I've literally have 4 weeks left of LPN school. I'm not trying to discourage but encourage anyone who's reading this. I started January 6, 2016 it started off fast paced, intense, and tough. In the summer of 2016, I failed adult Med Serge. While taking Mental and Maternal with clinical and theory. I was very discourage. I don't know if all schools apply, but I had only one attempt to fail, no other options. With God and an awesome support system, I didn't give up I continued into fall semester passing with B in Med Serge. I say that because it was a breeze all of the material was clear and comprehending. January 2017 I started my Spring semester. During spring break I've been keeping myself ahead of the game. Rewinding back a little I completed my clinicals a month early by sacrificing to do 24 hours a week instead of 12 by asking my clinical instructor to do this. (it's good to communicate with your teachers and clinical instructor). I literally have 4 weeks left of school reality is setting in and I'm leaning and depending on God to get me through this. Phillipians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. This is my motto. Nursing school is not easy but stay focused, dodge negativity, and surround yourself with others in positivity. You will make friends and it's good to. You all will need each other (trust me). I'm praying for all of you. Step out on faith. I pray God give you favor with whoever you encounter with on this journey. You will pass, you will succeed, you will become a nurse!

Getting all As= having no life simple as that. I got all As through nursing school as well but I sacrificed a lot of fun. While my friends in the class were hanging out after an exam to de-load, I was back in the library already studying for the next exam, it simply comes down to how bad you want it.

Nursing school is hard, because there is no consistency! Classes sometimes teach contradicting information and no two professors have the same expectations. I have to start from scratch each semester with my study habits. Not to mention lectures are unorthodox and cover 1% of whats going to be on the test. Nursing is more of an art than a science, which makes it extremely difficult if you are primarily a left brained individual. NCLEX requires both sides of your brain and even then some professors write poor NCLEX style questions that lack context and have questionable rationales. I was 4.0 student before nursing school and it makes me mad when people say they get straight A's in nursing school as if it is normal. It is NOT normal, it is exceptional, if not impossible depending on the program. The margin for an A at my school is razor thin. One B on a test or on a few quizzes and that A is gone forever. Sometimes your best is a B and that is alright.

I am feeling the same way, I really feel like it is another language. I was never a 4.0 student, but I am used to the concept of working hard, you get good grades. Not in nursing, it feels more arbitrary than anything I have ever done before.

AtomicWrangler86 I completely agree with you. I am in the BSN program at a private university in my state. It's a 4 year program or you can get your RN in two years. It is incredibly difficult, as is any nursing school but I have had advisors and profs alike tell me that it is almost impossible to get all A's at our school and that I shouldn't strive for them either. My program just focuses on passing, but if you can do that with A's...well done.

AtomicWrangler86 this is so true. I totally feel you when you say I have to start from scratch with new class and new professors because no 2 professors are the same. I also hate that to do well in nursing school is not how well you perform on clinical setting but how well you take your exams. I'm in my last semester of my program and quizzes/exams are never consistent...

AtomicWrangler86 that's fine but some people also want to become an NP or a nurse anesthetist and you need a high GPA for that.
@AtomicWrangler86
@AtomicWrangler86 7 жыл бұрын
kayciable not necessarily. The NP and CRNA programs are competitive, but straight A's are definitely not required! GPA is not looked at alone. Recommendations and GRE scores carry a lot of weight. My own professors even told me not to kill myself trying to get straight A's.

Along the lines of procrastinating.....I used to NOT be a good student earlier in my life. I KNOW how NOT to get good grades, and if I find THOSE habits creeping in - I SQUASH them! Ex: I used to say, "Oh, I just finished a test - I'll reward myself with a day off of studying." (this would turn into 2, and 3, and 4 until it's a day or two before the NEXT test). NOW.. the 4.0 student in me is like, "GOOD JOB! Now IMMEDIATELY get going on the next!" >>>>>>> I have a pattern of studying: day one - vocab and making my flash cards (I prefer to draw out/color or write out my flash cards and NOT use pre-made cards. There is memory-POWER when pen is put to paper!!) day two and three - chapter reading and notes, day four - clean-up notes, adding any extra points mentioned in ALL of the added resources I have found and on the lab models (Use YOU TUBE as a major resource. Find other professors' videos on that topic. You might find the perfect professor from the other side of the country who explains things PERFECTLY for you - THEY"LL be your ace in the hole!!) plus any and all online assignments day five - turning the resources into mini tests to take, day six - practice with friends (whether they are better students than you or struggling students - you can get something from the styles of others... if nothing more than repeating the facts while you tutor them) - once more to the online/lab models if possible; day 7 arrive early to the AREA of the class (so you don't have to worry about not getting there in time) but not into the "other student zone". AVOID CHIT CHAT that can be distracting, but instead - - flash cards until the last minute!! THEN...ace the test!! (Grab a lunch with those you avoided before the test...and then? START AGAIN with the next section!!)

+Mc Kenna Another point on getting an A - LISTEN to your professor during that boring first day as they explain their syllabus and grading guidelines. If they say, "I don't accept late work." BELIEVE THEM!!! (Can't tell you how many fools I see TRYING to convince the prof that she/he HAS to accept their late work because of this or that lame excuse... and the lies? You just have to laugh if you think they are going to work...don't you think they've heard them all before?) IF you mis-read the syllabus and something went wrong....TURN IT IN ANYWAY, with a contrite note or immediate call/email about how you KNOW you made a mistake but you wanted to do the work anyway - then RE-DO the work correctly and show it to the prof for their approval of your work - NOT for a grade change. "Prof - I know I screwed up, but being that the point is to learn, I did it over again. Could you please look this over and let me know if I am now on the right track?" IT GOES A LONG WAY... networking, references, etc.!!

Hello, After watching this video I agree with you 100% . I'm currently in nursing school and this is my second go round, I'm not proud of it as well as I am not ashamed of it. But procrastination was my problem, I've honestly learned my lesson after settling for C's and once I took the final I didn't make the grade that was required for me to pass the course. Now I'm currently making 90% or above on all my test. What I have done different this time is I made school my first priority, and yes I agree I study material EVERY single day. If I miss a day of studying , I'll feel terrible. The more you study the more you'll understand it. It may seem like it's a bit much to study everyday but you can do it! Thanks for the wonderful videos!

I'm currently in nursing school. Yes, I try my best to get good grades. However, some of my biggest teaching points have come from when I DIDN'T get something right and got clarification on it. Yes - as nursing students you need to hold yourself accountable. But I don't see getting straight A's as the end-all, be-all for my experience during school. What matters to me is that I try my best and seek clarification when needed. For anyone on their way into a nursing program, I would recommend seeking out a nursing technician position at a nearby hospital. This has been incredibly valuable for me because I'm able to apply my theory knowledge in a clinical setting on a med/surg/tele unit. I also hope that those students who are not "perfect" are able to be resilient and pick themselves up when they don't do as well as they expected on an exam. Just because you don't get an A does not mean you won't make a fine nurse someday!

I am going into my second year /third semester of nursing school and these are the best tips and words of advice I have to pass on (hope this helps new students coming behind me). * spend time BEFORE class starts working on setting up a calendar/planner (not a cutsey planner that needs hours each week to look picture perfect, but a truly pratical calendar). At the start of one semester I thought I will set up the calendar after a little bit... Very bad idea! After a little bit, I had no time to be dealing with setting up a calendar or a planner correctly. So that whole semester I was feeling the consequences of not being totally organized. I know some nursing schools don't give out their information until a day or so before (what an idiotic idea some of these schools have), but the moment they put out the syllabus... Start making your calendar. * as much as you listen to videos and you hear them say it, you don't understand how different nursing school is than traditional college classes until you get there. What used to work for getting you A's in pre-reqs does not necessarily work in nursing school. It's a totally different animal. It's a totally different way of thinking. But even so... You have absolutely no time to sit around and whine that it's tough or that you haven't found your groove yet. Forget all about that! Just start working as hard as you can. (You can change to a different style of studying later if one is not working for you. It's the STARTING that is the most important!) I can't tell you how many students I have met (and somewhat ... that includes myself) that were stunned into complacency because they didn't know how to handle nursing school at the beginning. Just. Start. Working. And if at some point you find yourself saying, " oh well I didn't get to that concept/condition/etc" .... Or... "I'll catch up with that in the next couple weeks." You are already in trouble because you will have no time ( or way TOO small time) in nursing school to "catch up" with what you missed. *STAY ORGANIZED!!!!!! Repeat, STAY ORGANIZED!!!!!! After you are finished with a unit, gather everything you have for that unit (handouts, power points, printouts, spiral notebooks filled with notes, flashcards, etc), mark them clearly with the name of the unit and the class name, and keep them in a specific location that you can find later. If it takes having a small shipping box or container where you need to fit everything... get it!! I can't tell you how many students scramble to redo flashcards, notes, and study sessions that they already did but once again need to do from the start right before the finals. It's crazy and you absolutely don't have the time. A little bit of effort in organizing yourself before you move on to the next unit will save you hours of time later. Not only at finals, but also before the NCLEX exam. * Due dates and deadlines are NOT A JOKE!!!!!! Think of what you're going into ... Nursing. Everything about nursing is on a strict time schedule. Nursing school is just getting you used to that. If you have a patient who needs to get preoperative medications, they need to get it at a specific time. Their body and the surgeon don't care that you were busy at that time /had a tough night the night before / couldn't find your research / broke up with your significant other / pet passed away, etc.. All that matters is that you get everything in by that due date and at that precise time. This includes getting to class or clinicals on time. Teachers and supervisors are not kidding when they tell you what time everything starts at. You will find yourself locked out of classrooms and made to leave clinicals if you are not there on time. It doesn't matter what happened before... You must be there on time. A brief story: I would leave my house 3 times earlier then the time it would take me to travel to my clinical location. one morning I woke up to find that I had a flat tire. I texted and called to tell people I will be a little bit late. I even texted a picture of the flat tire. I changed the tire and managed to get to clinicals less than 5 minutes late... And I was docked points, I was written up, I was lectured that I should have left the house earlier, etc etc. For less than 5 minutes... That's trouble you don't want to have. When it comes to turning in papers and assignments, even a few minutes late, you will be docked for a whole day. One day there was students in the hallway in tears and shouting how unfair it was to be docked points or to even be asked to meet deadlines. When you think about it, it's ridiculous that anyone should complain. Someday a patient's life is going to rest upon you knowing that you must meet deadlines. School is just getting ready for that. * Take every point, in each class, seriously. Don't start telling yourself, "oh, it doesn't matter. It's only worth 10 points." Those same 10 points are what is going to make the difference between one grade and the next at the end. It might even be the difference between passing and failing. You don't want to be in a situation at the end of the semester where those "insignificant" 10 points (that you blew off within the first couple weeks) now stand between you and feeling confident that you're going to make it later on. That extra stress is going to do you in later on. * This is something that came to me after I had gotten a much lower score than I believed I should have on one of my first med=surg tests. Let's take the example of acute pancreatitis. You may know what acute pancreatitis is, and if somebody said to you, "tell me about acute pancreatitis." you might be able to recite an entire research paper on the topic. But in nursing school, and in nursing, people are not going to come up to you and say, "tell me about acute pancreatitis". No patient is going to burst through the door and say, "Nurse! Help me! I have acute pancreatitis! NOW what are you going to do about it???" No. They are going to come to you with various stories, symptoms, signs, and issues. It's up to you to be able to put that all together and whittle down the choices until you come to the realization of acute pancreatitis. So if you are only memorizing all the signs and symptoms of acute pancreatitis and all the treatments and all the interventions once you have been given the title of the condition, and yet not thinking about it in reverse, you aren't studying in every direction that you need as a nurse. An example of studying in reverse might be that you first imagine a patient coming to you and saying they have pain in a specific quadrant of the abdomen. You first need to know all of the different issues that may cause pain in that quadrant. And THEN you start to whittle down your choices. Also, there are many, many, many, many, many conditions that have nausea and vomiting as symptoms. Though you need to know that that's a possibility, is that what you're going to spend the majority of your study time focusing on? No. Not necessarily. You want to make a focus your diagnostic studying the signs/symptoms that makes that condition different. As a ridiculous example, if there is only one or only two conditions that would cause a person to break out and green dots on their forehead... THAT is the main direction where more of your focus should be. Anything that can help you to whittle down your choices even further is what is necessary to focus on * Lastly, if you understand Anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology dot-dot-dot then understanding nursing is so much easier. it is incredibly difficult to come up with a care plan for a patient if you don't understand what the disease is doing to the body. As a random and simple example, if you understand that a condition may cause aspiration upon feeding, then it's just second nature to understand that when they are being fed they need to sit up. Don't be one of those nursing students who just memorizes interventions without understanding how every piece of the puzzle fits together. Those folks are using up too much mental capacity in trying to just understand random facts. Once you understand how a condition is making the body react then most of the interventions just make common sense. This is not to minimize how important or how tough nursing is... It's just easier if you work in a logical manner. I hope these tips help someone. I wish that I would have known or understood all of them from the beginning... But some of them I had to learn the hard way.

I'm so happy I found this video. I just finished my first semester of nursing school with a 3.0 GPA and I struggled really hard with Anatomy and Physiology. But what you say in your video really got to me in that I have to put in my 100% not only to pass the class, but to actually know this stuff from left to right, not only for me or to pass NCLEX, but I think I owe it to my future patients, so that I can be the best that I can to take care of them... Pre nursing school tip... If you have room and time to add in one more class that could help you immensely in nursing school, I super highly recommend taking a medical terminology class. You might think that medical terminology is a given in nursing school. You will learn medical terminology, but if you already have a decent grasp on it before you get into nursing school everything that follows will be so much easier. I can't tell you how much more advanced I am than so many of my fellow students because I can figure out what the teacher is talking about from the very moment she mentions a word or the exact moment I read a word; whereas other students have to look things up or have to have things explained to them. If you know medical terminology, it's like having a huge piece of the puzzle already in clear sight.

I start nursing school next fall and right now I'm taking all my pre req's while working 2 full time jobs AND my husband is deployed AND I'm moving us from this home to an apartment closer to my school. It's nice to take a break and see how you've over come different obstacles. All A's is the ultimate goal!

This video is super inspirational. I find that when I aim high I do better. Sure, you may still get your degree with C's, but the information you're being taught isn't just for kicks and giggles. It's stuff you need to know! It's going to make you a quicker thinker and better nurse if you have it all in your head.

Thank you for the video! I start in January as well and everyone currently in the program keeps saying "Don't strive for an A, just be happy with passing." And that's so depressing! I know the material is hard, and if I do my absolute best and come out with a passing grade, I'll be happy I passed but I'll still be focused on what I can do next time for the A. I don't understand the mentality of 'just try to pass' at all! So cheers to wanting to be the best you can be!

Hey Ashley! So I started my first semester of nursing school this past fall and I ended up failing one of my courses. Before going into it, I had one more biology, Advanced Human A&P with the lab, that I still had to take and they recommended not taking 2 nursing classes with this hard class and being stubborn, I took all three anyways. I passed Biology with a B and one of my nursing classes with a 84.96 (that is .04 away from a B) and I actually failed the big, 4 credit nursing class. I'm retaking it this spring, but i'm just bummed that I stressed SO much this semester and I feel like it was for nothing. There was a lot more under the surface than what they told us at orientation and I regret packing on that much this semester, but I can only come back smarter and ready to take on the class again. I want to use this advice to not only succeed in this class, but to show myself (and everyone around me) that although I did fail, I'm not a failure because look, IM BACK! Im still fighting for what I am passionate about.

awesome video and very helpful!! I think another powerful tool people don't utilize is actually knowing your learning style!! My A&P teacher started her course with taking a learning style quiz, which I thought was silly since I've known I'm always "visual". Turns out I am Kinesthetic and Auditory! She then provides study techniques that are specialized for each learning style. I revamped my studying technique and now I study in half the amount of time and get all A's. It has changed my academic life 100%. Don't waste your time studying in a way you don't absorb information! I think this is the number one mistake college students make and they don't even know it

+Jaci A Yeah I'm going to be seriously be making a time management plan or a schedule, because I will be working as well. It's only a part time job but I don't know if I should drop a day? (I would work 8 hours a week, which is two 4 hr. work days). What do you think? Is it too much? My college is really fast paced since were in the quarter system not semester. So there's pretty much a test every two weeks, I seriously don't know what to do and I am freaking out.

@lynettejaimes1334

+UniqueStyLista It's been crazy, but worth it. After a hectic and stressful first days of the week I have clinicals on Friday. And honestly it gives me the motivation that I need to keep on going. Clinicals is amazing but also super scary because you're applying everything that you learned in the skills lab on real patients. Going to the hospital every friday makes me excited and happy because it serves as a reminder of what I am studying for. I cannot tell you how many times I've cried because of nursing school lol. It's super stressful but possible if you're up for the challenge and actually like what you are learning. I am on my 8th week in nursing school and its been a complete rollercoaster! starting from sleepless night to testing every week! But like I said, worth it.

Honestly yes I agree procrastinating isn’t good however even if you spent everyday studying and listening and studying lecture and book, it’s still all about those exams and how to answer them. In my fundamentals of nursing(foundations class) i studied everyday, and got 82s on the exams. Some questions on the exam are literally stuff that you wasn’t in the material that you studied over at all or from lecture because that was how I felt. I managed to get some of the questions right because I had to read the questions carefully. That is the key to passing nursing exams are reading questions carefully and picking out the right answers. Also, idk if u said this but another good thing is to practice NCLEX questions because that will help as well.

Hi, I'm new to your channel! I'm working on my science pre-requisites now for nursing school (done with all other prereq's), and I was wondering how you would rate the pre-req science courses from least to most difficult, and how did the most difficult compare to actual nursing courses? (My prereq's are chemistry, anatomy, microbiology, and physiology, all as separate courses/no combo courses). I'm excelling at Chemistry when it seems as though the rest of my class (or what is left of it at this point in the semester) seem to be struggling to even pass, so I was just curious how this course compares in difficulty to what (hopefully) lies ahead. Loved your video, and also wanted to mention that you convey a very personable and knowledgable demeanor. Thanks! :)

hi Ashley I am going to nursing school in January and as a mom I have to say you have to find balance and sometimes that A may go out the window. I don't think the A defines you as a nurse, imo. the message is striving to do your best but an A average doesn't necessarily make the best nurses or the hardest working nurses. this is my personal point of view I enjoy your videos and have respect for what your saying and get it xoxo

Getting all A's isn't important to me, it's how you perform as a nurse and especially how you care for your patients. All I cared about when I was in nursing school was passing and making sure I do my infinite best for caring for my patients. And boom, I graduated this past June. I was happy with B's and even the lowest C and all in all to get through nursing school. I got a BSN degree at California University State Long Beach. And I work at a clinic that specializes in caring for kids with blood disorders and cancers like leukemia and can't wait to get my Masters Degree. And again, I will not care if I do not get all A's, that's not my purpose as a nurse. It's doing my best and of course and most importantly giving compassionate care to my patients is what my purpose is.

Not true, I went to a good nursing school which is California State University Long Beach, and I got in even without all A's and graduated as one of the top of my class and work as a pediatric oncology nurse. SO SHUT THE HELL UP AND REPLY ALL YOUR BULLSHIT TO ME BUT I AIN'T READING IT!!!!!!!!!

I definitely think that straight A's do NOT necessarily make someone a great nurse. :) However, it never hurts to strive to do the best you can..and if that means getting all A's...then great! If not, then great! As long as we are all learning and growing and being safe, kind nurses....then that is the ultimate goal in my eyes. :)
