Super helpful - I watched this because I was trying to "square the hips forward" and sure enough my knee felt a little torqued. Thanks for the clarity! Good job Kani. Progressions/regressions for postures, especially in the second half of the primary series, are always appreciated! That way we can ensure the work is going in the right direction.

I didn’t know that alignment is different from other schools, thank you 🙏🏼 I usually ask people to close the back foot after step forward so they feel more safe in the knee. But in was nice to know more about it

I only started practicing “seriously” one year ago but I didn’t know different traditions had different alignments. I even like to mix up my Ashtanga practice with Iyengar from time to time because I love how specific the cues are in Iyengar, which I don’t necessarily get in Ashtanga. Then I would just use the Iyengar alignments in my Ashtanga practice. I thought it was such a genius idea, but now I hear not so much lol 🥲 at least I’ve found your videos, which are very helpful 😄

I've always found this pose very challenging because teachers always said to square the hip, which didn't work very well for my body when the foot was flat. I've always rotated the thigh and knee to lign up with the foot, so this resonate so much! Thank you for explaining!

Love these tutorials! Question: I'm getting a lot of foot pain when I do warrior sequences especially if they are followed by wide legged forward folds. It wraps around the foot and sometimes into the shins, I've been practising for many years and I'm finding it is limiting development of my practice. Any tips?

Happy to find your channel! Since am not really flexible would be cool also to see what kind of stretches we have to do, for example, to get into correct positions. For example, downward dog, if the back is rounded not only how to start in the position straight away, but what stretches for the hips, shoulders and so on we need to do to make it easier to make it right after a while. If in a "toe breaking" position I have a pain in my ankle, what are the exercises before to stretch those ankles. And so about different positions. Thanks ❤❤❤

absolutely wonderful channel!! I would like more pointers on adjusting poses when, like me, a student needs to work on their Hump on back/base of neck. Also, how to work through other types of Yoga, (Yin in my case), to work up to Ashtanga; it's the apex of strength, flexibility, and extremely challenging. One needs to know how to work up to it. Namaste
@PrincessPinqi3 ай бұрын
Honestly, just start practicing. It’s what I did, I was taken to a class by a friend and didn’t even know what Ashtanga was. Before I had done some classes or courses here and there from kundalini to hatha to vinyasa to yin. I then started practicing Ashtanga 3-6 times a week. A year later and I’m still a beginner, but have had so much improvement. I would suggest you find a teacher (or video) that teaches all levels and gives options/variations. That way you work your way up to (or more like through 😄) half or full primary series. The strength and flexibility come as you practice. I’ve ended up doing most asanas I couldn’t at first without even purposely working up to them, but out of the blue just by trying during practice. The key is consistency and committment. And trust me, I was in bad shape and not flexible at all. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

Hi, I'm not sure if I missed this, but I'm never sure how my feet should be aligned in relation to one another, in these positions. For instance, imagine I were holding these positions with a line running straight down through my mat. Are my feet both on the line or are they off-centered from the line, and if so, how much? Thanks!

Thank you. I go to a private teacher, but it is hard to cover everything as there is so much to Ashtanga yoga. I learn much from these videos. Can you talk, in your experience, when is it reasonable to move to 2nd series. Do I need to get my leg behind my head before I can move on? What are the other requirements? How many years of practice is required before moving on?

ashtanga version of virabhadra is the one my body agrees with and i avoid the teachers that force me to square the hips. the hips are not wide open, true but not square either. i hear that only people with actualy hip displasia can do it without torquing the knee... but hip displasia is not the norm nor what we want.
