A warning: last time I played I was very lucky (during the ~pandemic) & got a ton of free levelling content to add to the few expansions I had. Seek those bargains if they still exist *or you will pay a LOT for Lotro.* "Stingy" is correct. If you want a good cheaper MMO, go Guild Wars 2 &/or Star Wars the Old Republic. A one-month one-time SWTOR sub opens a lot of great gaming. KoTOR3 w chat and an AH basically. *As for GW2, it's the best free game.* Then 20 gets you 2 huge xpacs & after that it's about 25 a year. Or you can go hog in the cash shop 8) If you get good at the economy the cash shop is pretty much free though. Absolutely play through the Shire & beyond in the free Lotro though. It truly is a special game.

It does a brilliant job of making you heroic, without being THE hero. Well said. It even weaves your character into the main quest without making you interfere. There's a quest at Rivendell where you just... go for a short stroll with Frodo. It's a small gesture from you, as the player, but it means something to Frodo. It's a brief escape from the horrors he's facing.

I enjoyed "fixing" the in-game problems the most: un-stucking characters, dealing with unfair players in battlegrounds... :p, triggering boss loots, renaming weapons and character names and more. Many years ago I was questing in Caras Galadhon, and there's a quest where you have to light some lanterns along a pathway. I for the life of me couldn't figure out how to light them, and figured the quest was bugged. I submitted a ticket and within a 5-10 mins a gamemaster contacted me and appeared seemingly out of thin air. I can't remember what either of us said, but he/she was friendly enough, and proceeded to light all lanterns for me, and sent me along my merry way. Fast forward like 8 or so years, and I come to realize the quest is only able to be finished during nightfall, hence why I couldn't light the lanterns, haha. Yet they were still nice enough to light them instead of just saying your missing something or did something wrong, figure it out.

There aren't that many other MMOs with that feature. The only other 2 MMOs I know of with that is like are GW1 I think, been a long time so not sure on that one. But the other, City of Heroes, 100% has that ability, where you can pick both the Difficulty of enemies compared to yourself. Up to 3 levels higher (Anything higher and you out right can't even touch it or do damage) But also able to set how many enemies spawn. When Solo, a 'Group' of enemies might be 2-3 enemies. The max amount of people in a group is 8 and can be like 10 enemies in a group. So you can set your personal difficulty, (And will be the group difficulty if your the leader), to be as easy, or hard, as needed for your class and playstyle.

I stumbled across LOTRO during open beta, having never played an MMO before, and was instantly hooked. I played hard core for a couple years and then casually on an off for the last 17 years. I was so active with the social world I made several friendships that lasted years with people that lived thousands of miles away and made arrangments to meet them in person. The game attracts my kind of people. I hope they can keep it going for many many more years to come. It feels like coming home whenever I start it back up. I agree with taking it slow. I got the max level back when it was 50 then 60 but since then I have taken my time. I'm still not at max level with my main character and I am ok with that. I play the most during the seasonal festivals, I find doing their festival questing so cozy and relaxing. I love waking through bree and coming across 30 people doing a music festival or stumbling across a theater rehearsal at the festival ground. This year I have been slowly going through the Rohan content and I'm still loving it. I hope they can keep it going for many many more years to come. After loving LOTRO I tried many many other MMO's but none have brought me back time and time again like LOTRO.

It does not have a large player base, but the folks who play are extremely helpful and kind. The one thing you notice is that players will watch you in combat, taking time out of questing to ensure that you win your fight etc. Its a very small thing, but speaks to the strength of the community.

I keep trying to get my friends to play, but most of them are too busy with new games that are coming out. Even if they could just make it through the lone lands, I would be happy. Garth Agarwen is one of my favorite early game areas. It's intense with an insane amount of lore and a great story! And literally just outside of bree. I would say the player character is more important in the game than just a common soldier. In fact, they had to come up with a good reason for the character to NOT do with the fellowship. Size and needing us to remain behind to cover their tracks and deal with Angmar. From this point, I see the player as the unsung hero/nameless face of the one(s) who behind the scenes dealt with all the roadblocks and threats seeking to stop the Company from their goals. Galadriel even comments on our peculiar fate within the world. We are to the entire Fellowship and then all of Middle Earth as Sam Wise was to Frodo.

DDO is so old that it has a worse UI problem and frustrating group mechanics. When I played LOTRO I was floored by how incredible Middle Earth is represented. There is an immersion that is constant in the game. Other than EVE Online, I have never played another game that I could just travel around the world for hours and not get frustrated or bored. I took another trip to LOTRO two months ago and got stuck. I played it for a few years in Relaese and then tried a few other MMOs. What can I say, LOTRO is one of the best MMO's out there, the graphics even though they are getting on in years are still some of the best I have seen in an MMO. Every single detail, the design of the different areas, the atmosphere that this old MMO brings with it, I have never experienced this in any MMO. There is one more MMO, The Secret World by Funcom, which also has a unique atmosphere, but that's another story. What I like best is that LOTRO slows you down, you sit down and play it, but not in order to reach the end content as quickly as possible. LOTRO is played for the story, exploring every corner, RP is still omnipresent etc. and the community is one of the nicest there is. LOTRO will outlast some newer MMOs and this old MMO deserves it.🙂

I tried this out briefly a couple years ago, choosing a Dwarve as my character and wasn't impressed by the standard MMO action bar, the ancient UI, or the slow pace of the first areas. Admittedly I was playing it like any of the other MMOs that I've played and dropped, I wasn't playing it like a journey, and maybe that's where I fell short. I'm a Runescape player, I've been playing that since 2006 and up until the Wilderness(PVP) was scrapped I had run around Gielenor interacting with every NPC I could, seeing the sights, reading lore, doing quests, interacting with players etc. For an hour every day after school I was on a journey(library computers) and those journeys led to amazing encounters I still fondly reminisce about to this day. So I'm redownloading LOTRO right now and I'm going to take it slow, i'm going to enjoy the sights, and I'm going to explore the world of my favorite fantasy setting hoping to find myself in an unexpected journey. Thanks for the video. Wish me luck :)

A fitting and comprehensive tribute to a game I thoroughly enjoyed in ways that are now unique in the genre. Well done! There were itches though that, for me, it could never scratch. The people however, the community, I'll never forget. It was a good time.

Correction: Some things can't be scaled, but most things can. You can set the scale of HUD elements at the bottom of the UI settings panel in the settings. At 1440p I recommend 1.25. You can also set the font sizes in the chat window in the chat settings. For both quest dialogs and the quest text in the quest log, at the bottom of the window there will be up and down arrows by an Aa icon that can be used to change the font size. You can also toggle the ability to re-arrange hud elements by pressing ctrl+\

I haven’t played it for 14 years. What I remember was that some quests required a small fellowship and it was so hard to find players. I spent days trying to find players when lvling. The good thing I remember was my kinship run by Whitedoom, he was a great leader. The lore was amazing as well. I wonder how I will feel about the aged graphics today. Maybe I should give it a new chance.

I used to play LOTRO back in the day. I leveled most of the classes but my main character was the Warden. The level cap was L75. As a gaming vet with tons of experiences in MMO, RPGs, etc., LOTRO is definitely one of the best MMO experiences/memories that I ever had. It's F2P & yes you can have the ability to earn premium currencies! If only we have more than 24 hours =) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

One thing I like is how characters weave in and out of your own story. Like Sara Oakheart in the early story, the stories are long-term, and it encourages you to READ the actual quest stories - not all, but most.

Now if they could just overhaul the absolutely horrible UI that people have been complaining about for yeeears... You cannot play the game at higher resolutions, as the UI scaling doesn't do its job properly and too many UI elements don't scale and end up tiny. I also think the level cap needs to shrink. Not necessarily make it take less time to reach max level, but just the number. 150 feels overbloated and levels don't feel impactful.

I've played LOTRO for years, probably more than any other game. Aside from buying the monthly sub once to get the massive quality of life bonuses, I've never purchased anything, yet I was able to play all the content by gaining LOTRO points leveling multiple characters. I don't think any MMORPG out there rewards your dedication playing their game as LOTRO does. There's so many things to do, and so many easter eggs to discover just exploring the game. I don't think that I could do it all in a lifetime. Yet I agree with the issues raised above, especially regarding lag. It is especially noticeable in Rohan, with extreme rubberbanding if using the horses there. All in all, many systems are outdated or in great need of a revamp. Yet, I enjoyed LOTRO so much I can't help recommending it.

Good stuff! I hope to see more videos from you. You're passionate and your editing is peak! Allow me to yap for a moment. "It's the journey, not the destination" is an old saying and it's very accurate for lotro. But for the love of Eru make that journey. If you've played for hundreds of hours and still haven't seen what lies outside of Bree, you don't know what you're missing. Lotro's community -and this applies to other MMOs also- is not one fixed entity. In other words there is no "one" community. I want people to understand that the playerbase is way more diverse and engaged than what is often seen from the surface. And the range of players and activities the game has can't possibly be covered in one video. But what this video does cover, it covers pretty well Shout out to my boys Nenaras and Aranarion. You made the cut! Mike Wazowski sends his regards! :D

I've been playing Lotro since the beginning and just being in the game is already a joy, anyway I would improve the animations, it's been a long time and they look very clunky, and also make the combat a little less static. I would also explore introducing the dark classes, they are also part of the history of Middle Earth...
