When You Don’t Understand the Bible

Have you ever read the Bible and thought to yourself, “wait… what?”
Oftentimes in Christian media we see what Fr. Mike dubs a “Hallmark” version of following Christ. There’s struggle and hardship, but then God’s grace comes in and cures everything, making everything nearly perfect for the characters in the story. While these types of stories make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, they’re not very realistic. And while God’s grace is essential, it’s not a magic wand that makes everything bad go away.
There are some stories in the Bible that at first glance appear dark, difficult, or just don’t make sense. Even some of the things Christ says to his followers can sound harsh or even scandalous at times. But it’s in these moments of confusion and concern that God wants to teach us something.
This was something that St. Augustine struggled with before his conversion. It wasn’t until after he had accepted the faith and began to intentionally practice it that he realized it’s not God’s word that’s wrong, it's our interpretation of it. He gives us 7 things to do when trying to understand a passage we’re unsure of:
1. Read the text in the original language. Or, if you’re not a scholar of Greek or Latin (more than likely), at least realize that a lot can be lost in translation, like idioms and turns of phrase, or context and foreign references.
2. Try different biblical translations and see how they compare.
3. Weigh what you’re reading with all of scripture (it’s ALL connected!)
4. Be humble and accept that you don’t know everything needed to fully understand God’s word (and that’s okay).
5. Sacred tradition always trumps our own interpretations.
6. Don't take figurative language literally.
7. Don’t universalize a parable to be relevant for all situations in life.
The Bible wasn’t written by Hallmark. It was inspired by God. Hallmark is meant to help you escape reality. The Bible is meant to help you get back in touch with reality. There’s going to be brokenness, and sin, and unhappy endings, but there will also be real grace that transforms those hardships into strength, and it has the power to change your life.

Thanks for sharing, Recently I had a respark to my spiritual faith with Jesus. I had a long falling out with conflictions of the Churches Teaching and my sexuality. I decided that I should leave the church. After a long and dark time in my life, I reached out to Jesus and retook him in my heart. Im on a path of repentance, and prayer as I sacrifice my deep personal feelings of same sex attraction and offer that up to the Lord. I picked up my cross and walking in his steps. This has been the feeling I have been looking for. I vowed to live a life of chastity and love. I missed Jesus and Im back in full force. I ordered the Great Adventure Bible and plan on taking the 365 day journey in walking with Jesus and his works. Hes coming soon and for the first time in a long time, I am ready for him.

@@valerietucker7340 It took years of thinking about this. I originally reached out to my spiritual director and asked for advice. I was told if I really wabted to stay in good graces and partake in communion with the Lord, I had to chose him or me. I was ready and honestly, I was happy eith that advice. Thats what originally killed my fire and I left shortly after. I was caught up in my selfish thoughts and put myself first. It was after a life changing event that I realized I needed Jesus, I made the wrong decision and I needed to fix that. I retook Jesus in my heart and asked for his love and grace to fill me and forgive me for making that decision. In return I offered up what I greatly desired, a relationship and a life long partner, to him and said I promise to sacrifice this and live my life to your will. From that moment on, what I thought would make me sad and unhappy, actually gave me peace and reunited me with the Lord. Recently I got the urge to share my story, to help others like me, chose salvation and tell them that there is happiness in Christ and that the void we are all looking for, will be filled. If I could go back in tome and fix my decision I would habds down tell myself to chose God.

LISTEN, the book of JOB shook me to my core! I was traumatised for months. Especially the part where Satan torments one of Job's friends. I was like ummm, is this supposed to be in the Holy Book? Once I reflected on it, it was life-changing though! Thank you for these lovely tips Father Mike. 🙂

I watched a Christian show called "Superbook" about Job and it was awesome and dang, he resisted every temptations the devil had to throw at him! You should watch it, it is very helpful to SEE what the Old Testament was talking about. I wanna be faithful like Job, to endure any kind of problems I have in life.

The Book of Job is a book about "A Time of Testing". Not a "test"; but a"time" of testing. When you get to the end of the book Job tells us what happened to him through this time of testing and declares: "Before I have heard about you with the hearing of the ear; but now my eye sees You." Job also declares that He received the peace of God. This world, at the end of time, will be placed in a time much like this. We know this by the church of Philadelphia (Revelation Ch. 2 or 3) "... the time of testing which will come upon the whole earth". When you read God's response to Job you see God questioning Job. He dazzles Job with His incredible knowledge. I mean our God knows everything. Absolutely everything. And we need to know that we have an enemy (Lucifer, Satan). If you notice Satan was doing all the horrible things to Job, his family and his friends, not God. Something that may help you: Michael Card wrote a song called "Job's Suite". It is a little long, but it takes you through the three phases of the book and I think you will understand the whole book after listening to it. God Bless!!!

It is important that we understand it because our Lord said that at the end of time "the time of testing would come for all those who dwell on the earth". Job went through a "time of testing" which is different from a test. He lost his family, his livelihood, his health. His friends were compassionate until they wanted to go back to their lives, then they just wanted to move on; but Job was still, as he put it, "sitting in the ashes and waiting for the Lord." So, they began to tell Job why he was suffering, so he'd confess, repent and they all could move on. But, Job states "God would not crush me for some 'secret' sin. Yet, though He slay me, still I'll trust in Him." But, God was not slaying Job, Satan was. Job obviously did not know this at the time. At the end of time, Jesus Christ will open one seal at a time: The four horsemen of the apocalypse: The antichrist, the false christ, will ride in as the savior. He comes as an "angel of light" but he takes peace from the earth, brings famine, brings death and then the saints who are still around are martyred. While Jesus Christ opens the seals and gives Satan the permission "to test all those who dwell on the earth" this is not God's wrath; neither is God doing it. It is Satan. The bible tells us that this false Christ is given "all the powers of Satan, by Satan." I'm sure you've heard "What evil meant for harm, God meant for good?" God says that we sinners are purified in fire, coming out shining like gold. This is what God means to accomplish. He said that He would give "great strength" to those who are His to withstand what they must withstand. But, Satan obviously, means it for evil. Just as in Job's case, evil blames God so everyone's anger is positioned on God. At the end of Job's testing, Job says: "No purpose of Yours can be thwarted ... Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand. Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know." "I have heard about You by the hearing of the ear; But now my eye sees You. Therefore I retract and I repent, in dust and ashes." So what was given to Job? The peace of God; eyes to see (and ears to hear). Michael Card in his song "Job's Suite" says it best: "You are the storm that calms my soul ..." In Chapters 38-41 God simple is SHOCKING Job into the reality of who He is. Job is mesmerized by this response he seems to forget all his suffering quite quickly. At the beginning of the Book, God declares Job an upright man. Satan wants to prove God wrong. So God gives Satan parameters but allows it. I've always wondered why God would allow such a thing? But, when I read that "the whole earth would enter into a time of testing" in the end. I believe this is the book which will give wisdom to some people (As it says in Rev. 7:14): These are the ones who came out of the Great Tribulation, and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. While most curse God and die (as suggested by Job's wife); others seek God and find their peace in Him as Job did. You want a WOW moment? In the song, again another Michael Card song, "Known by the Scars" put on by Blaze 25z: there is a video when the words are played "When the kingdom comes with its perfected sons" and you see the armies of God riding on their white horses behind our Lord, the only One with the sword, that will be YOU on one of those horses coming down from heaven with His kingdom as He destroys the evil with a breath of His mouth,.

When I was young I didn’t understand some of the stories. With age I understood more deeply and got the message within. Reading the Bible requires factors like maturity, world experience, meditation , the gift of the Holy Spirit, and instruction. I’m excited to begin the Bible in a year! @Goliath 888 That's a tough question, definitely a verse people often discuss! I am no expert, but what my friends and I usually come back to when we discuss this is the fact that Jesus is both fully God and fully human. As God, specifically as the member of the Trinity associated with the Word and Knowledge, Jesus as the Son would have all knowledge - He is, after all, God. When Jesus became man, he became fully human, while also retaining Himself as fully God. As humans, our knowledge is inherently limited - we must learn, we must acquire. It is possible that Jesus was perhaps referring to His human nature in this statement - what is known by his Godly nature may not necessarily be known by His human one on earth, where he acts with a human will, thinks with a human mind, loves as humans do (but perfectly). This is how it is stated in the Catechism: 472 This human soul that the Son of God assumed is endowed with a true human knowledge. As such, this knowledge could not in itself be unlimited: it was exercised in the historical conditions of his existence in space and time. This is why the Son of God could, when he became man, “increase in wisdom and in stature, and in favour with God and man”, and would even have to inquire for himself about what one in the human condition can learn only from experience. This corresponded to the reality of his voluntary emptying of himself, taking “the form of a slave”. 473 But at the same time, this truly human knowledge of God’s Son expressed the divine life of his person. “The human nature of God’s Son, not by itself but by its union with the Word, knew and showed forth in itself everything that pertains to God.” Such is first of all the case with the intimate and immediate knowledge that the Son of God made man has of his Father. The Son in his human knowledge also showed the divine penetration he had into the secret thoughts of human hearts. 474 By its union to the divine wisdom in the person of the Word incarnate, Christ enjoyed in his human knowledge the fullness of understanding of the eternal plans he had come to reveal. Hopefully that helps! The Trinity in general is a very tough concept to begin to grasp - it is, after all, a mystery, and we can only pray to come closer and closer to an understanding of it.

@Goliath 888 Things that seem contradictory to us at first glance, or even after much consideration, cannot ultimately be that way. Much about God is a mystery to us - we are only human, and there is a whole plane of understanding that even the wisest of us may not ever reach. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try! It’s good that you have questions and are looking for answers - we should all be doing that. Things won’t always make sense to us - that’s where faith comes in :) There are many different explanations online worded differently than the one I just gave, if that helps!

I’ve had a very challenging 4 years. Through everything God has been present and working in my family’s favor. Through it all we are better off and more joyful today than we’ve been in 4 years. Today both of my children are safe. Today both of my children are happy. They are also both disabled. I’ve been struggling so much with God over this truth of our life. The bible is so deep like the books of wisdom and the order of how it was written. Breaking down the story of Job as 4 parts and how it foreshadows the coming of Christ the redeemer and how it also entails the difference in the reality of heaven vs the world's reality. The bible is such an amazing book of how the Old testament ties into the new testament and Jesus Christ is the bridge between the two. I am beginning to understand it and it does wonders to one's faith.

It all depends upon how Scripture is interpreted which can be taken out of context. I had a friend who hadn't received a Christian education even though he was Baptized in a Lutheran denomination as a Protestant. I advised him to read the Bible and he told me he had to stop because all of the genocide in the Old Testament. I told him you have to keep in mind of the times it wasn't only the Israelites who killed man, woman, and child even infants and pregnant women were slain but it was practiced by many peoples including the Pagans. The way things worked in those days a conquered people could either be integrated into society of the conqueror or if they were too much of a future risk which is why genocide happened back then. If the children lived and their mothers to raise them when these children grown up they would revolt against the conqueror in which they would be slain in revenge. It actually made sense which would prevent future problems.

One thing I found when I read the bible is the book is written more about God, than us. It is how God deals with humanity. God is holy and humanity is sinful. The more I read it, the more patient I view God. Some things seem to contradict or confuse; but after a time the books come together and the Truth starts to reveal itself piece by piece. They link back and forth; and back and forth. In the Gospel of John Jesus asks: "Why do you not understand what I am saying?" Then, He answers His own question, "It is because you cannot hear My Word. You are of your father the devil and you want to do the desires of your father." Sounds pretty harsh. But, Jesus came to speak the truth, as so often He says "I tell you the truth ..." The truth will set you free from sin and death (not physical death, but the second death - the Lake of Fire (Rev. 20:14)). But, you must "continue in My Word..." If you give up, because it seems too confusing, then you will never "hear" the miracle of the book. But, if you truly want something, you go for it. So, just keep going. It is far more amazing then you could ever imagine. This is one thing that proves it is God's Words. All these different people, all these different authors, over all these thousands of years, and the miracle of salvation, eternal life, and the existence, love and righteousness of God and His plan are all truly contained in this one book. But, if you give up ... you'll never HEAR it. He reveals it to those who truly want it and keep searching for it as a :"Hidden Treasure" (Matt. 13:44; a "Costly Pearl" (Matt. 13:45, 46)

Too sad the liberals made him the enemy of the media, trying to get the young and tech trusting people on their side believing whatever they tell them. In every country you have CNN and other TV channels that support the left, imagine what the world beliefs and how it can affect the reality when everyone lives their life believing in those. Father Mike, I have grew up Catholic and love the church and Jesus. Why do people who say they are Just Christian say that Catholicism isn’t a part of Christianity? They say it goes against God. I am truly confuse because all Catholics I know worship and live God only.

Are Catholics Christian? Catholics believe Jesus is the Christ (Christ-ian) so Catholics are Christians as they have been for 2,000 years. The ones who say Catholics are not Christians forget that the Bible and the Books and Letters it contains were declared Inspired by the Catholic Church, so why do they not throw down their Bibles if Catholics do nor qualify?

Hey, I suggest you start reading the Gospel of Marc. Place yourself in the scene : for instance I like to be in Marc chapter 5 verse 37-43 ( the little girl), but for you it's gonna be different, what character do you relate to in the Gospel ? A chapter or five minutes a day (with a timer) is a great start. God does speak through Scripture !! I'm praying for you. PS: English is not my first langage, sorry for the mistakes

I would also suggest reading the Gospels and New Testaments first. By having insight on what Christian teachings are supposed to look like as revealed by Jesus, reading the Old Testament books afterwards gives you the insight that you need to get through the darker scripture as Fr. Mike called them. Also, if you have any questions about passages in the Bible, ask a priest (or more) about them. Priests help bring scripture into focus (as demonstrated by Fr. Mike in this video.) Try doing some Lectio Divinas with scripture to immerse yourself in the scripture. Lastly, always pray that God will reveal what He wants you to know when you are reading scripture.
