Here's the thing, Ash himself is the opposite of a nerd. Really strong? Kinda dumb? Dedicates his entire life to a sport? Doesn't go to school until his 20s, and even when he's finally made it to school he still procrastinates on his homework and tries to get his pokemon to do it for him, all while the pokemon are shoving books in front of his face and shouting at him to read. Ash is a god damned JOCK.

A few things to note: Atem (i.e Yami Yugi) doesn’t have access to all 12,000 cards in the game as most of them were made decades after his time, or they’re from different universes. I’d say give him all the cards from the Duel Monsters and GX eras (OCG volume 1 to Light of Destruction) which is when he was alive (as well as his legacy support from the Bonds and DSOD movies), and maybe some of the 5Ds cards, the ones that aren’t related to Synchro summoning, as those could have been made early on in the timeline. Also, early Yugioh wasn’t about the card game, Atem literally has access to ancient Egyptian black magic AND by the end of the series he had access to all the millennium items so he could do stuff like mind control people, see the future, read people’s minds, freaking enter your mind palace and rearrange stuff for a mild form of brainwashing, project barriers to protect himself from harm, force push people, materialize the spirits of the monsters without the need of a Duel Disc/Arena (as shown by Bakura during Duelist Kingdom), fire ancient Egyptian laser beams, so on and so fort.

@@colmecolwag a shadow game is more of a formality than anything else. When a shadow game is used in the series it's usually by the antagonist to add stakes to the match such as with Marik. Marik could kill everyone there but actually can't because then he wouldn't get the 3 God cards he needs.

Hindsight analysis: Yami has withstood Winged Dragon of Ra's full fireblast attack in the Shadowrealm when Marik dueled Mai Valentine on Kaiba's battleblimp; that attack could literally raze entire civilizations to Ash, and the pharaoh endured it for like 12 seconds, meaning he is literally immortal even when possessing a teenager's body. In another scale of sheer power Yami defeated the embodiment of darkness by fusing all 3 Egyptian gods to create the Goddess of Light that wiped that dark spirit into nothingness instantaneously (the second it appeared the dark godlike entity just erased). He also fused the dragon knights Timeus, Critius, and Hermos after returning them into their original forms, fused them, and wiped out a giant serpent that LITERALLY had infinite attack points, and defeated the resurrected spirit of the Leviathan, the same one that wiped out and sunk the ancient city Atlantis (this is canon in their universe). Also based on multiple instances within the series, literally anyone with a millennium item (eye, scale, ring, rod, key, puzzle, necklace) can pull anyone else into the Shadow Realm (Pegasus, Bakura, Marik Ishtar); by that context, Yami could just teleport Ash to the Shadowrealm where monsters exist in their true form and kill humans, and just leave him there to die.

He passed out from that attack, and we don't have a good idea on how powerful it truly was. The Knights of Atlantis becoming the Knight of Destiny and destroying a monster with Infinite ATK also isn't contextually impressive, since many cards can perform monster destruction with ease. It's also something that power wise isn't exactly measurable. The leviathan alone didn't sink Atlantis, it was the result of the war between Dartz and his father that caused it to sink. The entire Waking the Dragons arc was filler and non-canon to the manga, which is the primary source they would pull the information from in the first place. The Shadow Realm is also a dub-only invention and wouldn't be taken into consideration. The Millennium Items can make monsters real and deal an unknown amount of damage, regardless of where they are.

Fun fact: Millennium items give powers that only millennium items holders can resist. Yugi can literally just kill a person (destroy their soul) as long as they don't have a millennium item. If they have an item, then he has to beat them in a children's card game first. He also has been shown to conjure force fields (fire protection against Panic) and of course can conjure monsters outside of duel conditions. Destiny draw/heart of the cards works to get him a card he needs to not lose right when he needs it. So even the "he has to draw it" argument is flawed

Yugi wouldn’t be able to resist Ash’s Aura though which could alter his mind. Ash’s aura was comparable to Sir Aaron who altered the minds of two entire army’s into peace. There is no evidence that Yugi could resist since it has nothing to do with the millennium items. And if you think that he could resist then I could argue that Ash has resisted mind control, vaporization, and being turned to stone through the power of friendship. It sounds stupid but he has done it to many times to not count. I think it’s pretty close since they both have monsters that can reach Godly levels of power and both have Hax that could cancel each other out. I think it comes down to who is a better battler in life or death situations. And that’s why I think Ash wins. He is a far better active battler than Yugi. Yugi is literally playing a turn based card game where as Ash has battled with multiple Pokémon while on the move and no turn based combat. And his Pokémon also seem to not follow the rules of Pokémon since his Pikachu was able to bet an Onix with and electric move. That is actually impossible to do so I think he is quite the strategic player.

@@zachspool Aura definitely is a unique ability that does make this complicated. But we have seen him get absolutely bodied by Sabrina which makes me hesitant to think Ash is resistant to mind control/psychic powers which Atem (Yami Yugi) actively used and resisted. Aura does seem to be a separate category from psychic attacks and so either character could potentially stomp out the gate if we assume neither can block the other's unique ability. Both characters have godly durability (literally both taking attacks from god/legendary creatures of their universe). I favor Yugi slightly in this match, because of the extra ability he does have, destiny draw, which is essentially canonized plot armor whereas Ash does lose and take damage to the point of passing out constantly (showing potentially lower stamina). That being said, my post was more just saying that the argument for Yugi in this fight is much better than that presented in the vid and it is much more of a toss up than one would assume from this vid with no background in the characters.

@@zachspool Also, throwing in monsters vs Pokemon throws in a crazy wrench in assessing the fight as there is no way to directly compare stats and abilities to Atk/Def/Effect, along with spells/traps not having a good pokemon equivalent (held items are way underpowered in comparison). That being said, Yugi does own the Gods of his universe while Ash sees/befriends but does not catch legendary Pokemon so they would not be a part of his arsenal, also slightly favoring Yugi in this one

I agree that it’s close but I would personally give ash the slight edge since as I said before he is more use to active battles that are more fight for your life and less turned based. At least you admit that it’s a good fight where as a lot of other count Ash out and say he gets stomped. Also I think they may have hinted that this fight is happening. They mention Liam doing reach for Yugi I believe but Liam wasn’t even on the cast I don’t think. I mean maybe he is researching for something else but it’s something to think about.

@@ez8924 Yes he can, Yami Yugi(pharaoh Atem), Yugi, and all other yugioh protagonists are capable of willing cards into existence by sheer willpower/magic/or hyper advanced science. You can see it more clearly with stuff like Yuma’s zexal forms which are shown capable of literally forming new cards, upgrading existing cards, and placing any card on top(destiny draw). Since Yugi is supposedly the most powerful of the yugioh main characters, he is scaled to each of them which means he can will any card he wants, and doesn’t even need to look at what he’s drawn to use it

There were some sorta real monster shenanagins near the end of the Oricalchos arc where they fight off random real shadow monsters with their hologram monsters without needing to have an actual duel over it though but its hard to scale to that. There was also some near the end of the series stuff where you got to see monsters fight a bit more, the ressurection of Zorc and Exodia getting in a weird kaiju battle with it, but its unclear if thats how this hypothetical battle would play out

So the duel disk has a holographic projector on the bottom that renders the cards but does not give them physical properties (because no way would that game survive if people were actually getting hurt) however as mentioned the millennium puzzle can make the game a shadow game that turns the holograms into physical manifestations of the monsters that were used in ancient times.

Yes Energy chain affected Pegasus's goons, and morphing jar killed them. So cards like Curse of aging, would basically age Ash's pokemon to the point of death.

They most likely wouldn’t work. It depends on the canon and what the cards actually say. Most cards in the game refer to specifically monsters and other cards. Ash and his Pokémon are also not bound by the rules of Yugioh. Even a shadow game wouldn’t work since Ash doesn’t play games and instead actually fights making it impossible to start a shadow game with him.

So, incorrect. Yugi IS friends with his monsters. His monsters have actively saved Yugi and Yami's lives on multiple occasions, and Yugi shows great respect for his monsters when they're his deck leader or anything. I think when you say Yugi is a bad person, you're specifically going with Season 0 Yugi, who was manipulated and shifted into a monster. But outside of that temporary thing, Yugi is actually a good guy. He's caring for his friends, and see's his deck as his heart and soul. He loves all his cards and puts his heart on all of them. So, that's my major grief with this whole thing.

Obelisk on his own is probably impossible for Ash and his Pokémon to fight. Can’t stop it from summoning, can’t target it with effects. And it can destroy all other creatures in the field. Slifer auto weakening monsters when they are summoned and destroying those that aren’t powerful is also pretty insane.

You're really underestimating the power of pokemon though...arceus was literally the creator of the universe and a god and some pokemon can control time and space and there's a pokemon for everything. Some pokemon have fire hotter than the sun and some pokemon can literally transform like ditto and mew. Some pokemon can copy stats, some pokemon have moves like power swap and guard swap, pokemon have the ability to lower attacks, lower speed, lower defence, put them to sleep, paralyze them, burn them, poison, induce confusion, etc...A ghost type pokemon with normalize ability and entrainment means that no attacks can hit them. Pokemon have the ability to use recovery and draining moves to heal themselves, pokemon can use conversion to change their own typing, pokemon can use trick and swap held items like sticky barb, toxic orb, flame orb. Not to mention when the opponent is burned their attack is lowered. Pokemon have the ability to use a substitute and avoid direct attacks, Pokemon even have shields/screens to halve damage and they can even protect with protect/kings shield/obstruct/baneful bunker. Pokemon can use hazards on the field, some pokemon just simply have broken abilities too like shedninja with wonder guard or shedninja with sturdy. Pokemon can use moves that cause flinch and prevent the opponent from moving that turn. And pokemon even have moves like spite which lower pp or moves like destiny bond and perish song that basically can ko opponents. Pokemon also have OHKO moves which are guarantee OHKO if it lands. Still not broken enough? pokemon can use copycat to copy opponents last move, they can use encore/disable and force opponents to either repeat last move or disable their last move. Still not broken enough? pokemon can use moves like counter which return double the damage. Pokemon can use strength sap to heal and sap the opponents strength, pokemon can freeze opponents, pokemon can even use evasion moves to boost their evasion so nothing can hit them, pokemon can lower opponents accuracy so their opponents moves always miss, pokemon can use moves that force the opponents to switch on the field so even if obelisk is summoned a move like roar or whirlwind will force them to swap monsters. ETC.....you're really underestimating pokemon especially since Ash has fought mythical and legendary pokemon before he's really strong.

A lot of the pokemon arguments are made using context from the games which ash does not rely on. Ash would win by cheating. Using this logic then we can use the OG Yu-Gi-Oh rules which you can have a deck as big as you want

Issue with yugi is pretty solvable In final arc, the one in egypt, they were literally summoning monsters out of stone tablets hidden in some tomb so there's a connection to how to summon them and make them real (as they were able to hurt final boss, Zorc, who was blowing up whole egypt at the time)

Important question that wasn't addressed: could a Yu-Gi-Oh monster be captured in a Poke Ball? (You can't catch another trainer's Pokemon, but Yugi isn't a trainer and hasn't captured the monsters in Poke Balls. Maybe they're captured in cards, but it sounds more like they get re-manifested based on the cards, at which point they might count as more like wild Pokemon, even if they listen to Yugi.)

No they can't. In pokemon lore every Pokemon's DNA can be found within mew. In one of the manga it's stated that all pokemon species could be classified as a singular species as they share a similar gene. Poke balls can't catch humans, according to pokemon lore pokemon and humans have the same common ancestor. There was a plot involving an alien invasion with aliens called the ultra beasts, the people of the pokemon world had to invent a whole new type of PokeBall to catch the ultra beasts.

I believe that it truly does come down to how versatile and powerful Yugi's set abilities are in comparison to Ash's. Like if we're doing a composite of both with them at their absolute strongest, Yugi's cards and monsters break the reality of how Pokemon is done. Like, absolutely. Yugi WILL have a counter in his deck for everything Ash could conceivably throw at him. Of course there's no guarantee he'll just have the card in hand when he needs it, but even his worst cards will still by him enough time to get what needs. Especially with the Heart of the Cards on his side.

Yes actually yugi does have a guarantee. The millennium puzzle grants him the concept of Destiny Draw, "the Heart of the Cards". If he's in a pinch, he'll draw the card he needs.

While saying it like that is very much a fair call-out, DB tends to be more thorough if its something that could turn the tides over other established rules. Machamp really didnt need gigantimax at all, while a later matchup like the Cloud vs Link gave way to the unholy epic abomination that was Amalgamation Link despite not compositing characters so much anymore, meaning they should have matched up whatever moveset had the best shot/winning combo. Amalgamation link really was the best way to find if any combination of things Link had could overcome a Cloud that didnt need materia to cast. Second there is the briefest mention that the way Ash and Pikachu do it is slightly different than the game so it is a case by case basis if it might raise a question or make a fight unfair. It has some internal consistency but i think that blurb might have come up differently if Goro was deemed even stronger than an oversized kaiju wild machamp. But 9/10 fights they do in the future may not utilize it depending on the matchup.
