it, I wasn't the first person to slip through the cracks with good intentions, but he told me from now on it has another special meaning, I get to enjoy communion not just with the Lord but also with the entire Catholic Church family. A person who believes, like myself, can't receive the elements because I'm Anglican. But a person who doesn't believe in the real presence can take it because they are a member of the RC Church . It seems that membership is more important than believing.

I can see where you're coming from. But consider someone who will not follow through with getting married, but is fine with sharing sexual intimacy, living together, etc. but does not want to make the vow or commit. Our God is a jealous God, in that He tolerates no rivals, much like within a marriage, there can/should be no other rivals. Someone who will not commit, regardless of however they feel/believe, is not giving their full selves to God (or to whomever within the example). Someone who is Catholic, but in a state of mortal sin, cannot receive the Eucharist either. Because it's akin to cheating on your spouse and then wanting to make love. Sin, mortal sin, has wounded the relationship. The individual needs to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and mend that relationship before attempting to partake in Communion. I hope that helps! There are other videos on this channel that addresses the issues I mentioned. The videos on being denied Communion are a great resource/tool for understanding better our stance on this.

@@phillipkuhlman7468 yea. Confession smh another issue I had with the church. Jesus said “I am the only mediator between man and God” and yet when I was raised in the Catholic church i was raised I needed to go to a man, call him FATHER, and say “forgive me father for I have sinned” and then a MAN told me I’m forgiven and go pray X number of HAIL MARYS” Like what?! 1. Jesus said verbatim, do not call any man your father, for you only have 1 father and he is in heaven. 2. This creates this idea in Catholics that we see all around, where they look at confession like a grace store. Stop by, grab some grace and go. It creates this sense (and I’m not saying all Catholics feel this way but some definitely do) where they can sin willfully cuz they can just go to confession and be forgiven. 3. Even if that was the case. Being told a penance, to go pray Hail Marys and our fathers is crazy. It takes away from the power of the cross and places salvation in my hands. I have to do x y and z to be forgiven. That’s not the Gospel AND EVEN if we needed to pray after confessing, why in the world would Mary be the one I pray too. But then again the holy rosary is like 50 Hail Marys and only 10 our fathers. So we can easily see how highly regarded Mary is. A human woman. They even believe Mary was sinless and died sinless which would make the book of Romans flawed because it says “no one is good, no not one” If you gave the holy Bible to a child on a dessert island, left him there alone for 20 years, and came back for him later. How much do you wanna get he would not go to a Catholic Church. From only reading scripture, alone, I feel like I can bet my paycheck he wouldn’t come off that island looking for a Catholic Church b

Hi. What will you do when the Catholic church contradicts the Bible? The Apostle Paul says that whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord will be saved. Jesus said, "Ask, and you shall receive." Salvation is that easy. If we continue in His Word, then we are His disciples. Moreover, Jesus said that the Holy Spirit (not the 'church') will lead us into all truth. Do you know Him? If you do not know God, if you are not born again, baptized in the Holy Spirit, if He is not your Friend, Teacher, and Guide, then Jesus will say to you, "Depart from Me; I never knew you." Do you know Christ? Or do you have to pray to Mary to get Him to hear you? That said, how can Mary hear a million prayers at once - unless she were God? It is a sin to pray to Mary! She is simply a sister in Christ, a sister who had other kids and is no longer a virgin! I urge you to return to the simplicity of the Bible. Jesus said, "This is eternal life, that you know God and Jesus Christ Whom He has sent (John 17.3)" Anything different means you have a different gospel. As Paul wrote, "Whoever preaches a different gospel, let him be accursed." I hope that you will follow the Bible and not the apostate Catholic church. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

I am still confused by this. I have been received into the body of Christ, and I do believe fully that communion is the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ. I have been baptized by both water and the Holy Spirit. Are you saying that only Catholics have been received into the body of Christ? The division among Christians is a painful thing. I don’t understand it. I was raised Catholic, my parents changed churches and then I had an Episcopal Confirmation, I partook in communion at both. It wasn’t until last year, however, that I truly found Jesus and entered into a personal relationship with the Lord. I now go to a (very mildly) Pentecostal Church and we often share services with the Baptist Church in the next over. I have been to many different churches belonging to many different denominations - and I have been witness to a few churches where the truth of God’s word was not truly preached or where there were add one - but all truly Christ centered churches seem to agree on everything. Except for one: their denomination is the only correct one. This really saddens me. Personally, I don’t want to belong to a denomination. I don’t want to say that I follow “Apollos” or I follow “Paul”. I simply want to say I follow Jesus.

Thank you, Fr. Mike. I am an Episcopal priest, and in our church the controversy is around communion before Baptism. Although our teaching is that our communion is open to any baptized Christian, many clergy openly flout this in practice, offering communion to anyone who wants it, and even including rubrics to that effect in Sunday bulletins. I have taken some heat from my parish because I removed that message from the bulletin when I arrived here, and have gotten only half-hearted support from our bishop. I really appreciate your analogy of Eucharist before Baptism to sex before marriage, although I fear that many to whom I speak would not see a problem with pre-marital sex, either. Our church is in a tourist destination, and I am frequently asked by visitors if Catholics may receive communion in our church. I tell them that while the Episcopal Church is happy to welcome them to God's table, they really need to speak with their own priest about receiving in a church that is not in full communion with Rome. One of my favorite examples: Just before Mass, as the processional hymn was starting, an older lady slipped in the back door and approached me. "I'm Catholic. What's your theology of the Eucharist?" she asked. I responded, "True presence." She said, "Good enough," and sat down in the pew. BTW, and in contrast to all that, when I am on retreat at a Roman Catholic monastery, I usually take communion, but only after considerable discernment and conversation with a Jesuit spiritual advisor. I accept the warning of eating and drinking judgement to oneself, and if I had to rely on my own merits I could never partake worthily; however, I approach the altar with the Prayer of Humble Access, throwing myself on God's grace to unite me with Christ.

We read about 33 churches in the NT but all were overseen by the Apostles and those whom they ordained by laying on of hands in holy ordination. There was no division...no “denominations”. Apostles then had successors but all have a direct line of succession. Only these can pray the prayers of consecration for the bread and wine. I’m just wondering how your church handles the purely Scriptural basis?

Hi. I hope that I am not getting too personal, but are you saved? Jesus said, "Ask and you shall receive." Salvation is just that simple. Jesus also said, "This is eternal life, that you know God and Jesus Christ Whom He has sent." Do you know Him or will He say to you, "Depart from me; I never knew you"? I encourage you to read your New Testament. When doing so, you will have to make a choice: to choose to obey God or obey the Catholic church. You cannot do both! That said, the Catholics say that they will help you interpret the Bible, but, in reality, they contradict it. For example, you were denied communion, but Jesus commanded us to keep communion. Which will you follow: the words of Christ or Catholic doctrine? As you read the New Testament, you have a countless number of such dilemmas. I hope you will choose to follow Christ and not the apostate Catholic church! The Apostle Paul says that whoever preaches a different gospel, let him be accursed. Hence, I simply read and obey what Paul wrote. This puts the Catholics in a precarious position: if I simply obey Paul, I do not need the doctrines of the Catholics; yet, if I need a different doctrine, Paul says I should be accursed! I hope that you will have a personal encounter with Christ! I met Christ in 1977 and I can honestly say that I have not had one second of doubt that I know the Lord and am bound for heaven - not even for a second! You can have the assurance of salvation too! Concerning salvation, Jesus said, "Ask, and you shall receive!" Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

@@kenshiloh Paul also said in 1 Corinthians: “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” It is important to examine yourself and truly repent of your sins before doing something as important as receiving Christ in the most powerful and intimate sacrament of the Eucharist; it isn't about denying Christ, or else I wouldn't put so much care and attention into receiving Him! As for my relationship with Jesus, I don't think it could be any better. He is my light and my guide and I don't know what I would do without Him. As a matter of fact, I do not even remember the last time I did not receive the Eucharist at church. One more thing: I want to sincerely thank you for the way you structured your comment; while you did criticize me, it was in a perfectly just and loving manner, rather than condemning me, accusing me of not being a true believer, or something like that. I'm very glad to get to peacefully talk to a brother in Christ. God bless you, my friend!

@@j.m.turner1756 Wow! Thank you for your kind note. Concerning partaking of communion in an unworthy manner, may I ask, what is your assurance of salvation? For example, Jesus said, "Not everyone who says, "Lord, Lord" will enter heaven." How do you know that you are not one of those people who will not enter? Moreover, the Apostle Paul says that he does not judge himself (I Cor. 4.3). So, if not everyone who claims Christ is saved and we cannot judge ourselves, how can we know? As it is written, "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." There is no 'guess, hope, wonder if...' in the gospel! Here is what Christ says on the matter, "Whoever believes in Me will have rivers of living water bubbling inside unto eternal life." Do you have that? Does the Holy Spirit bear witness with your spirit that you are a child of God (Romans 8.16)? Is it the Holy Spirit (or the 'church') that leads you into all truth (John 16)? The bottom line is that I am really ok if you reject Sola Scriptura. That said, my question is, what do you do when the Catholic church blantantly contradicts Scripture? Are you suggesting I go with the church or with what is written in the Bible? If your church 'interprets' the Bible, then do you agree it will not contradict the plain teaching of Scripture? God is not the author of confusion! With the aid of the Holy Spirit, we can understand the Bible! I do not need your priests and scholars to lead me into ultimate truth; in fact, Jesus said to call no man teacher, as the Holy Spirit is my teacher and guide! Are you asking me to disobey my Lord? By the grace of God, that ain't happening! Again, it is the unwinnable (therefore unanswered) question that I have posed to many Catholics: I follow Paul's gospel. Do I need to do something different? If no, then why do I need you church? If yes, then Paul says you are preaching a different gospel and I should consider you accursed. What answers have Catholics given me? Most of the time, the question is ignored, followed by, "Will you doubt those who gave you the canon"? To which, I reply, "I don't know. How can I get in touch with them? Rumor has it they died about 1,600 years ago! If you have a moment, will you answer my question?" One Catholic dismissed the question with, "That has already been answered. Here's the link"! It is unanswerable, leaving you, a Catholic, in the uneviable position of contradicting the Word of God! Time to get right with the Almighty! Time is running out for you. That said, I appreciate the sentiment of calling me 'brother,' yet, if you are preaching a different gospel, I cannot say that we have a kinship spirit! In fact, the Bible says to test the spirits to see if they are of God. Do I need a different gospel than what Paul preached? If that is your position, I cannot, in a sense of faith, call you a brother! Instead, I call you to repent and believe THE gospel! I hope that you can sense my tone of love and concern. I hope that, if you do not know Christ, you He will fill you with that river of living water! Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

I came across this video quite by accident but I am very glad I did. I had a close friend that had lost her father, who she regularly attended mass with. She asked me to go with her to mass so she wouldn't have to go alone. I regularly attended a baptist church at the time. I said yes because I knew it was important to her and I was also curious about the Catholic faith. It was quite a negative experience for multiple reasons. It was very different from what I was used to and nothing was really explained. I felt very isolated and unwelcome. I never went back. I wish I had seen this video prior to going and perhaps the experience would have been much better.

Fr Mike, I love your videos and your explanations. Thank you for all you do to explain Catholic teaching. Here is my question. I love the Lord with all my heart and in my home country attend a Baptist church although I feel comfortable in many Bible believing churches. Each year when I go to Greece, I attend a Catholic Church as it is much more accessible than the Orthodox which is in Ancient Greek and goes on and on for hours. The Catholic priest has given me an order of service in Greek and English, the prayers are beautiful and I love the hymns. When I go up for communion I say to my Lord Jesus, I am doing this as you asked us to, in remembrance of your amazing sacrifice on the cross. Thank you for dying for me. If I'm wrong, and this is really your body and blood, please forgive me. There are Catholics in the congregation who I've heard come out of church and say in later conversation, Jesus is just one way to God and there are some to whom He doesn't seem important at all. Why is it ok for them to partake of the Mass, but not for me?

Father, thanks so much for this video. I think it is one of the best videos Ascension Press has put out because there is so much misunderstanding on this subject, not only by non-Catholics, but even Catholics who don't know their faith that well. I work at a parish as their faith formation director. I use this video as a resource for those who want to enter the RICA (OCIA) to help them understand that the non-reception of Holy Communion is not about being unwelcoming, but because of everything you teach here.

The sin I have committed in the past that I have gone to confession for and no longer do... I never wanted to tell anybody that they could not take communion when I invited them to mass with me so I would just tell them "go up there put your hands like this and say Amen"... I still feel really bad about this, it's not an excuse but I was young when I committed this sin and did not necessarily know how bad of a thing it was that I was doing .....now I do ....and no longer do this but father Mike is right it is so hard to tell somebody that they cannot receive Jesus in the Eucharist Also God bless you father Mike I really love all of your videos and this one was especially important to me

I don’t under how letting someone receive Jesus is a sin. Why should you have to work to get Jesus? That’s not how it was. Jesus broke the bread and drank the wine and didn’t say to some of them “you can’t eat my body and blood because you don’t fit the criteria”. That whole thing is bizarre!

Okay. So the analogy with sex works, but it doesn't explain. It just doesn't. The same thing can say protestants or apostolic. They can give the same analogy, and say, "Only we can." I received Communion from Armenian Apostolic Church, which is the world's first official church, and Armenia is the first country to officially adopt Christianity. How can you say we cannot receive Communion? You speak that we are divided, and you are dividing us even more. I was enjoying this channel until here. I would love to see Bible references or anything that proves this idea. Otherwise, it sounds very snobbish to me.

I would suggest you read your own Armenian Apostolic Church's history of where in its early days would not allow the unbaptized, Catechumens and the unrepented left the church only to come back inside after communion. I make an announcement at Communion time when I know large numbers of visitors are present that says exactly this. Let’s all pray for that unity. I have received thanks from visitors for this sacred context. Moreover, our RCIA usually numbers in the 20’s-30’s. Main reason? To receive our Lord in Communion, it is what convinces folks of the truth of the faith too.
