Seems to be a mental block with some people where they hate the idea of giving ground, slowing down etc. even if by not doing so they put themselves in more danger. It's the same as when drivers realise they have miss-timed a merge in turn, but instead of holding back and tucking in, they speed up and double down, risking their car and others' cars.

Watching these videos changed me too (I wasn't terrible, probably quite good, but I was very impatient). I used to hate getting baulked and held up by others. The other things that made me more patient, tolerant and forgiving is having a dashcam (if I do something stupid it is on camera), and having to commute on a motorway after a long period of unemployment (pandemic). I simply couldn't afford to get into any scrapes that took my car off the road. [The biggest risk being caught up in a crash on the motorway]. Ash, have you noticed an increase car lights being out? Head lights, tail lights, brake lights. Within 5 minutes of driving you will see it at least once. I often see several cars in a row with light faults. Why do we think this is so common now?
@gordon8613 күн бұрын
It's because most cars have daylight running lights and the dashboard lights up all the time. On older cars you would know your lights were off because the dash would be dark, but as they are lit up you don't think about it. It is probably also because when people learn they are driving newer cars with auto headlights so just don't think about it.
@awild103 күн бұрын
Because people don't take responsibility for checking their vehicle is in a roadworthy condition. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe their light stopped working during their journey but it's become so frequent I just think people are too lazy to check.

One thing I've noticed with a big interchange roundabout recently remodelled close to where I live: They've actually deliberately put in sight barriers on the approaches, to discourage people entering straight on at 40mph+ when they can 'see it's clear' from a way back. Is this standard now, does anyone know?
@PedroConejo19393 күн бұрын
I don't know if it's 'standard', but it's certainly widely used, as is putting shrubberies in the middle of the roundabout. It does help slow people down, but it also means the good drivers can struggle to see the dangerous ones early enough.
@sgttoxiiczz3 күн бұрын
If you notice on some larger roundabouts, they also have a mound or bushes in the middle of it so that you can't spot shields coming from the opposite direction to encourage people to slow down and spot traffic coming from the right.
@awild103 күн бұрын
Quite a few around my way and it's sometimes a bit annoying but when you see clips like the one in this video it's clear to see why. Even without sight barriers I'll always slow for a roundabout even if I don't need to stop so that I can if the situation changes. Some people drive at them with no intention of slowing.
@douglasreid6993 күн бұрын
they put these sight barriers and bushes in with the theory it will slow vehicles approaching but it doesnt stop it. it can also lead to drivers on the roundabout not spotting a vehicle approaching too fast and not caring as they emerge out in front and makes it difficult to avoid sometimes. sometimes the bushes or barriers are put in stupid places that hinder flow and visibility (56.052009, -3.758735. thats an exit i used rather often from the A876, it has bushes that block sight into the underpass which the concrete already does, i have seen a lot of near misses as the traffic entering from the right usually dont have to slow down because not enough traffic is U turning round the roundabout to go back down the duel carriage way they come from, so emerging is difficult as its too easy to miss a vehicle coming fast through the underpass and onto the roundabout while you have slowed to make sure its clear and trying to get back up to speed. the bushes really need removed.).

@@MintRobin An attentive driver would see that situation unfolding and leave plenty of room. The car coming from the right has stopped before the cam car has. No need to be as close as he was in the first place. Granted, not the cam car's fault and it could have been avoided with a mirror check from the car in front, but the cammer put themselves in that situation through not paying attention!
@MintRobin3 күн бұрын
@ I don't know I rewatched the clip and the red car was pulling out before the cam car was actually up to them. I really do feel like the cam car couldn't have done much more. I suppose, it's possible it could've been avoided by the cam car being a REALLY good driver, but I really think that is stretching it, because you're requiring them to look at traffic on the road you're joining onto, before you're even at the junction, when all you can see is that the car at the junction has already (incorrectly) decided it's safe to go. In fact I think a decent amount of people would've been looking to see if they could go, and driven straight into the red car before it reversed (only bad drivers, I admit, but I bet it would happen a lot) I don' t think the phone is to blame at all here. Since it's hands free, you're basically saying you're not allowed to talk to the passenger
@innocuouspseudonym5093 күн бұрын
@ I'm the sort of driver that suddenly stops talking frequently when talking to a passenger because my brain prioritises the road. I often have to ask a passenger to repeat themselves if they are talking to me, because I am distracted by the fact that I'm driving. Unfortunately, a lot of people allow the talking to distract them from driving and not the other way round. I simply don't use my phone at all when driving, I enjoy driving and I focus when I'm behind the wheel. And most people really don't have anything interesting to say that can't wait until I'm not driving. You feel the cam car couldn't have done more? How about beep their horn in response to the reverse lights? How about maintaining "tyres and tarmac" distance behind the car in front when slow/stationary for exactly this sort of reason? How about just giving other road users more space? It's safer in the long run. The trouble is that nowadays that phone being present and in use means that there is a high chance that the driver is also looking at or perhaps touching his phone instead of concentrating on driving. The fact that there is no reaction at all to what unfolds until it is too late, no sound of surprise or any attempt to avoid the incident as you can see it unfold, suggests that this guy was probably looking at his phone as soon as he started slowing down for the junction, which seems to be a very popular time for people to prioritise their phones. You can see countless videos of rear-enders and near misses because of phone use in this and other very similar situations. You have to remember that humans, unlike dash cams, have peripheral vision, eyes that can swivel and also a neck. ALSO A BRAIN. If you're not already making note of traffic on the road you're planning on joining as soon as visually possible, you're a terrible driver! I see all the time the bad merging onto DC's and motorways that could be avoided by simply looking to the right (OBSERVATION) when accelerating on the slip road, yet some people seem to have tunnel vision. Even by the time the dash cam sees the car coming from the right, the cam car IS STILL MOVING, when the driver should have seen it a long time before the dash cam. The car coming from the right comes to a complete stop, and the cam car IS STILL MOVING, the driver of the cam car has STILL not reacted!!! You really think they couldn't have done better?

Seems it is too easy to get a full licence in UK. In Tasmania where I live, you have to have a Learner licence for at least 12 months, have logged 80 plus hours driving, before you can sit for your P Plate licence. This is a licence for you to drive without supervision, but with restrictions (you cannot go above a speed limit, limit the size of car you can drive, how many passengers you can have, zero alcohol). Some states have a curfew as well during the P1 and P2 stage, and have to log even more hours to get your Ps. Once you have passed your P1 licence test (similar to the UK driving test), you have that for 12 months and log 50 hours driving before you go to P2 licence, slightly fewer restrictions (still zero alcohol), which you have to have for 12 months before getting a ‘full’ licence. No further testing required to go from P1-P2. Any suspensions, demerits during L and Ps can take you back to the start again.

@8:45 They should have absolutely spotted their mistake earlier, but I can't help but wonder how much of that initial mistake is down to poor layout of the temporary roadworks. Wet, dark, high vis and flashing lights *everywhere* makes for a very cluttered visual environment. Taking drivers out of their 'norm' further increases cognitive load. I'd say it's reasonably foreseeable that someone might misread where they're meant to go - putting a chicane with cones to the right there would subconsciously guide traffic back to the side of the road you want them on, with the added bonus of acting as traffic calming for oncoming vehicles coming through the roadworks.
@gopnikolai74833 күн бұрын
The two 4ft², reflective arrow signs pointing to the left weren't enough? The roadworks are laid out wherever needed, based on wherever the work is that's being done. It's up to drivers to open their eyes and follow massive road signs. It's not like it's a poorly laid-out permanent junction, it's temporary roadworks, drivers should be vigilant and expect things to be different and follow the signs directing them where they need to go. If they put cones down guiding the viewer's direction to the left, they'd be making the oncoming traffic go around that part for no reason. I guess it'd 'calm traffic down' but I rarely see people blast it through road works like that, and they'd just end up blasting through a chicane instead which I'd argue it worse. I know you say they should've spotted their mistake earlier but it's not like they drove on the wrong side for a few seconds or a couple dozen meters, they're completely on the wrong side of the road for nearly a minute. They passed 3 signs pointing them left, then past multiple signs facing the wrong way, with a grass divider and then a crash barrier on their left, a car facing them on the right with their headlight on, and then it took them ages to get left when they were on the wrong side of dividing white road lines. They're clearly senile, pissed, braindead, or all of the above, but there's no valid excuse.

Almost every time I leave Manchester at the Denton M67 roundabout, this happens at this exact exit with vehicles that have turned right from the M60. I've never turned right from the M60 so I'm unaware of what it's like but I wonder if the signage/road markings further back before the exit is inadequate or confusing for this to happen so often. Either that or there's just far more bad drivers on the road than I'd hope.
@MepsiPaxBerri3 күн бұрын
When exiting the M60 and turning left to the M67, there are 3 lanes. This opens into 4 lanes, 2 for A57, and 2 for M67. The extra lane seems to confuse people, either that or people assume the left lane is fine for the motorway, which it isn't, perhaps not expecting another exit there?

@davem92042 күн бұрын
@@innocuouspseudonym509 I've noticed a lot of signage is inconsistent. They seem to alter junctions with subtle changing to the lane markings and might change the sign nearest the junction, but not update the signs leading up to the junction. It ends with with lot of drivers having to change their mind at the last second. So I don't think it's always the drivers making mistakes.
@innocuouspseudonym509Күн бұрын
@ Yeah, that's definitely true, I had one such instance of that many years ago on my driving test, actually. I was actually narrating to the examiner what my thought process was the entire exam and he pointed out afterwards that that junction catches people out and they panic, whereas I was already prepared to stop for the roundabout (including observation checks) so it was no bother to reposition, although I said out loud "if I can't get over I'm afraid we're not taking the second exit" which is probably what he wanted to hear. The problem is though that instead of everyone just chilling out and being aware of the fact that people will want to change lanes on the approach to or on a roundabout, A LOT of drivers these days just don't have any consideration or awareness. I'm glad there are people like Ashley trying to change that. We all make mistakes, and most of us will try and correct them as safely as possible, but sometimes the people around us would rather see us suffer and flounder than help us achieve our aims. Goes for more than just driving.

I've seen that one at 2:23 (which is on Menlove Ave at the bottom of Beaconsfield) happen quite a few times over the years both while I've been on the bike and in the car. All I can think is that because the lights on the opposite carriageway stay green for much longer and so the traffic is still flowing on the same road, some drivers heading towards Woolton village don't realise that their light is actually on red. Possibly that anyway.

Ashley, you have more clout and contacts than me. Why don't you suggest that insurance companies set up a section that watches all of these dashcam videos? If they log a dangerous driver then they record the registration number, search the MIB database and pass the information on to the insurance companies. They can then up the premiums or decline to insure them. As it would be a commercial decision, no proof of the actual driver would be required and no court action. Get caught on camera then your insurance increases, no appeal, unless you can prove the vehicle was stolen.

3:47 & 5:14 were my clips from 2 years ago. I had only passed my test about 2 years previous to these, so still a fairly "new" driver at that point. I do admit, I should have slowed down a bit more for the Learner and MY mistake was assuming that they had seen me. However, (not sure how clear it is from the clip), the Instructor did put his hand up as an apology and I did acknowledge with a wave back (you can just see part of my hand in the camera) - I didn't beep the horn, or shout obscenities (you might hear me mutter "Jeez!!") but, it was just because I got a fright myself!! It wasn't aimed at the learner. 😊 The one with the Royal Mail van though - I had just joined a NSL road, so was slowly building up my speed before the road straightened out, so luckily I wasn't going that fast. The Royal Mail van was in front of me, but what I don't get is - why didn't he drive 'forward' into that driveway, rather than stopping on a 60mph road and reversing in?? And again, I didn't beep or swear - I saw what was happening in plenty of time, so I slowed down to let him complete his manouvre. You can view the whole clip on my channel, for anyone interested - where it also shows my speed on the dashcam. Entitled "Royal Fail" and the Learner one was entitled "Did the Learner see me?" The laws are priority not right of way. They just mean if there's an accident then the ped isn't immediately considered the one at fault, but they absolutely can be at fault depending on conditions etc If you ever hit someone, even if you don't have a dashcam, immediately get your phone out to record. You don't need to record the other person in the accident, but get a good look of the lighting and visibility etc. My friend was hit off his bike really badly and the car claimed "it was dark, he should've had his lights on" and it took a whole year until they were able to see how dark it was at that time of day at that time of year at that spot, to prove he didn't need his lights on. The blame shifted a lot based on context of lighting.

Isn’t it rule 8 that gives already crossing pedestrians priority? H2 only says that those on the road should give priority to those wishing to cross when turning into or out of a junction. Rule 8 did change in 2022, but the specific part I’m referring to was not changed. > If you have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, you have priority and they should give way I may well be misinterpreting though

I was on the M3 today and at fleet services the traffic stopped due to an accident. People darted into the service station from the third lane, two reversed down a hard shoulder, a lorry stopped in the hard shoulder and when the motorway reopened one driver caused chaos by trying to reverse down the fleet slip road back on to the motorway. If the police had cameras there they would have a field day sending out fines.

Thanks for this video Ashley. I'm a stickler for the rules but it always gets me into trouble. No good deed goes unpunished etc. I've been bullied for not straightlining a roundabout, screamed at for not cutting the corner of a road (the other person did so they almost collided with me) and I've been flashed at to break the speed limit more times than I can count. And what is it with so many people having their fog lights on? My youngest daughter makes it into a game, we counted 19 on a 20 minute drive today. I can't see in my rear view mirror from the glare. It's all so disheartening, I've only been a qualified driver since Oct 2024 and it makes me wonder if it's all worth it 🙃 I had to take my P plates off because of the aggro I got, it's much better without them but still so many incidents of bullying behaviour. @lucywilliams60282 күн бұрын
When someone flashes you to break the speed limit are there two lanes? this only happens to me when people want me to move over so they can get passed rather than to speed up yourself. Though for the tailgaters and bullies I usually slow down, or I try to get out of their way. With the fog lights, I've seen/read lots about headlights on newer cars dazzling other drivers can't remember the stat but alot of drivers are struggling with the LED lights, they make it very difficult to see at times, and if they take a bump can look like they flash you from behind or blind you if they are oncoming (even turning onto the road you are on can be blinding). I've lost sight of the road a few times. Can't wait for spring/summer - lighter morning and evenings. I took my P plates off after a day and it improved quickly, people tend to bully newer drivers as they don't think they are competent enough like they do with learners. Keep doing as you are doing - there are a lot of idiots on the road (think it's got worse in the last few years). I always drive with the thought that most people can't drive or have picked up really bad habits :)

I understand the drivers watching the other car go the wrong way down the dual carriageway were probably laughing in disbelief, but I am worried at how much they were laughing verses how little phoning the police was occurring. They even started asserting the driver MUST be drunk. If you're that sure a driver is drunk, call the police! You have the footage as proof and you won't get in trouble for being mistaken.
@MintRobin3 күн бұрын
I think they knew the dual carriage way was very short, and they could see how the single mistake at the start of the clip could've caused them to be committed in that mistake, so they gave a little credit to someone unfamiliar with the roads at that stage. As soon as the dual carriageway ended, and the driver stayed on the wrong side, that's when they realised how serious it was, the tone in their voices changed.

Phoning the police isn't very easy while driving, and of course picking up a phone to make a call will get you CyclingMikey'd. If you've got a passenger who can do it, then great. But if you're on your own then you'll have to pull over to make the call, and that sort of road wasn't really suitable for just pulling over on. That lorry wasn't carrying HAY bales! It was carrying STRAW bales!! And there are several big, and important differences. Hay is substantially heavier than straw. It's more densely packed than straw. In a stack, or on the back of a lorry, hay bales are less stable and more prone to shifting, especially in transit. Straw is lighter, less densely packed and and holds its shape better in the bale, and inherently less prone to shifting. Straw is a much cheaper produce used for animal bedding. Hay is substantially more expensive and is a feedstuff primarily for sheep and cattle. As for the bales, there are several different types of bales, and without being there to see and touch them, you can only be guessing at how much they weigh. There are the classic "conventional" bales which tend to come in two different sizes, but as a rule are from around four stone (straw) to around eight stone (hay). Then there are half ton and one ton round bales, and then there are the larger Heston one and two ton bales, and the daddy of bales when I was still in farming was the massive Welger high density bales up to four tons apiece. So, take your pick! Hay is normally baled into the conventional sizes, though it can be baled in larger, usually round, bale sizes if it is going to be wrapped in plastic film. From looking at the debris coming from those bales, it is plain to see that these were straw bales, NOT hay bales... Worryingly, that load made actual physical contact with the second bridge, and may even have struck the first one. Worrying because those load straps could have been seriously damaged by the contact with the concrete - and if you want to make your load shift, then striking a bridge as fairly reliable way to make it happen!

Couldn't find the answer in a quick scan of the comments, so I googled it: Hay bales can weigh from 40 lbs to 2,000 lbs (18 kg to 907 kg).They come in two basic shapes, round and square. Round hay bales are usually quite large and weigh from 600 to 1,600 lbs (272 kg to 544 kg). Square hay bales come in two size groups, small and large. Most small square bales can be handled manually. Large square hay bales and round hay bales require bale handling equipment such as a tractor with a bale lift. Weight and size comparison of round and square hay bales. Small 2 string square bale 14” x 18” x 36” 40 lbs to 60 lbs (18 kg to 27 kg). Small 3 wire square bale 16” x 22” x 44” 100 lbs to 120 lbs (45 kg to 54 kg). Someone I know had been driving their brand new car for just a week when a hay bale flew off the back of a truck and hit his car. Luckily he was fine but the car did spend quite a lot of time in the garage.

The first clip, the road markings for that M67 junction extend about half a mile down the slip road from the M60, and it's a loooong slip road. 100% they just weren't paying any attention. Everyone who drives between Manc and Sheffield knows that junction like the back of their hand

The first clip with the BMW. You do realise that they HAVE to be in the outside lane because they have to be in front, have to be faster and self important.

I did the NC500 in August last year and I couldn't believe how many signs I saw that inform drivers which side of the road to drive on. I thought it was just an over-exaggeration. A 'Scottish thing' perhaps. Well I had just left my last NC500 stop (the Harry Potter train bridge for the photo op) and had a motorhome come around the blind bend on my side of the road. Not only was I alarmed at that, but also the fact that the driver didn't immediately change to the correct lane (no other traffic so would've been safe to do so). Nope, they carried on for maybe 20-30m or so before they'd realised their mistake and changed lane. Sadly no dashcam fitted to my vehicle so can't send anything. I like to think I flashed or beeped my horn but honestly I've forgotten whether I did or not...

It does seem odd given that to reach the NC500 you would have needed to drive a long way from a port to get there. Or do people fly into places like Inverness and hire a car at the start of the route?

I see red light jumpers every day, the knock on effect is that it then slows progress for everyone on the junction... just because they don't want to wait a few extra minutes! With the date stamps on these videos, it could be a while before my submitted clips appear on here n👍

2:36 Driving on hatchings is not very wise due to there could be debris - Karma would have been a puncture! As you say, Ashley, Stay safe everyone!

6:45 Q: With that queue skip, if someone in an old beater had come the other way and clipped him, how would insurance have seen it?
@wrightwoodwork3 күн бұрын
As they are over the center line the queue jumper is liable. The fact they are skipping the queue doesn't matter
@horrortackleharry3 күн бұрын
@@wrightwoodwork Well that's what I'd hope! But I know insurance companies can sometimes be a little cranky in their assessments.
@tin20013 күн бұрын
@@wrightwoodwork Not if they were stationary within a reasonable time for the other car to stop. Simply being a lawbreaking dick doesn't automatically make you liable for damage. That said... The sort of person who does that sort of thing is not likely to use caution and stop constantly. They'll just slam right into the oncoming crapbox, then probably claim the crapbox driver is to blame for not moving out of the way.

We have carers who are full time at our house, our mobility van a Peugeot horizon is parked between the house and a wall where you reverse in up to the front door whilst allowing it to open to get out, one of our carers said she was not confident enough to park in such a tight space, our case worker decided to get a driving instructor to teach her how to do it, he decided he did not want the job so i park the car for her, i think the driving instructor competence is getting poorer.

4:10 I watch a few lorry and farm KZbinrs. Those bales would weight a half a tonne too 2 tonnes depending on what the bale is made of ie grass or silage and it would be like hitting a stone brick if the top one comes off. They do a nasty number on whatever hits or gets hit by one

4:38 very very few drivers go AROUND mini-roundabouts. We need cameras here. They'd pay for themselves within 10 minutes of being set up since you can fine motorists £300 for going over the central markings.
@davem92042 күн бұрын
Many mini-roundabouts really aren't suited to going completely round, if they were they would be proper roundabouts. I see a lot of dashcam videos where drivers who are going wide left around the blob when turning right often getting caught out by other drivers thinking they are going left or straight on. When they go wide around the blob they become obscured by other cars and the A-pillars, so harder to spot the right turn. So while you shouldn't cut the corner of the exit from the mini-roundabout, taking a wide line to not touch the blob can lead you into more problems.

There was a family and a driver that recently got killed on the m6 at Tebay with a car driving the wrong way down the motorway.
