These cheapo sausages make a great 'binder' for minced meat..to be made into meatballs.just defrost about 4 sausage to a small pkt of minced meat..fry to brown..and add to stews/pasta..etc..😋

I know this was a year ago but I just picked up on this. Price has gone up a bit £3 for Richmond and £1.50 for Just Essential but still a massive difference. We've always got a bag of the Just Essential in our freezer - me and my wife call them "school dinner" sausages, cheap and cheerful but nice and tasty. Well worth the money.

Hi just thought I would add a point on here. When you see the weight on a package if you notice sometimes there’s an e next to it. That means estimated so you could actually get a bit more or a bit less. So not always exactly what you think you’re getting

For a few years now I've bought my pork sausages from the local corner shop. Most of what they sell is pretty bog-stndard, but their sausages are something else. Hand made, so they do vary in size, and wonderfully tasty. I buy the thin link and freeze them in pairs. They last me for weeks!

For the first time ever, I've bought Tesco barn eggs just to try. £1.35 for *15 eggs* . The prices of the standard eggs had all gone up considerably and I couldn't get to the farm gate where I usually buy free range eggs because the road was closed. I would not, on principle, buy caged eggs, but at least the hens in barns have some room to move around a bit and roost. Another shopper was also buying the barn eggs and I asked her whether they were okay. She said, yes. Mixed sizes, so sometimes you might want to eat two if they're small. I will post a comment after I've eaten the first one tomorrow what I think, but this is one major food item you could compare - provided the people in your family like eggs. You could compare barn eggs with standard eggs and with the expensive eggs like the Tesco Clarence Court eggs at £2.60 for six. Vast price differences, but do the expensive eggs really taste better?
@L1RW

Apparently the boxes marked free range” are from chickens that lay eggs in only a metre square space to roam. Free range is a supermarket con in my opinion. If you want fresh, either get chickens, or buy from someone who owns chickens.

First impressions: The Just Essentials sausages look far nicer than the Richmond ones. I used to buy Richmond fresh sausages, but then you did a review of ASDA Farm Stores sausages, which at the time were only 80 pence per pack, and they tasted lovely. Recently, before ASDA introduced the yellow pack Just Essentials range, the Farm Stores ones had been replaced by another cheap ASDA sausage, which was just as good. And now the Just Essentials sausages are pretty much what those Farm Stores ones were.

Hi Gaz You get what you pay for. I'm sorry but I'm spoilt by my local butcher.. 80% pork.. and taste amazing.. No sulphites and additives. Not cheap but the enjoyment is on a different level. Downside, apart from price.. unless you freeze them they don't keep more than 24-48 hours before they taint in flavour but that's because everything is natural food there are no preservatives... Unfortunately many people may never get to taste real pork sausages and that's a shame as additives make up to 60% (or more) of most high street products. Keep up the excellent reviews...

With sausages I like to give them a quick fry in a pan to get them brown and then finish 'em off in the oven to make sure they're cooked through (with a foil cover so they don't dry out). Well I do the "breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince, supper like a Pauper" method so my breakfast is biggest meal. I begin with bacon and sausage, cook them slow, leaves a lot of fat / sticky in pan, then add mushrooms which de-glase the pan, cleans it, soaks up some of the salt from the previous, then the pan is clean drop in whisked eggs, turn it, then drop back the sausages, bacon, mushrooms, to warm up. One pan cookining. Wipe clean then ready for next day. The sausages thus are cooked slow and kept warm. You can also defrost to begin microwave to begin to save time+money. In between I do all the other morning things I can shower while mushrooms cooking (they give off a lot of water).

I always cook sausages in the Air fryer, All come out nicely browned and not spilt. So it's purely down to the taste, When it comes to frozen sausages Richmond's wins evetime for me.. But they used to be much cheaper than they are now! I'd happily buy the Asda essentials instead to save pennies as they are nice, In fact I don't think I've come across a bad frozen sausage to be honest, It's just Richmond's is the nicest.

If I have sausage it has to have a very brown skin, so I do them in a non stick frying pan and that also renders out some of the fat. Have to say that your recent reviews of this budget Asda range is very impressive.

I mentioned to you last week that I manufacture my own high-end sausages out here in the far East but whenever I get back to the UK I am desperate for hotel breakfast sausages which I would happily eat all day long and most of them are either Richmond or Richmond taste-alikes! One of Richmond’s directors used to be a Neighbour and when I asked her what meat they used she would go no further than to say “Pig”!

@@BaldFoodieGuy if you've not seen it Asda sell sliced cheese called pilgrims choice. Extra mature it's in a black and purple packet. It's £1.25 and by far the cheapest cheese I've seen. It's really nice too. I have had issues of being able to separate the slices but it's still worth buying as it's really good. Even Asda own cheese is £2 odd.

@@Matt19matt19 wow that's cheap for a good brand of cheese. It's it cheap because it's in slices?

@@BaldFoodieGuy I don't think so as even the Asda own brand slices are more expensive. Like I said the only issue I've had is separating the slices sometimes But as a cheese it's really flavourful as it's extra mature. Maybe not worth a review unless you can work your magic on a Vs perhaps. Something to look out for anyway. You can save money and it's not even for an inferior tasting product.

I always buy Smartprice/Just Essentials sausages because they are good value and taste really nice. I've bought Richmond/Walls sausages in the past, and, for me they have a strange taste, so, I always go back to the cheaper brand. At the end of the day, as with so many things, you are paying for the brand name.

You can generally tell the quality of sausages by the pork content. Decent ones hover around the 85 - 90% mark. Check the cheap ones, I’ve noticed as low as 50% before on certain values brands. If memory serves, I don’t think Richmond are anything to write home about.

I have become converted to ASDA just essentials. Its the only last supermarket that is offering decent quality food for the price. Its hit and miss in Aldi/Lidl whether you will get essential range products. They are either out of stock or not stocked up depending on the region. A shame they have restricted their range to 3 per item and that most of it is now OOS due to popularity!

If they hadn't restricted it to 3 per person it would have been OOS even quicker so I think they're justified in doing it to give more people the opportunity to buy them.
@jungleboy1
@jungleboy1 2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewlaw That is true, but its been a few weeks since they introduced it and I've seen more OOS products than before. They need to get their supply chain sorted. I don't know if they are selling essentials at a loss (i expect they are), so they may want to restrict the number of items they buy. Then they force us to get the more pricier equivalent which in turn makes them profit.🤣

To be honest, I buy 2 packs of 14 thick Richmond sausages, from Iceland, sometimes and I quite like me. Not the best sausage but if you fry them nice, they are quite nice. I do like the odd sausage and bacon, sausage omelette for breakfast or sausage mash peas and gravy for lunch or dinner. I watched Blue Van Man reviewing Harvester cooked breakfast and it looked so good. I was starving aswell. Sausage looked great. Nicely brown. Lovely looking hash browns. Bacon etc. Although, he covered it in syrup.

The reason they are both 42% pork is that in the UK it can't be called a sausage if it has less than 42% meat but the quality of pork can differ from cheaper products.
