Close-quarter fighting is a key element in Ashihara Karate. It allows you to better control the opponent as opposed to fighting him at a distance. Moving in (early) as soon as the opponent attacks also disrupts his momentum, thus allowing your counter-techniques to be delivered with minimal resistance by him.

Nope, karate has grappling and throws, if you research more you would find that the "karate punch" to intended to be a "grab, pull and throw" move
