An additional point I forgot to make in this video about the PVE & PVE server debate… - With Ashes being a sand park MMO (Hybrid of theme park and sand box) the vast majority of the content is player driven, usually PvPVE, the advantage of this approach is that players rely less on developer curated content to enjoy the game and many aspects of the game will be highly replay able due to the fact that the interactions between players IS the vast majority of the content… If you add PVE servers to a sand park MMO then players will burn through that content extremely quickly, the focus then becomes on the next Raid, Dungeon and PVE challenge to clear a few times and then you’re done and you unsub til next content update, devs would need to shift their focus to just pumping out raids to keep people subscribed, the game would shift from Sand Park to full theme park (basically what’s happened with New World) A lot of people clearly like PVE only theme park MMOs but Ashes of Creation was never designed to be one of those games, WoW and FF14 are already great for that kind of experience, It’s fine if this game isn’t for you, no game has to be for everyone, but changing core design pillars late into development to chase maximum popularity is a recipe for disaster, for many people the current design direction of Ashes is EXACTLY what they’ve been waiting for, let them have the game they’ve been dreaming about when we’ve already got great pure PvE experiences imo. Either way let’s be honest, everyone is going to try the game because the MMO genre is dead af and we don’t get many new releases to get excited about, maybe more PVE players enjoy the game that you’d expect despite the PVP, let’s wait and see…

I think you're absolutely right, there's no need for this elaborate debate yet. The developers have shown that they listen to the community and tweak the game accordingly, while staying true to their vision. If the current corruption system isn't sufficiently preventing excessive griefing, I can't imagine them not being open to discussion.

You're exactly right and hit the nail on the head. There are so many PvE players now deciding they will never play the game even without the Alpha 2 being out.... ...but I think many of those PvE players will be able to find a beautiful home in Ashes and I think alienating some players is not to be fretted over because regardless the game will stand or fall with TONS of MMO players based on how good it is as a PvX game.

So many people have been screaming about the PvP, but i've yet to hear a single well-reasoned argument based on community and player interaction. I've heard inumerable people say that open world dungeons won't be feasible because of griefers or PKers, but this completely ignores the fact that the Alliance system allows one alliance to have a PvP focused guild protect the dungeon while the PvE focused guild raids it. Likewise, a similar explanation can be given for every aspect of PvP in this game. If you're a PvE player who wants to enjoy AoC, find yourself a community to be part of that has PvP players willing to sit around keeping you safe. And trust me, they will. There are hundreds of PvP fiends who grind hundreds of hours each month in near-dead games hunting for people they can actually fight. If you tell them all they have to do is chill in a PvE resource area as a Purple tag, and they have free reign to roflstomp any other Purple or Red tag that comes near, they'll be like a child on Christmas. They don't give a rat's ass about your resources. Why would they kill you, a PvE player noot even worth the effort, when all these griefers and gankers are delivering themselves on a silver platter? That's not to say the PvP flagging system has no problems, it's incredibly abusable in certain situations, and I myself, along with many other long-time guild leaders in the community have been racking our brains for quite some time, trying to figure out how to suggest ways to improve the system so that it's not so abusable by large groups. Unfortunately, headway is slow, as a flagging system in and of itself is just a very old game concept. The corruption and combat systems they have are so old school that improving it without a massive change is incredibly difficult. Not because there's no room for improvement, but because it's already so rigid and inflexible in nature. In AoC's current state as it stands, Solo players will suffer immensely. Regardless of any benefits they could possibly give solo players, the entire game is too heavily dependent on player interaction and social hierarchies. This isn't to say there's no room for solo players, but it will be a MUCH more difficult game if you're playing solo. And THAT is where I see the most misunderstandings by people on PvPvE. Too many people account for small player groups in this game. But that's ludicrous. With guilds being between 30-300ish in size, and 4 guilds making up an Alliance, Alliances will be between 120-1200ish players in size. If one alliance locks down a castle and its surrounding areas, raising a node to metropolis, that's a solid 5% of the player population of the entire server having a massive base of operations with roughly 10-15 minutes of travel time in their zone of influence. That doesn't sound like much, but imagine hearing, as a solo or small group player, that the area you're trying to PvP camp in is controlled by an Alliance with 500+ players, of which at least 100 are on at any given time, and it will take them no more than 10 minutes to get to you at any given time the moment one of their players announces PvP combat in their Alliance Discord. You have no means of teleporting away, and all you can do is log off, if you're lucky. Large groups will run AoC. End of story. The size of the group will be a questionable situation. There's something to be said for a well-organized group of 500 going up against a mob of 1200 semi-organized players. But at the end of the day, these are numbers in the hundreds. HUNDREDS. That's not something solo or small group players get to have a voice in. This dynamic of low-mobility, areas of control, and zones of influence, for large groups of players, is what the map and combat structure of AoC was built for.

I love the video and I agree with all your opinions aside from your opinion on Lucky ghost not deserving getting the shit he's getting because the real reason people have a problem with him isn't because he has a different opinion, it's because he dishonestly try presenting "evidence" namely being a poll that was set up in such a way that it seems pretty damn clear that the intention was so he could dishonestly represent the numbers of the answers of the poll and throughout his entire video was talking about such a misrepresentation of the information we have about the PVP systems that it seems pretty damn clear especially since he made this a video on his channel in such a "you dont have ta listen to me but really you also do have to listen to me and make the game how i say it should be" that there's no other way to look at it than he's a dishonest prick and especially since he threw in a raid Shadow Legends at in the middle also was just scummy because it's an opinion piece or in other words it was his call to ashes of creation to at least as he claimed, try to save the game and yet he still was going to Market money on that shit? Especially given how dishonest and how much misrepresentation he did, it's so scummy because it seems clear that he specifically probably was being dishonest just so he could get a lot of eyes on the video and get a lot of Raid Shadow Legends sponsor money

AoC's approach with what I've decided to call "soft conflict" in almost all systems is really innovative. Balancing and tuning these new systems will undoubtedly require quite a bit of public testing time, but the potential of these ideas is higher than our current iterations. Its been so long since we had ANY true innovation in this genre that speculation on this before we get a few rounds of real testing is simply useless and would only be considered by the lowest denominator.

I think Steven coined the term "soft friction" in the past, but yeah that's the point! He doesn't want it to be like a hamster in a wheel and all you gotta do is just play a little longer and you are guaranteed something. Plus, the soft friction creates memorable moments and meaningful conflict. That's what we are wired for as humans at the end of the day. We want meaning in what we do.

Comparing this to the earlier playtests they did, this doesn't only look graphically better but also movement and physics wise like ten times better. When I first saw their combat preview I was like "hmm, seems like this is allods online in an alpha stage" the way the characters moved and casted etc. Now if I look at it, it actually looks stunning and it isn't even done nor is it polished at all. But seeing they are already this far in the game, makes me even more hyped for the release. Safe to say that this studio got what it takes to make a great game. We now just have to hope, that it is also a studio who knows how to run and maintain a happy and healthy community.

@US Patriot Unfortunately, this is a fairly common plight of early MMOs - if the project is running low on money then they have to balance the bad press of early release against the massive influx of cash a release generates. This affects almost every new MMO - I played both WOW and ESO at launch, and both were kinda a nightmare? You'd never know it now, as WOW is turning 20 and still tops in the MMO world (though I stopped playing at ninja pandas) and ESO has a vibrant community of thousands (I still play, but not as much as I once did)

I understand the arguments you present in favor of the PvP risk/reward model, it makes sense. But no matter how great this game is in all other respects, the presence of non-consensual PvP is going to keep a large part of the market away and turn this into a niche game, not a mainstream game. You say that ArcheAge died due to mismanagement, not PvP, and I would disagree and add that it was really both. Trino sucked, but me and all my friends left the game not because of Trino, but because we got tired of a system that rewarded griefing and allowed even members of our own faction to kills us for our loot. The joy of creating my first fishing boat was completely overcome by the constant boarding and stealing at sea. Screw that, we left that crap behind and never looked back. BDO isn't quite as bad because you can stop leveling at 50, still Lifeskill to your heart's content and NEVER have to worry about PvP. Not one of the big triple-A MMOs have non-consensual PvP, not WoW, not BDO, not ESO, not GW2, not FFXIV. These games all realiize that the vast majority of players want a game that is fun to play and doesn't CREATE anxiety. Yes, there are plenty of players who like that kind of stress and for them, this game will be fun. But I continue to believe that audience is small and gets smaller with every new attempt to solve the problem. Reputation systems have NEVER worked, not in UO, not in Albion Online, nowhere. The price to come clean is always worth it to the griefers and those who profit from PK'ing. So as much as I love what I see in this game, and I enjoy your coverage of it, I will probably pass if it remains as you describe. I get plenty of stress and anxiety IRL, I don't need it or want it in my games. There is a LOT you can do to create a Risk/Reward model that does not involve being killed by other players. Being killed by the environment is plenty of anxiety for me! As always, great video my friend. Thanks.

Personally I wont have time to do majority of the things available and will have to choose 1 or 2 things I sink my time into and I also hope that you can still enjoy what you want to do without having to take part in the things you have no interest in. They would have to make every single thing worth doing - which means creating every aspect of the game rewarding, engaging and fun to play. Which, as you can imagine, is a daunting responsibility, let alone hard to implement. I see features being rolled out and then fleshed out as issues arise.

If some can't be done because others are low and the demand is highly outweighed than supply, then prices for that skill will be high. I always do whatever I can make bank on, idc what it is. I enjoy merching and making bank in games. I find that enjoyable. I was back and forth rank 1 and 2 in the world for the cooking skill in Black Desert online for the first 3mo of release.. I ended up quitting the game because that game was a flat out wallet grab and it pissed me off that they specifically DESIGNED things to not work perfectly without purchasing things without MTX. If you wanted to play without MTX(LIKE ME) it was SO much more annoying. I didn't p2w at all. Only spent money on cosmetics.. but as I was saying, making bank and getting rich in games is fun, so people like me will be the ones doing things no one else is to take advantage of insane profits. Don't you worry! :D The only thing that could possibly stop that is that if the needed goods require a set amount of people to start the farming item/resource activity and there are no people around that want to.

For context me and my brother are PVP players and we enjoy it so much for any game we play but we like to play with our uncle and dad who are PVE players. Because of this there was never a time in any MMO we played, like WOW for example where we needed one another. Me and my brother would get PVP gear and our dad and uncle would be doing raids or crafting/gathering, a family divided, but with ashes i can see us having to help each other out to progress and i think that's what makes me so excited for Ashes to drop. There was an old browser game that no one here even heard the name of. In that game the best aspect of gather-refine-manufacture economy was that any resource (not gear) would drop on death outside of safe zones. The whole game was pretty much based around this concept with professions like miners, marauders (aka gopniks), mercs, traders among others. Each profession giving a bonus to its respective focus (like extra resources drop for miners or extra hauling capacity for traders). This made even the basic resources quite valuable - especially those far away from safe zones - the endorfine boost you got from safely bringing back a big haul to the safe zone was nothing like you can ever get from any modern MMO. Add to that player-created (with resources) shops and industries and you get a completely player-run economy. God what a thrill it was, I really miss the old-school MMOs, one can only wish something like that would one day be created on modern game engine

My favorite thing about Ashes is seeing the greed of the WoW and FF14 fanbase and the contrast in "PvE" players and "PvX" players. Seem like most conversations concerning ashes go exactly like this "I have played MMO's for 20+ years and I'm very worried about the future of Ashes, I WANT the game to succeed! but it will fail if it still allows PvP in the open world" Meanwhile the majority of PvX players are all over the top incredibly excited and beyond grateful for seeing their dream game coming to fruition, their most comment comments are "Thank you SO MUCH Steven for standing your ground and making YOUR vision a reality" it's funny how we're all seeing our dream game come to life and WoW or FF14 players just seem to keep asking for WoW 2 or FF14-2. It's fun to watch the "Less Toxic" communities of PVE players trying to force a game being made out of sheer passion, into something that THEY want instead of just saying "Too bad it's not for me, have fun guys!" there are so many PVE theme park MMO's out there that are tailor made for this type of player, but the closest we've ever come is Black Desert, Lineage 2 and Archeage. We can have this one, you guys will get your next gen WoW 2 games, they ARE coming.

hmm i do think open pvp has great value , a lot of great moments in L2 were due to the open pvp and i totally stand by that. however from my experience playing over multiple expansions is that the bad and unfun moments heavily outwheight the good ones. it always feel like the ppl that defend open flag systems super hard only have in mind the best case scenario experience and hardly take into consideration the other side. i've played l2 since i was 8yo and have been both the super noob that died to anyone to a relatively experienced player that could hold my own shit(never incredibly good tho). i only got through the start cause i had my brothers playing with me and everyone else in the "pc bang" also played l2 only. Even still, my experience is a very lucky and fortunate one compared to the average player that got into the game. Even tho Ashes is NOT lineage 2 and usually its very hard to compare system in different games, i feel like the flaggin system is close enough that comparison has some value, as long as u keep in mind that it IS a comparison. I had the same reaction to the PvP debate. PvE servers would be a big mistake. I think PvE players are worried about having their (often limited) time wasted. However, I am hopeful that there will be many alternative gameplay goals so that PvE players do not feel the usual pressure to progress at optimal speed. For example, if you want to minimize the risk of PvP, focus on processing raw materials or crafting rather than the gathering in the open world. Also, the bounty system should function to limit the profitability of player killing. I know there is always potential for players to abuse systems for the sake of griefing, but let's give developers a chance to address this before we sound the alarm.

I remember three guys who had a weekly show dedicated to this game. Years ago. After maybe 1.5 years or so they became increasingly frustrated by a perceived lack of progress and their show eventually died. The show was called "From the Ashes". One of the guys was a coder working for a bank. Another was an aspiring game developer. I think they eventually left KZbin. Of the three only one still had a channel the last time I checked maybe a year ago. They were the first group to focus on this game, I think. What I remember most was them raving about the enormous progress made the first six months of the game development. Then reality set in. And the game had to switch to a different engine entirely because the original just could not do the job. I think that was about the point that their weekly show died. That was a dark period in the game's history. Their channel was called "The Dungeon Crawler Network". That channel still exists but the three guys who posted weekly about Ashes are no longer there, or were not the last I checked. Maybe the channel now focuses on Elder Scrolls Online but it has not even posted a video at all for three months.

@@meltsjavi Sure. In the short term. But to make money you need to make the ingame purchases more enticing to the player. This is when paytowin items creep in and "conveniance" items such as bag slots and bank expansions, loot pets etc. I fully agree the barrier of entry is free. The actual ratio of players buying anything however is not. Every f2p mmorpg, literally EVERY freetoplay mmo has one way or another had an agregipus monetary practice to ACTUALLY make money. @@ashj1770 In the short term? based on what?f2p model has worked wonders for fornite, league, valorant and these games will be here for a while. As for pay2win mmos, this is because a lot of mmos cater to asian audiences, and they dont mind pay 2 win. It should also be said that just because f2p companies do this, doesnt mean that its actually effective. Riot understands more than other companies that your playerbase is valuable, and that for long term profit, youll need to make short term cuts. Riot could make a BUNCH of money by monetizing league, but that may make the game die. However riot can keep the game free and alive, and in the long term make so much more money than any other company. Most companies dont last a long time and most games die. This is why some companies feel the need to monetize quickly (you see this a lot in mobile games) riot does not have this problem. So saying that f2p only works short term is actually the opposite, f2p games actually have longevity, IF the monetization system is done right. Which riot have shown to be able to handle. However I do understand your concerns, ultimately we will have to see how riots monetization of its mmo will play out in order to actually make a judgement.

My mindset here is instead of the forcing players into Perma PvP which is going to scare away 99% of MMO-Players, do Positive Reinforcement and entice them to chose it themselves. And have both the Caravan and any Boat Adventure always be in that Channel. If anything, another idea I had was to have the Caravans a bit like in BDO too. Where they just go from town to town all the time even without anyone ordering them, with a side-quest where any guard accompanying it, gets some basic payout. Then if you wanna send your own stuff with the caravan you get the option to increase that reward to entice more people. I think this would lead into some interesting interactions where Bandit Players could check the Guard reward to find Caravans that might have some interesting loot in them while also allowing Merchant Players to do some mind games where they increase the Guard Pay for caravans without loot to trick the bandits or just try to get away for minimum pay and put their stuff into a badly guarded caravan.

There is no game I have been as excited about, as this. Maybe WoW back in beta 20 years ago, but no.. this is how I dreamt MMOS would be as a kid in the 90s. I CAN NOT WAIT! Thank you for these videos, in addition to Intrepids own coverage, its fantastic to follow the development of this unique and ambitious project.

I'm much more of a PvE kind of guy, but I agree that separate PvP and PvE worlds would be a bad idea. Personally, I like what I have seen and heard from AoC, and I will happily accept the PvP challenge in this one.

Great video thank you, I actually really enjoyed the darkzone in the division; and I have traditonally been someone who prefers co-op / pve content; but I look back at a game like Rakion, which I loved so much and while it had pve... it was all about the pvp; excited to hear more about the game.

This game looks incredible. Reminds me of WoW vanilla in its prime! Honestly, if this game comes to consoles then maybe it not just become among the top 3 MMOs but might also begin a new trend of MMO games in the same sense WoW did.

I hope exploration really is random and worth your time, as in even a lv 1 player could get lucky if they are willing to explore every nuck and cranny in the world. And I hope this World is truly random, as in things spawn in completely random places, This is something I've always wanted from an MMO.

Went into watching this video like "oh FFS, here we go again", but I was actually quite surprised. Then I watched the bit with the attacks on the other content creator... Smart idea with the ad spot, mad respect for that, such a great idea; get some revenue from the tears of salty sooks. Commenting for algo too; Looking forward to a life update too, btw; Maybe new goals for the new year coming?
