I think you forgot the biggest reason people portrayed her as a mouse. Many people criticized the new character design not being faithful to the old one, but her old design has some BIG old ears. I mean some real Dumbo flappers. So I think the mouse thing is a reference to the ears.

One thing I will add. I don't remember Ashley requiring that many green herbs in the original game, and I played it through very recently. Her AI's good at following orders and sticking behind you so you don't accidentally shoot her. And the enemies are trying to kidnap her rather than kill her.

honestly i found her easier to manage in the orginal than in the remake . in the orginal you could stick her in place or stuff her in a box and clear out the area. in the remake she's glued to your hip putting her in danger more often sure she doesn't take damage but one hit and she's vulnerable and a second one and she's dead meaning that you constantly be having to stop what your doing to help ashley back to her feet.

Yeah, her old AI is pretty intuitive and it was rare the moments in which I accidentally hit her due to her just ducking the second you turn around to point behind you and staying put if you ordered her to do so. When the place was swarming (specially in the castle later on) I would easily make her squeeze into a corner turn my back on her and start cleaning the room that way while keeping her safe.
