As somebody who is also asexual, I find the lack of positive ace representation in media to be quite frustrating. Asexual characters are often depicted as lacking empathy or having an inflated sense of ego, which just seems like targeted stereotyping. A character's personality or how they view themselves in comparison to others shouldn't determine their sexuality.

Yeah as someone who is also asexual and doesn’t drink alcohol I see a lot of similarities between the way people view asexuals and the way people view non-drinkers, that is that both probably have a holier than thou attitude because they’ve given up something most people view to be quite pleasurable but also impure or immoral. It doesn’t seem to occur to them that people might simply be unmotivated or repulsed by sex, or think alcohol tastes nasty, so they assume that we’ve done so because we view the activities as sinful and by extension people who do those things as sinful.

Ngl I think the main reason Octavia is asexual is because she’s a minor and Vivzie more than likely doesn’t want people to sexualize her. At the same time, it’s totally fine that she’s ace, but like you said, there isn’t a whole lot of material of her to work with to really dig deeper into that part of her character.
@cathygrandstaff19573 ай бұрын
I think it’s more likely Viv doesn’t have any real plans to develop her character beyond whatever is relevant for Stolas so she made her asexual so she doesn’t have to go through the trouble of thinking up a SO for her while she can claim to have more representation. Asexual characters are convenient that way, unless you’re talking romantic asexuals who can still want and have romantic partners.

So I think this question was by someone who knew that and was trying to prove for whether Viv had any plans of reviving Alastair’s love interest in some form. Probably because that was my mom’s attitude when I came out as aromantic asexual, like of course yes you’re not going to have a boyfriend you’re too selfish to give anything up for a relationship. @Mumumon As an ace person, I'm kind of done with people perpetually trying to widen the label for people who don't need it. Why do you say you're gay? Because you only want to be with people of the same sex. Why do you say you're straight? Because you want to be with people of the opposite sex. Bi? Etc etc Yes, ace should mean that you are somewhat sex repulsed or that you atleast want minimal sex, and aro should mean you want minimal to no romance. Yea, I get it can be somewhat of a spectrum, but people have expanded it too far and it just confuses everyone. Now the label doesn't clearly indicate what we want to a potential partner, and it's already hard enough dating ace/aro/aroace as it is. TLDR I ain't dealing with "Asexual sluts" no more

While I do agree - I am an aro person in a relationship - I think that way too much aro/aspec fandom content immediately devolves into “oh well ace/aro people CAN like these things so it’s okay for me to basically erase their sexuality/romantic identity in my fan content”. It’s nuanced but I think defaulting to assume that all aro people are romance positive and ace people are sex positive is just as bad as vice versa. We need good rep for both and fandom creators need to learn that an aro character can exist without you needing to ship them

MAMMON IS ASEXUAL??? I genuinely did not know that, it's almost like the only time some ones asexuality is brought up in the hellverse is when someone is making a sexual advance towards them manufactured to make them uncomfortable!!! I do like the ace in the hole joke Rosie makes about alastor, and I would have preferred that to be his sort of reveal of being asexual instead of angel dust being 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 with him? It was more wholesome and silly and showed their dynamic well without bringing away attention from the matter at hand to focus on his asexuality for no reason. The fact that the two most narcissistic characters are asexual can be worrying but at least Octavia is there it balance it out some what? I do like the acknowledgement that Asexual people aren't automatically aromantic and visa versa but it would be nice to see a asexual character in a relationship? Since no one wants Mammon's stanky ass, Octavia's whole deal is about being lonely and ignored and god only knows what's happening with alastor it does kind of (probably unintentionally but none the less) feed into the idea that asexuals are just lonely and loveless in every way. Being asexual myself I've put a lot of thought into my asexual and/or aromantic characters, even if it doesn't get brought up directly in the story the casual life of an asexual character can really mean a lot to an audience member. It's about the little things too, not just the big picture. It's not the worst ace rep in the world as we've seen. Barely anything. Of any of these characters. But it certainly doesn't get the love and praise of other examples of representation in the show The fandom though. MY GOD THE FANDOM.... Honestly the helluvaverse representation is just awful like think about it. All the Pan characters seem to be heavily into sex with Chazz, Blitz, Asmodeus, and Husk (who, in my opinion, should have been pan/ace), making the sexual innuendo feel heavy-handed. The gay characters are all twinks, with Angel Dust, Fizzaroli, Vox, and Stolas fitting that stereotype. The bisexual characters are poorly written, with Moxxie being bisexual but portrayed as the pathetic male who needs his girlboss wife to save him. His whole mafia episode was horribly forced. Charlie is bisexual but doesn't even mention her ex or show any attraction to boys to support this. Vaggie is one of the only main lesbian characters, portrayed as a no-nonsense badass, but she solely exists to serve Charlie. Not to mention the handful of LGBTQ+ characters that are used as fanservice. There's little gender representation, and the only remotely significant character in that regard is Millie's transfem sister (which I do like), but she doesn’t truly matter to the plot. If she were written out, nothing would change. It's frustrating because many of the characters fall into stereotypes, and the representation seems to focus almost entirely on sexuality and it does annoying stereotypes.

Edit because I don't think I was quite clear enough: I don't disagree with you about the double standard, but I also kind of get it. I think there's a distinct difference between making a bit (ok a lot) of lewd comments and jokes and doesn't vs... well, what Val does to put it very, very nicely. I'm also not sure how Alastor feels about Angel dust's comments/jokes, or whether he's just dismissive of them or if he just only cares if they're directed at him. (And there hasn't been much flirting with alastor on-screen, mostly just a couple jokes from angel dust here and there) I'm far more concerned with how they portrayed Verosika and her gang straight-up "taking" Moxxie. That... oof. 8:08 - I'm entirely convinced Mammon just cares about money and/or power. He's just cartoonishly evil and that's ok. Octavia... yeeeaaahh there's way too little and Vivzie might've just not wanted people to lewd her, or at least limit the lewdness people would do to her. (r34 is a 'rule' for a reason, mostly just a fact of life and how people are).

Interesting points. As an aroace myself, I have a lot of thoughts on hellaverse ace representation. I definitely agree that minority characters being villainous doesn't automatically make them bad representation. As you said, there is a difference between writing a minority character who is therefore a bad person and writing a minority character who also happens to be a bad person. About Alastor, I think he falls into the second category, and he has enough depth to his character to actually be good representation if his asexuality is explored a little more. From what I can tell, not only is he canonically confirmed to be asexual, but he is also heavily implied to be aromantic as well, and more specifically on the averse side of those spectrums. He reacted with disinterest or revulsion whenever the subject was brought up. Rosie's comment about Charlie being too young for him when she called him an "ace in the hole" wasn't just a reference to sex, she was talking about dating, about sex and romance as a package. She managed to confidently conclude that Alastor is asexual when Alastor can't even articulate his it clearly himself due to his lack of education on the subject, something I doubt she would have been able to reasonably do if the issue was muddled at all by him expressing much of an interest in finding a partner throughout their (likely decades long) history. Amir Talai has also stated that he wouldn't ship Alastor because he is aroace, and while he has since retracted that to say he has only canonically been confirmed ace, Vivzie has also stated that she doesn't want to reveal Alastor's romantic orientation to avoid problems with shipping, which is telling in itself. Not only is Alastor's romantic orientation the only one not revealed in cannon, but what other romantic orientation would be "problematic" for shipping if not an aromantic person with no interest in romance? I'm aware I'm somewhat paraphrasing, but I would suggest watching Ayy Lmao's video for more context and sources. As such, while I don't think shipping Alastor is necessarily wrong, I can get uncomfortable with how intense the shipping and sexualisation can get and wish there was more general respect for what was stated in the show. I do actually happen to like Alastor, Mammon and Octavia, even if the last two can't really count as ace representation, but I think there is great potential to explore different parts of the spectrum here. Alastor is a sex repulsed aroace. Mammon could be sex favourable (he has no problem selling the Fizzarolli sex robots), but not interested in romance. Octavia could be more neutral, but still wants to find love at some point (imagine the Goetia family trying to arrange a marriage for her). Just some ideas.

Hi, quick correction! While Alastor hasn’t been confirmed to be aromantic, I would say he’s HEAVILY implied to be by the same line of logic as the thing with Ed - that is to say, Amir Talai also had a recent moment where he stated Alastor to be aro-ace and while he’s since retracted the statement since it’s not outright confirmed, in the video Viv is sitting right there and doesn’t correct him and even nods when he says this. Also in the “ace in the hole” joke, Rosie seems to be talking about the idea of him dating Charlie in general, which also implies aromantic, and I’ll have to check the source but I think Prime once released a video of Alastor with both aro and ace colors plus his Valentine’s card also implies him being aro (while all the other characters have romantic/sexual connotations to theirs, his just says “you’re a very deer friend”). Vivzie I think just refuses to confirm it 100% because of potential fandom backlash to shipping (which I think is honestly questionable, since romantic orientation deserves to be represented just as much as sexual orientation and aromanticism shouldn’t just be an afterthought to asexuality). But anyway, as an aro ace person who’s very much on the sex repulsed/romance averse side of the spectrum, I still don’t think it’s an issue to ship him with other characters as long as it’s clear that he’s not experiencing romantic/sexual attraction to them. To me it gets icky when he experiences clear sexual attraction to a character or “falls in love,” but him being in different ship dynamics with more of a curious or queerplatonic vibe is a-okay in my opinion, and aro people can still be in those kinds of relationships :)

Like the amount of ppl I’ve met whose parents would act like that … usually explain that their parents messed up their view of sexuality. Even their own. I'm asexual and I think that ace-rep in the helluverse is lame. Alastor could've been great but then vivzie had to imply that he's aromantic too which I think feeds into the stereotype that ace and aro are synonyms, the fact there's no aromantic characters doesn't help. Also always hate RadioDust (Alastor is the sex-repulsed type) I feel like Mammon and Octavia barely matter, Mammon just had the asexual label slapped onto him, he showed no signs of asexuality, he's always fixated on sexualizing the merch he sells (I know sex sells but he even does it to merch that isn't sexual like scarfs) and he has two robo-fizzes next to him during the competition like a pimp, was he just too straight for viv and she got bored of making every character gay and bi? I guess Octavia shows signs when she's uncomfortable by Stolas's dirty talk and doesn't get what he meant by 'wanting their bodies' but I feel like any teen would be uncomfortable with their dad dirty talking, and the fact Stolas even made that comment to his underaged daughter is weird as hell, ace or not!

You do know people that are Ace can still have sex if they want too, right? Mammon doesn’t have to be sex repulsed to be labeled as Ace, he’s probably either disinterested in sex. Or he does have sex but he doesn’t find anyone sexually appealing to him. You don’t need to be sexually attracted to someone to have sex with them, and you definitely don’t have to be sex repulsed to be labeled as Asexual.
@MischiefMeow2 ай бұрын
@queen_beefox I'm aware of that, I'm sex neutral myself and make suggestive jokes at times. I don’t really understand the point your trying to make here Also, I know you never said “you need to be sex-repulsed to be ace” but the way you worded it made me think that’s what you were trying to say, I’m not trying to argue with you, I’m just trying to understand your point
@MischiefMeow2 ай бұрын
@@queen_beefox Usually someone who is obsessed with inserting sex in everything isn't a sign of uninterest in sex, the point of asexuality is that our lives don't revolve around it and we don't understand what sexual attraction feels like, and even if he sexualized his merch just for sales, once again, why would he do it to something as unrelated to sex as a scarf if he isn't interested in sex? Those two fizz robots seemed more like a pimp style thing which I'd say is pretty allosexual, like when people mention Mammon having traits of all sins those robots are what people point to when they say lust. Now to be fair, I will say that Mammon didn't show any signs of actually wanting sex, but let's be real NO ONE would guess he's asexual if we weren't told, partly due to what I said, and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Viv just slapped the label on him just for points. And yes I know sex positive asexuals also exist, but once again Mammon showed no signs of actually lacking sexual attraction atleast for now, so he could easily pass as being allosexual, atleast Octavia showed something before being confirmed.

I hate when characters are revealed as a certain sexuality by the creator and then their sexuality plays absolutely no role in the series. I really want Alastor’s asexuality and touch-averse behavior to become a major plot point and part of the reason why Vox hates Alastor. I rarely see my sexuality (aroace) reflected in media, even if it’s confirmed, they’re usually just…there. Al is a major character, I hope Vivziepop actually explores his asexuality and to what extent it affects his life, relationships, and others around him.

You know part of me feels like vivziepop and some of the team just doesn't respect asexual people. Because if i remember correctly someone had brought up a behind the scenes clip or something where blitz's voice actor Brandon literally made a sexual comment about octavia. Assuming Octavia was always intended to be asexual, it's just really horrible. And it seems like vivziepop just chose characters she knew that she didn't want to bother shipping rather than actually exploring their identity like with the others. The closest we get is Rosie's joke about alastor being an ace in the hole and him being confused about the comment for one second. Edit: alright yeah the mastermind episode that just came out proved that vivziepop does not respect asexual characters. They literally has asmodeus and beelzebub make fun of mammon for not getting laid so blatantly disrespecting an asexual person, and not even a few minutes later have mammon hit on leviathan and make a sexual innuendo and just erase that one miniscule bit of ace representation that was even there.

Also, you pointed out that asexual and aromantic are not the same thing, which I agree with, but then proceeded to mix up the terms anyway when you listened to Viv talking. Hmm, good video aside or well, good points being explored here, but multiple things were said to where I had to pause and throw my own bit here because it was mentioned so often that the video lost me. I don’t think asexual means totally repulsed by sex. That would be sex repulsion, which I happen to have in varying degrees at different times, mostly due to trauma. Like, asexual just means a lack of sexual attraction to anybody. Not a lack of libido or disgust towards the idea. It’s a complex topic overall that Idek if I can appropriately get into here bcs the topic is kind of big one, plus it’s err. Ykno. nsfw. But for an example: I generally don’t mind sexual jokes, I don’t mind people being sexually attracted to me, I’m not ALWAYS disgusted by things sex related, however it’s incredibly hard for me to find myself sexually attracted to anybody and it’s always been that way. One of my best friends is the same exact way too. We are just extremely indifferent but have the sexual attraction of a peanut. As a teen I’d always say I’m asexual to ward off sex talk or sexual attention but I grew to learn it’s not the best explanation, mostly for the reason I just described, and it doesn’t accurately describe every asexual persons experience, generalization isn’t a good thing in this aspect but I don’t really blame you bcs I was also misled on it for awhile. You’re also a minor iirc.. Being misinformed about this earlier on kind of messed up my perception of myself and realized itd grow into other problems and even offend some ace people and whatnot

Honestly I think Ace/Aro characters are starting to be more and more of my favorite characters when either writing or watching. (Now before I go on I do feel like I have to say my biasedness since my partner is Ace, so that definitely is a SMALL reason for my liking of Ace characters. Also that I have been in fwb with people before, so I do have my experience with being in those type of relationships.) For some context about me before I go on is that I am an extrovert who is currently dating someone, so because of that I am not looking to get with someone. But just because I am dating someone doesn't mean my love for meeting and talking to new people will slow down. I love getting to know and make small memories along side with new people when going out. Its fun, makes for good stories, and tends to broaden my understanding of things. But what I don't like is when people get jokingly touchy with me and tend to make comments about people's body. I get that with social media alot of things tends to seem either overly normalized and or overly negatively affective. One of those being is the loneliness epidemic. So why is it I enjoy Ace characters? Well for starters I think Ace characters can show you that not everyone you know or talk to has to be a fling. Sometimes people just like talking to others and spending time around them is good enough for them! Not everything I do like getting them a snack, driving them to home, or even complimenting about their looks means I have a secret crush on them and am trying my best to get with them. I just like being there for people and or getting to know them. Also this hasn't been shown in the series aside from that one "Ace in the hole" scene, but not everyone cares nor really enjoys sex. All though I have had my fair share of having intimate partners, I really didn't enjoy it much afterwards. Sure the moments did seem fun and does feel nice to share when brought up, I really didn't enjoy it as much as I thought? Usually it's more of something else like the conversations, the location, how we met, and more hanging out as a whole than compared to that one moment. So to see characters bounce off each other's energy and to make for memorable writing/scenes as compared to a kiss/sex scene is something I want to see more of. Not everytime a guy hugs his female friend, a guy drawing his guy friend, and a non binary watching a movie with his transgender friend means its a hint between the two. People tend to be social creatures and want to be with others.

I’ve never seen a character like me in media and reading about familiar experiences and his reaction to ADs aggressive introduction in the pilot really resonated with me. RadioSilence works are so familiar to me in my current situation that they make me genuinely upset and the respectful of sexuality fluff with other ships is lovely to read. Makes me feel like I can be loved as a sex repulsed person if someone in a place as carnally obsessed as hell can find a partner. I'm so tempted to write about an "aroace incubus" character concept. Someone who is considered conventionally, irresistibly, supernaturally attractive but wants nothing to do with sex or to have a sexual relationship. All he wants is to have a platonic friend, lol

Personally, I see mammon more as Allosexual. But of course, people keep wanting to correct my headcannnon, when in reality, he is horrible ace representation! In one of the staff doodles from the wiki, he had babies with 3 different demon women, and didn't want to pay for the child insurance. Yeah, cause having s*x with different women sounds ace to me! Overall I don't like vivzis representation of the LGBTQ+ community. I often change characters in my writing and the only thing I kinda dig is the world building.

Being ace doesnt mean you cant have sex, and knowing Mammon, the guy who actively sold sex dolls, probably doesnt even know hes ace
@dragonempress83672 ай бұрын
That's the whole problem. These characters don't even know their sexuality. Heck, are you ace? What is the true definition of asexuality? I have a friend who's ace. She doesn't wanna do the devils tango, but makes hilarious jokes about it. That, and we hardly have allo characters, despite vivzi's shows being sex crazed.

6:00 I'd like to point out that Vivzie said Alastor is a narcissist right after being asked if he is in a romantic relationship. If she was implying that he is not aromantic as you claim (which I personally kind of agree with) then that would mean he is interested in romance but can't get into a relationship because hes a narcissist, not that hes asexual because hes a narcissist. as for people getting mad at people lewding Alastor or shipping him with other characters while thinking he's aromantic: as you said before, all sexualities deserve to be respected the exact same, but most people won't get mad at someone for shipping a canonically straight character with a character of the same sex, either romantically or sexually. Characters are objects at the end of the day, I don't see whats disrespectful about shipping Ace/Aro/Hetero/Homo characters with people they canonically wouldn't be attracted to because its essentially the same as taking two action figures and making them kiss. Its harmless and theres no point in getting mad about it.

I gotta admit, I didn't even know Octavia was ace cuz there wasn't enough time for that to be evident. But to be fair, I didn't get that Peridot was "supposed to be ace" until a storyboard came out & said it, & I only accepted that months after, once I left the fandom completely & stopped shipping Lapidot & projecting onto Peridot. Now I know that if I'm gonna be projecting onto a character, that what the writers write about them doesn't matter & vice versa, that what I do doesn't matter to them. Both ideas can coexist as different iterations & also I just don't give a shit what sexuality they give Ramon, I'll still do what I want.

Honestly because their asexually isn’t brought up much or at all within the show it more gives the impression that they are bad people who just so happened to be ace. Comment coming from a hypersexual ace person.

Rly sorry for my bad English but I rly want to say that I see how Viv doesn't understand that if u r gay I think u don't wanna fck every man. And if u r aroace u don't hate every other person, yo. You just don't feel the same that not aroace people feel for other. I find myself demi on ace spectre when I realized that I never feel *that* way to other people. Only to my partner. We start as a friends and now I'm in love with this buddy so long and only he can made me feel all the ways that other can't. I just don't feel that to other. And never was

A month late but you can have evil representation as any minority but it be best to have someone of the same minority in the story that isn't like them. Like an evil ace character and non-bad ace character, same for skin tones and other stuff.

@dayezartland2475 nuh, he's not bad as a person. Im about like... This ace character once in his life just turned around and went to live as a hermit in the forest. And even in contex it feels like controversial part. No, there are several reasons why would he go away, but one of them its that he and his wife had some troubles in relationships (±40-50 years, at least the progress was on the same level, nobody knew there are some other people then "dirty f#gs", sorry for slur.) They divorsed because of different reason, but still. It seems a little bit strange making an ace char, who basically went to alone-like lifestyle in the freaking forest
