Cherry Wan - One thing we all need to realize is that we are sinners by nature as well as sinners by practice. The hardest thing for us all to do is to admit that we are guilty sinners before a holy God. We try to do our best and to control our tongues. We are wasting our time completely. Even if we could manage it, the Bible is clear that 'All our righteousnesses are like filthy rags in the sight of God'. Also it says in Romans ch. 3 v 23: For there is no difference, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God'. That is the bad news. Here is the good news. Jesus said: 'I am come, not call the righteous, but sinners to repentance'. 'The Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost'. The apostle Paul reminds us: 'This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief'. For by grace (God's unmerited favour) are we saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest anyone should boast'. Ask God to save you, for Christ's sake and glory. (John ch. 6 v 37).

Since have returned to confession on a regular basis, for the most part, I have corrected myself of the very bad "habit" of saying the "Oh my G..." Now when I accidentally say it I immediately notice and am sorry I did say it. Then I go to confession and I accuse myself of taking the Lord's Name in vain. Since I returned to confession I am hyper aware of how grave the sin is and it now bugs me a lot when my wife says it. I used to fear confession. Now, thanks to the Holy Spirit's help returning to confession, I LOVE confession. It a GREAT grace that God has given us to help us become better persons! Knowing you have to confess your sins week after week is a good deterrent from sinning. My attitude has changed towards confession Today I find it appalling that Catholics almost never go to confession anymore when it truly helped me to become a better person! Thank you for this video! What are we to do as Catholics when someone at work is speaking to us directly either a coworker or a customer and they are venting to you and keep using God’s name in vain? What are we and what should we say to say to them? Please, give it a like if you want the Father Mike to answer this question.

I agree with father!! Saying “Oh my ….” Is grave matter! We need to be reverent and never forget who God is and what we owe Him!!

We have lost a sense of God - reverence of God in the world. 5:26. So true... help us to revere you more, O Lord. Have mercy on us.

I have recently started to complete a prayer when someone near me says the Name in vain. If they say J.C. just finish a prayer for them with something like ":Bless us this day". The look you get is priceless. It may help someone who says it without direct intent to profane the Name to think about it. I often, in the rough crowd, seem to use the vocabulary of a drunken sailor, but manage it without taking God's Name in vain. I am working on the other rough language,

It is said that you can ask for forgiveness in this matter by praying the Divine Praises (and confessing, naturally): Blessed be God. Blessed be His Holy Name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man. Blessed be the Name of Jesus. Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart. Blessed be His Most Precious Blood. Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most Holy. Blessed be her Holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her Glorious Assumption. Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse. Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints. Amen.

This is the sin I struggle most with. It was such a part of my vocabulary when I was younger and since I’ve returned to the Church it’s been a constant battle to remove it from my vernacular.

Praying the Rosary every day is extremely helpful against this sin (and all sins, but especially this one). I would also like to recommend some more specific things that I think you may find helpful in breaking this vice: 1. Foster a love for the Name of God. This comes through meditation on the Person of Jesus and the Eucharist (especially through the mysteries of the Rosary). 2. Bless His Name throughout the day in reparation for those who blaspheme it. Say "Blessed be the Name of God." 3. Try to break the overall habit of exclamatory speech, even "harmless" phrases. Things like "shoot," "gosh," "darn" etc. are not inherently evil phrases, but they still perpetuate the underlying vice which leads to evil phrases in moments of serious frustration. Work on bearing frustrations silently. Make an effort to not even think exclamations and you will find that the struggle against saying them basically disappears. I think those three things will help a great deal. God Bless.

Thank you so much for sticking to your guns on this, Fr. Mike! It is so clear, not just in the Ten Commandments, but take a look at Acts. The power of the NAME of Jesus is a huge theme throughout that book.

Thank you for making this video Father. I hope young people see it. I work at a Catholic school and the kids seriously have a problem taking God’s Name in vain. Please pray for them. 🙏 I try to tell them not to but I’m not good at explaining why they shouldn’t. Plus I don’t tsar something every time I hear it. I hope God won’t hold that against me. I know it’s my job to teach them better. So, please pray for me as well. 😔🙏

Thank you a Father Mike for making this video. You are 100% correct and I’m glad you are sticking to your guns. Catholics lukewarmness and not caring about the Lords name is one of our biggest problems in the Church. I cringe everything I hear Jesus’s name used in cursing or in any other wrong way. It especially bothers me when I hear other Catholics I know in my parish say it without any remorse or care. I just say a prayer for them and ask for Gods mercy. I wish I had more courage to confront them but I get so angry that I fear I would say something hurtful and judgemental. I know when I have taken Gods name in vain, I kinda smack myself to remind myself of what I’ve just done. I’m grateful for the grace God gives me in being aware of the name above all names that is Jesus Christ. Thank you Father Mike for all you do! Peace and goodness to you

it's so sad! I live in Italy and the blasphemies are in common language, you just have to leave the house to hear the worst things. I wish there was common respect

Do the elderly also say blasphemies often or is it more common among the young Italians? It's sad to hear that taking place in "Catholic" Italy.

I agree with you I say all the time when I talk to God like I say oh my god that’s so great because I feel he’s with me all day and all night so I just converse with him throughout the day yes it sounds crazy to Some people but I really believe that our holy father in heaven is always with me throughout the day like today I want walking in the pouring rain and I just had the best time just praying out loud not too loud I don’t want people to think I’m A crazy Lady. in a long Drenched overcoat in all I must’ve looks like a crazy lady but that didn’t matter to me I felt the Holy Spirit and I had the best conversation with my Heavenly Father I just had the best walk in the rain ever it rains here in Washington all the time but yes I do agree with you and thank you for the wonderful video it just made me feel Better and relieved so thank you very much and God bless you 🌸❤️🙏🏼

YES! We have totally lost a reverence for and a belief in our Lord and creator. Using, saying His name in vain is a huge part of this. It became a really big deal for me after converting, and, as with many things, I have become acutely aware of the misuse of our Lord's name around me. I say a prayer each time I hear it. I recently heard a nun say "Oh my glory" which I think is a really cool exclamation instead. :-)
