I was just given one and I'm so glad you have this video!

I didn't have an ASH FLASH lantern when I first saw your video, and since I am a lantern, lamp and stove collector, I decided to see what I could find. I just found a NOS 1022 lantern with the original brochure and a mint #1085 two burner propane stove. I have ASH FLASH flashlights and bicycle lights in my flashlight collection, which is the main things they produced. I just did a video (Aug 1st) and will be doing my next video Aug. 8th) which will feature all of these items. If you have a few spare minutes, take a look at these videos, and let me know what you think. Thanks. channel=Mr. Obsoletes Vintage Homesteading.

Thanx for the great video! I notice you never mentioned/went into detail, on globe markings, however. I see most of the derivitive branded ones, seem to also have that brand's name/logo, as well as corresponding AFC logo on the one you tore down. Any further info/details you may have on globe markings? Keep up the great work!... I know it takes a LOT of time & research to compile all the info in your vids

The AshFlash globe markings pretty consistently correspond to the fount decals.

Nice video. I found the history and info entertaining. I have done several lantern and lamp videos on my channel, and I am planning to do a stove video at some point, but am finding info on stoves other than Coleman is scarce. I like to do the history on the stuff I show in my videos, as well as talk about and operate the old equipment also.

Well. Heck... I just found one of these UNIMET GL-3 lanterns. Red. Thanks for the education.

Another excellent video, thank you. Do you also use a #21 size mantle in a 1010 ? Mine is overburning that mantle (flames above the mantle and it's not as bright as ny Colemans).
@king.colemanАй бұрын
I'd use #21s on a 1022, but on a 1010 I'd use a Coleman 99 or Peerless 24A.

I have a 1022 with Success on the globe I am cleaning up that I had intended to list on feebay. I am leaning toward keeping it as my others are propane. This one had some fuel inside during storage and have not found good info as of yet on a "proper" way to clean the inside of the tank. I am going to rinse it with gas at the least until I decide if vinegar is a a bad idea. Has to be a very common issue and likely you may have covered it before. I will have to bing watch the rest of your videos! Great information and video this was. Any input on cleaning the tank would be appreciated.

I usually fill the fount with a hot citric acid mixture and let it sit overnight. White vinegar would work just as well. When a fount is really bad, I've been known to empty a can of carb cleaner into and let it sit for a few days.

Great video. I have several JC Higgins and a few Ash Flash lanterns. As you stated, very hard to find much information

Great job. I'd like to see a video about Coleman Canada. Almost seems like 2 different companies.

Do you anything about the south Norwalk Connecticut facility?
@king.coleman2 ай бұрын
I'm aware that they did some sort of business there, but don't know any more than that.

Great video, and very informative! So without rewatching the whole thing, did you say the AFS branded lanterns are US or Canada?
@king.coleman9 ай бұрын
"AFC" was the brand name the company used in Canada.

Great, thanks! I just added a beautiful, near mint specimen to my collection . It's my first one.

I haven't had my ash flash very long but I find that it burns through a tank of gas very quick, it does have a wide generator so maybe that's the reason. great lantern though, it definitely was a nice addition to my lantern collection.

I haven't run any of my AshFlash lanterns extensively, but it doesn't seem like they should be too inefficient. I use my equivalent AGM lanterns quite a lot. They should consume fuel at pretty much the same rate and I'd say their consumption is "average"...comparable, say, to a Coleman 200.

Nice to learn that flame puffing is part of the process Of generators warming up I would think what is wrong what did I do thanks

Most well-designed lanterns with the proper mantle settle down much more quickly. Frankly, I think the Ash Flash double-mantle model is poorly designed in this regard. The single-mantle model heats up and runs smoothly fairly quickly because it uses a considerably larger mantle and that mantle hangs lower along the generator, radiating more heat. The double-mantle model has the same generator design, but uses smaller mantles that sit mostly above the generator. Because of that design it takes a long time for the generator to get up to operating temperature. In contrast, other double-mantle manufacturers like Coleman, AGM, Akron, etc. used a longer (and thinner!) generator that actually sits directly between the mantles so that it heats up quickly.

Interesting, I wonder if they ever got into any kind of tiff with Coleman considering the similarity in design unless Coleman’s patent expired.
@king.coleman10 ай бұрын
No. There were some lawsuits in the 1920s involving American Gas Machines. Some of the early non-Coleman stove manufacturers had virtually identical designs because of designers moving from one company to another. Coleman was never involved in those and if they didn't sue AGM over their lantern designs, I can't see any reason they would have to sue Ash Flash over designs initially taken from AGM. Remember, Ash Flash didn't copy Coleman; they copied AGM and AGM (along with other companies like Akron, Prentiss-Wabers, Thermos, etc.) all had their own unique, but similar lantern designs, some years before Coleman.
