A rooming house/intentional community I formerly lived in has a 30+ year tradition, where every year a different theme is chosen and the front porch is decorated accordingly (adding temporary walls if needed, which it usually is). THEN on the city's official Trick-or-Treat day (the Saturday in October closest to Halloween, not Halloween itself), house members and friends dress up along that theme and do some fast but entertaining improvisation to give the candy away. They don't just _give_ it, you see, the kids have to do something to earn it. On the X-Men set, kids would be "scanned" for mutant powers on a "Cerebro" that included plasma globes. Lord of the Rings, go to the Prancing Pony, get a (plastic party favor) ring, then give it to either Gandalf or Saruman for your reward (light or dark chocolate), etc. Other themes used include the Wild West, the French Revolution, Ancient Egypt, Golden Compass, Star Wars, Night at the Museum, etc.

This event is popular; on a SLOW year, they give away 500+ pcs of candy. FULL SIZE candy, not the tiny Halloween bites. Didn't happen last year because C19, and looks like it won't happen this year, but hopefully the pandemic will subside enough for next year to go on.

My co-worker said she bought a bag of assorted halloween chocolate bars to eat while watching tv but then she thought something felt strange and looked at it and there were maggots inside, and then another co-worker said she had the same experience eating a granola bar.
