In that first video, sadly when you say ‘leave space for all vehicles when parking’ a lot of people think this means they should park up on the pavement, blocking pedestrians instead. Amazing how many people can’t park a few yards down the road and use their legs for the rest.

Too many people don't think when they park. They just fixate on: "there's a space, I go there", without giving any thought to, a) how wide the road is, b) what's on the other side, and c) what needs to get past them. I'm sure it's intentional selfishness for some drivers, but I imagine some are genuinely oblivious to the problems they cause because they just don't give it any thought!

I visited the UK in 2019 and drove a pair of rather large motorhomes around the countryside. Keeping them out of everyone's way was always on our minds.... But of course had 2 cases of people being more important than everyone else. One Range Rover driver who refused to back up about a car length to a wider part of the road and instead insisted on folding his mirrors in and trying to squeeze past while we pushed into the hedgerow... And another instance where we're got stuck due to parked cars like in the video, and had to reverse back down the street and find another way out.

At my previous street, it was on street parking, as it was Victorian terraces. One lad used to park his BMW right at the corner of the junction and larger vehicles couldn't get around the corner, and this prevented an ambulance from entering the road once. I explained this to him when I next saw him, but he kept parking there. So I got a permanent marker and drew a cock 'n balls on his driver's side door. That did the trick.

Don't enter a yellow box junction unless your exit road is clear. What happens if you can't see the exit road? Would be an interesting legal challenge if anyone was ever fined for stopping in that box.

Look up the DoT guidance on box junctions. I suspect that one could challenge a fine/penalty on the basis that the council didn't follow the appropriate guidance...
@ianmason.
@ianmason. Жыл бұрын
@@colinprice712 I'll actually look at the Traffic Signs Manual and see what it says, but I wonder if that idea is so _fundamental_ to the very idea of a yellow box junction that the guidance _doesn't_ say "Make sure that all the exit points of a box are visible from the threshold of the box". It's like those workplaces rules you trip across and you _know_ that a rule exists especially because somebody did do the obvious "Nobody would do that, surely?" thing that the rule prohibits. Usually somebody called Gary, Nigel or Kevin for some reason known only to the gods. OK, checked it. _ "8.2.3. When designing the marking, authorities should take in account that drivers must be able to comply with the requirements of seeing that their exit is clear before entering the box. This will obviously impose limits on the dimensions of the box depending on individual site conditions." _ Looks like the writer had worked with enough Garys that they knew that they had to explicitly say it.
@tin2001

In the video instance, the obvious failure to stop at the red light is probably a far bigger concern than them not being able to see it was clear across the box.

05:39 - Why use the horn here Ashley? They could easily see you emerging. Was it a reprimand which you normally advise against?
@Madsstuff
@Madsstuff Жыл бұрын
Logic states that the red car went late and should really have given way when they saw Ashley. But the pressure of the yellow box probably urged them to rush getting out of the way. I would say, on that logic that horn was a fair use of alerting that driver of a potentially dangerous issue impending. In the quick thinking needed it's clear the red car was in the wrong and the horn, while "hasty" was also warranted to bring attention to a quickly closing gap. I don't think at all that was a reprimand. People do funny things when surprised or under pressure. Give the man a break.

Got a kid to park up on the left after driving a little loop, and a white panel van pulled up on the right just ahead (which was on a bend to the right). 6:46 You told the girl, "Hold back, clutch down" as she was turning into the side road where the van was partially blocking the road further up. Then you immediately gave her a bollocking for braking and holding back, telling her, "It wasn't right - we're stuck out in the junction! Move forward!". You told her to hold back while she was still out in the junction and then when she does hold back as you instructed, you contradict yourself and tell her to move forward! Poor girl, she does what you tell her to do and then gets a telling off for it. Sometimes you don't give clear instructions. What you should have said when she was still out in the junction, instead of, "Hold back, clutch down", was, "Enter the side road and stop short of the van, clutch down". Do you see the difference? Instead of telling her to hold back in the middle of the junction and then giving her a telling-off for doing what you told her, you would have got her to safely enter the side road and got her out of the junction.

The last "hit and run" I did was a 4x4 Chelsey tractor parked exactly like the first pair in the first clip. One of those spatial awareness things, but my 'senses' didn't think I was going to clear the gap, but it did think my left mirror would pass under the 4x4's. I even said, "Breath in everyone". I was only going walking pace with an oncoming queue of traffic weaving around parked cars it was going to be slow. Unfortunately, within about 2 inches of the mirror, my senses then said, "Ooops." and "Clunk". They clipped. Top of mind, underside of theirs. I checked my mirror and it hadn't even moved out of alignment. Checked the 4x4 mirror was still there and still "out", it was, so I drove on. Given that my car is red and theirs was black, I didn't leave any red paint on them as I took a nice thumb sized smudge of black plastic which came off with panel wipe. Stopping within 100 yards was going to bring a sleeply little town that happens to find itself on the most busy tourist, road trip routes in summer to a complete stand-still in both directions in stead of just one as it was. I carried on.

A sense of humour at the right time reinforces whatever point you are making. I don't know the psychology behind this but it is something that I discovered 40+ years ago. It would explain why some subjects/topics taught in School were either remembered or forgotten in later life. Delivery was the key factor. This applies to Driving Instruction and most other environments as well. Hope that makes sense.

There seems to be 3 things that need sorting out in your area I think Ashley. Number 1: potholes need repairing. The roads did look seriously damaged on some roads. Number 2: 4:53 that dangerous junction that you said cyclists and people get killed at needs to be looked at and maybe changed. Number 3: I think there needs to be some looks at your own Gandolf Corner, for some more safety.

I towed a vehicle last week for the safety of the public. Not because the vehicle that I removed was in a dangerous position, it was well onto the verge. The vehicle, a Ford FPR V8 Falcon, was being systematically stripped by thieves. They were parking on the 100kmph stretch of road, like this unlit, turning out their lights so as to not draw attentiontothemselves, and carrying out their act. They had no concept of the danger that parking on the dark road could have for them or other road users.

In answer to the question of if the Land Rover would pass an MOT: probubly not but as its a F suffix reg its likely registered as tax and MOT exempt. Though given the fact the chassis has clearly been substantially modified (proper 6x4 or 6x6 landys dont have a rear axle that looks like its off a caravan, I wonder if its braked?) and the front end and suspension is off a much later model it should probubly be on a Q plate having been SVA/IVA tested and would then be unlikely to be tax/MOT exempt unless it was modified 40 years ago.

My mother is a private hire driver and once when she was driving me to her home for a weekly visit (I never learnt to drive due to anxiety issues) she had a go at a pedestrian for not using a zebra crossing correctly, the pedestrian veered off the crossing on our side to got to the right of the right barrier. I told her that there is no law that says they can not do that and her response I think says it all when it comes to private hire drivers: "I am a taxi driver, I know better!". It's a false sense of superiority due to their job.

A VPN does nothing unless your sole interest is in watching content from sites that are not available in your country: At some point your data to/from the VPN providers servers for any not HTTPS access emerges on the internet un-encrypyted, it just happens to do it in a different place (perhaps mixed with other traffic) and unless someone has wire-tapped your connection at source (very illegal) getting access to your data is NOT as easy as VPN providers try to make out.

the last clip really winds me up as it is illegal to show the wrong indicator, so most people don't use indicators when turning of extremely last second. so if you are basically que jumping down the wrong side of the road, how aware are you something else isn't going to do the same infront of you? especially when several hundred feet from the junction in some instances, and sometimes not even visable to oncoming traffic like a junction just after the crest of a hill, or a blind bend. or wose little kids trying to cross the road between stationary traffic. you cannot see an adult behind a vehicle in most cases when the road is so cluttered with parked vehicles. that is why you would never find me overtaking stationary traffic to basically que jump for my junction until totally safe to do so like 10 feet from a junction. when you can clearly see traffic from all angles, if a blind junction I will wait for that extra 10 feet.

The Highway Code says "Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles)." Since it says "should" that means it isn't backed up by law (I've also checked the relevant regs and I can see the requirement to display them but not any restriction on displaying them when not required). It appears this officer was both unaware of the exemption for driving school vehicles (which seems difficult to believe, since no driving school vehicle ever has the L's covered - perhaps this vehicle didn't look like a driving school vehicle?) and unaware that it is only guidance anyway.

5:47 Is this the most useless yellow box? I believe that many road designers just sit in their little office and design the roads using little diagrams. This yellow box does make sense if your little diagram doesn't show the height of the bridge and does not show the height of the brick wall. The road designer probably met his KPI for the month and could tick the box and spin his work as a great success. Alternatively the design function is not a core function of the department and so was outsourced to the cheapest Indian design firm and the work was eventually done by the cheapest contractor on a laptop somewhere in India.
