Slowing down early and rolling up to lights ready for them to change to green so you can continue through is a concept that I am so surprised that more people don’t do. Coming to a full stop in either manual or auto is so annoying when the lights change straight away, and with some years of experience you get a sense of timing. You know the lights will probably change so why rush in just to stop?

It's the amount of people who just want to do the limit, say 30, right up until they get to the lights, just to stop. Just why? If I'm approaching lights on red, I always try to slow early and trigger the sensors to change to green. With current fuel prices, keeping moving saves money.

This is something I picked up by osmosis from my dad's driving. Instructors were consistently surprised that I already had certain skills, despite a lack of lessons.

As a cyclist, when I see a red light I slow down to try and maintain momentum through a green light. Of course, cars behind me insist on racing to join the back of the queue.

I try to do this, but unfortunately some drivers enjoy waiting at red lights so much that they jump in front of you, so you might have to stop anyway.

Also the person at the lights slowing to wait till they turn green didn't speed off when they did which helped save the cat running across the road

I think that may have been more due to the vehicle, looks like a HGV by the camera height. :)

@@VoxelLoop you're correct that it was an HGV, but I did also hold back for the cat in the road. Trucks have a lot more go than that ;)

@@VoxelLoop Motorbikes often (or rather, should) do this by default too as stopping is a pretty big commitment on those. Once you go below a certain speed you have to grab the clutch and brake, stop on the left foot find the bite and ride off again. By creeping up to the red light you can avoid doing that as well as practice your low speed balance and engine braking.

Regarding the last clip I play a game in my head of keep the wheels rolling , go from A to B without stopping , not always possible of course but satisfying when achieved .

I never stop unless I actually have to. Does my head in when morons jump into the gap I'm rolling into. But i just blast the horn and full beam them.

@@ZJS0113 You shouldn't let it get to you , but I know how you feel , it's when I've timed the lights perfectly BUT there's THAT driver who hasn't noticed the lights have changed to green and sits there ( usually on the phone ) and stops your momentum .

Also didn't speed up when the cat was running on the pavement, made it a lot easier when the cat ran out into the road.

Yes I do that too, even if it means moving at 0.00001 mph! At least that way I haven't had to overcome friction moving off from a standing start...and neither have I had to use the otherwise good practice of applying the handbrake.

And some US delivery service UPS?) routing their trucks to avoid left turns (as those typically cause waiting times go get tur lugn the junction, and rather routes them around the block using multiple right hand turns instead.

Also, it was used as a comedy device on "Red Dwarf" where the crew were becoming annoyed about the damage to Starbug that meant when they wanted to turn right, they had to turn left 3 times! Perhaps that episode was written after a visit to Liverpool!

My grandfather lived in a London borough. When going to visit him there were many main roads where right turns were not allowed. My father used to say come on boy "just do a dogs hind leg" i.e three left turns. I had a colleague at work, about whom the others would joke his car couldn't turn right he would nearly always use this technique.

The second clip demonstrates a very underrated solution that I've used a few times when trying to turn right at busy junctions - if there's a roundabout or side streets further up that get me back onto the main road, or perhaps even a alternative route altogether to the same destination. Even it it doesn't save time, it can be a way of reducing not just risk but stress! Sometimes it pays to think outside the box in looking for a solution

Especially useful in vans and rigid lorries where some junction approaches make the view left (to turn right) impossible, but obviously being on the right-side of the vehicle gives a good view to the right to turn left.

The cyclist at 2:38 did not spoil the clip, they ignored a sign that is merely advisory and saw no good reason why they should dismount.. Of course they could have preferred to carry on using the road instead of being expected to break their journey by having to walk part of it and thereby hold up traffic.

Curious to see if anyone comments here - I tend to do the same as the cyclist: if there are no pedestrians on the bridge/path, I'll cycle on it if it's wide enough to cycle on, and it's safer for me to be on it than on a narrow road. (BTW - I think your second sentence is ambiguous - I believe you meant: "Of course they could have preferred to carry on using the road _and thereby hold up traffic_ instead of being expected to break their journey by having to walk part of it.")

Further, that sign is the result of a poor cycling network, where there isn't a safe protected/separated cycle path. Assuming that bridge was empty, I would've ignored that sign too.

@@Phazon8058MS Funnily enough, I've never seen a "Motorists get out and push" sign... My reaction to them would depend on the situation. I might dismount and push, or I might ride through slowly (often little more than walking pace), and stop completely if I meet any pedestrians. I certainly wouldn't try to overtake any pedestrians. Worth pointing out that, in a narrow situation, a cyclist mounted on a bike (but stopped, maybe leaning against railings/wall) is narrower than a cyclist walking alongside a bike and pushing it. Therefore, by riding through but stopping before meeting anyone coming the other way, you're actually creating less of an obstruction.

When I'm cycling, i will sometimes bump up onto an empty section of pavement to allow following motorists to pass me. I generally slow to a crawl and would never do it if there were pedestrians around.

@1:11 Yes, there's a junction near me that can be busy at times and it's hard to turn right, in those cases I go left and then go around some back streets where I can get back onto the main road. It helps if you're familiar with the area.

I was lucky enough, many years ago when I was teaching, to do a minibus driving course, which qualified me to transport groups of students to various events. It was a two day course, organised by the local authority and led by two ex Met police officers. One day of theory, simulations and brushing up on the law and the Highway Code and a second day of practice - checking the vehicle before taking it out, risk assessment, passenger management (important with 20 or so excited children on board!) and a two hour 'on road' assessment. The training included all of the points made in the video and the instructors stressed the importance of driving 'smoothly', ie. avoiding heavy braking and aggressive acceleration wherever possible, which is best maintained by driving to the road conditions, anticipating the behaviour of other drivers and creating a 'zone of safety' around yourself, your vehicle and your passengers. Part of the assessment was to keep up a running commentary as you were driving, explaining what you were seeing, anticipating potential dangers and explaining your own responses. These two days improved my driving radically and I still apply the same principles to this day. It's good to see a video showing positive outcomes from careful and considerate driving. Thanks you.

Absolutely spot on with changing route to prevent an awkward/slow right turn - as my instructor said many years ago, if you're driving in a place you know well, use your local knowledge to plan a route that avoids these things, there's no shame in it, and you'll get there faster.

Turning left onto a busy street to user a roundabout up the road is what I do all the time :) In fact, I've done all of these examples at some point or another. It's a crazy world out there. Gotta think for others as much as you do for yourself, sometime even more so.

There is a McDonalds near me were this is a constant issue....it's a very busy road and emerging from the premises by turning right has indeed now has in fact a "no Right Turn" sign - but people ignore it and create problems for themselves and others. And the sad thing is there is a a roundabout 150 yards to the left where you can safely do a U-Turn. effing lazy selfish barstools is what those ignoramous fat McDonalds muching idiots that keep trying to turn right exiting this particular McDonalds.....I'm gonna sit there one day and film it for ya Ashley!

I see this all the time where I live. There's a small but busy Tesco, and when people come out they can turn left, go around the roundabout literally 20m away, and then continue right, or wait for ages and ages to turn right. They could all do with seeing clip 2

@@RicardoPetrazzi there is a similar issue with the Amazon warehouse and the exit from its staff car park in my area. They have a no right turn sign and the exit of the car park is angled to the left, but their staff still insist on turning right, despite a roundabout being a mere 100 yards to their left!

I like Ash - usually I'm watching clips of shocking driving, with anger and disastrous results, but his are calming, reassuring and give good advice and recognition of good, thoughtful road use. He is a brilliant content creator; you can tell he puts lots of effort (and analysis) in to every video.

Traffic lights nowadays are put into sequence by the induction loops on the floor, (the black rectangles you can see) so depending on where they are will depend on how long they take to change. Also if the lights are on green and you cross these induction loops some systems are set up in order to turn to red in the hope of slowing traffic down.

Liked that last one Ashley. Would appreciate a video on efficient driving - how to use as little fuel as possible. Obviously there are serious environment reasons for this (including not idling when stationary) but a big money saver - on fuel and components. I see so much driving that is wearing out tyres, brakes, engines, etc. way faster than needed. Thanks in advance!

In an old work location when commuting home there was a roundabout where the left lane (for 1st exit and straight) always had a massive queue and the right lane (3rd exit) a short queue. I always went down the right lane and did a full circuit of the roundabout to go straight ahead. Saved a good ten-fifteen minutes on my journey.

A roundabout near me has 2 lanes approaching it. The left lane is left only, the right one is for left, straight ahead and right. Hardly anyone notices the right lane can legally turn left, so if you approach in the right lane, you often go around to the left without stopping. It doesn't work in morning peak, because enough regular users know, but especially on fine day outs (read rubber neckers), then you can easily pass several vehicles.

Totally agree with Steven Hines's comment below about strategic decision making concerning right turns at T-junctions. I've been known to use the "turn left and use a side-street on the right" option.

That final clip approaching the traffic light is something I think about on every ride. My goal is to avoid having to put my foot down, so controlling my approach to the lights in order for them to go green and for me to scan the intersection for vehicles jumping the lights. I regularly get passed on my way to the lights by cars that are then still stationary when I enter the intersection.

0:27 I do this quite often. That's why I always like to have my navigation running even if I know where I'm going. If I can't turn right, I just turn left and let the GPS work out which way it's best, and I can focus on driving.

The second clip is a road i use a lot for work, its Radford Bank in Stafford and one of the busiest roads around the area! Really awkward junction to turn right out of so really good to use that roundabout!

Since watching these videos, I’ve been attempting to get into the habit of slowing down when approaching a red light rather than coming to a complete stop in my driving lessons. I managed to do it a couple of times in my lesson last week. My instructor was impressed with me wanting to do this skill.

3:48 - Agreed but if you're doing this, ensure that it is safe to do so by checking your mirrors for someone who might chance an overtake or a motorbike etc.

8:40 I am good at this, I love timing it at a T junction that relies on sensors to change the lights. Then there is another junction that has the lights match up perfectly with the pedestrian crossing, so I just look at the pedestrian light, seeing it's changed to red, and then I can maintain my speed and by the time I get to the light, it's green for me.

I agree fully with Clip 7, I always do this with red lights, I slow down gradually from far away while they're red and by the time I get there, they go green and I accelerate away without having to stop. Drivers behind me sometime get impatient and tailgate or even overtook a couple of times just to race up to a light for the sake of stopping when they could have kept moving.....

When I was riding motorbikes, I was taught how to aim to get to a traffic light as it changes from red to green - a habit I now also use when driving a car. Linked to this is that to do this effectively on a bike oftentimes requires deceleration by stepping down through the gears. However, I understand that modern car driving schools recommend using the brakes to slow down instead of using the gearbox.

Is that the case? I was taught about 3 years ago to use gearbox and brakes to come to a controlled stop, but maybe its different given I've ridden a motorcycle prior and the instructor also rides them.

Clip No 2 ... My car is parked on a side road joining a main road which is always busy. Just a few yards after turning left there is an industrial estate with a dedicated 'right turn lane' to get into it. Plenty of room on the estate to turn around and exit turning left. I have never pulled out of the side road and tried to turn right (except possibly in the middle of the night).

Just watched an episode about "middle lane hoggin" Very relatabla. There are 2 situations I come across during my daily commute. The ultra slow overtaker(blind spot hoggin) and the almost drives me off the road lane changer(after overtaking litterally immediately lane changing again not even a cars lenght beyond) I find in the recent years there is more and more of this behaviour on the roads. have a great day!

I’ve done the turn to follow traffic and then turn around thing myself. My route home takes me across a bridge over a river and this big main road can become bumper to bumper traffic when busy. This means I often struggle to or simply can’t turn left to get into my road. So sometimes I just keep going, get to the park which I know is further ahead, go around and then come back in the opposite direction to then come into my road. Yes, it’s longer to drive but saves me sitting like an idiot waiting and potentially being in danger.

The motorcyclist using the roundabout from Aldi. I live close to this area and it's a nightmare to turn right. There have been many incidents as a result. Good call!

Even if turning left and coming back from the roundabout doesn't save time, it does have frustration and you arrive feeling a bit more chilled than otherwise

I’m from the US so things are flipped and we don’t use roundabouts often but I much prefer turning right onto a busy street (especially a high-speed one) and making a legal u-turn at the next permitted intersection than trying to make a risky gap and getting t-boned from either direction.

For the 2nd clip, one example I have is if you want to go straight across a busy road, rather than picking that road, pick one road down, turn left to the main junction, and then turn right to the original minor road you wanted to go down.

A place I shop at is a nightmare to get out off with a right turn across two lines of heavy traffic. Like in your clip many a time I do a left then a hundred yards down to do a right into another shopping car park, swing round and back out to the road for a left turn and on to my journey. Easy safe solution and only takes me about four minutes to pass my original start point. Many's a time I do similar by going around a block of houses and come out at my original point on the opposite side of the road. It's a doddle.

I do the slowing for the lights early especially up hill, saves me from needing to do a hill start half the time

Re the second clip: I do that sort of thing all the time. Rather than turning left (North America), I'll often turn right and then take an alternate route, even if it's likely to take longer. It's just far less aggravation. Of course, it helps to have a good working knowedge of the roads in the area, but even if I'm a bit vague on the local road layout, I'll often do the same thing. Then I either pick a low traffic side street with a traffic signal and do a U-turn or similar on the side street. This is especially something I'll do when trying to emerge onto a "stroad" as those are often wide enough that you need binoculars to see if there's a gap in the traffic on the far lanes. (Yes, that's a joke. Mostly.)

Another great video Ashley! On the issue of the ‘cyclists dismount’ sign, unless it’s the bike in the red circle ⭕️ I believe these blue rectangular signs are advisory. So if the bridge was clear I think it’s reasonable that they would have proceeded without dismounting. Interested to hear your thoughts on this

Did you get this info from Cycling UK or another source? I've done a little digging on this and it requires a video all for itself. If blue rectangular signs are advisory I'm going to drive in every cycle lane I can tomorrow and also I'm going the wrong way down every one way street I can find 🤔

@@ashley_neal there's really no need for sarcasm is there? Blue cyclist dismount signs are advisory. Other blue signs are not. But in any case, to drive down a one way the wrong way you would need to go through no entry signs... You know, the big round red ones...

@@ashley_neal I think cycle lane signs are advisory to the cyclist, yes. It’s the white lines along the edge of the lane which are the bits mandatory for cars

That second clip is a supermarket junction round the corner from me! Me and my husband have both said they should have just made it a left turn only. The amount of idiots we q behind who won’t just turn left and go around the island is insane !

I have on occasion turned left into a flow of traffic, then turned right into a side road, turned around and then turned left again so I am going where I want to go. An Aldi car park on the other side a short distance along on the left would be a suitable place to do that - particularly if it had a place to sit in whilst waiting to turn right into it. With traffic lights, I try not to stop because the first yard from stationary is the ost expensive.

I have done that loads of times turned left because it's impossible to turn right because of the oncoming traffic I always say to her indoors it is quicker to do that than by. trying save a few seconds and have an accident and end up in the back of an ambulance and getting your car fixed and all the rest of the ship what comes with having a accident all for the sake of saving a few seconds .

#13 is a regular for me. I'm generally in the inside lane, but despite the roundabout being well marked the number of near misses is astounding. It gets worse as you head towards the city centre turn off, some drivers simple refuse to stay in the outside lane to exit and cut across to the inside when there is no need. The roundabout is due for a major redesign in the next couple of years.

I once drove off the top of a muti storey car park..... it saved time not going down all them ramps...... but the car was wrecked......with no commentary as well.

Correct about close to home risk takers. Every night they come home they cut the corner, then one day, crash. In fact most car crashes happen close to home, familiarity can make you complacent.

Living really rural I come across many of these things. Biggest issue is narrow roads, lack of passing places. I always try to slow for traffic lights to catch them back to when they go green, if possible. Small side rant, There’s nothing worse than someone who’s sat on your bumper trying to push you along. It’s an issue I see every day, way to many in a rush to go nowhere.

Clip 13: I was coming round there just this afternoon, not surprised with the multiple clips as always see something similar, even worse further round as cars pull off into Leeds, you always get cars cutting across the 3 lanes

0:50 I do this sometimes, especially on really big junctions. I used to do it a lot when I first passed my test as I hated right turns at busy junctions haha

Green traffic light means Go if the way is clear, so if cars do get caught in the middle then traffic from other directions should not cross the solid white line until they have cleared the junction. Difficult when the exit road is a backlogged with traffic. Maybe yellow box junction should be there.

I often coast toward traffic lights, doesn't really matter what colour they are. I'm getting distance for no fuel usage whatever happens, and if they do change then I'm going slower and have more time to react (as does the person behind me). If they don't change, I'm not actually impeding traffic flow. Especially helpful in London, where the speed limit is often 20mph and there are lots of red light cameras.

I did that left-then-u-turn when I wanted to turn right across a dual carriageway and the traffic lights were out. I figured trying to negotiate 4 lanes of traffic on a 50mph road was suicidal at best so chose not to even attempt it. Not to mention I'd have probably been waiting ages for a suitable gap to appear. So, instead turned left, then pulled a u-turn at the next roundabout (less than 1/4 mile away).

Great point about turning right at a busy junction, I always turn left and use the roundabout, it's so much easier than risking yours and others lives we have a Lidl near me and at times it's almost impossible to get out yet a 100 yards away there's a nice big convenient roundabout 😎

Clip 13. Armley Gyratory in Leeds. That's normal for there, even with the line markings to help. I always try to be in staggered formation for that junction.

To answer the question on clip 2; In the absence of a roundabout I would be, initially, turning left to then take the next right with the intent of hanging a 3 point turn at the earliest safe opportunity. Easy enough to to accomplish although local knowledge would be useful. Some side roads aren't wide enough or might have many parked vehicles which rules that particular manoeuvre out. Good shout (forget which clip) with the white Taxi.... many of us may assume that the Driver was queue jumping 🤔. Stay safe everyone 👍

Clip 2, that's the only way I can get out of work after weekday day-shift. Left out of work, 50 meters up the road, turn right into the trading estate and turn round in one of the empty car parks; then a left turn back on to main road, past work, and wave at everyone still trying to do a right turn out of the factory!!!

I find myself trying to turn left (driving on the right), if it's too hard to get out, I turn right and drive to a traffic light where either I can make a legal U turn, or pull into a parking lot, and then re-approach that light so so I can now turn left.

Very good info! Even after 10 years on the road I'm still learning everyday! People tailgating me when at the correct speed limit like 30mph for example, is a common thing I experience :( so frustrating 😤.

I was thinking as I watched that I use that turn left and go around the roundabout 100m down the road trick regularly at a nearby branch of Lidl that fronts onto a busy main arterial. I was amused to then see that it was an Aldi in the clip.

The task in the final clip was 1 of the 1st things I was taught when I was learning how to drive but it surprises me how little road users do this. I actually had my dad even ask me why I slowed down so much for a red light before the line I explained to him why and he thought by doing exactly what happened in the clip it was more dangerous

There is one particular junction that gets busy at rush hour, my ideal route is to turn right, then at the next light controlled intersection to turn left, however with traffic backed up I often filter to the left of the stopped traffic, make a left turn, turn right into the next side street, right again at the into a much quieter street and then left onto my intended route. I nearly always come out ahead of the traffic that waited to make the right hand turn. There are other intersection where at busy times I will similarly turn left and make a U turn at the next intersection for a safer and more timely exit.

6:12 In the US at least, you're supposed to allow traffic that's legally entered the junction to clear before you enter the junction (blocking the intersection doesn't county as 'legal,' but you should still yield to cross traffic that entered the intersection before your light turned green)

I do the slowing early at traffic lights as often as possible, driving an automatic it's easier to creep for the last few metres than it is to come to a complete stop. Trains also do this as like you say it saves fuel.

wow, that climbing plant has devoured the house @ 8:26. Also in the 4th clip, the cyclist dismount sign is only a recommendation, nothing more, so still a good clip in my eyes.

Regarding clip 2 I do that quite often coming out of my street no roundabout but I go Futher up and cross into a side road to turn around

That's a tiny combine too, some of them can be huge. Seen one on tracks before that really is massive. For turning left if it's busy, I guess you could also turn left, then right into a side road, turn round and turn left. You'll only be crossing 1 lane at a time of the busy road. I have considered turning left before when I have to turn right onto the a140 at busy times, but the roundabout is a few miles away so not ideal.

you build your farm implements narrower in the UK. here in the states, they take up two lanes, and most combines have to dismount the header and tow it behind, lengthwise.

@@madisntit6547 when we visited scotland before COVID, we saw a few that had narrow headers built to fit the roads. it's one of the big differences between US and UK farming. in the US, farmers have wide machinery, and use pickups and trucks to move their crops over the road, and in the UK, the tractors are built to go over the road. however, roads in farmland normally have very wide clearances to the side, so farmers can drive their equipment from field to field at harvest time, with the implements overhanging to the side of the road.

@@kenbrown2808 Not quite as big as 2 lanes but the one I mentioned took up 1 1/2 (single carriageway). It wasn't a small road but not super wide either. I live in Suffolk (UK) and see so many tractors. Edit: But the one I saw was a rarity on the road, normally they aren't anywhere near that big.

Just looked up size limits for wide tractors and for up to 3.5m you don't need an attendant but might need to notify the police and that is almost 2x the width of a car. Any bigger and you need an attendant. For up to 2.55m you don't need to notify anyone. Can't really be sure about what I saw but an attendant is just another person in a car and they did have that.

to add to the motorcyclists great idea to use the roundabout - I live near a vusy T junction where I need to turn right at the lights, but usually there is at least 30 cars queing up and green light only lets 2-4 cars through. So what I do, is use the left lane which is only for going straight ahead, then immediately after the junction turn right into a culdesac, turn around, turn left to go back into the junction and turn left to go home, while the que of cars are still waiting

My gran took her test 7 times before finally passed in her 50s, she only ever went to Marks and Spencers and back and refused to turn right. You could walk there quicker 😆

Clip 2 - turn left, go round the next roundabout to come back where u were. Yep, even as a car driver, certain local junctions have virtual gridlock for turning right…..but there’s a roundabout just a few yards to the left. One of the car parks has a exit turn left only sign to tell people to do just that…because the traffic is so bad.

Going round the roundabout to the left instead of trying to turn right at a junction is often far quicker and easier. Not everyone is used to seeing vehicles going all the wah around the roundabout though, so must be done with extreme caution.

Yup, I, too, coast when approaching a red traffic light. You maintain some momentum while your car's engine is not using fuel at all since it doesn't need to produce any output. Besides, you don't need to abruptly get back on the gas when the light turns green and can instead power out smoothly up to the appropriate cruising speed again. There is a traffic light near my home which has a habit of turning red when you least expect it, so I always simply coast in case I needed to prepare to stop. Seriously, I am of the belief that every road user needs to learn how to "lift and coast." This is something you keep hearing in high level racing when the drivers needed to conserve fuel in order to make their race strategies work. Why not use the same idea in everyday driving? One thing I discovered is that coasting helps you to slow down much smoother which also serves to make your brake pads last longer. Another thing I used to do when I had a manual was to shift down (either by heel-toe or simple rev matching if I don't need to brake--performance/race driving methods that are perfectly possible to do smoothly on the public roads with practice) so that when the lights do turn green, I am already in the correct gear to accelerate again.

While I agree with the principle, "coast", I think, gives the wrong impression of the safest way of doing this. "Coasting" implies that the clutch is depressed and that the wheels are turning without power from the engine. Down-shifting to a more appropriate gear/speed gives increased control over the car and its speed.

This is why I said "lift and coast," which, again, something that racing drivers do for fuel conservation before braking for corners, and something that definitely should be practiced more by regular road drivers.

Rev-matching is vital for my car to get up hills! I honestly do think its a huge issue with instructors like Ashley having nice cars with power on demand, only for people who pass (like myself) to get a 1.0L and never had to learn how to drive with no power. Like for me, on dual carriageway/motorway if I'm going say 60mph and wanna overtake someone and join the outside lane where traffic is flowing at 70mph I need plan which gap way behind me I'm gonna slot in to, rev-match from 5th to 4th otherwise the car jerks like crazy, create some extra distance between me and the car in front just to allow a few seconds run up to reach 70mph before even attempting to move out to the gap I identified earlier - if the car behind me beats me to it and join the gap its game over I gotta repeat the whole process again. Whereas in lessons it was literally a case of I wanna overtake, check which gap to slot in to and put my foot down I think ultimately what I'm saying is my car has taught me to drive in a way that buying a fast car never would have!

Similar decisions where I live. It's about 400 yds to the bypass if I turn right out of my drive, but a mile or more if I turn left...depending on which other exit I use. Nevertheless, if traffic is endlessly streaming in at 20yd distances from the right and I'm aiming to go left up the bypass, then that's the way I turn. It's annoying to have to add to the urban congestion rather than use the bypass for the reason it was constructed, but overall quicker and less frustrating.

04:24 How on earth did they not see the cammers vehicle approaching. Surely they should have observed the cammer lighting up the road and various nearby street furniture in the dark well before their vehicle comes into view? If they are so poor at observation they shouldn't be driving.

Regarding the last clip if people creep along at speeds below 5mph it can be very difficult for learner motorcycles to follow in a straight line and end up either swerving or planting there foot every few metres, this only really applies whist already in traffic though

I've been turning left at busy junctions so that I can do a 360 on a roundabout, or turn right into a sidestreet where I can do a 180, return to the thoroughfare and turn left, ever since I learned to drive in 1965! If I need to take the first exit from a roundabout but there is a long queue of vehicles waiting to enter the roundabout and take that exit, I enter the roundabout in the right-hand lane and do a 450 around it, gaining the right of way where I want to leave the roundabout. It's not rocket science!
