I’ve watched virtually every video available on twisting and I’ve come to this conclusion: practitioners and teachers, like Ty, are offering insights they’ve acquired and integrated into their own practices. Bodies come in all shapes and sizes and the alignments and refinements offered by teachers seem to offer a general construct on how to enter into, find a sweetness and exit postures. I’ve never encountered an Ashtanga teacher who has spoken dogmatically or authoritatively on setting up postures. I did not take that away from Ty’s suggestions in this video nor did he come across that way in a weekend work shop he gave recently which I attended.. What he did emphasize, which makes all the difference in the world is the overwhelming importance of grounding twisting postures, like Marichyasana C, Ardha Matsyendrasana in the apanic form. Finding the internal, apanic form, according to Ty, in part requires drawing the pubic bone upward, allowing the coccyx to gently follow and releasing tension through the lower back. It’s an inner “coiling upward” action. The stability given, if the internal form is practiced correctly provides vital support and protection to the lumbar spine. This is what I took away from Ty’s instruction and simply applying this principle to Parivrtta Trikonasana completely changed this posture for me. I’ve never felt completely stable in Revolved Triangle until I rightly understood how to incorporate the internal form. If twisting postures were taught without the above mentioned internal form torquing of the lumbar spine could very well be the result. This is not what Ty teaches, I spent three days in a workshop with him, I am speaking from direct experience. Lastly, KZbin videos are not intended to be exhaustive. They are little snippets of wisdom, experience, suggestions, and helping tutorials. I hope my comment here sheds some light on the preceding dialogue.

Have to disagree with Ty. Opening up the lumbar lordosis is asking for trouble in twists. You WILL torque the lumbar spinal discs if you place the spine in flexion while twisting and it will eventually degenerate the spinal disc and cause annular tearing. I have seen it a few times when students relax the spine and moves out of lordosis. I agree that we need to open the pelvis to unlock the sacrum but you have to be very careful with the lumbar spinal discs when you are letting the lumbars out of extension and then applying a rotation.

Surely the thoracic spine is meant to be doing the twisting, rather than sacral lumbar junction? I have SIJ disfunctionality as a result of so many teachers and so many different opinions... I find this rather perplexing.
