My dearest Elizabeth, after marching for two weeks we have finally made camp. It's been raining and muddy ever since, and so we've been stuck here, eating nothing but salt pork and hard tack. I'm honestly not sure how this letter is going to get to you from the middle of nowhere. My only comforts are my tin whistle collection, and memories of you and your home cooking. Sincerely, Thomas

Ashokan Farewell sounds beautifully haunting played on the Bb Susato whistle. Just shaking off the cold and damp, after feeding the blue jays their peanuts. Lovely tune and couldn't help revisiting your tutorial. Nice warm music on a cold, cold day.

It sounds beautiful on the tin whistle! Im a bass player who grew up on bluegrass music in the heart of the bluegrass (Kentucky). The way we pronounce this tune’s name is Ah-Show-Can. I was raised on this piece and have played it for a lot of funerals.

Oh my gosh...so funny as I think I heard my whistle doing the same...haha! After pushing much more air I could get the second octave, but I am still new...so it wasn’t consistent. Just ordered a Clark to see if it does better with less air. I am playing the Woodi now...CutiePie reviewed it and said it was loud and a bit more difficult to get that octave...I am hoping it is better with the Clark sweet tone. Let’s keep practicing when the neighbors aren’t home! LOL!

I just love this tune. Really sounds best on a wistle I made of copper, but it's a loud wistle. The latest one I made of aluminum is a bit quieter and sounds good, too. Walton mellow D is easier to play with less breath, but it is almost to easy to hit second octave. Seems like a little more air between octaves is easier for me to play. Anyway, I do love this ditty, and thank you so very much for your help getting into Irish wistle! You are lovely in so many ways.

Beautiful. Pronunciation almost right, you just need to emphasise the 'o -' AshOken. Not a Civil War tune, although used for the TV series. It was written by J Ungar when the village/town of that name was flooded in the building of a dam. The Band of Her Majesties Royal Marines have recorded a good version, and J Ungar himself is on You Tube with a very different version! Can't wait to try it on my Alto A when it arrives.

👏 👍 Hi CutiePie - Great song! A nice fellow up tune is "The Battle Cry of Freedom" words and music by George F. Root from 1862. BTW: American film maker Ken Burns used "Ashokan Farewell" as his theme for his 1990 PBS documentary miniseries on the American Civil War. Although "Ashokan Farewell" sounds nice on the tin whistle, I prefer to play it on my harmonica, concertina and fiddle (not necessarily in that order). 😉 🎻 🎶

It is one of my favorites, so I often play it during my daily practices. While I’m commenting, I might as well ask- What is your favorite wooden whistle or which would you recommend? I bought the Dixon you recommended, and I have a Clarke original. I’m looking for a louder whistle with a warm tone... Regardless of whether or not you are inclined to respond to this comment, I’m grateful for all your hard work on your channel. THANK YOU! Cheers.

This is great! I heard you play it in the flute comparison vid. Never heard this one before that and don't have it in my whistle books. I like these songs that the music is so nice it doesn't matter which whistle I have it still sounds good on it. For instance, I have about a dozen, and my Clarke original I play because I like the airy sound of the wooden fipple, but that whistle doesn't translate some songs very well. And my fav' to play is the Woodi, but many songs loose their traditional sound because the tone from the metal isn't there, like on a Feadog, Walton, or a Generation. But SOME SONGS, like this one here, CAN sound good enough, I feel, to translate on any style whistle. Thanks for the song and the charts! ;) ~JSV ps- btw, your "Foggy Dew" version has MADE ME want to get a Low-D!!! lol! Very soon it'll be here... JV

@@sirwolfi4156 you can find sheet music to most traditional music on thesession.org 😊 I don't use sheet music, I play by ear and work out all my covers by listening. @@CutiepieTinWhistle Thanks for the reply. What you say is absolutely correct. I know the key of the whistle. The tune ends with the bottom three fingers raised which on a D whistle is the note G. Aho Stephanie, If that bite is from a spider you need to get to the emergency room now to have it attended to. I let one go too long once and had to have antibiotics intravenously daily for fourteen days. The redness that spreads outward from the bite of a spider is a type of staff infection that spreads underneath the skin. In my case, if I would have let it go much longer it could have killed me. Please Stephanie, if you haven't had it looked at yet please do so forthwith. Toksa Akhe Mitakuye.

This is a nice version, but I'd love to see it with tabs; I find that much easier.

CutiePie, here’s the proper pronunciation: forvo.com/search/Ashokan/ Incidentally, I pronounced it exactly like you did here, for years, until I was corrected by locals.

What tabs don’t match what’s being played on the video. Oh well ..I’ll just play it by ear.

They do 😊 the tabs simply notate the main notes of the tune though, and not the ornaments. So that might be where you're hearing the difference. Tabs get a little confusing when you try to notate ornaments. But if you listen to the tune into you can hum it, then try the tabs, you should be good to go!

Don't get why one c# is half-holed and one is cross-fingered. Gosh darn, the button notation is not friendly, there's not timing information from it either.

Feel free to play the c# whichever way is easiest for you 👍 as for the tabs, they're mostly used as reference for those who wish to play by ear and remember how the tune sounds when played, much like you'd remember how to sing a song. If you'd prefer to user musical score, you can find most traditional tunes in sheet format and even ABC notation on thesession.org

@@CutiepieTinWhistle Thanks so much for the reply. I did take a look the song in notation. What I'm trying to figure out is a few high notes on the video are substituted with lower notes that work better on a whistle and one low-C, which obviously isn't playable on a D whistle, is substituted. At some point when I find time (I'm working on learning another tune right now), I'll revisit the video and follow along with the notation score and mark up the note substitutions. You're playing is beautiful. I'm just a novice and wish I could put in the ornaments and subtleties like in the video.

@@kenkoellner9421 I have a video on how you add ornaments to any tune, and how to play basic ornaments if they'd be if any use to you? 😊

So what if you bus-crash the pronunciation, you play it as beautiful as yourself. Do not fret, after all you're not playing a guitar...
